Even as the understanding of the mechanism behind correlated insulating states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene converges towards various kinds of spontaneous symmetry breaking, the metallic "normal state" above the insulating transition temperature remains mysterious, with its excessively high entropy and linear-in-temperature resistivity. In this work, we focus on the effects of fluctuations of the order-parameters describing correlated insulating states at integer fillings of the low-energy flat bands on charge transport. Motivated by the observation of heterogeneity in the order-parameter landscape at zero magnetic field in certain samples, we conjecture the existence of frustrating extended range interactions in an effective Ising model of the order-parameters on a triangular lattice. The competition between short-distance ferromagnetic interactions and frustrating extended range antiferromagnetic interactions leads to an emergent length scale that forms stripe-like mesoscale domains above the ordering transition. The gapless fluctuations of these heterogeneous configurations are found to be responsible for the linear-in-temperature resistivity as well as the enhanced low temperature entropy. Our insights link experimentally observed linear-in-temperature resistivity and enhanced entropy to the strength of frustration, or equivalently, to the emergence of mesoscopic length scales characterizing order-parameter domains.
The stability and melting transition of a single layer and a bilayer crystal consisting of charged particles interacting through a Coulomb or a screened Coulomb potential is studied using the Monte-Carlo technique. A new melting criterion is formulated which we show to be universal for bilayer as well as for single layer crystals in the case of (screened) Coulomb, Lennard--Jones and 1/r^{12} repulsive inter-particle interactions. The melting temperature for the five different lattice structures of the bilayer Wigner crystal is obtained, and a phase diagram is constructed as a function of the i…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with interlayer twist angles near the magic angle $\approx 1.08^{\circ}$ hosts flat bands and exhibits correlated states including Mott-like insulators, superconductivity and magnetism. Here we report combined temperature-dependent transport measurements of the longitudinal and Hall resistivities in close to magic-angle TBG. While the observed longitudinal resistivity follows linear temperature $T$ dependence consistent with previous reports, the Hall resistance shows an anomalous $T$ dependence with the cotangent of the Hall angle cot $Θ{_H} \propto T^2$. Boltzm…
The flat bands of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) host strongly-correlated electronic phases such as correlated insulators, superconductors and a strange-metal state. The latter state, believed to be key for understanding the electronic properties of MATBG, is obscured by various phase transitions and thus could not be unequivocally differentiated from a metal undergoing frequent electron-phonon collisions. Here, we report transport measurements in superconducting MATBG in which the correlated insulator states are suppressed by screening. The uninterrupted metallic ground state sh…
Recent experiments on magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene have discovered correlated insulating behavior and superconductivity at a fractional filling of an isolated narrow band. In this paper we show that magic-angle bilayer graphene exhibits another hallmark of strongly correlated systems --- a broad regime of $T-$linear resistivity above a small, density dependent, crossover temperature--- for a range of fillings near the correlated insulator. We also extract a transport "scattering rate", which satisfies a near Planckian form that is universally related to the ratio of $(k_BT/\hbar)$. Our…
We present a comprehensive dynamical mean field study of the triangular lattice moiré Hubbard model, which is believed to represent the physics of moiré bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides. In these materials, important aspects of the band structure including the bandwidth and the order and location of van Hove singularities can be tuned by varying the interlayer potential. We present a magnetic and metal-insulator phase diagram and a detailed study of the dependence of the resistivity on temperature, band filling and interlayer potential. We find that transport displays Fermi liquid, str…

The bilayer perovskite Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ has been widely studied as a canonical strange metal. It exhibits $T$-linear resistivity and a $T\log(1/T)$ electronic specific heat in a field-tuned quantum critical fan. Criticality is known to occur in `hot' Fermi pockets with a high density of states close to the Fermi energy. We show that while these hot pockets occupy a small fraction of the Brillouin zone, they are responsible for the anomalous transport and thermodynamics of the material. Specifically, a scattering process in which two electrons from the large, `cold' Fermi surfaces scatter into…
Temperature-linear resistance at low temperatures in strange metals is an exotic characteristic of strong correlation systems, as observed in high-TC superconducting cuprates, heavy fermions, Fe-based superconductors, ruthenates, and twisted bilayer graphene. Here, we introduce a hole-doped valley-spin insulator, V-doped WSe2, with hole pockets in the valence band. The strange metal characteristic was observed in VxW1-xSe2 at a critical carrier concentration of 9.5 x 10^20 cm-3 from 150 K to 1.8 K. The unsaturated magnetoresistance is almost linearly proportional to the magnetic field. Using t…
We present a theory of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene in which attraction is generated between electrons on the same honeycomb sublattice when the system is close to a sublattice polarization instability. The resulting Cooper pairs are spin-polarized valley-singlets. Because the sublattice polarizability is mainly contributed by interband fluctuations, superconductivity occurs over a wide range of filling fraction. It is suppressed by i) applying a sublattice polarizing field (generated by an aligned BN substrate) or ii) changing moiré band filling to favor valley polarization. …
Strange metal behavior is ubiquitous to correlated materials ranging from cuprate superconductors to bilayer graphene. There is increasing recognition that it arises from physics beyond the quantum fluctuations of a Landau order parameter which, in quantum critical heavy fermion antiferromagnets, may be realized as critical Kondo entanglement of spin and charge. The dynamics of the associated electronic delocalization transition could be ideally probed by optical conductivity, but experiments in the corresponding frequency and temperature ranges have remained elusive. We present terahertz time…
An extended Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice with two orbitals per site at charge neutrality is investigated with unbiased large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The Fermi velocity of the Dirac fermions is renormalized as the cluster charge interaction increases, until a mass term emerges and a quantum phase transition from Dirac semi-metal to valence bond solid (VBS) insulator is established. The quantum critical point is discovered to belong to 3D $N=4$ Gross-Neveu chiral XY universality with the critical exponents obtained at high precision. Further enhancement of the interaction …
We explore in detail the electronic phases of a system consisting of three non-colinear arrays of coupled quantum wires, each rotated 120 degrees with respect to the next. A perturbative renormalization-group analysis reveals that multiple correlated states can be stabilized: a $s$-wave or $d \pm id$ superconductor, a charge density wave insulator, a two-dimensional Fermi liquid, and a 2D Luttinger liquid (also known as smectic metal or sliding Luttinger liquid). The model provides an effective description of electronic interactions in small-angle twisted bilayer graphene and we discuss its im…
A Wigner crystal, a regular electron lattice arising from strong correlation effects, is one of the earliest predicted collective electronic states. This many-body state exhibits quantum and classical phase transitions and has been proposed as a basis for quantum information processing applications. In semiconductor platforms, two-dimensional Wigner crystals have been observed under magnetic field or moiré-based lattice potential where the electron kinetic energy is strongly suppressed. Here, we report bilayer Wigner crystal formation without a magnetic or confinement field in atomically thin …
`Strange metals' with resistivity depending linearly on temperature $T$ down to low-$T$ have been a long-standing puzzle in condensed matter physics. Here, we consider a model of itinerant spin-$1/2$ fermions interacting via on-site Hubbard interaction and random infinite-ranged spin-spin interaction. We show that the quantum critical point associated with the melting of the spin-glass phase by charge fluctuations displays non-Fermi liquid behaviour, with local spin dynamics identical to that of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev family of models. This extends the quantum spin liquid dynamics previously es…

Understanding orbital ordered (OO) Mott insulating states lies at the heart of a consistent resolution of the colossal magneto-resistance (CMR) observed in manganites, where its melting induces a low-$T$ insulator-metal transition for $0.25 \le x\le 0.45$. Motivated thereby, we study the OO states in a planar model for bilayer manganites using DMFT and finite-size diagonalisation methods. We derive the correct OO ground states observed in manganites for $x=0,{1/2},{2/3},{3/4}$ in exact agreement with observations, including the charge-orbital-magnetic ordered stripe phases for $x>{1/2}$. These…
