We introduce a valence-bond dynamical mean-field theory of doped Mott insulators. It is based on a minimal cluster of two orbitals, each associated with a different region of momentum space and hybridized to a self-consistent bath. The low-doping regime is characterized by singlet formation and the suppression of quasiparticles in the antinodal regions, leading to the formation of Fermi arcs. This is described in terms of an orbital-selective transition in reciprocal space. The calculated tunneling and photoemission spectra are consistent with the phenomenology of the normal state of cuprates. We derive a low-energy description of these effects using a generalization of the slave-boson method.
We study the superconducting state of the hole-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model using Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory, with the Lanczos method as impurity solver. In the under-doped regime, we find a natural decomposition of the one-particle (photoemission) energy-gap into two components. The gap in the nodal regions, stemming from the anomalous self-energy, decreases with decreasing doping. The antinodal gap has an additional contribution from the normal component of the self-energy, inherited from the normal-state pseudogap, and it increases as the Mott insulating phase is approached…
We apply the boson exchange parquet solver for dual fermions to the half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice at small interaction. Our results establish that, in this regime, nonlocal vertex corrections play an important role in the formation of the pseudogap. Namely, in comparison to the simpler ladder approximation, these additional vertex corrections included in the parquet equations enhance the coupling of spin fluctuations with the quasiparticles. The pseudogap thus opens already at a higher temperature, in quantitative agreement with the numerically exact diagrammatic Monte Carlo. T…
We have studied Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{1.6}$Nd$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ using Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy in the optimal and overdoped regions of the phase diagram. We identify a narrow crossover region in the electronic structure between the nodal and antinodal regions associated with the deviation from a pure d-wave gap function, an abrupt increase of the quasiparticle lifetime, the formation of Fermi arcs above T$_c$, and a sudden shift of the bosonic mode energy from higher energy, $\sim${60meV}, near the nodal direction, to lower energy, $\sim${20meV}, near the antinodal direction. Our work…
We study a model of a stripe ordered doped antiferromagnet consisting of coupled Hubbard ladders which can be tuned from quasi-one-dimensional to two-dimensional. We solve for the magnetization and charge density on the ladders by Hartree-Fock theory and find a set of solutions with lightly doped ``spin-stripes'' which are antiferromagnetic and more heavily doped anti-phase ``charge-stripes''. Both the spin- and charge-stripes have electronic spectral weight near the Fermi energy but in different regions of the Brillouin zone; the spin-stripes in the ``nodal'' region, near (π/2,π/2), and the c…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on underdoped (La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$)CuO$_4$ system show that, at energies below 70 meV, the quasiparticle peak is well defined around the ($π$/2,$π$/2) nodal region and disappears rather abruptly when the momentum is changed from the nodal point to the ($π$,0) antinodal point along the underlying ``Fermi surface''. It indicates that there is an extra low energy scattering mechanism acting upon the antinodal quasiparticles. We propose that this mechanism is the scattering of quasiparticles across the nearly parallel segments of the Fermi sur…
The complexity of competing orders in cuprates has recently been multiplied by a number of bulk evidences of charge ordering with wavevector that connects the antinodal region of the Fermi surface. This results contradicts many spectroscopic results of the nodal nesting. To resolve this issue, we carry out a unified study of the resulting electronic fingerprints of both nodal and antinodal nestings (NNs/ANs), and compare with angle-resolved photoemission, scanning tunneling spectroscopic data, as well as bulk sensitive Hall effect measurements. Our result makes several definitive distinctions …
A variational theory is proposed for the quasiparticle excitation in high T$_{c}$ cuprates. The theory goes beyond the usual Gutzwiller projected mean field state description by including the spin-charge recombination effect in the RVB background. The spin-charge recombination effect is found to qualitatively alter the behavior of the quasiparticle charge as a function of doping and cause considerable anisotropy in quasiparticle weight on the Fermi surface.
High-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors are characterized by a strong momentum-dependent anisotropy between the low energy excitations along the Brillouin zone diagonal (nodal direction) and those along the Brillouin zone face (antinodal direction). Most obvious is the d-wave superconducting gap, with the largest magnitude found in the antinodal direction and no gap in the nodal direction. Additionally, while antinodal quasiparticle excitations appear only below $T_c$, superconductivity is thought to be indifferent to nodal excitations as they are regarded robust and insensitive to $T_c$. Here we r…
We study the basic features of the local density of states (LDOS) observed in STM experiments on high-T$_c$ d-wave superconductors in the context of a minimal model of a d-wave superconductor which has {\it weakly} modulated off-diagonal disorder. We show that the low and high energy features of the LDOS are consistent with the observed experimental patterns and in particular, the anisotropic local domain features at high energies. At low energies, we obtain not only the scattering peaks predicted by the octet model, but also weak features that should be experimentally accessible. Finally, we …
A characteristic feature of the copper oxide high-temperature superconductors is the dichotomy between the electronic excitations along the nodal (diagonal) and antinodal (parallel to the Cu-O bonds) directions in momentum space, generally assumed to be linked to the "d-wave" symmetry of the superconducting state. Angle-resolved photoemission measurements in the superconducting state have revealed a quasiparticle spectrum with a d-wave gap structure that exhibits a maximum along the antinodal direction and vanishes along the nodal direction. Subsequent measurements have shown that, at low dopi…
Both electronic Raman scattering (ERS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) revealed two energy scales for the gap in different momentum spaces in the cuprates. However, the interpretations were different, and the gap values were also different in two experiments. In order to clarify the origin of these discrepancies, we directly compared ERS and ARPES by calculating ERS from the experimental data of ARPES through the Kubo formula. The calculated ERS spectra were in good agreement with the experimental results except for the B$_{1g}$ peak energies. The doping-dependent B$_{2g}$ pea…

Superconductivity in underdoped cuprates emerges from an unusual electronic state characterised by nodal quasiparticles and an antinodal pseudogap. The relation between this state and superconductivity is intensely studied but remains controversial. The discrimination between competing theoretical models is hindered by a lack of electronic structure data from related doped Mott insulators. Here we report the doping evolution of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, a close analogue to underdoped cuprates. We demonstrate that metallicity emerges from a rapid collapse of the Mott gap wit…
Raman and ARPES experiments have demonstrated that in superconducting underdoped cuprates nodal and antinodal regions are characterized by two energy scales instead of the one expected in BCS. The nodal scale decreases with underdoping while the antinodal one increases. Contrary to the behavior expected for an increasing energy scale, the antinodal Raman intensity decreases with decreasing doping. Using the Yang, Rice and Zhang (YRZ) model, we show that these features are a consequence of the non-conventional nature of the superconducting state in which superconductivity and pseudogap correlat…
We report a doping dependant Electronic Raman Scattering (ERS) study of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) single crystals. We investigate the dynamics of the antinodal and nodal quasiparticles. We show that the dynamical response of the antinodal quasiparticles is strongly reduced towards the underdoped regime in both the normal and superconducting states. When probing the nodal quasiparticles, we are able to distinguish between the energy scale of the pseudogap and that of the superconducting gap. A simple model relating the suppression of the dynamical response of the antinodal quasiparticles to…
A major challenge in understanding the cuprate superconductors is to clarify the nature of the fundamental electronic correlations that lead to the pseudogap phenomenon. Here we use ultrashort light pulses to prepare a non-thermal distribution of excitations and capture novel properties that are hidden at equilibrium. Using a broadband (0.5-2 eV) probe we are able to track the dynamics of the dielectric function, unveiling an anomalous decrease of the scattering rate of the charge carriers in a pseudogap-like region of the temperature ($T$) and hole-doping ($p$) phase diagram. In this region, …
We report electronic Raman scattering measurements on optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7 where Zn or Ni impurities have been substituted by Cu. Using Raman selection rules, we have probed the superconducting gap in the nodal and antinodal regions. We show that under impurity substitutions, the energy of the antinodal peak detected in the superconducting state is not related to the critical temperature Tc and that signatures of superconductivity disappear in the nodal regions. Our experimental findings advocate in favor of gapless arcs around the nodes. The breakdown of the relationship between the anti…
We introduce a method for summing Feynman's perturbation series based on diagrammatic Monte Carlo that significantly improves its convergence properties. This allows us to investigate in a controllable manner the pseudogap regime of the Hubbard model and to study the nodal/antinodal dichotomy at low doping and intermediate coupling. Marked differences from the weak coupling scenario are manifest, such as a higher degree of incoherence at the antinodes than at the `hot spots'. Our results show that the pseudogap and reduction of quasiparticle coherence at the antinode is due to antiferromagneti…
Samples of Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4), an electron-doped high temperature superconducting cuprate (HTSC), near optimal doping at x = 0.155 were measured via angle resolved photoemission (ARPES). We report a renormalization feature in the self energy ("kink") in the band dispersion at 50 - 60 meV present in nodal and antinodal cuts across the Fermi surface. Specifically, while the kink had previously only been seen in the antinodal region, it is now observed also in the nodal region, reminiscent of what has been observed in hole-doped cuprates.
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements have established the phenomenon of kink in band dispersion of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors. However, systematic studies of the kink in electron-doped cuprates are still lacking experimentally. We performed $in$-$situ$ ARPES measurements on ${\rm La}_{2-x}{\rm Ce}_x{\rm CuO}_{4\pmδ}$ (LCCO) thin films over a wide electron doping ($n$) range from 0.05 to 0.23. While the nodal kink is nearly invisible, an antinodal kink around 45 meV, surviving above 200 K, is observed for $n\sim0.05-0.19$, whose position is roughly indepe…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on (La_1.4-xNd_0.6Sr_x)CuO_4, a model system with static stripes, and (La_1.85Sr_0.15)CuO_4, a high temperature superconductor (T_c=40K) with dynamic stripes. In addition to the straight segments near (pi, 0) and (0, pi) antinodal regions, we have identified the existence of nodal spectral weight and its associated Fermi surface in the electronic structure of both systems. The ARPES spectra in the nodal region show well-defined Fermi cut-off, indicating a metallic character of this charge-ordered state. This observ…
The superconducting state of underdoped cuprates is often described in terms of a single energy-scale, associated with the maximum of the (d-wave) gap. Here, we report on electronic Raman scattering results, which show that the gap function in the underdoped regime is characterized by two energy scales, depending on doping in opposite manners. Their ratios to the maximum critical temperature are found to be universal in cuprates. Our experimental results also reveal two different quasiparticle dynamics in the underdoped superconducting state, associated with two regions of momentum space: noda…
We argue that the shape of the dispersion along the nodal and antinodal directions in the cuprates can be understood as a consequence of the interaction of the electrons with collective spin excitations. In the normal state, the dispersion displays a crossover at an energy where the decay into spin fluctuations becomes relevant. In the superconducting state, the antinodal dispersion is strongly affected by the spin resonance and displays an S-shape whose magnitude scales with the resonance intensity. For nodal fermions, relevant spin excitations do not have resonance behavior, rather they are …
The pseudogap phase occurring in cuprate and organic superconductors is analyzed based on the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) approach to the Hubbard model. A cluster embedded in a self-consistent bath is studied. With increasing Coulomb repulsion, U, the antinodal point [k=(pi,0)] displays a gradual suppression of spectral density of states around the Fermi energy which is not observed at the nodal point [k=(pi/2,pi/2)]. The opening of the antinodal pseudogap is related to the internal structure of the cluster and the much weaker bath-cluster couplings at the antinodal than nodal point.…
We present an approach to the normal state of cuprate superconductors which is based on a minimal cluster extension of dynamical mean-field theory. Our approach is based on an effective two-impurity model embedded in a self-consistent bath. The two degrees of freedom of this effective model can be associated to the nodal and antinodal regions of momentum space. We find a metal-insulator transition which is selective in momentum space: At low doping quasiparticles are destroyed in the antinodal region, while they remain protected in the nodal region, leading to the formation of apparent Fermi a…
We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission to measure the nodal non-equilibrium electronic states in various dopings of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. We find that the initial pump-induced transient signal of these ungapped states is strongly affected by the onset of the superconducting gap at $T_c$, superconducting pairing fluctuations at $T_p$, and the pseudogap at $T^*$. Moreover, $T_p$ marks a suggestive threshold in the fluence-dependent transient signal, with the appearance of a critical fluence below $T_p$ that corresponds to the energy required to break apart all Cooper pairs. These…
The strange-metal phase of the cuprate high temperature superconductors, above where the superconductivity sets in as a function of temperature, is widely considered more exotic and mysterious than the superconductivity itself. Here, based upon detailed angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$$_+$$_δ$ over a wide range of doping levels, we present a new unifying phenomenology for the non-Fermi liquid normal-state interactions (scattering rates) in the nodal direction. This new phenomenology has a continuously varying power law exponent (hence named a …
We study the single hole tt't''J-model numerically to address the momentum space anisotropy found in doped Mott insulators. A simple two band picture to understand how the doped hole is screened by the spin background in states of different momenta is proposed. In this picture, the disparity between the nodal and antinodal regions, observed by experiments in the underdoped cuprate superconductors, follows from local energetic considerations and amounts to the distinction between well defined quasiparticle behavior and spin-charge separation related phenomenology.
Motivated by the recent experimental data [Phys. Rev. B 79, 100502 (2009)] indicating the existence of a pure stripe charge order over unprecedently wide temperature range in La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4, we investigate the temperature-induced melting of the metallic stripe phase. In spite of taking into account local dynamic correlations within a real-space dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model, we observe a mean-field like melting of the stripe order irrespective of the choice of the next-nearest neighbor hopping. The temperature dependence of the single-particle spectral function …
The four-site DCA method of including intersite correlations in the dynamical mean field theory is used to investigate the metal-insulator transition in the Hubbard model. At half filling a gap-opening transition is found to occur as the interaction strength is increased beyond a critical value. The gapped behavior found in the 4-site DCA approximation is shown to be associated with the onset of strong antiferromagnetic and singlet correlations and the transition is found to be potential energy driven. It is thus more accurately described as a Slater phenomenon (induced by strong short ranged …
In contrast to a complex feature of antinodal state, suffering from competing order(s), the "pure" pairing gap of cuprates is detected in the nodal region, which therefore holds the key to the superconducting mechanism. The pairing gap has been viewed to be rather conventional, closing at the superconducting transition temperature (Tc). However, the density of states contributed from the nodal region was claimed to have a gap-like structure even above Tc. Here we present a missing evidence for a single-particle gap near the node signifying the realization of a phase incoherent d-wave supercond…

The linear-in-temperature resistivity is one of the important mysteries in the strange metal state of high-temperature cuprate superconductors. To uncover this anomalous property, the energy-momentum-dependent imaginary part of the self-energy Im ${\rm Σ}(k, ω)$ holds the key information. Here we perform systematic doping, momentum, and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of electron-doped cuprate ${\rm La}_{2-x}{\rm Ce}_x{\rm CuO}_4$ and extract the evolution of the strange metal scattering in momentum space. At low doping levels and low temperatures, …
The parent compounds of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors are Mott insulators. It has been generally agreed that understanding the physics of the doped Mott insulators is essential to understanding the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. A natural starting point is to elucidate the basic electronic structure of the parent compound. Here we report comprehensive high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, a Mott insulator and a prototypical parent compound of the cuprates. Multiple underlying Fermi surface sheets are revealed for the …
Recent experiments have revealed incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) in the pseudogap regime in underdoped cuprates, e.g. YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. However, its relationship with the pseudogap is still controversial. In this work, we take a phenomenological synthesis of the doped resonating valence bond (RVB) state and the CDW order. Starting from the Yang-Rice-Zhang Green's function ansatz for the doped RVB state [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 73}, 174501 (2006)], in which the Fermi surface is partially truncated into four nodal hole-like Fermi pockets by the antinodal RVB gap,…
High-temperature superconductors at zero doping can be considered strongly correlated two-dimensional Mott insulators. The understanding of the connection between the superconductor and the Mott insulator hits at the heart of the high-temperature superconducting mechanism. In this paper we investigate the zero-temperature doping-driven evolution of a superconductor towards the Mott insulator in a two dimensional electron model, relevant for high temperature superconductivity. To this purpose we use a cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory. Our results show that a standard (BCS) d-wav…
The phase diagram of the high-Tc cuprates is dominated by the Mott insulating phase of the parent compounds. As we approach it from large doping, a standard Fermi-liquid gradually turns into a bad non-Fermi liquid metal, a process which culminates in the pseudogap regime, in which the antinodal region in momentum space acquires a gap before reaching a fully gapped Mott state. Here we show that experiments for electron- and hole-doped BaFe2As2 support an analogous scenario. The doping evolution is dominated by the influence of a Mott insulator that would be realized for half-filled conduction b…
A resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of overdamped spin-excitations in slightly underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) with $x=0.12$ and $0.145$ is presented. Three high-symmetry directions have been investigated: (1) the antinodal $(0,0)\rightarrow (1/2,0)$, (2) the nodal $(0,0)\rightarrow (1/4,1/4)$ and (3) the zone boundary direction $(1/2,0)\rightarrow (1/4,1/4)$ connecting these two. The overdamped excitations exhibit strong dispersions along (1) and (3), whereas a much more modest dispersion is found along (2). This is in strong contrast to the undoped compound La$_{2}…
