While defects such as oxygen vacancies in correlated materials can modify their electronic properties dramatically, understanding the microscopic origin of electronic correlations in materials with defects has been elusive. Lanthanum nickelate with oxygen vacancies, LaNiO$_{3-x}$, exhibits the metal-to-insulator transition as the oxygen vacancy level $x$ increases from the stoichiometric LaNiO$_3$. In particular, LaNiO$_{2.5}$ exhibits a paramagnetic insulating phase, also stabilizing an antiferromagnetic state below $T_N\simeq152$K. Here, we study the electronic structure and energetics of LaNiO$_{3-x}$ using first-principles. We find that LaNiO$_{2.5}$ stabilizes a vacancy-ordered structure with an insulating ground state and the nature of the insulating phase is a "site-selective" paramagnetic Mott state as obtained using density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). The Ni octahedron site develops a Mott insulating state with strong correlations as the Ni $e_g$ orbital is half-filled while the Ni square-planar site with apical oxygen vacancies becomes a band insulator. Our oxygen vacancy results can not be explained by the pure change of the Ni oxidation state alone within the rigid band shift approximation. Our DFT+DMFT density of states explains that the peak splitting of unoccupied states in LaNiO$_{3-x}$ measured by the experimental X-ray absorption spectra originates from two nonequivalent Ni ions in the vacancy-ordered structure.
We have synthesized A-site ordered (AO)- and A-site disordered (AD)-Y1/4Sr3/4CoO3-delta (YSCO) with various oxygen deficiency delta, and have made a comparative study of the structural and physical properties. We have found that A-site (Y/Sr) ordering produces the unconventional oxygen-vacancy ordered (OO) structure, and that the magnetic and transport properties of both AO- and AD-YSCO strongly depend on the oxygen-vacancy (or excess oxygen) ordering pattern. AO-YSCO with a stoichiometric delta of 0.5 has the unconventional OO structure reflecting Y/Sr ordering pattern. With decreasing delta …
Oxygen vacancies are a common source of excess electrons in complex oxides. In Mott insulators these additional electrons can induce a metal-insulator transition (MIT), fundamentally altering the electronic properties of the system. Here we study the effect of oxygen vacancies in LaTiO3, a prototypical Mott insulator close to the MIT. We show that the introduction of oxygen vacancies creates a vacancy-related band immediately below the partially filled Ti-t2g bands. We study the effect of this additional band on the Mott MIT using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-f…
The idea of magnetic monopoles in spin ice has enjoyed much success at intermediate temperatures, but at low temperatures a description in terms of monopole dynamics alone is insufficient. Recently, numerical simulations were used to argue that magnetic impurities account for this discrepancy by introducing a magnetic equivalent of residual resistance in the system. Here we propose that oxygen deficiency is the leading cause of magnetic impurities in as-grown samples, and we determine the defect structure and magnetism in Y2Ti2O(7-δ) using diffuse neutron scattering and magnetization measureme…
Oxygen vacancy is intrinsically coupled with magnetic, electronic and transport properties of transition-metal oxide materials and directly determines their multifunctionality. Here, we demonstrate reversible control of oxygen content by post-annealing at temperature lower than 300 degree centigrade and realize the reversible metal-insulator transition in epitaxial NdNiO3 films. Importantly, over six orders of magnitude in the resistance modulation and a large change in optical band gap are demonstrated at room temperature without destroying the parent framework and changing the p-type conduct…
We study the effect of oxygen vacancies on the electronic structure of the model strongly correlated metal SrVO$_3$. By means of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) synchrotron experiments, we investigate the systematic effect of the UV dose on the measured spectra. We observe the onset of a spurious dose-dependent prominent peak at an energy range were the lower Hubbard band has been previously reported in this compound, raising questions on its previous interpretation. By a careful analysis of the dose dependent effects we succeed in disentangling the contributions coming from the oxygen va…
We address the long-standing question of the nature of oxygen vacancies in strontium titanate, using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) to investigate in particular the effect of vacancy-site correlations on the electronic properties. Our approach uses a minimal low-energy electronic subspace including the Ti-$t_{2g}$ orbitals plus an additional vacancy-centered Wannier function, and provides an intuitive and physically transparent framework to study the effect of the local electron-electron interactions on the excess charge introduced by the …
Disorder, primarily in the form of oxygen vacancies, cation stoichiometry and atomic inter-diffusion, appear to play vital roles in the electronic and transport properties of the metallic electron liquid at the oxide hetero-interfaces. Antisite disorder is also understood to be a key player in this context. In order to delineate the roles of two of these key factors, oxygen vacancy and antisite disorder, we have investigated the effect of oxygen vacancy on the antisite disorder at a number of interfaces separating two La-based transition metal oxides using density functional theory. Oxygen vac…
Herein, we report the magneto-transport and exchange bias effect in a "314 - type" oxygen - vacancy ordered material with composition SrCo$_{0.85}$Fe$_{0.15}$O$_{2.62}$. This material exhibits a ferrimagnetic transition above room temperature, at 315 K. The negative magnetoresistance starts to appear from room temperature (-1.3 $\%$ at 295 K in 70 kOe) and reaches a sizable value of 58 $\%$ at 4 K in 70 kOe. Large exchange bias effect is observed below 315 K when the sample is cooled in the presence of a magnetic field. The coexistence of nearly compensated and ferrimagnetic regions in the lay…
While ultra-thin layers of the LaNiO$_3$ film exhibit a remarkable metal-insulator transition as the film thickness becomes smaller than a few unit cell (u.c.), the formation of oxygen vacancies and their effects on the correlated electronic structure have been rarely studied. Here, we investigate the effects of the surface termination and the oxygen vacancy position on the electronic properties and vacancy energetics of LaNiO$_3$ ultra-thin films using density functional theory plus U (DFT+U). We find that oxygen vacancies can be easily formed in the Ni layers with the NiO$_2$ terminated surf…
We report the structural, magnetic, exchange bias and magnetotransport effect in Sr$_{4}$Fe$_{3}$CoO$_{11}$. The material crystallizes in the orthorhombic $\textit{Cmmm}$ space group. It shows antiferromagnetic (G-type) transition (T$_{N}$ = 255 K) along with interesting temperature induced magnetization reversal (T$_{Comp.}$= 47 K measured at 100 Oe). The magnetic reversal can be elucidated considering the increased magnetocrystalline anisotropy with Co substitution. Magnetoresistance measurements shows an interesting crossover from negative to positive side at $\sim$ 100 K. The negative magn…
In this paper, I demonstrate a density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory study on the electronic properties of doped $TiO_2$ rutile as well as another tetragonal phase anatase with oxygen vacancy. The density of states and optical properties have been obtained from the electronic structure applying screened hybrid exchange correlation density functionals. All the single-particle excitations are treated within the dynamical mean field theory for independent quasiparticles. For optical properties, excitations are considered by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation for Coulomb corr…
We demonstrate the microscopic role of oxygen vacancies spatially confined within nanometer inter-spacing (about 1 nm) in BiFeO3, using resonant soft X-ray scattering techniques and soft X-ray spectroscopy measurements. Such vacancy confinements and total number of vacancy are controlled by substitution of Ca2+ for Bi3+ cation. We found that by increasing the substitution, the in-plane orbital bands of Fe3+ cations are reconstructed without any redox reaction. It leads to a reduction of the hopping between Fe atoms, forming a localized valence band, in particular Fe 3d-electronic structure, ar…
Epitaxial thin films of hexagonal ErMnO3 fabricated on Pt(111)/Al2O3(0001) and YSZ(111) substrates exhibited both ferroelectric character and magnetic ordering at low temperatures. As the temperature was reduced, the ErMnO3 films first showed antiferromagnetism. At lower temperatures, the films deposited at lower oxygen partial pressures exhibited spin glass behavior. This re-entrant spin glass behavior was attributed to competition between an antiferromagnetic interaction in the hexagonal geometry and a ferromagnetic interaction caused by a change in Mn valence induced by excess electrons fro…
Correlated band theory is employed to investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of different arrangements of oxygen di- and tri-vacancy clusters in SrTiO$_3$. Hole and electron doping of oxygen deficient SrTiO$_3$ yields various degrees of magnetization as a result of the interaction between localized magnetic moments at the defected sites. Different kinds of Ti atomic orbital hybridization are described as a function of the doping level and defect geometry. We find that magnetism in SrTiO$_{3-δ}$ is sensitive to the arrangement of neighbouring vacancy sites, charge carrier density, a…
Oxygen vacancies are an important type of defect in transition metal oxides. In SrTiO$_3$ they are believed to be the main donors in an otherwise intrinsic crystal. At the same time, a relatively deep gap state associated with the vacancy is widely reported. To explain this inconsistency we investigate the effect of electron correlation in an oxygen vacancy (OV) in SrTiO$_3$. When taking correlation into account, we find that the OV-induced localized level can at most trap one electron, while the second electron occupies the conduction band. Our results offer a natural explanation of how the O…
Insulator-to-metal transition in Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ has drawn keen attention because of its sensitivity to various stimulation and its potential controllability. Here, we report a direct observation of Fermi surface, which emerges upon introducing excess oxygen into an insulating Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Comparison between energy distribution curves shows that the Mott insulating gap is closed by eV-scale spectral-weight transfer with excess oxygen. Momentum-space mapping exhibits two square-shaped sheets of the Fermi surface. One is a hole-like $α$…
Oxygen-deficient TiO$_2$ in the rutile structure as well as the Ti$_3$O$_5$ Magn{é}li phase is investigated within the charge self-consistent combination of density functional theory (DFT) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). It is shown that an isolated oxygen vacancy (V$_{\rm O}$) in titanium dioxide is not sufficient to metallize the system at low temperatures. In a semiconducting phase, an in-gap state is identified at $\varepsilon_{\rm IG}^{\hfill}\sim -0.75\,$eV\, in excellent agreement with experimental data. Band-like impurity levels, resulting from a threefold V$_{\rm O}$-Ti coord…
We have investigated the room temperature ferromagnetic order that develops in Al-substituted magnesium oxide, Mg(Al)O, nanoparticles with Al fractions of up to 5 at.%. All samples, including undoped MgO nanoparticles, exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism, with the saturation magnetization reaching a maximum of 0.023 emu/g at 2 at.% of Al. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identifies the presence of oxygen vacancies in both doped and undoped MgO nanoparticles, with the vacancy concentration increasing upon vacuum annealing of Mg(Al)O, resulting in two-fold enhancement of the saturation magne…
Oxygen vacancies in strontium titanate surfaces (SrTiO3) have been linked to the presence of a two-dimensional electron gas with unique behavior. We perform a detailed density functional theory study of the lattice and electronic structure of SrTiO3 slabs with multiple oxygen vacancies, with a main focus on two vacancies near a titanium dioxide terminated SrTiO3 surface. We conclude based on total energies that the two vacancies preferably inhabit the first two layers, i.e. they cluster vertically, while in the direction parallel to the surface, the vacancies show a weak tendency towards equal…
Unknown changes in the crystalline order of regular TiO$_2$ result in the formation of black titania, which has garnered significant interest as a photocatalytic material due to the accompanying electronic changes. Herein, we determine the nature of the lattice distortion caused by an oxygen vacancy that in turn results in the formation of mid-band gap states found in previous studies of black titania. We introduce an innovative technique using a state-of-the-art silicon drift detector, which can be used in conjunction with extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) to measure bulk inter…
The high temperature ferromagnetism in Sr3YCo4O10+delta perovskite, whose origin has been the subject of a considerable debate, has been studied by neutron powder diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements. Oxygen vacancy ordering creates a complex pattern of zigzag stripes in the oxygen-deficient CoO4+delta layers, where the Co ions are found in three distinct coordinations. The symmetry of this unprecedented structural modulation, in conjunction with the existence of different Co spin states, provide a straightforward explanation for the appearance of ferrimagnetism. A model …
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of defect levels in semiconductors based on approximate functionals are subject to considerable uncertainties, in particular due to inaccurate band gap energies. Testing previous correction methods by many-body GW calculations for the O vacancy in ZnO, we find that: (i) The GW quasi-particle shifts of the VO defect states increase the spitting between occupied and unoccupied states due to self-interaction correction, and do not reflect the conduction versus valence band character. (ii) The GW quasi-particle energies of charged defect states require …
We propose a model with few parameters, for vacancy-induced ferromagnetism based on a correlated model for anions (oxygen orbitals) with random potentials that represent cation vacancies. There is a range of potential strength for which moments appear on oxygen sites neighboring the vacancies. By using techniques which allow us to treat the randomness exactly, we calculate the magnetic couplings between the total moment around each vacancy, the Curie temperature and dynamical correlations as a function of the effective stren gth of the vacancy potential and doping properties, the density of va…
We present the first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ ($δ=0, 0.25, 0.5$) to understand the multivalent nature of Co ions in SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ along the line of topotactic transition between perovskite SrCoO$_{3}$ and brownmillerite SrCoO$_{2.5}$. From the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$-dependent ground state of stoichiometric SrCoO$_{3}$, we show the proximity of its metallic ferromagnetic ground state to other antiferromagnetic states. The structural and magnetic properties of SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ depending on their oxygen-content provide …
In this work, using the state-of-the-art first principles calculations based on density functional theory, we found that the concentration as well as coordination of surface oxygen vacancies with respect to each other were critical for direct water-splitting reaction on the (001) surfaces of PbTiO$_3$ and TiO$_2$. For the water-splitting reaction to happen on TiO$_2$-terminated surfaces, it is necessary to have two neighboring O-vacancies acting as active sites that host two adsorbing water molecules. However, eventual dissociation of O-H bonds is possible only in the presence of an additional…
We use density functional theory to calculate the structure, band-gap and magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient SrTi$_{1-x-y}$Fe$_x$Co$_y$O$_{3-δ}$ with x = y = 0.125 and $δ$ = (0,0.125,0.25). The valence and the high or low spin-states of the Co and Fe ions, as well as the lattice distortion and the band-gap, depend on the oxygen deficiency, the locations of the vacancies, and on the direction of the Fe-Co axis. A charge redistribution that resembles a self-regulatory response lies behind the valence spin-state changes. Ferromagnetism dominates, and both the magnetization and the band gap a…
Defect engineering has brought about a unique level of control for Si-based semiconductors, leading to the optimization of various opto-electronic properties and devices. With regard to perovskite transition metal oxides, oxygen vacancies have been a key ingredient in defect engineering, as they play a central role in determining the crystal field and consequent electronic structure, leading to important electronic and magnetic phase transitions. Therefore, experimental approaches toward understanding the role of defects in complex oxides have been largely limited to controlling oxygen vacanci…
We have investigated the role of transition metal impurities and oxygen vacancies in the formation of ferromagnetism in Co-doped TiO2 using LSDA+U approach which takes into account strong on-cite Coulomb correlations for electronic structure calculations. Several model systems such as supercells of rutile TiO2 with Co{+2} ion in high-spin state substituted into titanium cite and with oxygen vacancies were considered. We found that exchange interaction of Co magnetic ions is ferromagnetic, but very weak due to the large average impurity-impurity distance. However, its strength becomes three tim…
We report very large bandgap enhancement in SrTiO3 (STO) films (fabricated by pulsed laser deposition below 800 °C), which can be up to 20% greater than the bulk value, depending on the deposition temperature. The origin is comprehensively investigated and finally attributed to Sr/Ti antisite point defects, supported by density functional theory calculations. More importantly, the bandgap enhancement can be utilized to tailor the electronic and magnetic phases of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in STO-based interface systems. For example, the oxygen-vacancy-induced 2DEG (2DEG-V) at the…
We consider an interaction-driven scenario for the two-dimensional metal-insulator transition in zero magnetic field (2D-MIT), based on melting the Wigner crystal through vacancy-interstitial pair formation. We show that the transition from the Wigner-Mott insulator to a heavy Fermi liquid emerges as an instability to self-doping, resembling conceptually the solid to normal liquid transition in He3. The resulting physical picture naturally explains many puzzling features of the 2D-MIT.
Strong electron correlations have long been recognized as driving the emergence of novel phases of matter. A well recognized example is high-temperature superconductivity which cannot be understood in terms of the standard weak-coupling theory. The exotic properties that accompany the formation of the two-channel Kondo effect including the emergence of an unconventional metallic state in the low-energy limit also originate from strong electron interactions. Despite its paradigmatic role for the formation of non-standard metal behavior, the stringent conditions required for its emergence have m…
Using an effective one-band Hubbard model with disorder, we consider magnetic states of the correlated oxide interfaces, where effective hole self-doping and a magnetially ordered state emerge due to electronic and ionic reconstructions. By employing the coherent potential approximation, we analyze the effect of random oxygen vacancies on the two-dimensional magnetism. We find that the random vacancies enhance the ferromagnetically ordered state and stabilize a robust magnetization above a critical vacancy concentration of about c=0.1. In the strong-correlated regime, we also obtain a nonmonot…
We show that oxygen vacancies at titanate interfaces induce a complex multiorbital reconstruction which involves a lowering of the local symmetry and an inversion of t2g and eg orbitals resulting in the occupation of the eg orbitals of Ti atoms neighboring the O vacancy. The orbital reconstruction depends strongly on the clustering of O vacancies and can be accompanied by a magnetic splitting between the local eg orbitals with lobes directed towards the vacancy and interface dxy orbitals. The reconstruction generates a two-dimensional interface magnetic state not observed in bulk SrTiO3. Using…
