The Local Density Approximation combined with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (LDA+DMFT method) is applied to the study of the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases of hematite Fe$_2$O$_3$ as a function of volume. As the volume is decreased, a simultaneous 1st order insulator-metal and high-spin to low-spin transition occurs close to the experimental value of the critical volume. The high-spin insulating phase is destroyed by a progressive reduction of the charge gap with increasing pressure, upon closing of which the high spin phase becomes unstable. We conclude that the transition in Fe$_2$O$_3$ at $\approx$50 GPa can be described as an electronically driven volume collapse.
Based on the Phase Hamiltonian, two types of solitons are found to exist in the crossover region between band insulator and Mott insulator in one-dimension. Both of these solitons have fractional charges but with different spins, zero and 1/2, respectively. The results are in accord with the experimental results by Kanoda et al. for TTF-Chloranil under pressure.
The pressure-induced insulator to metal transition (IMT) of layered magnetic nickel phosphorous tri-sulfide NiPS3 was studied in-situ under quasi-uniaxial conditions by means of electrical resistance (R) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. This sluggish transition is shown to occur at 35 GPa. Transport measurements show no evidence of superconductivity to the lowest measured temperature (~ 2 K). The structure results presented here differ from earlier in-situ work that subjected the sample to a different pressure state, suggesting that in NiPS3 the phase stability fields are highly depen…
Using Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics calculations we investigate the behavior of the low-dimensional multiorbital Mott insulator TiOCl under pressure. We show that the system undergoes {\it two} consecutive phase transitions, first at $P_\text{c}$ from a Mott-insulator to a metallic phase in the $ab$ plane with a strong Ti-Ti dimerization along $b$. At a pressure $P'_\text{c} > P_\text{c}$ the dimerization disappears and the system behaves as a uniform metal. This second transition has not yet been reported experimentally. We show that the insulator-to-metal transition at $P_\text{c}$ is dr…
We report the electronic properties of the NdNiO3, prepared at the ambient oxygen pressure condition. The metal-insulator transition temperature is observed at 192 K, but the low temperature state is found to be less insulating compared to the NdNiO3 prepared at high oxygen pressure. The electric resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity of the compound show large hysteresis below the metal-insulator transition. The large value of the effective mass (m* ~ 8me) in the metallic state indicate the narrow character of the 3d band. The electric conduction at low temperatures (T = 2 …
Calculations employing the local density approximation combined with static and dynamical mean-field theories (LDA+U and LDA+DMFT) indicate that the metal-insulator transition observed at 32 GPa in paramagnetic LaMnO3 at room temperature is not a Mott-Hubbard transition, but is caused by orbital splitting of the majority-spin eg bands. For LaMnO3 to be insulating at pressures below 32 GPa, both on-site Coulomb repulsion and Jahn-Teller distortion are needed.
Ab initio calculations predict a metal-insulator transition at zero temperature to occur in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ at moderate pressures as a result of a pressure-induced spin-state transition. The spin-state transition that is seen at 105 K at ambient pressure from a low-temperature high-spin state to a high-temperature low-spin state has been observed to be shifted to lower temperatures as pressure is applied. From our calculations we find that a smaller unit cell volume favors the metallic low-spin state, which becomes more stable at 5 GPa. Similar physics should take place in the related compou…
A complex interplay of different energy scales involving Coulomb repulsion, spin-orbit coupling and Hund's coupling energy in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) material produces novel emerging physical state. For instance, ferromagnetism in vdW charge transfer insulator CrGeTe$_3$, that provides a promising platform to simultaneously manipulate the magnetic and electrical properties for potential device implementation using few layers thick materials. Here, we show a continuous tuning of magnetic and electrical properties of CrGeTe$_3$ single crystal using pressure. With application of …
The metal-insulator and spin state transitions of CoO under high pressure are studied by using density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory. Our calculations predict that the metal-insulator transition in CoO is a typical orbital selective Mott transition, where the $t_{2g}$ orbitals of Co 3d shell become metallic firstly around 60 GPa while the $e_g$ orbitals still remain insulating until 170 GPa. Further studies of the spin states of Co 3d shell reveal that the orbital selective Mott phase in the intermediate pressure regime is mainly stabilized by the high-spin state …
A pressure-induced simultaneous metal-insulator transition (MIT) and structural-phase transformation in lithium hydride with about 1% volume collapse has been predicted by means of the local density approximation (LDA) in conjunction with an all-electron GW approximation method. The LDA wrongly predicts that the MIT occurs before the structural phase transition. As a byproduct, it is shown that only the use of the generalized-gradient approximation together with the zero-point vibration produces an equilibrium lattice parameter, bulk modulus, and an equation of state that are in excellent agre…
We use synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport under pressure to probe both the magnetism and the structure of single crystal NiS2 across its Mott-Hubbard transition. In the insulator, the low-temperature antiferromagnetic order results from superexchange among correlated electrons and couples to a (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) superlattice distortion. Applying pressure suppresses the insulating state, but enhances the magnetism as the superexchange increases with decreasing lattice constant. By comparing our results under pressure to previous studies of doped crystals we show that this depen…
We report the first high pressure measurement of the Fe K-edge in hematite (Fe$_2$O$_3$) by X-ray absorption spectroscopy in partial fluorescence yield geometry. The pressure-induced evolution of the electronic structure as Fe$_2$O$_3$ transforms from a high-spin insulator to a low-spin metal is reflected in the x-ray absorption pre-edge. The crystal field splitting energy was found to increase monotonically with pressure up to 48 GPa, above which a series of phase transitions occur. Atomic multiplet, cluster diagonalization, and density-functional calculations were performed to simulate the p…
The intertwined charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom could endow 5d compounds with exotic properties. Current interest is focused on electromagnetic interactions in these materials, whereas the important role of lattice geometry remains to be fully recognized. For this sake, we investigate pressure-induced phase transitions in the spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr3Ir2O7 with Raman, electrical resistance, and x-ray diffraction measurements. We reveal an interesting magnetic transition coinciding with a structural transition at 14.4 GPa, but without a concurrent insulator-metal trans…
Unusual metallic states involving breakdown of the standard Fermi-liquid picture of long-lived quasiparticles in well-defined band states emerge at low temperatures near correlation-driven Mott transitions. Prominent examples are ill-understood metallic states in $d$- and $f$-band compounds near Mott-like transitions. Finding of superconductivity in solid O$_{2}$ on the border of an insulator-metal transition at high pressures close to 96~GPa is thus truly remarkable. Neither the insulator-metal transition nor superconductivity are understood satisfactorily. Here, we undertake a first step in …
Recently discovered class of 2D materials based on transition metal phosphorous trichalcogenides exhibit antiferromagnetic ground state, with potential applications in spintronics. Amongst them, FePS$ _{3} $ is a Mott insulator with a band gap of $\sim$ 1.5 eV. This study using Raman spectroscopy along with first-principles density functional theoretical analysis examines the stability of its structure and electronic properties under pressure. Raman spectroscopy reveals two phase transitions at 4.6 GPa and 12 GPa marked by the changes in pressure coefficients of the mode frequencies and the nu…
We studied the transmittance and reflectance of the low-dimensional Mott-Hubbard insulator TiOCl in the infrared and visible frequency range as a function of pressure. The strong suppression of the transmittance and the abrupt increase of the near-infrared reflectance above 12 GPa suggest a pressure-induced insulator-to-metal transition. The pressure-dependent frequency shifts of the orbital excitations, as well as the pressure dependences of the charge gap and the spectral weight of the optical conductivity above the phase transition are presented.
On the basis of experimental thermoelectric power results and ab initio calculations, we propose that a metal-insulator transition takes place at high pressure (approximately 6 GPa) in MgV_2O_4.
Protected by the interplay of on-site Coulomb interactions and spin-orbit coupling, Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ at high pressure is a rare example of a Mott insulator with a paramagnetic ground state. Here, using optical Raman scattering, we measure both the phonon and magnon evolution in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ under pressure, and identify three different magnetically-ordered phases, culminating in a spin-disordered state beyond 18 GPa. A strong first-order structural phase transition drives the magnetic evolution at $\sim$10 GPa with reduced structural anisotropy in the IrO$_6$ cages, leading to increasingly isotro…
In addition to its promising potential for applications, GaV4S8 shows very interesting physical properties with temperature and magnetic field. These properties can be tuned by applying hydrostatic pressure in order to reveal and understand the physics of these materials. Not only pressure induces an insulator-to-metal transition in GaV4S8 but it also has an interesting effect on the structural and magnetic transitions. Using a combination of AC calorimetry, capacitance, and resistivity measurements under pressure, we determine the evolution of the structural and magnetic transitions with pres…
We present a simple, but very realistic, model for a description of pressure induced valence and metal-insulator transitions in mixed valence systems. It is based on the extended Falicov-Kimball model and the supposition that the key interaction governing these transitions is the nonlocal hybridization between the localized $f$ and itinerant $d$ electrons. Taking into account, in addition, the~parametrization between the external pressure and the $d$-$f$ hybridization (the experimental fact), the model is able to describe, at least qualitatively, valence as well as metal-insulator transitions …
We present a method for calculating the spectrum of periodic solids within reduced density matrix functional theory. This method is validated by a detailed comparison of the angular momentum projected spectral density with that of well established many-body techniques, in all cases finding an excellent agreement. The physics behind the pressure induced insulator-metal phase transition in MnO is investigated. The driving mechanism of this transition is identified as increased crystal field splitting with pressure, resulting in a charge redistribution between the Mn $e_g$ and $t_2g$ symmetry pro…
The archetypal $3d$ Mott insulator hematite, Fe$_2$O$_3$, is one of the basic oxide components playing an important role in mineralogy of Earth's lower mantle. Its high pressure-temperature behavior, such as the electronic properties, equation of state, and phase stability is of fundamental importance for understanding the properties and evolution of the Earth's interior. Here, we study the electronic structure, magnetic state, and lattice stability of Fe$_2$O$_3$ at ultra-high pressures using the density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) approach. In the vicinity of a Mot…
Insulator to Metal Transition, Spin-Phonon Coupling, and Potential Magnetic Transition Observed in Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate LiYbSe$_2$ under High Pressure
Resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) was used to determine the pressure dependence of the f-electron occupancy in the Kondo insulator SmB6. Applied pressure reduces the f-occupancy, but surprisingly, the material maintains a significant divalent character up to a pressure of at least 35 GPa. Thus, the closure of the resistive activation energy gap and onset of magnetic order are not driven by stabilization of an integer valent state. Over the entire pressure range, the material maintains a remarkably stable intermediate valence that can in principle support a nontrivial band structure.
We investigated the pressure-dependent optical response of the low-dimensional Mott-Hubbard insulator TiOBr by transmittance and reflectance measurements in the infrared and visible frequency range. A suppression of the transmittance above a critical pressure and a concomitant increase of the reflectance are observed, suggesting a pressure-induced metallization of TiOBr. The metallic phase of TiOBr at high pressure is confirmed by the presence of additional excitations extending down to the far-infrared range. The pressure-induced metallization coincides with a structural phase transition, acc…
We have investigated the in-plane uniaxial pressure effect on the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator Ca2RuO4 from resistivity and magnetization measurements. We succeeded in inducing the ferromagnetic metallic phase at lower critical pressure than by hydrostatic pressure, indicating that the flattening distortion of the RuO6 octahedra is more easily released under in-plane uniaxial pressure. We also found a striking in-plane anisotropy in the pressure responses of various magnetic phases: Although the magnetization increases monotonically with pressure diagonal to the orthorhombic principal axes…
We performed resistivity measurements in CuRh$_{2}$S$_{4}$ under quasi-hydrostatic pressure of up to 8.0 GPa, and found a pressure induced superconductor-insulator (SI) transition. Initially, with increasing pressure, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ increases from 4.7 K at ambient pressure to 6.4 K at 4.0 GPa, but decreases at higher pressures. With further compression, superconductivity in CuRh$_{2}$S$_{4}$ disappears abruptly at a critical pressure $P_{\rm SI}$ between 5.0 and 5.6 GPa, when it becomes an insulator.
We show that the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the Mott insulator Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ features a metal-insulator transition at 0.5GPa: at 300K from paramagnetic insulator to paramagnetic quasi-two-dimensional metal; at $T \leq$ 12K from antiferromagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic, highly anisotropic, three-dimensional metal. % We compare the metallic state to that of the structurally related p-wave superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, and discuss the importance of structural distortions, which are expected to couple strongly to pressure.
We studied the pressure dependence of the room-temperature infrared reflectivity of (TMTTF)_2AsF_6 along all three optical axes. This anisotropic organic compound consists of molecular stacks with orbital overlap along the a direction; due to electronic correlations the system is a quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator with a charge gap Δ_ρ= 70 meV. The gap is gradually reduced with increasing external pressure, accompanied by the onset of a Drude contribution along the stacking direction. In the perpendicular b' direction a Drude-like optical response is observed for pressures above 2 GPa. Thi…
Mott insulator superconductor transition, via pressure and no external doping, is studied in orbitally non degenerate spin-\half systems. It is presented as another RVB route to high \tc superconductivity. We propose a `strong coupling' hypothesis which helps to view first order Mott transition as a self doping process that also preserves superexchange on metal side . We present a generalized t-J model where a conserved $N_0$ doubly occupied ($e^-$) sites and $N_0$ empty sites ($e^+$) hop in the background of $N - 2 N_0$ singly singly occupied (neutral) sites in a lattice of N sites. An equiva…
We have explored the critical metal-insulator phenomena for pyrochlore-type $R_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, in which electron correlation strength and magnetic configuration are systematically controlled by varying the average rare-earth ionic radius ($R$=Nd$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$ and Sm$_{y}$Nd$_{1-y}$), external pressure, and magnetic field. Metal-insulator transitions in bulk are caused by increasing $x$ or tuning external pressure, indicating that the effective electron correlation is responsible for the transition. The metallic state intervenes between the paramagnetic insulating and antiferromagnetically ord…
We report the results of high pressure x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, and electrical transport measurements of Kondo insulator Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pt$_3$ up to 42 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the study of any Ce-based KI. We observe a smooth decrease in volume and movement toward intermediate Ce valence with pressure, both of which point to increased electron correlations. Despite this, temperature-dependent resistance data show the suppression of the interaction-driven ambient pressure insulating ground state. We also discuss potential ramifications of these results for the predicted to…
The chemical pressure effect on the structural, transport, magnetic and electronic properties (by measuring X-ray photoemission spectroscopy) of ZnV2O4 has been investigated by doping Mn and Co on the Zinc site of ZnV2O4. With Mn doping the V-V distance increases and with Co doping it decreases. The resistivity and thermoelectric power data indicate that as the V-V distance decreases the system moves towards Quantum Phase Transition. The transport data also indicate that the conduction is due to the small polaron hopping. The chemical pressure shows the non-monotonous behaviour of charge gap a…
Optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] of YbS has been measured under pressure up to 20 GPa. Below 8 GPa, $σ(ω)$ is low since YbS is an insulator with an energy gap between fully occupied 4$f$ state and unoccupied conduction ($c$) band. Above 8 GPa, however, $σ(ω)$ increases dramatically, developing a Drude component due to heavy carriers and characteristic infrared peaks. It is shown that increasing pressure has caused an energy overlap and hybridization between the $c$ band and 4$f$ state, thus driving the initially ionic and insulating YbS into a correlated metal with heavy carriers.
The thermal expansion and heat capacity of FeSb2 at ambient pressure agrees with a picture of a temperature induced spin state transition within the Fe t_{2g} multiplet. However, high pressure powder diffraction data show no sign of a structural phase transition up to 7GPa. A bulk modulus B=84(3)GPa has been extracted and the temperature dependence of the Gruneisen parameter has been determined. We discuss here the relevance of a Kondo insulator description for this material.
The accuracy of LDA + U total energies is tested by predicting the high pressure behavior of rocksalt-structured FeO, including metal-insulator and magnetic transitions, equation of state, and lattice strain, as functions of the Coulomb repulsion U. For U = 4.6 eV, 6.0 eV and 8.0 eV, two self-consistent solutions, one with rhombohedral and one with monoclinic electronic symmetry, are found, and for U = 4.6 eV the monoclinic solution becomes more stable than the rhombohedral solution at 100 GPa, leading to an insulator-metal transition. With increasing U, metallization occurs at higher pressure…
We report a comprehensive high-pressure study on the antiferromagnetic topological insulator EuSn2As2 up to 21.1 GPa through measurements of synchrotron x-ray diffraction, electrical resistance, magnetic resistance, and Hall transports combined with first-principles calculations. No evident trace of a structural phase transition is detected. The Neel temperatures determined from resistance are increased from 24 to 77 K under pressure, which is resulted from the enhanced magnetic exchange couplings between Eu2+ ions yielded by our first-principles calculations. The negative magnetoresistance of…
We have investigated the magnetic field-induced metal-insulator transition in the tau-phase organic conductors, which occurs in fields above 35 T, and below 14 K, by magnetization, thermoelectric, and pressure dependent transport methods. Our results show that the transition is a bulk thermodynamic process where a magnetic field-dependent gap opens upon entry into the insulating state. We argue that the transition involves a magnetic field-induced change in the electronic structure.
The charge transfer antiferromagnetic (T$_{N}$ =220 K) insulator EuNiO$_{3}$ undergoes, at ambient pressure, a temperature-induced metal insulator MI transition at T$_{MI}$=463 K. We have investigated the effect of pressure (up to p~20 GPa) on the electronic, magnetic and structural properties of EuNiO$_{3}$ using electrical resistance measurements, ${151}^$Eu nuclear resonance scattering of synchrotron radiation and x-ray diffraction, respectively. With increasing pressure we find at p$_{c}$ =5.8 GPa a transition from the insulating state to a metallic state, while the orthorhombic structure …
We utilize near-infrared pump and mid-infrared probe spectroscopy to investigate the ultrafast electronic response of pressurized VO$_2$. Distinct pump-probe signals and a pumping threshold behavior are observed even in the pressure-induced metallic state showing a noticeable amount of localized electronic states. Our results are consistent with a scenario of a bandwidth-controlled Mott-Hubbard transition.
The metal to insulator transition in the charge transfer NiS{2-x}Se{x} compound has been investigated through infrared reflectivity. Measurements performed by applying pressure to pure NiS2 (lattice contraction) and by Se-alloying (lattice expansion) reveal that in both cases an anomalous metallic state is obtained. We find that optical results are not compatible with the linear Se-alloying vs Pressure scaling relation previously established through transport, thus pointing out the substantially different microscopic origin of the two transitions.
The pressure induced superconducting phase diagram is calculated for an extension of the periodic Anderson model (PAM) in the $ U = \infty $ limit taking into account the effect of a nearest neighbor attractive interaction between f-electrons. We analyze the role of the chemical potential compared to several plots of the f-band density of states and we also found a superconductor-insulator transition induced by pressure when the chemical potential crosses the hybridization gap.
In this Letter we report the first LDA+DMFT (method combining Local Density Approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) results of magnetic and spectral properties calculation for paramagnetic phases of FeO at ambient and high pressures (HP). At ambient pressure (AP) calculation gave FeO as a Mott insulator with Fe 3$d$-shell in high-spin state. Calculated spectral functions are in a good agreement with experimental PES and IPES data. Experimentally observed metal-insulator transition at high pressure is successfully reproduced in calculations. In contrast to MnO and Fe$_2$O$_3$ ($d^5$ con…
The spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr3Ir2O7 provides a fascinating playground to explore insulator-metal transition driven by intertwined charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. Here, we report high pressure electric resistance and resonant inelastic x ray scattering measurements on single crystal Sr3Ir2O7 up to 63 65 GPa at 300 K. The material becomes a confined metal at 59.5 GPa, showing metallicity in the ab plane but an insulating behavior along the c axis. Such an unusual phenomenon resembles the strange metal phase in cuprate superconductors. Since there is no sign of the collapse of sp…
The pressure dependence of phase transitions in the quasi one-dimensional vanadium oxide $β$-Na$_{1/3}$V$_2$O$_5$ has been studied by magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements. The pressure dependence of the various transition temperatures is quite differently. The transition at T=240 K, previously reported and attributed to ordering on Na sites, and a second transition at $T \approx 222$ K, reported here for the first time and attributed to a further increase of order on Na sites, are almost independent of pressure. On the other hand, the metal-insulator (MI) transition …
A metal-insulator transition (MIT) in BiFeO$_3$ under pressure was investigated by a method combining Generalized Gradient Corrected Local Density Approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (GGA+DMFT). Our paramagnetic calculations are found to be in agreement with experimental phase diagram: Magnetic and spectral properties of BiFeO3 at ambient and high pressures were calculated for three experimental crystal structures $R3c$, $Pbnm$ and $Pm\bar{3}m$. At ambient pressure in the $R3c$ phase, an insulating gap of 1.2 eV was obtained in good agreement with its experimental value. Both $R3c$ …
Electrical resistivity as a function of temperature, pressure, and magnetic field was measured in high and low purity single crystals of BaVS$_3$ close to the critical pressure value $p_{cr}$$\approx$2 GPa, associated with the zero temperature insulator-to-metal (MI) transition. In the 1.8-2.0 GPa range, where the MI transition is below $\approx$20 K, one can observe a sudden collapse of the MI phase boundary upon increasing pressure and at fixed pressure a magnetic field induced insulator to metal transition. In high quality samples these features are accompanied by hysteresis in all measured…
We reinvestigate the pressure dependence of the crystal structure and antiferromagnetic phase transition in MnTe$_2$ by the rigorous and reliable tool of high pressure neutron powder diffraction. First-principles density functional theory calculations are carried out in order to gain microscopic insight. The measured Néel temperature of MnTe$_2$ is found to show unusually large pressure dependence of $12$ K GPa$^{-1}$. This gives rise to large violation of Bloch's rule given by $α=\frac{d\log T_N}{d\log V}=-\frac{10}{3} \approx -3.3$, to a $α$ value of -6.0 $\pm$ 0.1 for MnTe$_2$. The ab-initi…
The metal-insulator (MI) transition in BaVS$_3$ has been studied at ambient pressure and under hydrostatic pressure up to $p=26 $kbar in the frequency range of $20-3000 $cm$^{-1}$. The charge gap determined from the optical reflectivity is enhanced, $Δ_{ch}(p)/k_BT_{MI}(p)\sim 12$. This ratio is independent of pressure indicating that the character of the transition does not vary along the $p-T$ phase boundary. Above the critical pressure, $p_{cr}\sim20$ kbar, metallic spectra were recorded in the whole temperature range, as expected from the shape of the phase diagram. Our results exclude the…
We employ a combination of the \emph{ab initio} band structure methods and dynamical mean-field theory to determine the electronic structure and phase stability of paramagnetic FeO at high pressure and temperature. Our results reveal a high-spin to low-spin transition within the B1 crystal structure of FeO upon compression of the lattice volume above 73~GPa. The spin-state transition is accompanied by an orbital-selective Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT). The lattice volume is found to collapse by about 8.5~\% at the MIT, implying a complex interplay between electronic and lattice degrees…
The layered chalcogenide Ta2NiSe5 has recently attracted much interest as a strong candidate for the long sought excitonic insulator (EI). Since the physical properties of an EI are expected to depend sensitively on the external pressure, it is important to clarify the pressure evolution of microscopic electronic state in Ta2NiSe5. Here we report the optical conductivity [s(w)] of Ta2NiSe5 measured at high pressures to 10 GPa and at low temperatures to 8 K. With cooling at ambient pressure, s(w) develops an energy gap of about 0.17 eV and a pronounced excitonic peak at 0.38 eV, as already repo…
The electronic property and magnetic susceptibility of Ce$_3$Pd$_3$Bi$_4$ were systemically investigated from 18 K to 290 K for varying values of cell-volume using dynamic mean-field theory coupled with density functional theory. By extrapolating to zero temperature, the ground state of Ce$_3$Pd$_3$Bi$_4$ at ambient pressure is found to be a correlated semimetal due to insufficient hybridization. Upon applying pressure, the hybridization strength increases and a crossover to Kondo insulator is observed at finite temperatures. The characteristic temperature signaling the formation of Kondo sing…
Systematic pressure- and temperature-dependent infrared studies on the two-dimensional organic quantum spin-liquid $β^{\prime}$-EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ disclose the electronic and lattice evolution across the Mott insulator-metal transition. Increasing hydrostatic pressure continuously suppresses the insulating ground state; for $p>0.6$~GPa, a Drude-like component develops indicating the appearance of coherent quasiparticles at the Fermi level. In the vicinity of the Mott transition, not only the electronic state changes rapidly, but also the vibration modes exhibit a jump both in frequen…
We compute the electronic structure, spin and charge state of Fe ions, and structural phase stability of paramagnetic CaFeO$_3$ under pressure using a fully self-consistent in charge density DFT+dynamical mean-field theory method. We show that at ambient pressure CaFeO$_3$ is a negative charge-transfer insulator characterized by strong localization of the Fe $3d$ electrons. It crystallizes in the monoclinic $P2_1/n$ crystal structure with a cooperative breathing mode distortion of the lattice. While the Fe $3d$ Wannier occupations and local moments are consistent with robust charge disproporti…
Topological superconductivity is one of most fascinating properties of topological quantum matters that was theoretically proposed and can support Majorana Fermions at the edge state. Superconductivity was previously realized in a Cu-intercalated Bi2Se3 topological compound or a Bi2Te3 topological compound at high pressure. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity in the topological compound Sb2Te3 when pressure was applied. The crystal structure analysis results reveal that superconductivity at a low-pressure range occurs at the ambient phase. The Hall coefficient measurements indica…
