One of the key issues in the physics of topological insulators is whether the topologically non-trivial properties survive at finite temperatures and, if so, whether they disappear only at the temperature of topological gap closing. Here, we study this problem, using quantum fidelity as a measure, by means of \emph{ab-initio} methods supplemented by an effective dissipative theory built on the top of the \emph{ab-initio} electron and phonon band structures. In the case of SnTe, the prototypical crystal topological insulator, we reveal the presence of a characteristic temperature, much lower than the gap-closing one, that marks a loss of coherence of the topological state. The transition is not present in a purely electronic system but it appears once we invoke coupling with a dissipative bosonic bath. Features in the dependence with temperature of the fidelity susceptibility can be related to changes in the band curvature, but signatures of a topological phase transition appear in the fidelity only though the non-adiabatic coupling with soft phonons. Our argument is valid for valley topological insulators, but in principle can be generalized to the broader class of topological insulators which host any symmetry-breaking boson.
We present a study of the soft transverse optic phonon mode in SnTe in comparison to the corresponding mode in PbTe using inelastic neutron scattering and ab-initio lattice dynamical calculations. In contrast to previous reports our calculations predict that the soft mode in SnTe features a strongly asymmetric spectral weight distribution qualitatively similar to that found in PbTe. Experimentally, we find that the overall width in energy of the phonon peaks is comparable in our neutron scattering spectra for SnTe and PbTe. We observe the well-known double-peak-like signature of the TO mode in…
As machine learning becomes increasingly important in engineering and science, it is inevitable that machine learning techniques will be applied to the investigation of materials, and in particular the structural phase transitions common in ferroelectric materials. Here, we build and train an artificial neural network to accurately predict the energy change associated with atom displacements and use the trained artificial neural network in Monte-Carlo simulations on ferroelectric materials to investigate their phase transitions. We apply this approach to two-dimensional monolayer SnTe and show…
Recent studies on different topological materials in condensed matter physics have provided the evidence of topological nature for bosonic particle like phonons by performing various theoretical calculations and experimental observations. Here, the topological behaviours of phonons of SnS, SnSe and SnTe materials in rock-salt structure are investigated using $ab$-$initio$ methodology. For all these materials, the tilted linear band touching is observed along with the presence of band inversion in direction X-W. The topological point in phonon dispersion curve along X-W direction is found to be…
Discovery of topologically protected surface states, believed to be immune to weak disorder and thermal effects, opened up a new avenue to reveal exotic fundamental science and advanced technology. While time-reversal symmetry plays the key role in most such materials, the bulk crystalline symmetries such as mirror symmetry preserve the topological properties of topological crystalline insulators (TCIs). It is apparent that any structural change may alter the topological properties of TCIs. To investigate this relatively unexplored landscape, we study the temperature evolution of the Dirac fer…
$\text{N}_{2}\text{V}$ defect in diamond is characterized by means of \emph{ab initio} methods relying on density functional theory calculated parameters of a Hubbard model Hamiltonian. It is shown that this approach appropriately describes the energy levels of correlated excited states induced by this defect. By determining its critical magneto-optical parameters, we propose to realize a long-living quantum memory by $\text{N}_{2}\text{V}$ defect in diamond.
We determine and analyze the charge and spin density distributions of nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) center in diamond for both the ground and excited states by \emph{ab initio} supercell calculations. We show that the hyperfine tensor of $^{15}$N nuclear spin is negative and strongly anisotropic in the excited state, in contrast to previous models used extensively to explain electron spin resonance measurements. In addition, we detect a significant redistribution of the spin density due to excitation that has serious implications for the quantum register applications of N-V center.
Calculated energy levels from recent \emph{ab initio} studies of the electronic structure of SrCl$_{2}$:Yb$^{2+}$ and CsCaBr$_{3}$:Yb$^{2+}$ are fitted with a semi-empirical "crystal-field" Hamiltonian, which acts within the model space $4f^{14} + 4f^{13}5d + 4f^{13}6s$. Parameters are obtained for the minima of the potential-energy curves for each energy level and also for a range of anion-cation separations. The parameters are compared with published results parameters fitted to experimental data and to atomic calculations. The states with significant $4f^{13}6s$ character give a good approx…
Point defects in solids may realize solid state quantum bits. The spin-orbit coupling in these point defects plays a key role in the magneto-optical properties that determine the conditions of quantum bit operation. However, experimental data and methods do not directly yield this highly important data, particularly, for such complex systems where dynamic Jahn-Teller (DJT) effect damps the spin-orbit interaction. Here, we show for an exemplary quantum bit, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, that \emph{ab initio} supercell density functional theory provide quantitative prediction for the …
Cubic silicon carbide is an excellent platform for integration of defect qubits into established wafer scale device architectures for quantum information and sensing applications, where divacancy qubit, that is similar to the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, has favorable coherence properties. We demonstrate by means of density functional theory calculations that divacancy in 3C SiC has superior spin-stress coupling parameters and stress sensitivity for nanoscale, quantum enhanced photonic, optoelectronic and optomechanical devices.
The split silicon-vacancy defect (SiV) in diamond is an electrically and optically active color center. Recently, it has been shown that this color center is bright and can be detected at the single defect level. In addition, the SiV defect shows a non-zero electronic spin ground state that potentially makes this defect an alternative candidate for quantum optics and metrology applications beside the well-known nitrogen-vacancy color center in diamond. However, the electronic structure of the defect, the nature of optical excitations and other related properties are not well-understood. Here w…
Time-dependent density functional theory is implemented in an all electron solid-state code for the case of fully non-collinear spins. We use this to study laser induced demagnetization in Fe, Co and Ni. It is shown that this demagnetization is a two-step process: excitation of a fraction of electrons followed by spin-flip transitions of the remaining localized electrons. These results successfully explain several experimental features such as the time-lag between the start of the pulse and demagnetization and spin-flip excitations dominating the physics. We further show that it is possible to…
Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) are essential to many technologies. These materials are doped (\emph{n}- or \emph{p}-type) oxides with a large enough band gap (ideally $>$3~eV) to ensure transparency. However, the high carrier concentration present in TCOs lead additionally to the possibility for optical transitions from the occupied conduction bands to higher states for \emph{n}-type materials and from lower states to the unoccupied valence bands for \emph{p}-type TCOs. The "second gap" formed by these transitions might limit transparency and a large second gap has been sometimes propose…
Group-IV -- Vacancy color centers in diamond are fast emerging qubits that can be harnessed in quantum communication and sensor applications. There is an immediate quest for understanding their magneto-optical properties, in order to select the appropriate qubits for varying needs of particular quantum applications. Here we present results from cutting edge \emph{ab initio} calculations about the charge state stability, zero-phonon-line energies, spin-orbit and electron-phonon couplings for Group-IV -- Vacancy color centers. Based on the analysis of our results, we develop a novel spin Hamilto…
There is a continuous search for solid-state spin qubits operating at room temperature with excitation in the IR communication bandwidth. Recently we have introduced the photoelectric detection of magnetic resonance (PDMR) to read the electron spin state of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, a technique which is promising for applications in quantum information technology. By measuring photoionization spectra on a diamond crystal we found two ionization thresholds that were not reported before. On the same sample we also observed absorption and photoluminescence signatures that were iden…
It is a long-time pursuit of computations with \emph{ab initio} precision of thermal contributions to phase behaviors of condensed matters under extreme conditions. In this work, the pressure induced structural phase transitions of crystalline aluminum up to $600$ GPa at room temperature are investigated based on the criterion of Gibbs free energy derived directly from the partition function that formulated in the ensemble theory with the interatomic interactions characterized by density functional theory computations. The transition pressures of the FCC$\rightarrow$HCP$\rightarrow$BCC phase t…
Designing new quantum materials with long-lived electron spin states urgently requires a general theoretical formalism and computational technique to reliably predict intrinsic spin relaxation times. We present a new, accurate and universal first-principles methodology based on Lindbladian dynamics of density matrices to calculate spin-phonon relaxation time ($τ_s$) of solids with arbitrary spin mixing and crystal symmetry. This method describes contributions of Elliott-Yafet (EY) and D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) mechanisms to spin relaxation for systems with and without inversion symmetry on an equa…
In topological crystalline insulators the topological conducting surface states are protected by crystal symmetry, in principle making it possible to pattern nanoscale insulating and conductive motifs solely by breaking local symmetries on an otherwise homogenous, single-phase material. We show using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy that defects that break local symmetry of SnTe suppress electron tunneling over an energy range as large as the bulk band gap, an order of magnitude larger than that produced globally via magnetic fields or uniform structural perturbations. Complementary …
In this work, we report the results of \emph{ab initio} calculations of thermochemical properties of several compounds in the Fe-Nd, B-Nd and B-Fe-Nd systems. We have performed DFT+U calculations to compute the enthalpy of formation of the compounds NdB$_6$, NdB$_4$, Nd$_2$B$_5$, Nd$_2$Fe$_{17}$ and Nd$_5$Fe$_2$B$_6$. It was found that the values obtained with an effective Hubbard $U$ correction have better agreement with the experimental data. We have also computed the vibrational contribution to the heat capacity ($C_p$) of the compounds as a function of temperature was computed using the qu…
Crystal structures of $\textrm{CLi}_4$ compounds are explored through \emph{ab} \emph{initio} evolutionary methodology. Phase transition from metal to semimetal and semiconductor, and eventually to insulator with increasing pressure are revealed under pressure. Pressure-induced evolution of anti-metallization has been described quantitatively by Fermi Surface Filling Ratio and electron energy band gap using \emph{ab} \emph{initio} \emph{GW} calculations. Anti-metallization is attributed to the hybrid valence electrons and their repulsion by core electrons into the lattice interstices. Very wea…
The electronic structure and absorption spectrum of hydrogenated silicon carbide nanocrystals (SiCNC) have been determined by first principles calculations. We show that the reconstructed surface can significantly change not just the onset of absorption, but the \emph{shape} of the spectrum at higher energies. We found that the absorption treshold of the reconstructed SiCNs cannot be accurately predicted from traditional density functional theory calculations.
Unlike time-reversal topological insulators, surface metallic states with Dirac cone dispersion in the recently discovered topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) are protected by crystal symmetry. To date, TCI behaviors have been observed in SnTe and the related alloys Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se/Te, which incorporate heavy elements with large spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, by combining first-principles and {\it ab initio} tight-binding calculations, we report the formation of a TCI in the relatively lighter rock-salt SnS and SnSe. This TCI is characterized by an even number of Dirac cones at th…
We use first principles molecular dynamics simulations coupled to the thermodynamic integration method to study the hcp-bcc transition and melting of beryllium up to a pressure of 1600~GPa. We derive the melting line by equating solid and liquid Gibbs free energies, and represent it by a Simon Glatzel fit $T_m= 1564~\text{K} (1 + P/(15.6032 ~\text{GPa}))^{0.383}$, which is in good agreement with previous two-phase simulations below 6000~K. We also derive the hcp-bcc solid-solid phase boundary and show the quasiharmonic approximation underestimates the stability of the hcp structure, predicting…
Fluorescent paramagnetic defects in solids have become attractive systems for quantum information processing in the recent years. One of the leading contenders is the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond with visible emission but alternative solution in technologically mature host is an immediate quest for many applications in this field. It has been recently found that various polytypes of silicon carbide (SiC), that are standard semiconductors with wafer scale technology, can host nitrogen-vacancy defect (NV) that could be an alternative qubit candidate with emission in the …
Correlation effects play an important role in the electronic structure of half-metallic (HM) magnets. In particular, they give rise to non-quasiparticle states above (or below) the Fermi energy at finite temperatures that reduce the spin polarization and, as a consequence, the efficiency of spintronics devices. Employing the constrained random-phase approximation (cRPA) within the full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave (FLAPW) method using maximally localized Wannier functions, we calculate the strength of the effective on-site Coulomb interaction (Hubbard $U$ and Hund exchange $J$) be…
The electronic structure and dielectric properties of the diamond, body centered cubic diamond (bc8), and hexagonal diamond (lonsdaleite) phases of carbon are computed using density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory with the emphasis on the excitonic picture of the solid phases relevant in the regimes of high-pressure physics and warm dense matter. We also discuss the capabilities of reproducing the inelastic x-ray scattering spectra in comparison with the existing models in light of recent x-ray scattering experiments on carbon and carbon bearing materials in the Megabar ran…
Recent progress in measuring the transport properties of individual molecules has triggered a substantial demand for {\it ab initio} transport calculations. Even though program packages are commercially available and placed on custom tailored to address this task, reliable information often is difficult and very time consuming to attain in the vast majority of cases, namely when the molecular conductance is much smaller than $e^2/h$. The article recapitulates procedures for molecular transport calculations from the point of view of time-dependent density functional theory. Emphasis is describi…
We calculate the $3s$- and $4s$-core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) spectra in the ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic transition metals by developing an \emph{ab initio} method. We obtain the spectra exhibiting the characteristic shapes as a function of binding energy in good agreement with experimental observations. The spectral shapes are strikingly different between the majority spin channel and the minority spin channel for ferromagnetic metals Ni, Co, and Fe, that is, large intensities appear in the higher binding energy side of the main peak (satellite) in the majority spin chan…
An advanced modeling approach is presented to shed light on the thermal transport properties of van der Waals materials (vdWMs) composed of single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) stacked on top of each other with a total or partial overlap only in the middle region. It relies on the calculation of dynamical matrices from first-principle and on their usage in a phonon quantum transport simulator. We observe that vibrations are transferred microscopically from one layer to the other along the overlap region which acts as a filter selecting out the states that can pass through it. O…
We present molecular dynamics simulations of solid NaNO$_2$ using pair potentials with the rigid-ion model. The crystal potential surface is calculated by using an \emph{a priori} method which integrates the \emph{ab initio} calculations with the Gordon-Kim electron gas theory. This approach is carefully examined by using different population analysis methods and comparing the intermolecular interactions resulting from this approach with those from the \emph{ab initio} Hartree-Fock calculations. Our numerics shows that the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in solid NaNO$_2$ is trigge…
The Z-scan measurements for the non-centrosymmetric optical crystals β-BaTeMo2O9 (BTMO) were performed. The corresponding experiments were carried out using the 5 ns pulses of the second harmonic of a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser at the 532 nm wavelength. It was shown that the studied crystals possess promising third-order optical susceptibilities, which allow to use the crystal as optical limiters. The comparison with other oxide materials is presented. To clarify the origin of the observed effect, the electronic and optical properties of BTMO were calculated using the density functional theory (D…
The Fermi-surfaces and Elliott-Yafet spin-mixing parameter (EYP) of several elemental metals are studied by \emph{ab initio} calculations. We focus first on the anisotropy of the EYP as a function of the direction of the spin-quantization axis [Phys.~Rev.~Lett.\ \textbf{109}, 236603 (2012)]. We analyze in detail the origin of the gigantic anisotropy in $5d$ hcp metals as compared to $5d$ cubic metals by band-structure calculations and discuss the stability of our results against an applied magnetic field. We further present calculations of light (4$d$ and 3$d$) hcp crystals, where we find a hu…
In this paper, we present ab initio computer models of Cu-doped amorphous Ta2O5 , a promising candidate for Conducting Bridge Random Access Memory (CBRAM) memory devices, and study the structural, electronic, charge transport and vibrational properties based on plane-wave density functional methods. We offer an atomistic picture of the process of phase segregation/separation between Cu and Ta2O5 subnetworks. Electronic calculations show that the models are conducting with extended Kohn-Sham orbitals around the Fermi level. In addition to that, we also characterize the electronic transport usin…
Linear and non-linear spectroscopies are powerful tools used to investigate the energetics and dynamics of electronic excited states of both molecules and crystals. While highly accurate \emph{ab initio} calculations of molecular spectra can be performed relatively routinely, extending these calculations to periodic systems is challenging. Here, we present calculations of the linear absorption spectrum and pump-probe two-photon photoemission spectra of the naphthalene crystal using equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations (EOM-CCSD). Molecular acene crystals…
In recent experiments the irradiation of insulators of perovskite type with swift heavy ions under glancing incidence has been shown to provide a unique means to generate periodically arranged nanodots at the surface. The physical origin of these patterns has been suggested to stem from a highly anisotropic electron density distribution within the bulk. In order to show the relevance of the electron density distribution of the target we present a model calculation for the system Xe$^{+23}$ $\to$ SrTiO$_{3}$ that is known to produce the aforementioned surface modifications. On the basis of the …
The structural phase behaviors of pure zirconium metal under compressions up to $160$ GPa at room temperature are investigated from the perspective of ensemble theory where the partition function is solved by our recently proposed method with \emph{ab initio} precision. The derived Gibbs free energy is employed as the very criterion to determine phase transitions and the calculated transition pressures of the $α\rightarrowω\rightarrowβ$ are $6.93$ and $24.83$ GPa respectively, the former one of which is so far the only theoretical result agreeing with multiple experimental measurements to our …
The unique electronic and magnetic properties of Lanthanides molecular complexes place them at the forefront of the race towards high-temperature single-ion magnets and magnetic quantum bits. The design of compounds of this class has so far been almost exclusively driven by static crystal field considerations, with emphasis on increasing the magnetic anisotropy barrier. This guideline has now reached its maximum potential and new progress can only come from a deeper understanding of spin-phonon relaxation mechanisms. In this work we compute relaxation times fully ab initio and unveil the natur…
We present a new technique aimed at preventing plane-wave based total energy and stress calculations from the effect of abrupt changes in basis set size. This s cheme relies on the interpolation of energy as a function of the number of plane waves, and on a scaling hypothesis that allows to perform the interpolation for a unique reference volume. From a theoretical point of view, the new method is compared to those already pr oposed in the literature, and its more rigorous derivation is emphasized. From a practical point of view, we illustrate the importance of the correction o n different mat…
Mn$_3$O$_4$ is a spin frustrated magnet that adopts a tetragonally distorted spinel structure at ambient conditions and a CaMn$_2$O$_4$-type postspinel structure at high pressure. We conducted both optical measurements and \emph{ab} \emph{initio} calculations, and systematically studied the electronic band structures of both the spinel and postspinel Mn$_3$O$_4$ phases. For both phases, theoretical electronic structures are consistent with the optical absorption spectra, and display characteristic band-splitting of the conduction band. The band gap obtained from the absorption spectra is 1.91(…
Determining the material properties of layered systems like graphite and bigraphene from \emph{ab initio} calculations is very difficult. This is mostly due to the complex van der Waals forces which help bind the layers. Recently, Chen~\emph{et al.} [Chen et al., Sci. Rep. 3, 3046 (2013)] reported a novel approach for extracting geometry dependent energetic properties of general, layered graphitic systems from periodic graphite calculations on AA, AB and ABC graphite. Unfortunately, their analysis suffered from a number of technical and theoretical flaws which make their results unreliable for…
How magnetism emerges in low-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides at the monolayer limit is still an open question. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of single crystal and monolayer VSe$_{2}$, both experimentally and \emph{ab initio}. Magnetometry, X-ray magnetic circular dichrosim (XMCD) and \emph{ab initio} calculations demonstrate that the charge density wave in bulk stoichiometric VSe$_{2.0}$ causes a structural distortion with a strong reduction in the density of sates at the Fermi level, prompting the system towards a non-magnet…
The past years have witnessed impressive advances in electronic structure calculation, especially in the complexity and size of the systems studied, as well as in computation time. Linear scaling methods based on empirical tight-binding Hamiltonians which can describe chemical bonding, and have a computational time proportional to the number of atoms N in the system, are of particular interest for simulations in material science. By contrast conventional diagonalization schemes scale as $N^{3}$. In combination with judiciously fitted parameters and an implementation suited for MD, it is possib…
Silicon-vacancy (SiV) center in diamond is a photoluminescence (PL) center with a characteristic zero-phonon line energy at 1.681 eV that acts as a solid-state single photon source and, potentially, as a quantum bit. The majority of the luminescence intensity appears in the zero-phonon line; nevertheless, about 30\% of the intensity manifests in the phonon sideband. Since phonons play an essential role in the operation of this system, it is of importance to understand the vibrational properties of the SiV center in detail. To this end, we carry out density functional theory calculations of dil…
