We overcome the barrier of constructing N=4 superconformal models in one space dimension for more than three particles. The D(2,1;alpha) superalgebra of our systems is realized on the coordinates and momenta of the particles, their superpartners and one complex pair of harmonic variables. The models are determined by two prepotentials, F and U, which must obey the WDVV and a Killing-type equation plus homogeneity conditions. We investigate permutation-symmetric solutions, with and without translation invariance. Models based on deformed A_n and BCD_n root systems are constructed for any value of alpha, and exceptional F_n-type and super root systems admit solutions as well. Translation-invariant mechanics occurs for any number of particles at alpha=-1/2 (osp(4|2) invariance as a degenerate limit) and for four particles at arbitrary alpha (three series).
We discuss the superconformal quantum mechanics arising from the M2-branes. We begin with a comprehensive review on the superconformal quantum mechanics and emphasize that conformal symmetry and supersymmetry in quantum mechanics contain a number of exotic and enlightening properties which do not occur in higher dimensional field theories. We see that superfield and superspace formalism is available for $\mathcal{N}\le 8$ superconformal mechanical models. We then discuss the M2-branes with a focus on the world-volume descriptions of the multiple M2-branes which are superconformal three-dimensi…
We survey the salient features and problems of conformal and superconformal mechanics and portray some of its developments over the past decade. Both classical and quantum issues of single- and multiparticle systems are covered.
We extend the differential form representation of N = (n,n) supersymmetric quantum mechanics to the superconformal case. We identify the superalgebras occurring for n = 1,2,4, give necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence, and give explicit geometric constructions of their generators and commutation relations. Quantum mechanics on the moduli space of instantons is considered as an example.
We formulate the equations which determine a potential function in an $\mathcal{N}=1$ higher derivative supersymmetric mechanics compatible with the $osp(2|1)\oplus so(d)$ symmetry and provide a few explicit examples.
The simple finite Lie superalgebras D(2,1;α), G(3), D(4,1), D(2,2), A(3,1) and F(4) admit D-module representations, given by a set of differential operators of a single real variable t, at a critical value of the scaling dimension λ. These superalgebras are one-dimensional N-extended superconformal algebras with N=4 (D(2,1;α)), N=7 (G(3)) and N=8 (the remaining ones). The critical D-module reps induce invariant actions in the Lagrangian framework for superconformal mechanics in D target dimensions. The N=8 critical scalings λ=1/(D-4) are linked to the D-dimensional harmonic functions with D=1,…
We couple dual pairs of N=8 superconformal mechanics with conical targets of dimension d and 8-d. The superconformal coupling generates an oscillator-type potential on each of the two target factors, with a frequency depending on the respective dual coordinates. In the case of the inhomogeneous (3,8,5) model, which entails a monopole background, it is necessary to add an extra supermultiplet of constants for half of the supersymmetry. The N=4 analog, joining an inhomogeneous (1,4,3) with a (3,4,1) multiplet, is also analyzed in detail.
We prove that the invariance of the N=2 superconformal quantum mechanics is controlled by subalgebras of a given twisted superalgebra made of 6 fermionic (nilpotent) generators and 6 bosonic generators (including a central charge). The superconformal quantum mechanics actions are invariant under this quite large twisted superalgebra. On the other hand, they are fully determined by a subalgebra with only 2 fermionic and 2 bosonic (the central charge and the ghost number) generators. The invariant actions are Q_i-exact (i=1,2,...,6), with a Q_{i'}-exact (i'\neq i) antecedent for all 6 fermionic …
In the recent paper, Bruce and Duplij introduced a double-graded version of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SQM). It is an extension of Lie superalgebraic nature of ${\cal N}=1$ SQM to a $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-graded superalgebra. In this work, we propose an extension of Bruce-Duplij model to higher values of $\cal N.$ Furthermore, it is shown that our construction of double-graded SQM is a special case of the method which converts a given Lie superalgebra to a $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-graded superalgebra. By employing this method one may convert a model of superconformal mechanics to its double-graded ve…
Both the ${\cal N}=7$ superconformal quantum mechanics possessing the exceptional $G(3)$ Lie superalgebra as dynamical symmetry and its associated deformed oscillator with $G(3)$ as spectrum-generating superalgebra are presented. This superconformal quantum mechanics, uniquely defined up to similarity transformations, is obtained via the octonionically-induced "quasi-nonassociative" method employed to derive the exceptional ${\cal N}=8$ $F(4)$ model. To construct the $G(3)$ theories, the covariant embedding of the $7$-dimensional representation of the Lie algebra $g_2$ within the $8\times 8$ m…
We show that for positive integer values $l$ of the parameter in the conformal mechanics model the system possesses a hidden nonlinear superconformal symmetry, in which reflection plays a role of the grading operator. In addition to the even $so(1,2)\oplus u(1)$-generators, the superalgebra includes $2l+1$ odd integrals, which form the pair of spin-$(l+{1/2})$ representations of the bosonic subalgebra and anticommute for order $2l+1$ polynomials of the even generators. This hidden symmetry, however, is broken at the level of the states in such a way that the action of the odd generators violat…
The OSp(2|2)-invariant planar dynamics of a D=4 superparticle near the horizon of a large mass extreme black hole is described by an N=2 superconformal mechanics, with the SO(2) charge being the superparticle's angular momentum. The {\it non-manifest} superconformal invariance of the superpotential term is shown to lead to a shift in the SO(2) charge by the value of its coefficient, which we identify as the orbital angular momentum. The full SU(1,1|2)-invariant dynamics is found from an extension to N=4 superconformal mechanics.
Recent years have seen an upsurge of interest in dynamical realizations of the superconformal group SU(1,1|2) in mechanics. Remarking that SU(1,1|2) is a particular member of a chain of supergroups SU(1,1|n) parametrized by an integer n, here we begin a systematic study of SU(1,1|n) multi-particle mechanics. A representation of the superconformal algebra su(1,1|n) is constructed on the phase space spanned by m copies of the (1,2n,2n-1) supermultiplet. We show that the dynamics is governed by two prepotentials V and F, and the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde equation for F shows up as a cons…
Solvability of the ubiquitous quantum harmonic oscillator relies on a spectrum generating osp(1|2) superconformal symmetry. We study the problem of constructing all quantum mechanical models with a hidden osp(1|2) symmetry on a given space of states. This problem stems from interacting higher spin models coupled to gravity. In one dimension, we show that the solution to this problem is the Plyushchay family of quantum mechanical models with hidden superconformal symmetry obtained by viewing the harmonic oscillator as a one dimensional Dirac system, so that Grassmann parity equals wavefunction …
We investigate how the Lax-Novikov integral in the perfectly invisible $PT$-regularized zero-gap quantum conformal and superconformal mechanics systems affects on their (super)-conformal symmetries. We show that the expansion of the conformal symmetry with this integral results in a nonlinearly extended generalized Shrödinger algebra. The $PT$-regularized superconformal mechanics systems in the phase of the unbroken exotic nonlinear $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Poincaré symmetry are described by nonlinearly super-extended Schrödinger algebra with the $osp(2|2)$ sub-superalgebra. In the partially brok…
At critical values of the scaling dimension $λ$, supermultiplets of the global ${\cal N}$-Extended one-dimensional Supersymmetry algebra induce $D$-module representations of finite superconformal algebras (the latters being identified in terms of the global supermultiplet and its critical scaling dimension). For ${\cal N}=4,8$ and global supermultiplets $(k, {\cal N}, {\cal N}-k)$, the exceptional superalgebras $D(2,1;α)$ are recovered for ${\cal N}=4$, with a relation between $α$ and the scaling dimension given by $α= (2-k)λ$. For ${\cal N}=8$ and $k\neq 4$ all four ${\cal N}=8$ finite superc…
We revisit the (untwisted) superfield approach to one-dimensional multi-particle systems with N=4 superconformal invariance. The requirement of a standard (flat) bosonic kinetic energy implies the existence of inertial (super-)coordinates, which is nontrivial beyond three particles. We formulate the corresponding integrability conditions, whose solution directly yields the superpotential, the two prepotentials and the bosonic potential. The structure equations for the two prepotentials, including the WDVV equation, follow automatically. The general solution for translation-invariant three-part…
The linear (homogeneous and inhomogeneous) (k, N, N-k) supermultiplets of the N-extended one-dimensional Supersymmetry Algebra induce D-module representations for the N=2,4,8 superconformal algebras. For N=2, the D-module representations of the A(1,0) superalgebra are obtained. For N=4 and scaling dimension λ=0, the D-module representations of the A(1,1) superalgebra are obtained. For $λ\neq 0$, the D-module representations of the D(2,1;α) superalgebras are obtained, with $α$ determined in terms of the scaling dimension $λ$ according to: $α=-2λ$ for k=4, i.e. the (4,4) supermultiplet, $α=-λ$ f…
We show that a simple change of the classical boson-fermion coupling constant, $2α\to 2αn $, $n\in \N$, in the superconformal mechanics model gives rise to a radical change of a symmetry: the modified classical and quantum systems are characterized by the nonlinear superconformal symmetry. It is generated by the four bosonic integrals which form the so(1,2) x u(1) subalgebra, and by the 2(n+1) fermionic integrals constituting the two spin-n/2 so(1,2)-representations and anticommuting for the order n polynomials of the even generators. We find that the modified quantum system with an integer va…
We study the spectrum generating closed nonlinear superconformal algebra that describes $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-extensions of rationally deformed quantum harmonic oscillator and conformal mechanics models with coupling constant $g=m(m+1)$, $m\in {\mathbb N}$. It has a nature of a nonlinear finite $W$ superalgebra being generated by higher derivative integrals, and generally contains several different copies of either deformed superconformal $\mathfrak{osp}(2|2)$ algebra in the case of super-extended rationally deformed conformal mechanics models, or deformed super-Schrodinger algebra in the case…
The geometry arising from Michelson & Strominger's study of N=4B supersymmetric quantum mechanics with superconformal D(2,1;alpha)-symmetry is a hyperKaehler manifold with torsion (HKT) together with a special homothety. It is shown that different parameters alpha are related via changes in potentials for the HKT target spaces. For alpha not 0 or -1, we describe how each such HKT 4m-manifold M is derived from a space N of dimension 4m-4 which is quaternionic Kaehler with torsion and carries an Abelian instanton.
The twisting function describing a nonstandard (super-Jordanian) quantum deformation of $osp(1|2)$ is given in explicite closed form. The quantum coproducts and universal R-matrix are presented. The non-uniqueness of the twisting function as well as two real forms of the deformed $osp(1|2)$ superalgebras are considered. One real quantum $osp(1|2)$ superalgebra is interpreted as describing the $κ$-deformation of D=1, N=1 superconformal algebra, which can be applied as a symmetry algebra of N=1 superconformal mechanics.
We study quantum mechanical systems with $\mathfrak{osp}(4^{*}|4)$ superconformal symmetry. We classify unitary lowest-weight representations of this superconformal algebra and define an index which receives contributions from short and semi-short multiplets only. We consider the example of a quantum mechanical $σ$-model with hyper-Kähler target $\mathcal{M}$ equipped with a triholomorphic homothety. The superconformal index coincides with the Witten index of a novel form of supersymmetric quantum mechanics for a particle moving on $\mathcal{M}$ in a background magnetic field in which an unbro…
As is known, any realization of SU(2) in the phase space of a dynamical system can be generalized to accommodate the exceptional supergroup $D(2,1;α)$, which is the most general $\mathcal{N}{=}\,4$ supersymmetric extension of the conformal group in one spatial dimension. We construct novel spinning extensions of $D(2,1;α)$ superconformal mechanics by adjusting the SU(2) generators associated with the relativistic spinning particle coupled to a spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell background. The angular sector of the full superconformal system corresponds to the orbital motion of a particle …
Dynamical realizations of the most general N=4 superconformal group in one dimension D(2,1;a) are reconsidered from the perspective of the R-symmetry subgroup SU(2). It is shown that any realization of the R-symmetry subalgebra in some phase space can be extended to a representation of the Lie superalgebra corresponding to D(2,1;a). Novel couplings of arbitrary number of supermultiplets of the type (1,4,3) and (0,4,4) with a single supermultiplet of either the type (3,4,1), or (4,4,0) are constructed. D(2,1;a) superconformal mechanics describing superparticles propagating near the horizon of t…
We consider N=1,2 superconformal mechanics in 0+1 dimensions and show that if the Hamiltonian is invertible the superconformal generators can be used to construct half of the super Virasoro algebra. The full algebra can be derived if the special conformal generator is also invertible. The generators are quantized and a general prescription is given for the construction of the N=1 algebra independently of the specific details of the superconformal mechanics provided that in addition its quadratic Casimir operator vanishes.
We consider supersymmetric quantum mechanics on a Kähler cone, regulated via a suitable resolution of the conical singularity. The unresolved space has a $\mathfrak{u}(1,1|2)$ superconformal symmetry and we propose the existence of an associated quantum mechanical theory with a discrete spectrum consisting of unitary, lowest weight representations of this algebra. We define a corresponding superconformal index and compute it for a wide range of examples.
In the framework of nonlinear realizations we rederive the action of the N=2 SuperConformal Quantum Mechanics (SCQM). We propose also the WZNW -- like construction of the interaction term in the lagrangian with the help of Cartan's Omega forms.
This contribution to the proceedings of the 1999 NATO ASI on Quantum Geometry at Akureyri, Iceland, is based on notes of lectures given by A. Strominger. Topics include N-particle conformal quantum mechanics, extended superconformal quantum mechanics and multi-black hole moduli spaces.
In this paper we quantize superconformal $σ$-models defined by worldline supermultiplets. Two types of superconformal mechanics, with and without a DFF term, are considered. Without a DFF term (Calogero potential only) the supersymmetry is unbroken. The models with a DFF term correspond to deformed (if the Calogero potential is present) or undeformed oscillators. For these (un)deformed oscillators the classical invariant superconformal algebra acts as a spectrum-generating algebra of the quantum theory. Besides the $osp(1|2)$ examples, we explicitly quantize the superconformally-invariant worl…
We investigate the conformal and superconformal properties of a non-relativistic spinning particle propagating in a curved background coupled to a magnetic field and with a scalar potential. We derive the conditions on the couplings for a large class of such systems which are necessary in order their actions admit conformal and superconformal symmetry. We find that some of these conditions can be encoded in the conformal and holomorphic geometry of the background. Several new examples of conformal and superconformal models are also given.
We study the quantum mechanical sigma model arising in the discrete light-cone quantisation of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The target space is a certain torus fibration over a scale-invariant special Kahler manifold. We show that the expected SU(1,1|4) light-cone superconformal invariance of the N=4 theory emerges in a limit where the volume of the fibre goes to zero and give an explicit construction of the generators. The construction given here yields a large new family of superconformal quantum mechanical models with SU(1,1|4) invariance.
We explicitly construct a family of ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal mechanics of dyonic particles, generalizing the work of Anninos et al.\,\cite{Anninos:2013nra} to an arbitrary number of particles. These mechanics are obtained from a scaling limit of the effective Coulomb branch description of ${\mathcal N}=4$ quiver quantum mechanics describing D-branes in type II Calabi-Yau compactifications. In the supergravity description of these D-branes this limit changes the asymptotics to AdS$_2\times $S$^2\times$CY$_3$. We exhibit the $D(1,2;0)$ superconformal symmetry and conserved charges of the mech…
A representation of the conformal Newton-Hooke algebra on a phase space of n particles in arbitrary dimension which interact with one another via a generic conformal potential and experience a universal cosmological repulsion or attraction is constructed. The minimal N=2 superconformal extension of the Newton-Hooke algebra and its dynamical realization in many-body mechanics are studied.
We find, at the Lagrangian off-shell level, the explicit equivalence transformation which relates the conformal mechanics of De Alfaro, Fubini and Furlan to the conformal mechanics describing the radial motion of the charged massive particle in the Bertotti-Robinson AdS$_2\times S^2$ background. Thus we demonstrate the classical equivalence of these two systems which are usually regarded as essentially different ``old'' and ``new'' conformal mechanics models. We also construct a similar transformation for N=2, $SU(1,1|1)$ superconformal mechanics in N=2 superfield formulation. Performing this …
We constructed the pp-wave limit of N=4 superconformal mechanics with the off-shell $({\bf 3,4,1})$ multiplet. We present the superfield and the component actions which exhibit the interesting property that the interaction parts are completely fixed by the symmetry. We also explicitly demonstrate that the passing to the pp-wave limit can be achieved by keeping at most quadratic nonlinearities in the action of (super)conformal mechanics.
An action for a superconformal particle is constructed using the non linear realization method for the group PSU(1,1|2), without introducing superfields. The connection between PSU(1,1|2) and black hole physics is discussed. The lagrangian contains six arbitrary constants and describes a non-BPS superconformal particle. The BPS case is obtained if a precise relation between the constants in the lagrangian is verified, which implies that the action becomes kappa-symmetric.
We report on the new approach to constructing superconformal extensions of the Calogero-type systems with an arbitrary number of involved particles. It is based upon the superfield gauging of non-abelian isometries of some supersymmetric matrix models. Among its applications, we focus on the new N=4 superconformal system yielding the U(2) spin Calogero model in the bosonic sector, and the one-particle case of this system, which is a new OSp(4|2) superconformal mechanics with non-dynamical U(2) spin variables. The characteristic feature of these models is that the strength of the conformal inve…
Recently, Gaiotto, Strominger and Yin have proposed a holographic representation of the microstates of certain N=2 black holes as chiral primaries of a superconformal quantum mechanics living on D0-branes in the attractor geometry. We show that their proposal can be succesfully applied to `small' black holes which are dual to Dabholkar-Harvey states and have vanishing horizon area in the leading supergravity approximation. This note is a summary of hep-th/0505176 with S. Kim.
We present basics of the gauged superfield approach to constructing N-superconformal multi-particle Calogero-type systems developed in arXiv:0812.4276, arXiv:0905.4951 and arXiv:0912.3508. This approach is illustrated by the multi-particle systems possessing SU(1,1|1) and D(2,1;α) supersymmetries, as well as by the model of new N=4 superconformal quantum mechanics.
We construct new models of N=8 superconformal mechanics associated with the off-shell N=8, d=1 supermultiplets (3,8,5) and (5,8,3). These two multiplets are derived as N=8 Goldstone superfields and correspond to nonlinear realizations of the N=8, d=1 superconformal group OSp(4^*|4) in its supercosets OSp(4^*|4)/U(1)_R x SO(5) and OSp(4^*|4)/SU(2)_R x SO(4), respectively. The irreducibility constraints for these superfields automatically follow from appropriate superconformal covariant conditions on the Cartan superforms. The N=8 superconformal transformations of the superspace coordinates and …
Using an N=4, d=1 superfield approach, we construct an N=8 supersymmetric action of the self-interacting off-shell N=8 multiplet {\bf (1, 8, 7)}. This action is found to be invariant under the exceptional N=8, d=1 superconformal group F(4) with the R-symmetry subgroup SO(7). The general N=8 supersymmetric {\bf (1, 8, 7)} action is a sum of the superconformal action and the previously known free bilinear action. We show that the general action is also superconformal, but with respect to redefined superfield transformation laws. The scalar potential can be generated by two Fayet-Iliopoulos N=4 s…
By imposing global supersymmetry and scale invariance we construct an N=8 superconformal mechanical system based on the inhomogeneous (2,8,6) linear multiplet. The unique action describes a special K"ahler sigma model with a Calogero-type potential and Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. The classical dynamics of the two propagating bosons is restricted to a (warped) half-plane and bounded. We numerically inspect typical trajectories of this special particle.
The issue of constructing an N=4 superconformal mechanics in one dimension is reconsidered with a special emphasis put on the realizations of the su(2)-subalgebra in the full su(1,1|2)-superalgebra. New dynamical realizations of su(1,1|2) are constructed which describe an interaction of the (0,4,4)-supermultiplet with either the (1,4,3)-, or (3,4,1)-, or (4,4,0)-supermultiplet. A relation of the N=4 superconformal mechanics with massive superparticles propagating near the black hole horizons is discussed. Background geometry associated with the model based on the (4,4,0)-supermultiplet is iden…
A new superconformal mechanics with OSp(4|2) symmetry is obtained by gauging the U(1) isometry of a superfield model. It is the one-particle case of the new N=4 super Calogero model recently proposed in arXiv:0812.4276 [hep-th]. Classical and quantum generators of the osp(4|2) superalgebra are constructed on physical states. As opposed to other realizations of N=4 superconformal algebras, all supertranslation generators are linear in the odd variables, similarly to the N=2 case. The bosonic sector of the component action is standard one-particle (dilatonic) conformal mechanics accompanied by a…
We construct a three-dimensional superconformal quantum mechanics (and its associated de Alfaro-Fubini-Furlan deformed oscillator) possessing an $sl(2|1)$ dynamical symmetry. At a coupling parameter $β\neq 0$ the Hamiltonian contains a $\frac{1}{r^2}$ potential and a spin-orbit (hence, a first-order differential operator) interacting term. At $β=0$ four copies of undeformed three-dimensional oscillators are recovered. The Hamiltonian gets diagonalized in each sector of total $j$ and orbital $l$ angular momentum (the spin of the system is $\frac{1}{2}$). The Hilbert space of the deformed oscill…
We propose Lagrangian formulations of a three-particles translation invariant $N=4$ superconformal mechanics based on the standard and twisted $(1,4,3)$ supermultiplets. We show that in the appropriate set of coordinates, in which the bosonic kinetic terms for each of the two cases take conformally-flat forms, the corresponding models produce just similar physical systems with the flipped angular part of bosonic potential $U(x)\rightarrow 1/U(x)$. This flipping looks so simple only being written in the "angle" variable, while in the standard variables it looks more complicated to preserve the …
The complex nonperturbative color-confining dynamics of QCD is well captured in a semiclassical effective theory based on superconformal quantum mechanics and its extension to the light-front. I describe here how this new approach to hadron physics incorporates confinement, the appearance of nearly massless pseudoscalar particles, and Regge spectroscopy consistent with experiment. It also gives remarkable connections between the meson and baryon spectrum across the light and heavy-light hadron spectrum. I also briefly discuss how higher spin states are consistently described in this framework …
The dynamics of a (super)particle near the horizon of an extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is shown to be governed by an action that reduces to a (super)conformal mechanics model in the limit of large black hole mass.
In spacetime dimension two, pure Yang-Mills possesses no physical degrees of freedom, and consequently it admits a supersymmetric extension to couple to an arbitrary number, N say, of Majorana-Weyl gauginos. This results in (N,0) super Yang-Mills. Further, its dimensional reduction to mechanics doubles the number of supersymmetries, from N to N+N, to include conformal supercharges, and leads to a superconformal Yang-Mills quantum mechanics with symmetry group OSp(N|2,R). We comment on its connection to AdS_2 \times S^{N-1} and reduction to a supersymmetric Calogero model.
Proceeding from nonlinear realizations of (super)conformal symmetries, we explicitly demonstrate that adding the harmonic oscillator potential to the action of conformal mechanics does not break these symmetries but modifies the transformation properties of the (super)fields. We also analyze the possibility to introduce potentials in N=4 supersymmetric mechanics by coupling it with auxiliary fermionic superfields. The new coupling we considered does not introduce new fermionic degrees of freedom - all our additional fermions are purely auxiliary ones. The new bosonic components have a first or…
We construct a kappa-symmetric Green-Schwarz action for type IIA string theory on AdS_2. As a candidate holographic dual, we consider superconformal matrix quantum mechanics, given by the Marinari-Parisi model with vanishing or logarithmic superpotential. We derive that the super-eigenvalues form a consistent subsector, and that their dynamics reduces to that of the supersymmetric Calogero-Moser model. The classical string action and the matrix model both have an infinite set of conserved charges, that include an N=2 target space super-Virasoro symmetry. As a microscopic test of the duality, w…
We show the natural relation between the Wigner Hamiltonian and the conformal Hamiltonian. It is presented a model in (super)conformal quantum mechanics with (super)conformal symmetry in the Wigner-Heisenberg algebra picture $ [x,p_{x}]= i(1+c{\bf P})$ (${\bf P}$ being the parity operator). In this context, the energy spectrum, the Casimir operator, creation and annihilation operators are defined. This superconformal Hamiltonian is similar to the super-Hamiltonian of the Calogero model and it is also an extension of the super-Hamiltonian for the Dirac Oscillator.
The motion of a particle near the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole horizon is described by conformal mechanics. In this paper we present an extended one-dimensional analysis of the N=4 superconformal mechanics coupled to n copies of N=8, d=1 vector supermultiplets. The constructed system possesses a special Kahler geometry in the scalar sector of the vector multiplets as well as an N=4 superconformal symmetry which is provided by a proper coupling to a dilaton superfield. The superconformal symmetry completely fixes the resulting action. We explicitly demonstrate that the electric and magnetic ch…
Recently, Gaiotto, Strominger and Yin have proposed a holographic dual description for the near-horizon physics of certain N=2 black holes in terms of the superconformal quantum mechanics on D0-branes in the attractor geometry. We provide further evidence for their proposal by applying it to the case of `small' black holes which have vanishing horizon area in the leading supergravity approximation. We consider 2-charge black holes in type IIA on $T^2 \times M$, where $M$ can be either $K_3$ or $T^4$, made up out of D0-branes and D4-branes wrapping $M$. We construct the corresponding superconfo…
The dynamics of an N=4 spinning particle in a curved background is described using the N=4 superfield formalism. The $SU(2)_{local}\times SU(2)_{global}$ N=4 superconformal symmetry of the particle action requires the background to be a real "Kähler-like" manifold whose metric is generated by a sigma-model superpotential. The anti-de-Sitter spaces are shown to belong to this class of manifolds.
Proceeding from a nonlinear realization of the most general N=4, d=1 superconformal symmetry, associated with the supergroup D(2,1;alpha), we construct a new model of nonrelativistic N=4 superconformal mechanics. In the bosonic sector it combines the worldline dilaton with the fields parametrizing the R-symmetry coset S^2 ~ SU(2)/U(1). We present invariant off-shell N=4 and N=2 superfield actions for this system and show the existence of an independent N=4 superconformal invariant which extends the dilaton potential. The extended supersymmetry requires this potential to be accompanied by a d=1…
