The nature of phase separation in $Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3$ has been probed by linear as well as nonlinear magnetic susceptibilities and resistivity measurements across the 2nd order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition ($T_C$) and 1st order ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition ($T_N$). We found that the ferromagnetic (metallic) clusters, which form with the onset of long-range order in the system at $T_C$, continuously decrease their size with the decrease in temperature and coexist with non-ferromagnetic (insulating) clusters. These non-ferromagnetic clusters are identified to be antiferromagnetic. Significantly, it is shown that they do not arise because of the superheating effect of the lower temperature 1st order transition. Thus reveals unique phase coexistence in a manganite around half-doping encompassing two long-range order transitions. Both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters form at $T_C$ and persist much below $T_N$. Substitution of quenched disorder (Ga) at Mn-site promotes antiferromagnetism at the cost of ferromagnetism without adding any magnetic interaction or introducing any significant lattice distortion. Moreover, increase in disorder decreases the ferromagnetic cluster size and with 7.5% Ga substitution clusters size reduces to the single domain limit. Yet, all the samples show significant short-range ferromagnetic interaction much above $T_C$. Resistivity measurements also reveal the novel phase coexistence identified from the magnetic measurements. It is significant that, increase in disorder up to 7.5% increases the resistivity of the low temperature antiferromagnetic phase by about four orders.
High resolution neutron diffraction shows that the mesoscopic separation into ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases and the FM transition temperature T_C in the perovskite manganite (La_{1-y}Pr_{y})_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3 strongly depend on the quenched correlated disorder. The different disorder strengths are achieved by different procedures of the sample synthesis and quantitatively characterized by the micro-strain-type diffraction peak broadening. The system shifts to predominantly one phase state with smaller T_C as the correlated disorder strength is decreased supporting the …
We report direct experimental evidence of the effect of quenched random field on magnetic ordering of La_(0.5)Gd_(0.2)Sr_(0.3)MnO_(3) manganites system. We demonstrate magnetic measurements providing serious evidence to support that quenched random field of Gd divides the system in finite size clusters which undergo cluster-glass like freezing. The size or concentration of these clusters is found to be closely related to the effect of random field, which in turn is a function of applied field.
Magnetic field induced step-like changes in magnetization and resistivity of SmSr manganites were studied. A strong dependence of these features on the cooling rate was observed. Magnetostriction, however, does not show the presence of large strain in our samples. From all these features we can rule out the conventional explanation of magnetization jumps as a consequence of martensitic transition. We propose instead that quenched by fast cooling disorder leads to the formation of an inhomogeneous metastable state and to subsequent magnetization jumps.
We show that the transition in AMnO3 from the orthorhombic perovskite phase to the hexagonal phase is promoted by inducing disorder on the A-site. The gap between the orthorhombic and the hexagonal phase is widened for disordered, mixed yttrium-gadolinium manganite samples. At the cost of the orthorhombic phase a two phase region emerges. The phase separation exhibits very unusual thermodynamical behaviour. We also show that high pressure synthesis favours the orthorhombic phase. YMnO3 is formed in the orthorhombic phase at 15 kbar.
The nature of orbital order-disorder transition has been studied in the La(1-x)Nd(x)MnO(3) (x = 0.0-1.0) series which covers the entire range between two end points - LaMnO(3) and NdMnO(3) - as well as in La(0.85)Nd(0.1)Sr(0.05)MnO(3) and La(0.8)Nd(0.1)Sr(0.1)MnO(3). It has been observed that the first-order nature of the transition gives way to higher order with the increase in "x" in the case of pure manganites. The latent heat (L) associated with the transition, first, drops with a steeper slope within x = 0.0-0.3 and, then, gradually over a range 0.3<x<0.9. This drop could, possibly, be du…
We present evidence that the insulator to metal transition in (La,Ca)MnO3 near x~0.2 is driven by the suppression of coherent Jahn-Teller distortions, originating from d type orbital ordering. The orbital ordered state is characterised by large long-range Q2 distortions below To*-o'. Above To*-o' we find evidence for coexistence between an orbital-ordered and -disordered state. This behaviour is discussed in terms of electronic phases of an orbital ordered insulating and orbital-disordered metallic states.

The discovery of novel structural and physical properties in the $A$-site ordered manganite $R$BaMn$_{2}$O$_{6}$ ($R$ = Y and rare earth elements) has demanded new comprehension about perovskite manganese oxides. In the present study, the $A$-site disordered form, $R_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$, has been investigated and compared with both $R$BaMn$_{2}$O$_{6}$ and $R_{0.5}A_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ ($A$: Sr, Ca) in the structures and electromagnetic properties. $R_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ has a primitive cubic perovskite cell in the structure and magnetic glassy states are dominant as its ground state, …
The half-doped manganite, (Eu0.4La0.1)(Sr0.4Ca0.1)MnO3, has been found to exhibit sharp step-like metamagnetic transitions below 5 K. The number of magnetic steps increases with decreasing temperature and this number suddenly rises from 3 at 2 K to ~50 at 1.7 K. The self-similar character of the multiple magnetic steps at reduced temperature identifies these steps as avalanche-like transitions. The occurrence of a multitude of magnetic steps at low temperatures, the decreasing effect of magnetic field sweep rate on the step-like metamagnetism, and the decreasing irreversibility of transition i…
Coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases over a range of temperature as well as magnetic field have been reported in many materials of current interest, showing disorder-broadened 1st order transitions. Anomalous history effects observed in magnetization and resistivity are being explained invoking the concepts of kinetic arrest akin to glass transitions. From magnetization measurements traversing novel paths in field-temperature space, we obtain the intriguing result that the regions of the sample which can be supercooled to lower temperatures undergo kinetic-arrest at higher tem…
The double-exchange model for the Mn oxides with orbital degeneracy is studied with including on-site Coulomb repulsion, Jahn-Teller (J-T) coupling and doping-induced disorder. In the strong interaction limit, it is mapped onto a single-band Anderson model, in which all scattering mechanisms can be treated on an equal footing. A sharp rise in the mean square fluctuation of lattice distortions is found near the Curie temperature $T_c$, in agreement with experiments. We show that the spin and J-T disorders lead to a metal-insulator transition (MIT) only at low carrier density. The MIT observed i…
We present a new approach based on the static density functional theory (DFT) to describe paramagentic MnO, which is a representative paramagnetic Mott insulator. We appended the spin noncollinearity and the canonical ensemble to the magnetic sampling method (MSM), which is one of the supercell approaches based on disordered local moment model. The combination of the noncollinear MSM (NCMSM) with DFT$+U$ represents a highly favorable computational method called NCMSM$+U$ to accurately determine the paramagnetic properties of MnO with moderate numerical cost. The effects of electron correlation…
The dynamic magnetic properties of the distorted perovskite system La{0.7-x}Y{x}Ca{0.3}MnO{3} (0 <= x <= 0.15) have been investigated by ac-susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements, with emphasis on relaxation and aging studies. They evidence for x >= 0.10 the appearance of a metallic cluster glass phase, that develops just below the ferromagnetic transition temperature. The clusters grow with decreasing temperature down to a temperature T(f0) at which they freeze due to severe intercluster frustration. The formation of these clusters is explained by the presence of yttrium induced loc…
We report low temperature specific heat measurements of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ ($0.3\leq x \leq 0.5$) and La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ with and without applied magnetic field. An excess specific heat, $C^{\prime}(T)$, of non-magnetic origin associated with charge ordering is found for all the samples. A magnetic field sufficient to induce the transition from the charge-ordered state to the ferromagnetic metallic state does not completely remove the $C^{\prime}$ contribution. This suggests that the charge ordering is not completely destroyed by a "melting" magnetic field. In addition, the…
We give an overview on several recent topics of colossal magnetoresistive manganites in both experiments and theories, focusing on the effect of quenched disorder. The disorder is intrinsically involved since the compounds are solid solutions, and its importance has been pointed out in several experiments of transport and magnetic properties. Recent progress in the experimental control of the strength of disorder is also reviewed. Theoretically, the effect of the disorder has been explored within the framework of the double-exchange mechanism. Several efforts to understand the phase diagram an…
The crystal and magnetic structures of the specified CMR manganite system have been studied as a function of $y=(0.2-1)$ across the metal-insulator (MI) transition, and of the oxygen mass ($^{16}$O, $^{18}$O). We quantitatively show how the polaronic narrowing of the carrier bandwidth and the crystal lattice micro-strains control the volume fractions of the mesoscopic ferro- and antiferromagnetic clusters. A well-defined dip in the transition temperatures and the suppression of all the types of long range ordering seen near the MI-transition at $y\simeq0.9$ indicate a key role of the quenched …
The effect of quenched disorder on the multiphase competition has been investigated by examining the pressure phase diagram of half doped manganite Ln0.5B0.5MnO3 (Ln = Sm and Nd) with A-site disorders. Sm0.5Ba0.5MnO3, a spin glass insulator at ambient pressure, switches to a ferromagnetic metal with increasing pressure, followed by a rapid increase of the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc. The rapid increase of Tc was confirmed also for Nd0.5Ba0.5MnO3. These observations indicate that the unusual suppression of the multicritical phase boundary in the A-site disordered system, previously …
Quantum electrodynamics in 2+1-dimensions (QED$_3$) is a strongly coupled conformal field theory (CFT) of a U(1) gauge field coupled to $2N$ two-component massless fermions. The $N=2$ CFT has been proposed as a ground state of the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We study QED$_3$ in the presence of weak quenched disorder in its two spatial directions. When the disorder explicitly breaks the fermion flavor symmetry from SU($2N$)$\rightarrow$U(1)$\times$SU($N$) but preserves time-reversal symmetry, we find that the theory flows to a non-trivial fixed line at non-zero disorder with a c…
The problem of pseudo-gap formation in an electronic system, induced by the fluctuations of the order parameter is revisited. We make the observation that a large class of current theories are theoretically equivalent to averaging the Free energy of the pseudo-gap system over a quenched-disordered distribution of the order parameter. We examine the cases of both infinite and finite correlation length, showing how the interplay of pseudo-gap formation and superconductivity can be treated in this approach.
The magnetic correlations in the charge- and orbital-ordered manganite La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) have been studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. Out of the well-defined CE-type magnetic structure with the corresponding magnons a competition between CE-type and ferromagnetic fluctuations develops. Whereas ferromagnetic correlations are fully suppressed by the static CE-type order at low temperature, elastic and inelastic CE-type correlations disappear with the melting of the charge-orbital order at high temperature. In its charge-orbital disordered phase, La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(…
We have studied the chemical potential shift in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) as a function of doped hole concentration by core-level x-ray photoemission. The shift is monotonous, which means that there is no electronic phase separation on a macroscopic scale, whereas it is consistent with the nano-meter scale cluster formation induced by chemical disorder. Comparison of the observed shift with the shift deduced from the electronic specific heat indicates that hole doping in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) is well described by the rigid-band picture. In particular no mass enhancement toward the metal-insulator bounda…
We consider paradigmatic quenched disordered quantum spin models, viz., the XY spin glass and random-field XY models, and show that quenched averaged quantum correlations can exhibit the order-from-disorder phenomenon for finite-size systems as well as in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, we find that the order-from-disorder can get more pronounced in the presence of temperature by suitable tuning of the system parameters. The effects are found for entanglement measures as well as for information-theoretic quantum correlation ones, although the former show them more prominently. We also obser…
We study spin density wave quantum critical points in two dimensional metals with a quenched disorder potential coupling to the electron density. Adopting an $ε$-expansion around three spatial dimensions, where both disorder and the Yukawa-type interaction between electrons and bosonic order parameter fluctuations are marginal, we present a perturbative, one-loop renormalization group analysis of this problem, where the interplay between fermionic and bosonic excitations is fully incorporated. Considering two different Gaussian disorder models restricted to small-angle scattering, we show that…
We have studied the temperature evolution of the inverse photoemission spectra of phase separated La$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$MnO$_{3}$. To identify the features in the room temperature experimental spectra, band structure calculations using Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function method were carried out. We find that the features generated by local moment disorder calculations give a better match with the experimental spectrum. In the insulating phase, we observed unusually an increased intensity at around the Fermi level. This puzzling behaviour is attributed to the shift in the chemical potential t…
We investigate the influence of quenched disorder on the dynamic structure factor of Heisenberg bilayers on the square, triangular, and kagome lattice in the quantum paramagnetic phase. Perturbative continuous unitary transformations and white graphs are employed to calculate the one-triplon contribution up to high orders in perturbation about the dimer limit for bimodal and continuous disorder. For the square lattice we find that the lifetime of the gap mode is increased by stronger quantum correlations while stronger disorder effects are observed for the triangular lattice due to geometric f…
We investigate the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model (1D KLM) for ferromagnetic Kondo couplings, by using the bosonization method. The ferromagnet ic 2-leg spin ladder and the S=1 antiferromagnet occur as new one-dimensional Kondo insulators, for a half-filled band. First,a very small hole-doping makes the charge sector massless and it can produce, either an incommensurate RKKY interaction or a S=1 ferromagnet according to the strength of the ferromagnetic Kondo coupling. Second, we investigate, the effects of a weak and quenched disorder on these two Kondo insulators, by applying renormaliz…
We have carried out a theoretical analysis of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson effective field theory of a classical incommensurate CDW in the presence of weak quenched disorder. While the possibility a sharp phase transition and long-range CDW order are precluded in such systems, we show that any discrete symmetry breaking aspect of the charge order -- nematicity in the case of the unidirectional (stripe) CDW we consider explicitly -- generically survives up to a non-zero critical disorder strength. Such "vestigial order", which is subject to unambiguous macroscopic detection, can serve as an avata…
We use the Popov-Fedotov representation of spin operators to construct an effective action for a Kondo lattice model with quenched disorder at finite temperatures. We study the competition between the Kondo effect and frozen spin order in Ising-like spin glass. We present the derivation of new mean-field equations for the spin-glass order parameter and analyze the effects of screening of localized spins by conduction electrons on the spin-glass phase transition.
We investigate bipartite entanglement in random quantum $XY$ models at equilibrium. Depending on the intrinsic time scales associated with equilibration of the random parameters and measurements associated with observation of the system, we consider two distinct kinds of disorder, namely annealed and quenched disorders. We conduct a comparative study of the effects of disorder on nearest-neighbor entanglement, when the nature of randomness changes from being annealed to quenched. We find that entanglement properties of the annealed and quenched disordered systems are drastically different from…
We study the renormalization group flow in general quantum field theories with quenched disorder, focusing on random quantum critical points. We show that in disorder-averaged correlation functions the flow mixes local and non-local operators. This leads to a new crossover exponent related to the disorder (as in classical disorder). We show that the time coordinate is rescaled at each RG step, leading to Lifshitz scaling at critical points. We write a universal formula for the dynamical scaling exponent z for weak disorder.
We study the impact of quenched disorder (random exchange couplings or site dilution) on easy-plane pyrochlore antiferromagnets. In the clean system, order-by-disorder selects a magnetically ordered state from a classically degenerate manifold. In the presence of randomness, however, different orders can be chosen locally depending on details of the disorder configuration. Using a combination of analytical considerations and classical Monte-Carlo simulations, we argue that any long-range-ordered magnetic state is destroyed beyond a critical level of randomness where the system breaks into magn…
The competition between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order in underdoped cuprates has now been widely reported, but the role of disorder in this competition has yet to be fully resolved. A central question is whether disorder sets the length scale of the CDW order, for instance by pinning charge density fluctuations or disrupting an otherwise long range order. Using resonant soft x-ray scattering, we investigate the sensitivity of CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO) to varying levels of oxygen disorder. We find that quench cooling YBCO$_{6.67}$ (YBCO$_{6.75}$) crystal…
We show theoretically that spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the pyrochlore oxide Y2Mo2O7, which is free of quenched disorder, can exhibit a simultaneous glass transition, working as dynamical randomness to each other. The interplay of spins and orbitals is mediated by the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion that selects the choice of orbitals, which then generates variant spin exchange interactions ranging from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic ones. Our Monte Carlo simulations detect the power-law divergence of the relaxation times and the negative divergence of both the magnetic and dielec…
The optical response of a system of two-dimensional Bose condensate droplets with an internal charge structure interacting with impurities is considered within the mode-coupling theory. It is found, that the glass transition in the system of droplets occurs at much stronger disorder as compared to the case of stuctureless point particles. The optical conductivity of the system is found to exhibit a complex oscillating structure, intimately related to the charge distribution within the droplets. The application of the model to the problem of the far IR optical conductivity of doped cuprates (in…
The stability of the Dirac spin-liquid on two-dimensional lattices has long been debated. It was recently demonstrated [Nature Commun. 10, 4254 (2019) and Phys. Rev. B 93, 144411 (2016)] that the staggered $π$-flux Dirac spin-liquid phase on the non-bipartite triangular lattice may be stable in the clean limit. However, quenched disorder plays a crucial role in determining whether such a phase is experimentally viable. For SU(2) spin systems, the effective zero-temperature, low-energy description of Dirac spin-liquids in $(2+1)$ dimensions is given by the compact quantum electrodynamics ($\rm …
We study the critical bosonic O(N) vector model with quenched random mass disorder in the large N limit. Due to the replicated action which is sometimes not bounded from below, we avoid the replica trick and adopt a traditional approach to directly compute the disorder averaged physical observables. At $N=\infty$, we can exactly solve the disordered model. The resulting low energy behavior can be described by two scale invariant theories, one of which has an intrinsic scale. At finite $N$, we find that the previously proposed attractive disordered fixed point at $d=2$ continues to exist at $d=…
