Detectors with an electroluminesence readout show an excellence performance in respect of energy resolution making them interesting for various applications as X-ray detection, double beta and dark matter experiments, Compton and gamma cameras, etc. In the following the study of a readout based on avalanche photo diodes to detect directly the VUV photons is presented. Results of measurements with 5 APDs in xenon at pressures between 1 and 1.65 bar are shown indicating that such a readout can provide excellent energy and a moderate position resolution.
The Crystal Barrel is an electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 1380 CsI(Tl) scintillators, and is currently installed at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment where it is used to detect decay products from photoproduction of mesons. The readout of the Crystal Barrel has been upgraded in order to integrate the detector into the first level of the trigger and to increase its sensitivity for neutral final states. The new readout uses avalanche photodiodes in the front-end and a dual back-end with branches optimized for energy and time measurement, respectively. An FPGA-based cluster finder processes the…
CALIFA is the high efficiency and energy resolution calorimeter for the R3B experiment at FAIR, intended for detecting high energy light charged particles and gamma rays in scattering experiments, and is being commissioned during the Phase-0 experiments at FAIR, between 2018 and 2020. It surrounds the reaction target in a segmented configuration with 2432 detection units made of long CsI(Tl) finger-shaped scintillator crystals. CALIFA has a 10 year intended operational lifetime as the R3B calorimeter, necessitating measures to be taken to ensure enduring performance. In this paper we present a…
Recent interest in pile-up mitigation through fast timing at the HL-LHC has focused attention on technologies that now achieve minimum ionising particle (MIP) time resolution of 30 picoseconds or less. The constraints of technical maturity and radiation tolerance narrowed the options in this rapidly developing field for the ATLAS and CMS upgrades to low gain avalanche detectors and silicon photomultipliers. In a variety of applications where occupancies and doses are lower, devices with pixel elements of order 1 cm$^2$, nevertheless achieving 30 ps, would be attractive. In this paper, deep dif…
We present here the latest results obtained with the C-RED One camera developed by First Light Imaging for fast ultra-low noise infrared applications. This camera uses the Leonardo Saphira e-APD 320x256 infrared sensor in an autonomous cryogenic environment with a low vibration pulse tube and with embedded readout electronics system. Some recent improvements were made to the camera. The first important one concerns the total noise of the camera. Limited to 1.75 microns wavelength cut-off with proper cold filters, looking at a blackbody at room temperature and f/4 beam aperture, we now measure …
A Cherenkov detector based on an array of five lead fluoride ($β$-PbF$_2$) crystals of size 30 mm$\times$30 mm$\times$160 mm read out by reverse-type avalanche photodiodes (APD's) of active area 10 mm$\times$10 mm was used to measure the flux of secondary particles emerging from the annihilation of pulsed beams of antiprotons at the Antiproton Decelerator of CERN. We compared the relative photon yields of radiators made of $β$-PbF$_2$, fused silica, UV-transparent acrylic, lead glass, and a lead-free, high-refractive-index glass. Some {\it p-i-n} photodiodes were also used for the readout, but…
We present an FPGA-based readout chip emulator board for the CMS Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) detector upgrade. The emulator board uses an Intel Cyclone 10 GX FPGA to emulate the digital functions of four Endcap Layer Readout Chips (ETROCs). Based on the actual ETROC design, the firmware is implemented and verified. The emulator board is being used for the ETROC digital design verification and system development.

BDAQ53 is a readout system and verification framework for hybrid pixel detector readout chips of the RD53 family. These chips are designed for the upgrade of the inner tracking detectors of the ATLAS and CMS experiments. BDAQ53 is used in applications where versatility and rapid customization are required, such as in laboratory testing environments, test beam campaigns, and permanent setups for quality control measurements. It consists of custom and commercial hardware, a Python-based software framework, and FPGA firmware. BDAQ53 is developed as open source software with both software and firm…
This paper describes a FADC Readout system developed for the tap water $α/β$ dose monitoring system which is based on EJ444 phoswich scintillation detector and wavelength shifting fiber readout. The Readout system contains dual sampling channels that can supply sampling rate up to 1 GSPS, 14-Bit vertical resolution and adequate effective number of bits (9.7 Bits at 10 MHz), which is optimum for the discrimination of the minimal difference between alpha/beta signals. Moreover, the system is based on a ZYNQ SoC which provides high data throughput speed, low latency and excellent flexibility. As …
In this paper, we present a dual-channel serializer ASIC, LOCx2, and its pin-compatible backup, LOCx2-130, for detector front-end readout. LOCx2 is fabricated in a 0.25-um Silicon-on-Sapphire CMOS process and each channel operates at 5.12 Gbps, while LOCx2-130 is fabricated in a 130-nm bulk CMOS process and each channel operates at 4.8 Gbps. The power consumption and the transmission latency are 900 mW and 27 ns for LOCx2 and the corresponding simulation result of LOCx2-130 are 386 mW and 38 ns, respectively.
In this paper, we present the design and test results of LOCx2-130, a low-power, low-latency, dual-channel transmitter ASIC for detector front-end readout. LOCx2-130 has two channels of encoders and serializers, and each channel operates at 4.8 Gbps. LOCx2-130 can interface with three types of ADCs, an ASIC ADC and two COTS ADCs. LOCx2-130 is fabricated in a commercial 130-nm CMOS technology and is packaged in a 100-pin QFN package. LOCx2-130 consumes 440 mW and achieves a latency of less than 40.7 ns.
Cryogenic phonon-scintillation detectors (CPSD) for rare event search experiments require reliable, efficient and robust photon detectors that can resolve individual photons in a scintillation event.
Multiple application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) are required for the detectors if their readout channels are larger than that of ASIC channels. For a system with such a readout scheme, there is a need to configure channels among ASICs to achieve the lowest electronics noise and highest count rate. In this work, experiments were performed to investigate the performance of two different readout configurations between two ASICs in a cross-strip cadmium zinc telluride detector. A lower electronic noise level, better FWHM energy resolution performance, and higher count rate was found for t…
