Further progress in building high-granular large-scale systems based on Scintillation Tiles with MRS APD light readout (START) became possible thanks to the creation of an improved version of MRS APD. The cost of the system may now be significantly reduced by using inexpensive extruded scintillator. More than 160 START samples were assembled based on this design modification and proved to possess 100% MIP detection efficiency and the intrinsic noise rate of less than 0.08 Hz. Long-term stability of START characteristics was confirmed after 3.5 months of operation.
With the increases in the LHC instantaneous luminosity, maintaining effective triggering and avoiding dead time will become especially challenging. As the sensitivity of many physics studies, depends critically on the ability to maintain relatively low muon momentum thresholds, the identification of potential improvements in triggering is particularly important. The addition of a new muon detector to the existing CMS muon system in the very forward region allows for a substantial improvement in the performance of muon triggering. Integration of the new detector and the existing Cathode Strip C…
The muon detection system of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is based on different technologies for muon tracking and triggering. In particular, the muon system in the endcap disks of the detector consists of Resistive Plate Chambers for triggering and Cathode Strip Chambers for tracking. At present, the endcap muon system is only partially instrumented with the very forward detector region remaining uncovered. In view of a possible future extension of the muon endcap system, we report on a feasibility study on the use of Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors, in p…
During Phase-2 of the LHC, known as the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), the accelerator will increase its instantaneous luminosity to 5 $\times$ 10$^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, delivering an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$ over 10 years of operation starting from 2027. In view of the HL-LHC, the CMS muon system will be upgraded to sustain efficient muon triggering and reconstruction performance. Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) serve as dedicated detectors for muon triggering due to their excellent timing resolution, and will extend $|η|$ (pseudorapidity) up to a region of 2.4. Before Long …
Throughout the year 2011, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has operated with an instantaneous luminosity that has risen continually to around 4x10^33cm-2 s-1. With this prodigious high-energy proton collisions rate, efficient triggering on electrons and photons has become a major challenge for the LHC experiments. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment implements a sophisticated two-level online selection system that achieves a rejection factor of nearly 106. The first level (L1) is based on coarse information coming from the calorimeters and the muon detectors while the High-Level Trigger …
The outer shell of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC consists of a system of toroidal air-core magnets in order to allow for the precise measurement of the transverse momentum p$_T$ of muons, which in many physics channels are a signature of interesting physics processes. For the precise determination of the muon momentum Monitored Drift Tube chambers (MDT) with high position accuracy are used, while for the fast identification of muon tracks chambers with high time resolution are used, able to select muons above a predefined p$_T$ threshold for use in the first Level of the ATLAS triggering sys…
The PSI low-energy $μ$SR spectrometer is an instrument dedicated to muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements. Knowledge of the muon beam parameters such as spatial, kinetic energy and arrival-time distributions at the sample position are important ingredients to analyze the $μ$SR spectra. We present here the measured energy losses in the thin carbon foil of the muon start detector deduced from time-of-flight measurements. Muonium formation in the thin carbon foil (10 nm thickness) of the muon start detector also affect the measurable decay asymmetry and therefore need to be accounted for…
The CMS muon system operates gas-based detectors. Upgrades of the detectors and trigger components are needed to cope with increasingly challenging conditions of the HL-LHC. New irradiation tests are performed to ensure that the muon detectors will survive the harsher conditions and operate reliably. The new CERN GIF++ (Gamma Irradiation Facility) allowed to perform aging tests. We present results in terms of system performance under large backgrounds and after accelerated aging tests. New detectors will be added to improve the performance in the critical forward region: gas electron multiplie…
The small-strip Thin Gap Chamber (sTGC) will be used for both triggering and precision tracking purposes in the upgrade of the ATLAS forward muon spectrometer. Both sTGC pad and strip detectors are readout by a Trigger Data Serializer (TDS) ASIC in the trigger path. This ASIC has two operation modes to prepare trigger data from pad and strip detectors respectively. The pad mode (pad-TDS) collects the firing status for up to 104 pads from one detector layer and transmits the data at 4.8 Gbps to the pad trigger extractor every 25 ns. The pad trigger extractor collects pad-TDS data from eight det…
The innermost station of the present ATLAS forward muon detector needs to be upgraded for the super-LHC. We present a proposal to replace it with a sandwiched detector composed of several layers of small-radius Monitored Drift Tube chambers (sMDT) for precision tracking measurement and two stations of multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (mRPC) for triggering purpose. We describe the layout of the upgraded detector and the trigger strategy. Several modifications to the RPCs used in the ATLAS barrel region are needed to satisfy the super-LHC requirements. Various studies with the proposed mRPC ti…
Future collider detectors at muon colliders will be bombarded by Beam-Induced Backgrounds (BIB) due to the in-flight muon decays from the beam line. These backgrounds can inhibit the ability of the detector and subsequent data analysis to successfully reconstruct collision products. We explore methods for geometrically reducing these effects for use in the readout, triggering, and data analysis of future experiments. Studies are performed for a collision energy of 1.5~TeV, and a detector with a tungsten nozzle designed to block the majority of the BIB. In this context, detector strategies are …
The goals of the ongoing and planned ATLAS muon detector upgrades are to increase the acceptance for precision muon momentum measurement and triggering and to improve the rate capability of the muon chambers in the high-background regions corresponding to the increasing LHC luminosity. Smalldiameter Muon Drift Tube (sMDT) chambers have been developed for these purposes. With half the drift-tube diameter of the current ATLAS Muon Drift Tube (MDT) chambers with 30 mm drift tube diameter and otherwise unchanged operating parameters, the sMDT chambers share all the advantages of the MDTs, but have…

The small-diameter Muon Drift Tube (sMDT) chambers have been developed for these purposes. With half of the drift-tube diameter of the MDT chambers and otherwise unchanged operating parameters, sMDT chambers share the advantages of the MDTs, but have an order of magnitude higher rate capability and can be installed in detector regions where MDT chambers do not fit…
The NO$ν$A collaboration has constructed a 14,000 ton, fine-grained, low-Z, total absorption tracking calorimeter at an off-axis angle to an upgraded NuMI neutrino beam. This detector, with its excellent granularity and energy resolution and relatively low-energy neutrino thresholds, was designed to observe electron neutrino appearance in a muon neutrino beam, but it also has unique capabilities suitable for more exotic efforts. In fact, if an efficient upward-going muon trigger with sufficient cosmic ray background rejection can be demonstrated, NO$ν$A will be capable of a competitive indirec…
We report on studies of fast triggering and high-precision tracking using Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). Two beam tests were carried out with the 180 GeV muon beam at CERN using RPCs with gas gaps of 1.00 or 1.15 mm and equipped with readout strips with 1.27 mm pitch. This is the first beam test of RPCs with fine-pitch readout strips that explores simultaneously precision tracking and triggering capabilities. RPC signals were acquired with precision timing and charge integrating readout electronics at both ends of the strips. The time resolution was measured to be better than 600 ps and the …

The CMS experiment, located at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in CERN, has a redundant muon system composed by three different gaseous detector technologies: Cathode Strip Chambers (in the forward regions), Drift Tubes (in the central region), and Resistive Plate Chambers (both its central and forward regions). All three are used for muon reconstruction and triggering. The CMS RPC system confers robustness and redundancy to the muon trigger. The RPC system operation in the challenging background and pileup conditions of the LHC environment is presented. The RPC system provides information to …
The performance of all subsystems of the CMS muon detector has been studied by using a sample of proton--proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected at the LHC in 2010 that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 40 inverse picobarns. The measured distributions of the major operational parameters of the drift tube (DT), cathode strip chamber (CSC), and resistive plate chamber (RPC) systems met the design specifications. The spatial resolution per chamber was 80-120 micrometers in the DTs, 40-150 micrometers in the CSCs, and 0.8-1.2 centimeters in the RPCs. The time reso…
We report on the construction and upgrade of a Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Cosmic Muons Detector. We modify the electronics and mechanics to achieve a highly efficient gamma-ray and cosmic-ray detector. Each detector module uses a one-inch-thick scintillator, attached to a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and mounted on a solid aluminum frame. The detector uses scintillation to transform passing radiation into detectable photons that are guided toward a photocathode surface of the PMT, triggering the release of photoelectrons that are then amplified to yield measurable electronic signals. …
The LHCb experiment(Fig. 1), that is presently taking data at CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research) Large Hadron Collider (LHC), aims at the study of CP violation in the B meson sector. Its key elements is the Muon detector [1], which allows triggering, and muon identification from inclusive b decays. The electronic system (Fig. 2) of the whole detector is very complex and its Muon detector Experiment Control System (ECS) allows monitoring and control of a number of Front-End boards in excess of 7000. The present system in charge of controlling Muon detector Front-End (FE) Electronics co…
At present, part of the forward RPC muon system of the CMS detector at the CERN LHC remains uninstrumented in the high-ηregion. An international collaboration is investigating the possibility of covering the 1.6 < |η| < 2.4 region of the muon endcaps with large-area triple-GEM detectors. Given their good spatial resolution, high rate capability, and radiation hardness, these micro-pattern gas detectors are an appealing option for simultaneously enhancing muon tracking and triggering capabilities in a future upgrade of the CMS detector. A general overview of this feasibility study will be prese…

The ALICE Transition Radiation Detector contributes to the tracking, particle identification, and triggering capabilities of the experiment. It is composed of six layers of multi-wire proportional chambers, each of which is preceded by a radiator and a Xe/CO$_2$-filled drift volume. The signal is sampled in timebins of 100~ns over the drift length which allows for the reconstruction of chamber-wise track segments, both online and offline. The particle identification is based on the specific energy loss of charged particles and additional transition radiation photons, the latter being a signatu…
The SoLid detector was constructed during 2017 and started to take data in December 2017. Commissioning a new detector implies defining and understanding a whole set of new variables. On the one hand the environmental conditions are followed, and on the other hand quantities related to the stability of the detector are monitored. Cosmic muons are ideal for studying the stability of SoLid, because of their abundance due to the small overburden. Muons can be used to study the timing synchronisation and energy calibration of the detector on a daily timescale. They can be used to monitor the detec…
ALICE is the experiment at the CERN LHC devoted to study heavy-ion collisions. An upgrade program of the ALICE detector is ongoing toward the LHC Run 3 starting in 2022 together with the upgrade of the data acquisition system and the detector control system (DCS). One of the main projects of the current ALICE upgrade program is the addition of the muon forward tracker (MFT), a new silicon pixel detector located at forward rapidity. In this paper, we describe the DCS of the MFT detector which is entirely controlled via a finite state machine in a hierarchical system.
We report on the design of a serializer ASIC to be used in the ATLAS forward muon detector for trigger data transmission. We discuss the performance of a prototype chip covering power dissipation, latency and stable operating line rate. Tests show that the serializer is capable of running at least at 5.76 Gbps with a bit error ratio below 1x10^{-15}, and a power consumption of 200 mW running at 4.8 Gbps. The latency between the start of loading 30 bits into the serializer to the transmission of the first bit from the serializer is measured to be about 6 ns.
The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a systematic investigation of ionization cooling of a muon beam. The demonstration is based on a simplified version of a neutrino factory cooling channel. As the emittance measurement will be done on a particle-by-particle basis, sophisticated beam instrumentation has been developed to measure particle coordinates and timing vs RF. The muon beamline has been characterized and a preliminary measure of the beam emittance, using a particle-by-particle method with only the TOF detector system, has been performed (MICE STEP I)…
Muons from cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere provide a high-statistics source of particles that can be used to study the performance and calibration of the ATLAS detector. Cosmic-ray muons can penetrate to the cavern and deposit energy in all detector subsystems. Such events have played an important role in the commissioning of the detector since the start of the installation phase in 2005 and were particularly important for understanding the detector performance in the time prior to the arrival of the first LHC beams. Global cosmic-ray runs were undertaken in both 2008 and 2009 and th…
The ALICE Muon Trigger is currently yielded by a detector currently composed of 72 Bakelite single-gap Resistive Plate Chambers operated in maxi-avalanche mode, arranged in four 5.5x6.5 m2 detection planes. In order to meet the requirements posed by the forthcoming LHC high luminosity runs starting from 2021 onwards, in which ALICE will be read out in continuous mode, the Muon Trigger will become a Muon Identifier and will undergo a major upgrade. In the current setup, signals from about 21k strips are discriminated by 2400 non-amplified Front End (FEE) cards, whose thresholds are provided by …
The LHCb Muon system performance is presented using cosmic ray events collected in 2009. These events allowed to test and optimize the detector configuration before the LHC start. The space and time alignment and the measurement of chamber efficiency, time resolution and cluster size are described in detail. The results are in agreement with the expected detector performance.
The COSINE-100 dark matter search experiment has started taking physics data with the goal of performing an independent measurement of the annual modulation signal observed by DAMA/LIBRA. A muon detector was constructed by using plastic scintillator panels in the outermost layer of the shield surrounding the COSINE-100 detector. It is used to detect cosmic ray muons in order to understand the impact of the muon annual modulation on dark matter analysis. Assembly and initial performance test of each module have been performed at a ground laboratory. The installation of the detector in Yangyang …
