In this Letter we report the first LDA+DMFT (method combining Local Density Approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) results of magnetic and spectral properties calculation for paramagnetic phases of FeO at ambient and high pressures (HP). At ambient pressure (AP) calculation gave FeO as a Mott insulator with Fe 3$d$-shell in high-spin state. Calculated spectral functions are in a good agreement with experimental PES and IPES data. Experimentally observed metal-insulator transition at high pressure is successfully reproduced in calculations. In contrast to MnO and Fe$_2$O$_3$ ($d^5$ configuration) where metal-insulator transition is accompanied by high-spin to low-spin transition, in FeO ($d^6$ configuration) average value of magnetic moment $\sqrt{<μ_z^2>}$ is nearly the same in the insulating phase at AP and metallic phase at HP in agreement with X-Ray spectroscopy data (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf83}, 4101 (1999)). The metal-insulator transition is orbital selective with only $t_{2g}$ orbitals demonstrating spectral function typical for strongly correlated metal (well pronounced Hubbard bands and narrow quasiparticle peak) while $e_g$ states remain insulating.
We employ a combination of the \emph{ab initio} band structure methods and dynamical mean-field theory to determine the electronic structure and phase stability of paramagnetic FeO at high pressure and temperature. Our results reveal a high-spin to low-spin transition within the B1 crystal structure of FeO upon compression of the lattice volume above 73~GPa. The spin-state transition is accompanied by an orbital-selective Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT). The lattice volume is found to collapse by about 8.5~\% at the MIT, implying a complex interplay between electronic and lattice degrees…
Iron oxide is a key compound to understand the state of the deep Earth. It has been believed that previously known oxides such as FeO and Fe2O3 will be dominant at the mantle conditions. However, recent observation of FeO2 shed another light to the composition of the deep lower mantle (DLM) and thus understanding of the physical properties of FeO2 will be critical to model DLM. Here, we report the electronic structure and structural properties of FeO2 by using density functional theory (DFT) and dynamic mean field theory (DMFT). The crystal structure of FeO2 is composed of Fe2+ and O2 2- dimer…
The accuracy of LDA + U total energies is tested by predicting the high pressure behavior of rocksalt-structured FeO, including metal-insulator and magnetic transitions, equation of state, and lattice strain, as functions of the Coulomb repulsion U. For U = 4.6 eV, 6.0 eV and 8.0 eV, two self-consistent solutions, one with rhombohedral and one with monoclinic electronic symmetry, are found, and for U = 4.6 eV the monoclinic solution becomes more stable than the rhombohedral solution at 100 GPa, leading to an insulator-metal transition. With increasing U, metallization occurs at higher pressure…
We perform a combined experimental-theoretical study of the Fe-oxychalcogenides (FeO$\emph{Ch}$) series La$_{2}$O$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O\emph{M}$_{2}$ (\emph{M}=S, Se), which is the latest among the Fe-based materials with the potential \ to show unconventional high-T$_{c}$ superconductivity (HTSC). A combination of incoherent Hubbard features in X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra, as well as resitivity data, reveal that the parent FeO$\emph{Ch}$ are correlation-driven insulators. To uncover microscopics underlying these findings, we perform local density app…
We perform a comprehensive theoretical study of the pressure-induced evolution of the electronic structure, magnetic state, and phase stability of the late transition metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO using a fully charge self-consistent DFT+dynamical mean-field theory method. Our results reveal that the pressure-induced Mott insulator-to-metal phase transition in MnO-NiO is accompanied by a simultaneous collapse of local magnetic moments and lattice volume, implying a complex interplay between chemical bonding and electronic correlations. We compute the pressure-induced evolution of rela…
The high-pressure phases of FeO and MnO were studied by the first principles calculations. The present theoretical study predicts that the high-pressure phase of MnO is a metallic normal B8 structure (nB8), while that of FeO should take the inverse B8 structure (iB8). The novel feature of the unique high-pressure phase of stoichiometric FeO is that the system should be a band insulator in the ordered antiferromagnetic (AF) state and that the existence of a band gap leads to special stability of the phase. The observed metallicity of the high-pressure and high-temperature phase of FeO may be ca…
We study FeO, a Mott insulator in GGA and GGA+U approximations. In the GGA we find a multi-band metallic state with remarkable inter-band nesting between two $t_{2g}$ bands of Fermi surface, which signals possible instability towards an orbital ordered insulating phase. Such broken symmetry state, although has lower energy than the underlying homogeneous metallic state, but the gap magnitude is less than the experimentally observed optical gap. Therefore we incorporate the calculated value of on-site Coulomb repulsion U on orbital ordered state. We find that symmetry breaking and Coulomb corre…
We investigate the metal insulator transitions at finite temperature for the Hubbard model with diagonal alloy disorder. We solve the dynamical mean field theory equations with the non crossing approximation and we use the coherent potential approximation to handle disorder. The excitation spectrum is given for various correlation strength $U$ and disorder. Two successive metal insulator transitions are observed at integer filling values as $U$ is increased. An important selective transfer of spectral weight arises upon doping. The strong influence of the temperature on the low energy dynamics…
We propose the notion of spin-selective Kondo insulator, which provides a fundamental mechanism to describe the ferromagnetic phase of the Kondo lattice model with antiferromagnetic coupling. This unveils a remarkable feature of the ferromagnetic metallic phase: the majority-spin conduction electrons show metallic- while the minority-spin electrons show insulating-behavior. The resulting Kondo gap in the minority spin sector, which is due to the cooperation of ferromagnetism and partial Kondo screening, evidences a dynamically-induced commensurability for a combination of minority-spin electro…
The phenomenon of Anderson localization wherein non-interacting electrons are localized by quenched impurities is a subject matter that has been extremely well studied. However, localization transition under the combined influence of interaction and quenched disorder is less well understood. In this context we study the localization transition in a two-dimensional Hubbard model under the influence of a spin-selective disorder i.e, disorder which is operational on just one of the spin-species. The model is analyzed by laying recourse to a Quantum Monte Carlo based scheme. Using this approach we…
We use the slave-spin mean-field approach to study particle-hole symmetric one- and two-band Hubbard models in presence of Hund's coupling interaction. By analytical analysis of Hamiltonian, we show that the locking of the two orbitals vs.\,orbital-selective Mott transition can be formulated within a Landau-Ginzburg framework. By applying the slave-spin mean-field to impurity problem, we are able to make a correspondence between impurity and lattice. We also consider the stability of the orbital selective Mott phase to the hybridization between the orbitals and study the limitations of the sla…
We explore the momentum-sector-selective metal insulator transitions recently found in the eight - site dynamical cluster approximation to the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The phase diagram in the space of interaction and second-neighbor hopping is established. The initial transitions from Fermi-liquid like to sector-selective phases are found to be of second order, caused by the continuous opening of an energy gap whereas the other transitions are found to be of first order. In the sector-selective phase the Fermi surface regions which are not gapped are found to have a non-Fermi-liquid sel…
An approach to compute exchange parameters of the Heisenberg model in plane-wave-based methods is presented. This calculation scheme is based on the Green's function method and Wannier function projection technique. It was implemented in the framework of the pseudopotential method and tested on such materials as NiO, FeO, Li2MnO3, and KCuF3. The obtained exchange constants are in a good agreement with both the total energy calculations and experimental estimations for NiO and KCuF3. In the case of FeO our calculations explain the pressure dependence of the Néel temperature. Li2MnO3 turns out t…
We present the influence of spin correlation on the metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in two-orbital Hubbard models by the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson approach. In the asymmetric half-filling situation, the two orbits simultaneously transit from conducting to insulating states with the increase of Coulomb correlation, accompanied by a paramagnetic (PM)-antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition. The orbital selective Mott transition found in the PM condition is completely suppressed over a wide correlation range, though it may exist in the systems away from half-filling. In the insulating state, t…
We present the results of zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements made on the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$). Spontaneous muon-spin precession indicative of quasistatic long range magnetic ordering is observed in Sr$_{2}$FeOsO$_6$ within the AF1 antiferromagnetic phase for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=135 \pm 2~{\rm K}$. Upon cooling below $T_2 \approx 67~{\rm K}$ the oscillations cease to be resolvable owing to the coexistence of the AF1 and AF2 phases, which leads to a broader range of internal magnetic fields. Using density functional calculations …
We present a detailed account of the physics of Vanadium sesquioxide (${\rm V_2O_3}$), a benchmark system for studying correlation induced metal-insulator transition(s). Based on a detailed perusal of a wide range of experimental data, we stress the importance of multi-orbital Coulomb interactions in concert with first-principles LDA bandstructure for a consistent understanding of the PI-PM MIT under pressure. Using LDA+DMFT, we show how the MIT is of the orbital selective type, driven by large changes in dynamical spectral weight in response to small changes in trigonal field splitting under …
Spin-selective insulators emerge in systems composed of fermions with two internal degrees of freedom and another carrier, which could be fermionic or bosonic. These insulators are characterized by a gapless state for one kind of fermion and an insulator state for the other, with the latter satisfying a commensurability relation that involves the other carrier. We review the different scenarios where these unique insulators arise, focusing on Bose-Fermi mixtures, the most recent and promising scenario for observing these insulators in cold atom setups.
Topological phases of matter are among the most intriguing research directions in Condensed Matter Physics. It is known that superconductivity induced on a topological insulator's surface can lead to exotic Majorana modes, the main ingredient of many proposed quantum computation schemes. In this context, the iron-based high critical temperature superconductors are a promising platform to host such an exotic phenomenon in real condensed-matter compounds. The Coulomb interaction is commonly believed to be vital for the magnetic and superconducting properties of these systems. This work bridges t…
Inspired by the physics of rare earth nickelates, we study the photoemission (PES) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of a correlated electron system with two types of insulating sublattices. Sublattice A is characterized by a hybridization gap and a low-spin state, while sublattice B features a Mott gap and a local magnetic moment. We show how the coupling of these two qualitatively different insulating states affects the dynamics of photo-induced charge carriers and how the nonequilibrium states manifest themselves in the PES and RIXS signals. In particular, we find that …
We present a comprehensive study of the spin excitations - as measured by the dynamical spin structure factor $S(q,ω)$ - of the so-called block-magnetic state of low-dimensional orbital-selective Mott insulators. We realize this state via both a multi-orbital Hubbard model and a generalized Kondo-Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Due to various competing energy scales present in the models, the system develops periodic ferromagnetic islands of various shapes and sizes, which are antiferromagnetically coupled. The 2$\times$2 particular case was already found experimentally in the ladder material BaFe$_2$…
Interaction-driven metal-insulator transitions or Mott transitions are widely observed in condensed-matter systems. In multi-orbital systems, many-body physics is richer in which an orbital-selective metal-insulator transition is an intriguing and unique phenomenon. Here we use first-principles calculations to show that a magnetic transition (from paramagnetic to long-range magnetically ordered) can simultaneously induce an orbital-selective insulator-metal transition in rock-salt ordered double perovskite oxides $A_2BB'$O$_6$ where $B$ is a non-magnetic ion (Y$^{3+}$ and Sc$^{3+}$) and $B'$ a…
In complex materials observed electronic phases and transitions between them often involves coupling between many degrees of freedom whose entanglement convolutes understanding of the instigating mechanism. Metal-insulator transitions are one such problem where coupling to the structural, orbital, charge, and magnetic order parameters frequently obscures the underlying physics. Here, we demonstrate a way to unravel this conundrum by heterostructuring a prototypical multi-ordered complex oxide NdNiO3 in ultra thin geometry, which preserves the metal-to-insulator transition and bulk-like magneti…
The metal-insulator and spin state transitions of CoO under high pressure are studied by using density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory. Our calculations predict that the metal-insulator transition in CoO is a typical orbital selective Mott transition, where the $t_{2g}$ orbitals of Co 3d shell become metallic firstly around 60 GPa while the $e_g$ orbitals still remain insulating until 170 GPa. Further studies of the spin states of Co 3d shell reveal that the orbital selective Mott phase in the intermediate pressure regime is mainly stabilized by the high-spin state …
We present a detailed theoretical study of the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of magnesiowüstite Fe$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O with $x$ in the range between 0$-$0.875 using a fully charge self-consistent implementation of the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) method. In particular, we compute the electronic structure and phase stability of the rock-salt B1-structured (Fe,Mg)O at high pressures relevant for the Earth's lower mantle. We obtain that upon compression paramagnetic (Fe,Mg)O exhibits a spin-state transition of Fe$^{2+}$ ions from a high-spin t…
We report on a hierarchy of temperatures Tc < Tgap < Tmet in superconducting Rb1-xFe2-ySe2 observed by THz spectroscopy. Above Tmet = 90 K the material reveals semiconducting characteristics. Below Tmet a coherent metallic THz response emerges. This metal-to-insulator type, orbital selective transition is clearly indicated by an isosbestic point in the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity and dielectric constant at THz-frequencies. At Tgap = 61 K a gap opens in the THz regime and then the superconducting transition occurs at Tc = 32 K. This sequence of temperatures seems to refle…
We study the effects of electron-electron interactions and hole doping on the electronic structure of Cu-doped NaFeAs using the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) method. In particular, we employ an effective multi-orbital Hubbard model with a realistic bandstructure of NaFeAs in which Cu-doping was modeled within a rigid band approximation and compute the evolution of the spectral properties, orbital-dependent electronic mass renormalizations, and magnetic properties of NaFeAs upon doping with Cu. In addition, we perform fully charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT…
Ultra-high resolution synchrotron diffraction data for $\rm GdBaCo_2O_{5.5}$ throw new light on the metal-insulator transition of Co$^{3+}$ Ba-cobaltites. An anomalous expansion of CoO$_6$ octahedra is observed at the phase transition on heating, while CoO$_5$ pyramids show the normal shrinking at the closing of the gap. The insulator-to-metal transition is attributed to a sudden excitation of some electrons in the octahedra ($t_{2g}^6$ state) into the Co $e_g$ band (final $t_{2g}^4e_g^2$ state). The $t_{2g}^5e_g^1$ state in the pyramids does not change and the structural study also rules out …
In our recent study, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 086402 (2012), we have revealed the intriguing properties of the ferromagnetic state in the Kondo lattice model with antiferromagnetic coupling in infinite dimensions: within the ferromagnetic metallic phase, the minority conduction electrons form a gap at the Fermi energy and do not participate in transport irrespective of interaction strength and filling. This half-metallic state is referred to as a spin-selective Kondo insulator. We here show that the spin-selective Kondo insulator can also be realized in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model by s…
La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ can be explained in terms of Mott localization in sharp contrast with the metallic behavior of FeSe and other parent parent compounds of iron superconductors. We demonstrate that the key ingredient that makes La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ a Mott insulator, rather than a correlated metal dominated by the Hund's coupling is the enhanced crystal-field splitting, accompanied by a smaller orbital-resolved kinetic energy. The strong deviation from orbital degeneracy introduced by the crystal-field splitting also pushes this materials close to an orbital-selective Mott transition. W…
We study the Mott metal-insulator transition in the two-band Hubbard model with different hopping amplitudes $t_1$ and $t_2$ for the two orbitals on the two-dimensional square lattice by using {\it non-magnetic} variational wave functions, similarly to what has been considered in the limit of infinite dimensions by dynamical mean-field theory. We work out the phase diagram at half filling (i.e., two electrons per site) as a function of $R=t_2/t_1$ and the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$, for two values of the Hund's coupling $J=0$ and $J/U=0.1$. Our results are in good agreement with previous dy…
Thin films provide a versatile platform to tune electron correlations and explore new physics in strongly correlated materials. Epitaxially grown thin films of the alkali-doped fulleride K$_{3+x}$C$_{60}$, for example, exhibit %various intriguing phenomena, including Mott transitions and superconductivity, depending on dimensionality and doping. Surprisingly, in the trilayer case, a strong electron-hole doping asymmetry has been observed in the superconducting phase, which is absent in the three-dimensional bulk limit. Using density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory, we show t…
Coupled transitions between distinct ordered phases are important aspects behind the rich phase complexity of correlated oxides that hinders our understanding of the underlying phenomena. For this reason, fundamental control over complex transitions has become a leading motivation of the designer approach to materials. We have devised a series of new superlattices by combining a Mott insulator and a correlated metal to form ultra-short period superlattices, which allow one to disentangle the simultaneous orderings in $RE$NiO$_3$. Tailoring an incommensurate heterostructure period relative to t…
Motivated by the unexplored complexity of phases present in the multiorbital Hubbard model, we analyze in this work the behavior of a degenerate two-orbital anisotropic Hubbard model at half filling where both orbitals have equal bandwidths and one orbital is constrained to be paramagnetic (PM), while the second one is allowed to have an antiferromagnetic (AF) solution. Such a model may be relevant for a large class of correlated materials with competing magnetic states in different orbitals like the recently discovered Fe-based superconductors. Using a dynamical cluster approximation we obser…
Topological insulators represent a new quantum state of matter that are insulating in the bulk but metallic on the edge or surface. In the Dirac surface state, it is well-established that the electron spin is locked with the crystal momentum. Here we report a new phenomenon of the spin texture locking with the orbital texture in a topological insulator Bi2Se3. We observe light-polarization-dependent spin texture of both the upper and lower Dirac cones that constitutes strong evidence of the orbital-dependent spin texture in Bi2Se3. The different spin texture detected in variable polarization g…
The orbital-selective electronic behavior is one of the most remarkable manifestations of strong electronic correlations in multi-orbital systems. A prominent example is the orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT), which is characterized by the coexistence of localized electrons in some orbitals, and itinerant electrons in other orbitals. The state-of-the-art theoretical description of the OSMT in two- and three-dimensional systems is based on local non-perturbative approximations to electronic correlations provided by dynamical mean-field theory or slave spin method. In this work we go beyon…
The microscopic mechanism of the metal-insulator transition is studied by orbital-resolved 51V NMR spectroscopy in a prototype of the quasi-one-dimensional system V6O13. We uncover that the transition involves a site-selective d orbital order lifting twofold orbital degeneracy in one of the two VO6 chains. The other chain leaves paramagnetic moments on the singly occupied dxy orbital across the transition. The two chains respectively stabilize an orbital-assisted spin-Peierls state and an antiferromagnetic long-range order in the ground state. The site-selective Mott transition may be a source…
Tailoring transport properties of strongly correlated electron systems in a controlled fashion counts among the dreams of materials scientists. In copper oxides, varying the carrier concentration is a tool to obtain high-temperature superconducting phases. In manganites, doping results in exotic physics such as insulator-metal transitions (IMT), colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), orbital- or charge-ordered (CO) or charge-disproportionate (CD) states. In most oxides, antiferromagnetic order and charge-disproportionation are asssociated with insulating behavior. Here we report the realization of …
Quasi-particle spectra of the layer perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ are calculated within Dynamical Mean Field Theory for increasing values of the on-site Coulomb energy $U$. At small $U$ the planar geometry splits the $t_{2g}$ bands near $E_F$ into a wide, two-dimensional $d_{xy}$ band and two narrow, nearly one-dimensional $d_{xz,yz}$ bands. At larger $U$, however, the spectral distribution of these states exhibit similar correlation features, suggesting a common metal-insulator transition for all $t_{2g}$ bands at the same critical $U$.
Strong electronic correlations, emerging from the parent Mott insulator phase, are key to copper-based high temperature superconductivity (HTS). By contrast, the parent phase of iron-based HTS is never a correlated insulator. But this distinction may be deceptive because Fe has five active d-orbitals while Cu has only one. In theory, such orbital multiplicity can generate a Hund's Metal state, in which alignment of the Fe spins suppresses inter-orbital fluctuations producing orbitally selective strong correlations. The spectral weights $Z_m$ of quasiparticles associated with different Fe orbit…
Iron pnictides and selenides display a variety of unusual magnetic phases originating from the interplay between electronic, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. Using powder inelastic neutron scattering on the two-leg ladder BaFe2Se3, we fully characterize the static and dynamic spin correlations associated with the Fe4 block state, an exotic magnetic ground state observed in this low-dimensional magnet and in Rb0.89Fe1.58Se2. All the magnetic excitations of the Fe4 block state predicted by an effective Heisenberg model with localized spins are observed below 300 meV and quantitatively re…
We investigate the infinite-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model at arbitrary band fillings. By means of the self-energy functional approach, we discuss the stability of the metallic state in the systems with same and different bandwidths. It is found that the Mott insulating phases are realized at commensurate band fillings. Furthermore, it is clarified that the orbital selective Mott phase with one orbital localized and the other itinerant is stabilized even at fractional band fillings in the system with different bandwidths.
A three band model containing the essential physics of transition metal oxides with partially filled t_2g shells is solved in the single-site dynamical mean field approximation, using the full rotationally invariant Slater-Kanamori interactions. We compute the metal-Mott insulator phase diagram in the space of chemical potential and interaction strength, determine the response of the different phases to perturbations which break the orbital symmetry, and establish the regimes in which an orbital selective Mott phase occurs. The results are compared to data on titanates, ruthenates, vanadates a…
Incorporating relativistic physics into quantum tunneling can lead to exotic behavior such as perfect transmission via Klein tunneling. Here, we probe the tunneling properties of spin-momentum locked relativistic fermions by designing and implementing a tunneling geometry that utilizes nanowires of the topological Kondo insulator candidate, SmB6. The nanowires are attached to the end of scanning tunneling microscope tips, and used to image the bicollinear stripe spin-order in the antiferromagnet Fe1.03Te with a Neel temperature of ~50 K. The antiferromagnetic stripes become invisible above 10 …
Using the first-principles density functional approach, we investigate Ca$_2$FeOsO$_6$, a material of double perovskite structure synthesized recently. According to the calculations, Ca$_2$FeOsO$_6$ is a ferrimagnetic Mott-insulator influenced by the cooperative effect of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Coulomb interactions of Fe-3$d$ and Os-5$d$ electrons, as well as the crystal field. When Fe is replaced with Ni, the system exhibits half metallic (HM) states desirable for spintronic applications. In [Ca$_2$Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$OsO$_6$]$_2$, HM ferrimagnetism is observed with $μ_{\rm tot}=2μ_{\rm B}…
Pyrochlore oxides are fascinating systems where strong, multi-orbital correlations in concert with geometrical frustration give rise to unanticipated physical properties. The detailed mechanism of the insulator-metal transitions (IMT) underpinning these phenomena is, however, ill-understood in general. Motivated thereby, we study the IMT in the pyrochlore ${\rm Hg_{2}Ru_{2}O_{7}}$ using LDA+DMFT. In contrast to the well-known examples of Mott transitions in TMO, we show that, in the negative charge-transfer situation characteristic of \hg, self-doping plays a crucial role in the emergence of a…
The layered metal phosphorous trisulfide FePS$_3$ is reported to be a Mott insulator at ambient conditions and to undergo structural and insulator-metal phase transitions under pressure. However, the character of the resulting metallic states has not been understood clearly so far. Here, we theoretically study the phase transitions of FePS$_3$ using first-principles methods based on density functional theory and embedded dynamical mean field theory. We find that the Mott transition in FePS$_3$ can be orbital-selective, with $t_{2g}$ states undergoing a correlation-induced insulator-to-metal tr…
While defects such as oxygen vacancies in correlated materials can modify their electronic properties dramatically, understanding the microscopic origin of electronic correlations in materials with defects has been elusive. Lanthanum nickelate with oxygen vacancies, LaNiO$_{3-x}$, exhibits the metal-to-insulator transition as the oxygen vacancy level $x$ increases from the stoichiometric LaNiO$_3$. In particular, LaNiO$_{2.5}$ exhibits a paramagnetic insulating phase, also stabilizing an antiferromagnetic state below $T_N\simeq152$K. Here, we study the electronic structure and energetics of La…
The effects of mass imbalance in a three-component Hubbard model are studied by the dynamical mean-field theory combined with exact diagonalization. The model describes a fermion-fermion mixture of two different particle species with a mass imbalance. One species is two-component fermion particles, and the other is single-component ones. The local interaction between particle species is considered isotropically. It is found that the mass imbalance can drive the mixture from insulator to metal. The insulator-metal transition is a species-selective-like transition of lighter mass particles and o…
Correlated materials with open-shell d- and f-ions having degenerate band edge states show a rich variety of interesting properties ranging from metal-insulator transition to unconventional superconductivity. The textbook view for the electronic structure of these materials is that mean-field approaches are inappropriate, as the interelectronic interaction U is required to open a band gap between the occupied and unoccupied degenerate states while retaining symmetry. We show that the latter scenario often defining what Mott insulators are, is in fact not needed for the 3d binary oxides MnO, Fe…
While the phase diagrams of the one- and multi-orbital Hubbard model have been well studied, the physics of real Mott insulators is often much richer, material dependent, and poorly understood. In the prototype Mott insulator V$_{2}$O$_{3}$, chemical pressure was initially believed to explain why the paramagnetic-metal to antiferromagnetic-insulator transition temperature is lowered by Ti doping while Cr doping strengthens correlations, eventually rendering the high-temperature phase paramagnetic insulating. However, this scenario has been recently shown both experimentally and theoretically t…
We introduce a valence-bond dynamical mean-field theory of doped Mott insulators. It is based on a minimal cluster of two orbitals, each associated with a different region of momentum space and hybridized to a self-consistent bath. The low-doping regime is characterized by singlet formation and the suppression of quasiparticles in the antinodal regions, leading to the formation of Fermi arcs. This is described in terms of an orbital-selective transition in reciprocal space. The calculated tunneling and photoemission spectra are consistent with the phenomenology of the normal state of cuprates.…
We study the phase transition in Cu-substituted iron-based superconductors with a new developed real-space Green's function method. We find that Cu substitution has strong effect on the orbital-selective Mott transition introduced by the Hund's rule coupling. The redistribution of the orbital occupancy which is caused by the increase of the Hund's rule coupling, gives rise to the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in the half-filled $d_{xy}$ orbital. We also find that more and more electronic states appear inside that Mott gap of the $d_{xy}$ orbital with the increase of Cu substitution, …
We theoretically explore the mechanism of the colossal magnetoresistance in manganese oxides by explicitly taking into account the phase competition between the double-exchange ferromagnetism and the charge-ordered insulator. We find that quenched disorder causes a drastic change of the multicritical phase diagram by destroying the charge-ordered state selectively. As a result, there appears a nontrivial phenomenon of the disorder-induced insulator-to-metal transition in the multicritical regime. On the contrary, the disorder induces a highly-insulating state above the transition temperature w…
The electronic structure of SrRuO$_3$ thin film with thickness from 50 to 1 unit cell (u.c.) is investigated via the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) technique at the O K-edge to unravel the intriguing interplay of orbital and charge degrees of freedom. We found that orbital-selective quantum confinement effect (QCE) induces the splitting of Ru $4d$ orbitals. At the same time, we observed a clear suppression of the electron-hole continuum across the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) occurring at the 4 u.c. sample. From these two clear observations we conclude that QCE gives rise to…
We report a detail theoretical study of the electronic structure and phase stability of transition metal oxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO in their paramagnetic cubic B1 structure by employing dynamical mean-field theory of correlated electrons combined with \emph{ab initio} band structure methods (DFT+DMFT). Our calculations reveal that under pressure these materials exhibit a Mott insulator-metal transition (IMT) which is accompanied by a simultaneous collapse of local magnetic moments and lattice volume, implying a complex interplay between chemical bonding and electronic correlations. Moreover…
We provide experimental and theoretical evidence for a novel type of pressure-induced insulator-metal transition characterized by site-selective delocalization of the electrons. Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electrical transport measurements on Fe$_2$O$_3$ to 100 GPa, along with dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations, reveal this site-selective Mott transition between 50 and 68 GPa, such that the metallization can be described by ($^\rm{VI}$Fe$^{3+\rm{HS}}$)$_2$O$_3$ [$R\bar{3}c$ structure] $\overrightarrow{\tiny\rm{50~GPa}}$ ($^\rm{VIII}$Fe$^{3+\rm{HS~VI}}$Fe$^\rm…
