Motivated by the recent experimental data [Phys. Rev. B 79, 100502 (2009)] indicating the existence of a pure stripe charge order over unprecedently wide temperature range in La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4, we investigate the temperature-induced melting of the metallic stripe phase. In spite of taking into account local dynamic correlations within a real-space dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model, we observe a mean-field like melting of the stripe order irrespective of the choice of the next-nearest neighbor hopping. The temperature dependence of the single-particle spectral function shows the stripe induced formation of a flat band around the antinodal points accompanied by the opening a gap in the nodal direction.
We investigate melting of stripe phases in the overdoped regime x>0.3 of the two-dimensional t-t'-U Hubbard model, using a spin rotation invariant form of the slave boson representation. We show that the spin and charge order disappear simultaneously, and discuss a mechanism stabilizing bond-centered and site-centered stripe structures.
We study theoretically quantum melting transitions of stripe order in a metallic environment, and the associated reconstruction of the electronic Fermi surface. We show that such quantum phase transitions can be continuous in situations where the stripe melting occurs by proliferating pairs of dislocations in the stripe order parameter without proliferating single dislocations. We develop an intuitive picture of such phases as "Stripe Loop Metals" where the fluctuating stripes form closed loops of arbitrary size at long distances. We obtain a controlled critical theory of a few different conti…
We develop a concrete theory of continuous stripe melting quantum phase transitions in two dimensional metals and the associated Fermi surface reconstruction. Such phase transitions are strongly coupled but yet theoretically tractable in situations where the stripe ordering is destroyed by proliferating doubled dislocations of the charge stripe order. The resulting non-Landau quantum critical point (QCP) has strong stripe fluctuations which we show decouple dynamically from the Fermi surface even though static stripe ordering reconstructs the Fermi surface. We discuss connections to various st…
Commensurability effects for nickelates have been studied by the first neutron experiments on La5/3Sr1/3NiO4. Upon cooling, this system undergoes three successive phase transitions associated with quasi-two-dimensional (2D) commensurate charge and spin stripe ordering in the NiO$_2$ planes. The two lower temperature phases (denoted as phase II and III) are stripe lattice states with quasi-long-range in-plane charge correlation. When the lattice of 2D charge stripes melts, it goes through an intermediate glass state (phase I) before becoming a disordered liquid state. This glass state shows sho…
We theoretically discuss the mechanism for the peculiar nonlinear conduction in quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors θ-(BEDT-TTF)2X [BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] through the melting of stripe-type charge order. An extended Peierls-Hubbard model attached to metallic electrodes is investigated by a nonequilibrium Green's function technique. A novel current-voltage characteristic appears in a coexistent state of stripe-type and nonstripe 3-fold charge orders, where the applied bias melts mainly the stripe-type charge order through the reduction of lattice distortion, wherea…
We discuss striped phases as a state of matter intermediate between two extreme states: a crystalline state and a segregated state. We argue that this state is very sensitive to weak interactions, compared to those stabilizing a crystalline state, and to anisotropies. Moreover, under suitable conditions a 2D system in a striped phase decouples into (quasi) 1D chains. These observations are based on results of our studies of an extension of a microscopic quantum model of crystallization, proposed originally by Kennedy and Lieb.
We show that disruption of charge-density-wave (stripe) order by charge transfer excitation, enhances the superconducting phase rigidity in La_{1.885}Ba_{0.115}CuO_4 (LBCO). Time-Resolved Resonant Soft X-Ray Diffraction demonstrates that charge order melting is prompt following near-infrared photoexcitation whereas the crystal structure remains intact for moderate fluences. THz time-domain spectroscopy reveals that, for the first 2 ps following photoexcitation, a new Josephson Plasma Resonance edge, at higher frequency with respect to the equilibrium edge, is induced indicating enhanced superc…
Quantum fluctuations of periodic domain-wall arrays in two-dimensional incommensurate states at zero temperature are investigated using the elastic theory in the vicinity of the commensurate-incommensurate transition point. Both stripe and honeycomb structures of domain walls with short-range interactions are considered. It is revealed that the stripes melt and become a stripe liquid in a large-wall-spacing (low-density) region due to dislocations created by quantum fluctuations. This quantum melting transition is of second order and characterized by the three-dimensional XY universality class…

Comment on "Light-induced melting of competing stripe orders without introducing superconductivity in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$" (arXiv:2306.07869v1)
For a gapped disordered many-body system with both internal and translation symmetry, one can define the corresponding weak and strong Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases. A strong SPT phase is protected by the internal symmetry $G$ only while a weak SPT phase, fabricated by alignment of strong SPT state in a lower dimension, requires additional discrete translation symmetry protection. In this paper, we construct a phase transition between weak and strong SPT phase in strongly interacting boson system. The starting point of our construction is the superconducting Dirac fermions with p…
The sodium reordering in NaxCoO2 in the vicinity of room temperature is rationalized at high x in terms of phase transitions between square and striped phases. A striking hexagon-of-hexagons diffraction pattern observed for x=0.78 can be reproduced using coexisting square and striped phases that are related by simple shear deformations. All compositions exhibit a partial melting transition to a disordered stripe phase just below room temperature, which alters the topology of the electrical conduction pathways.
Photoinduced melting of horizontal-stripe charge orders in quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors θ-(BEDT-TTF)2RbZn(SCN)4[BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] and α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 is investigated theoretically. By numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we study the photoinduced dynamics in extended Peierls-Hubbard models on anisotropic triangular lattices within the Hartree-Fock approximation. The melting of the charge order needs more energy for θ-(BEDT-TTF)2RbZn(SCN)4 than for α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a consequence of the larger stabilization energy in θ-(B…
Based on an effective model of a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator, we show that a doped hole will induce a dipole-like spin configuration in a spin ordered phase at low doping. The kinetic energy of doped holes is severely frustrated and a hole-dipole object is actually localized or self-trapped in space. Without a balance from the kinetic energy, the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between doped holes will dominate the low-energy physics, leading to an inhomogeneity instability as hole-dipoles collapse into stripes. Both antiphase metallic stripes of quarter-filling and antiphase i…
Recent experiments indicate that the tendency toward the formation of unidirectional charge density waves ("stripes") is common to various underdoped cuprates. We discuss momentum-resolved spectral properties of valence-bond stripes, comparing the situations of ideal and short-range stripe order, the latter being relevant for weak and/or disorder-pinned stripes. We find clear signatures of ordered stripes, although matrix element effects suppress most shadow band features. With decreasing stripe correlation length, stripe signatures are quickly washed out, the only remaining effect being a bro…
The response of charge stripes to an external electric field applied perpendicular to the stripe direction is studied within a diagrammatic approach for both weak and strong pinning by random impurities. The sound-like mode of the stripes described as elastic strings moves to finite frequency due to impurity pinning. By calculating the optical conductivity we determine this characteristic energy scale for both a single stripe and an array of interacting stripes. The results explain the anomalous far-infrared peak observed recently in optical-conductivity measurements on cuprates.
Resting on the gauge theory of topological quantum melting in 2+1 dimensions, we predict that a superconductor characterized by crystalline correlations on a length scale large compared to the lattice carries a new collective mode: the massive shear photon. This mode is visible in the electrodynamic response and the ramification of our theory is that electron energy loss spectroscopy can be employed to prove or disprove the existence of dynamical stripes in cuprate superconductors.
Superconductivity in the vicinity of a competing electronic order often manifests itself with a superconducting dome, centred at a presumed quantum critical point in the phase diagram. This common feature, found in many unconventional superconductors, has supported a prevalent scenario that fluctuations or partial melting of a parent order are essential for inducing or enhancing superconductivity. Here we present a contrary example, found in IrTe2 nanoflakes of which the superconducting dome is identified well inside the parent stripe charge ordering phase in the thickness-dependent phase diag…
It was recently demonstrated that the anisotropic phonon heat transport behavior is a good probe of the stripe formation in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) [X. F. Sun {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 67}, 104503 (2003)]. Using this probe, we examined an electron-doped cuprate Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_xCuO_4 (PLCCO) and found that essentially the same features as those in LSCO are observed. Moreover, the in-plane resistivity ρ_{ab} of lightly-doped PLCCO shows metallic behavior (dρ_{ab}/dT > 0) in the Néel ordered state with a mobility comparable to that in LSCO. It is discussed that these peculiar propert…
We investigate the hole and lattice dynamics in a prototypical high temperature superconducting system La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} using infrared spectroscopy. By exploring the anisotropy in the electronic response of CuO2 planes we show that our results support the notion of stripes. Nevertheless, charge ordering effects are not apparent in the phonon spectra. All crystals show only the expected infrared active modes for orthorhombic phases without evidence for additional peaks that may be indicative of static charge ordering. Strong electron-phonon interaction manifests itself through the Fano linesh…
Understanding orbital ordered (OO) Mott insulating states lies at the heart of a consistent resolution of the colossal magneto-resistance (CMR) observed in manganites, where its melting induces a low-$T$ insulator-metal transition for $0.25 \le x\le 0.45$. Motivated thereby, we study the OO states in a planar model for bilayer manganites using DMFT and finite-size diagonalisation methods. We derive the correct OO ground states observed in manganites for $x=0,{1/2},{2/3},{3/4}$ in exact agreement with observations, including the charge-orbital-magnetic ordered stripe phases for $x>{1/2}$. These…
We present the theory of the effect of thermal fluctuations on commensurate "p x p" density wave ordering on the square lattice (p >= 3, integer). For the case in which this order is lost by a second order transition, we argue that the adjacent state is generically an incommensurate striped state, with commensurate p-periodic long range order along one direction, and incommensurate quasi-long-range order along the orthogonal direction. We also present the routes by which the fully disordered high temperature state can be reached. For p=4, and at special commensurate densities, the "4 x 4" comm…
Even as the understanding of the mechanism behind correlated insulating states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene converges towards various kinds of spontaneous symmetry breaking, the metallic "normal state" above the insulating transition temperature remains mysterious, with its excessively high entropy and linear-in-temperature resistivity. In this work, we focus on the effects of fluctuations of the order-parameters describing correlated insulating states at integer fillings of the low-energy flat bands on charge transport. Motivated by the observation of heterogeneity in the order-par…
Optical excitation of stripe-ordered La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ has been shown to transiently enhance superconducting tunneling between the CuO$_2$ planes. This effect was revealed by a blue-shift, or by the appearance of a Josephson Plasma Resonance in the terahertz-frequency optical properties. Here, we show that this photo-induced state can be strengthened by the application of high external magnetic fields oriented along the c-axis. For a 7-Tesla field, we observe up to a ten-fold enhancement in the transient interlayer phase correlation length, accompanied by a two-fold increase in the relax…
Based on the mean-field method applied either to the extended single-band Hubbard model or to the single-band Peierls-Hubbard Hamiltonian we study the stability of both site-centered and bond-centered charge domain walls. The difference in energy between these phases is found to be small. Therefore, moderate perturbations to the pure Hubbard model, such as next nearest hopping, lattice anisotropy, or coupling to the lattice, induce phase transitions, shown in the corresponding phase diagrams. In addition, we determine for stable phases charge and magnetization densities, double occupancy, kine…
The interplay between crystal symmetry and charge stripe order in Pr1.67Sr0.33NiO4 and Nd1.67Sr0.33NiO4 has been studied by means of single crystal x-ray diffraction. In contrast to tetragonal La1.67Sr0.33NiO4, these crystals are orthorhombic. The corresponding distortion of the NiO2 planes is found to dictate the direction of the charge stripes, similar to the case of diagonal spin stripes in the insulating phase of La2-xSrxCuO4. In particular, diagonal stripes seem to always run along the short a-axis, which is the direction of the octahedral tilt axis. In contrast, no influence of the cryst…
Doped antiferromagnets host a vast array of physical properties and learning how to control them is one of the biggest challenges of condensed matter physics. La$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$NiO$_4$ (LSNO) is a classic example of such a material. At low temperatures holes introduced via substitution of La by Sr segregate into lines to form boundaries between magnetically ordered domains in the form of stripes. The stripes become dynamic at high temperatures, but LSNO remains insulating presumably because an interplay between magnetic correlations and electron-phonon coupling localizes charge carriers. Mag…
We calculate within a mean-field theory the spectral signatures of various striped d-wave superconducting phases. We consider both in-phase and anti-phase modulations of the superconducting order across a stripe boundary, and the effects of coexisting inhomogeneous orders, including spin stripes, charge stripes, and modulated d-density-wave. We find that the anti-phase modulated d-wave superconductor exhibits zero-energy spectral weight, primarily along extended arcs in momentum space. Concomitantly, a Fermi surface appears and typically includes both open segments and closed pockets. When wea…
Fractons are particles that cannot move in one or more directions without paying energy proportional to their displacement. Here, we introduce the concept of symmetry enforced fractonicity, in which particles are fractons in the presence of a global symmetry, but are free to move in its absence. A simple example is dislocation defects in a two-dimensional crystal, which are restricted to move only along their Burgers vector due to particle number conservation. Utilizing a recently developed dual rank-2 tensor gauge description of elasticity, we show that accounting for their symmetry enforced …
In two-dimensional (2D) systems, the melting from a solid to an isotropic liquid can occur via an intermediate phase that retains orientational order. However, in 2D superconducting vortex lattices, the effect of orientational correlations on transport, and their interplay with disorder remain open questions. Here we study a 2D weakly pinned vortex system in amorphous MoGe films over an extensive range of temperatures ($\bm{T}$) and perpendicular magnetic fields ($\bm{H}$) using linear and nonlinear transport measurements. We find that, at low fields, the resistivity obeys the Vogel-Fulcher-Ta…
The presence of a small concentration of in-plane Fe dopants in La$_{1.87}$Sr$_{0.13}$Cu$_{0.99}$Fe$_{0.01}$O$_4$ is known to enhance stripe-like spin and charge density wave (SDW and CDW) order, and suppress the superconducting $T_c$. Here, we show that it also induces highly two-dimensional (2D) superconducting correlations that have been argued to be signatures of a new form of superconducting order, so-called pair-density-wave (PDW) order. In addition, using the resonant soft x-ray scattering, we find that the 2D superconducting fluctuation is strongly associated with the CDW stripe. In pa…
Frustrated magnets host the promises of material realizations of new paradigm of quantum matter, while direct comparison of unbiased model calculations with experimental measurements is still very challenging. Here, we design and implement a protocol of employing many-body computation methodologies for accurate model calculation -- both equilibrium and dynamical properties -- of a frustrated rare-earth magnet TmMgGaO$_4$ (TMGO), which perfectly explains the corresponding experimental findings. Our results confirm TMGO is an ideal realization of triangular-lattice Ising model with an intrinsic …
Lattice effects on photo-excited states in interacting charge frustrated system are examined. Real time dynamics in the interacting spinless fermion model on a triangular lattice coupled to lattice vibration are analyzed by applying the exact diagonalization method combined with the classical equation of motion. A photo-induced phase transition from the horizontal stripe-type charge order (CO) to the 3-fold CO occurs through a characteristic intermediate time domain. By analyzing the time evolution in detail, we find that this characteristic dynamics are seen when the electron and lattice sect…
The magnetic excitations in the stripe phase of high-T_c superconductors are investigated in a model of spin ladders which are effectively coupled via charged stripes. Starting from the effective single-triplon model for the isolated spin ladder, the quasi-one-dimensional spin system can be described straightforwardly. Very good agreement is obtained with recent neutron scattering data on La_(15/8)Ba_(1/8)CuO_4 (no spin gap) and YBa_2Cu_3O_(6.6) (gapped). The signature of quasi-one-dimensional spin physics in a single-domain stripe phase is predicted.
We predict the robust existence of a novel quantum orbital stripe order in the $p$-band Bose-Hubbard model of two-dimensional triangular optical lattices with cold bosonic atoms. An orbital angular momentum moment is formed on each site exhibiting a stripe order both in the superfluid and Mott-insulating phases. The stripe order spontaneously breaks time-reversal, lattice translation and rotation symmetries. In addition, it induces staggered plaquette bond currents in the superfluid phase. Possible signatures of this stripe order in the time of flight experiment are discussed.
A prevailing description of the stripe phase in underdoped cuprate superconductors is that the charge carriers (holes) phase segregate on a microscopic scale into hole rich and hole poor regions. We report resonant elastic x-ray scattering measurements of stripe-ordered La$_{1.475}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ at the Cu $L$ and O $K$ absorption edges that identify an additional feature of stripe order. Analysis of the energy dependence of the scattering intensity reveals that the dominant signature of the stripe order is a spatial modulation in the energies of Cu 3d and O 2p states rather tha…
We report on a thermoelectric investigation of the stripe and superconducting phases of the cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ near the $x=1/8$ doping known to host stable stripes. We use the doping and magnetic field dependence of field-symmetric Nernst effect features to delineate the phenomenology of these phases. Our measurements are consistent with prior reports of time-reversal symmetry breaking signatures above the superconducting $T_{\rm c}$, and crucially detect a sharp, robust, field-invariant peak at the stripe charge order temperature, $T_{\rm {\scriptscriptstyle CO}}$. Our observ…
We discuss how Raman spectra of high temperature superconducting cuprates are affected by nearly-critical spin and charge collective modes, which are coupled to charge carriers near a stripe quantum critical point. We find that specific fingerprints of nearly-critical collective modes can be observed and that the selectivity of Raman spectroscopy in momentum space may be exploited to distinguish the spin and charge contribution. We apply our results to discuss the spectra of high-T_c superconducting cuprates finding that the collective modes should have masses with substantial temperature depe…
A number of spectacular experimental anomalies\cite{li-2007,fujita-2005} have recently been discovered in certain cuprates, notably {\LBCO} and {\LNSCO}, which exhibit unidirectional spin and charge order (known as ``stripe order''). We have recently proposed to interpret these observations as evidence for a novel ``striped superconducting'' state, in which the superconducting order parameter is modulated in space, such that its average is precisely zero. Here, we show that thermal melting of the striped superconducting state can lead to a number of unusual phases, of which the most novel is a…
Recently Lucarelli {\it et al.} have reported\cite{lucarelli} temperature-dependence of the in-plane optical reflectivity of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ over a wide doping range, focusing on the infrared peaks at 30 cm$^{-1}$ (for $x$=0.12), 250 cm$^{-1}$ and 510 cm$^{-1}$. They interpreted the first peak (30 cm$^{-1}$) as a signature of charge stripe ordering, while the latter two (250 cm$^{-1}$ and 510 cm$^{-1}$) are attributed to the polaronic charge excitations. However, careful readers would notice that the reported spectra are largely different from those so far measured on the same system. …
When the constituent spins have an energetic preference to lie along an easy-axis, triangular and Kagome lattice antiferromagnets often develop long-range order that distinguishes the three sublattices of the underlying triangular Bravais lattice. In zero magnetic field, this three-sublattice order melts {\em either} in a two-step manner, {\em i.e.} via an intermediate phase with power-law three-sublattice order controlled by a temperature dependent exponent $η(T) \in (\frac{1}{9},\frac{1}{4})$, {\em or} via a transition in the three-state Potts universality class. Here, I predict that the uni…

We study the electronic structure within a system of phase-decoupled one-dimensional superconductors coexisting with stripe spin and charge density wave order. This system has a nodal Fermi surface (Fermi arc) in the form of a hole pocket and an antinodal pseudogap. The spectral function in the antinodes is approximately particle-hole symmetric contrary to the gapped regions just outside the pocket. We find that states at the Fermi energy are extended whereas states near the pseudogap energy have localization lengths as short as the inter-stripe spacing. We consider pairing which has either lo…
We study here the onset of charge density wave instabilities in quantum Hall systems at finite temperature for Landau level filling $ν>4$. Specific emphasis is placed on the role of disorder as well as an in-plane magnetic field. Beyond some critical value, disorder is observed to suppress the charge density wave melting temperature to zero. In addition, we find that a transition from perpendicular to parallel stripes (relative to the in-plane magnetic field) exists when the electron gas thickness exceeds $\approx 60$Å. The perpendicular alignment of the stripes is in agreement with the experi…
A sufficiently large perpendicular magnetic field quenches the kinetic (Fermi) energy of an interacting two-dimensional (2D) system of fermions, making them susceptible to the formation of a Wigner solid (WS) phase in which the charged carriers organize themselves in a periodic array in order to minimize their Coulomb repulsion energy. In low-disorder 2D electron systems confined to modulation-doped GaAs heterostructures, signatures of a magnetic-field-induced WS appear at low temperatures and very small Landau level filling factors ($ν\simeq1/5$). In dilute GaAs 2D \textit{hole} systems, on t…

To elucidate different photoinduced melting dynamics of charge orders observed in quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors $ θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$RbZn(SCN)$_4$ and $ α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ [BEDT-TTF=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene], we theoretically study photoinduced time evolution of charge and spin correlation functions on the basis of exact many-electron wave functions coupled with classical phonons in extended Peierls-Hubbard models on anisotropic triangular lattices. In both salts, the so-called horizontal-stripe charge order is stabilized by nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions and…
The layered chalcogenide Ta$_{2}$NiSe$_{5}$ has been proposed to host an excitonic condensate in its ground state, a phase that could offer a unique platform to study and manipulate many-body states at room temperature. However, identifying the dominant microscopic contribution to the observed spontaneous symmetry breaking remains challenging, perpetuating the debate over the ground state properties. Here, using broadband ultrafast spectroscopy we investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of Ta$_{2}$NiSe$_{5}$ and demonstrate that the transient reflectivity in the near-infrared range is conn…
New dielectric transitions are observed at common temperatures 32K and 245K, in isostructural $La_{2}CuO_{4+x}$ and $La_{5/3}Sr_{1/3}NiO_{4},$ that are signatures of local lattice (octahedral) instabilities. The present dielectric transitions reveal new aspects of the phase diagram of the perovskite cuprates and nickelates. They suggest that competition and coexistence of superconductivity with dielectricity occurs that is analogous to that between superconductivity and anti-ferromagnetism. These results also indicate that inhomogeneous electronic states, such as charge stripes and oxygen orde…
Charge carriers in low-doped semiconductors may distort the atomic lattice and trap themselves forming so-called small polarons. High carrier concentrations can lead to short range ordered polarons (large polarons) and even to long range charge and orbital order. Both systems should be insulating with a large electrical resistivity, which decreases with increasing temperature. However, photoemission measurements recently found a polaronic pseudogap, in a metallic phase of La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7. This layered manganite is famous for colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) associated with a phase transition…
Recent studies of the high-Tc superconductor La_(1.6-x)Nd_(0.4)Sr_(x)CuO_(4) (Nd-LSCO) have found a linear-T in-plane resistivity rho_(ab) and a logarithmic temperature dependence of the thermopower S / T at a hole doping p = 0.24, and a Fermi-surface reconstruction just below p = 0.24 [1, 2]. These are typical signatures of a quantum critical point (QCP). Here we report data on the c-axis resistivity rho_(c)(T) of Nd-LSCO measured as a function of temperature near this QCP, in a magnetic field large enough to entirely suppress superconductivity. Like rho_(ab), rho_(c) shows an upturn at low t…
In this paper we introduce an exactly solvable Kondo lattice model without any fine-tuning local gauge symmetry. This model describes itinerant electrons interplaying with a localized magnetic moment via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Its solvability results from conservation of the localized moment at each site, and is valid for arbitrary lattice geometry and electron filling. A case study on square lattice shows that the ground state is a Néel antiferromagnetic insulator at half-filling. At finite temperature, paramagnetic phases including a Mott insulator and correlated metal are found. …

Electronic nematicity is rarely observed as an isolated instability of a correlated electron system. Instead, in iron pnictides and in certain cuprates and heavy-fermion materials, nematicity is intertwined with an underlying spin-stripe or charge-stripe state. As a result, random strain, ubiquitous in any real crystal, creates both random-field disorder for the nematic degrees of freedom and random-bond disorder for the spin or charge ones. Here, we put forward an Ashkin-Teller model with random Baxter fields to capture the dual role of random strain in nematic systems for which nematicity is…
