We prove three results concerning convolution operators and lacunary maximal functions associated to dilates of measures. First, we obtain an $H^1$ to $L^{1,\infty}$ bound for lacunary maximal operators under a dimensional assumption on the underlying measure and an assumption on an $L^p$ regularity bound for some $p>1$. Secondly, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^2$ boundedness of lacunary maximal operator associated to averages over convex curves in the plane. Finally we prove an $L^p$ regularity result for such averages. We formulate various open problems.
Let $Ω$ be any set of directions (unit vectors) on the plane. We study maximal operators defined by \md0 M_Ωf(x)=\sup_{δ>0, ω\in Ω} \frac{1}{2δ}\int_{-δ}^δ|f(x+tω)|dt. \emd for the generalized lacunary sets $Ω$ associated with an integer $μ>0$. It is proved the following sharp inequality: $$ \|M_Ωf(x)\|_2\lesssim \sqrtμ \|f\|_2. $$
Let $Ω$ be any set of directions (unit vectors) on the plane. In this paper we study maximal operator of the one dimensional maximal function computed in the directions of $Ω$ We are interested in extensions of lacunary sets of directions, to collections we call $N$--lacunary, for integers $N$. We proceed by induction. Say that $Ω$ is 1--lacunary iff $Ω$ is an ordinary lacunary set of vectors. Every $N+1$--lacunary set can be obtained from some $N$--lacunary $Ω_N$ adding some points to $Ω_N$. Between each two neighbor points $a,b\inΩ_N$ we can add a 1--lacunary sequence (finite or infinite). W…
If mu is a smooth density on a hypersurface in R^d whose curvature never vanishes to infinite order, and A is a d-by-d matrix whose eigenvalues all have absolute value greater than 1, then the maximal function given by convolving f with dilates of mu by powers of A, and taking the maximum, is bounded from a corresponding version of H^1 to weak L^1.
We obtain positive and negative results concerning lacunary discrete maximal operators defined by dilations of sufficiently nonsingular hypersurfaces arising from Diophantine equations in many variables. Our negative results show that this problem differs substantially from that of lacunary discrete maximal operators defined along a nonsingular hypersurface. Our positive results are improvements over bounds for the corresponding full maximal functions which were initially studied by Magyar. In order to obtain positive results, we use an interpolation technique of the second author to reduce pr…
In this paper we investigate the $L^p$ boundedness of the lacunary maximal function $ M_{\Ha}^{lac} $ associated to the spherical means $ A_r f$ taken over Koranyi spheres on the Heisenberg group. Closely following an approach used by M. Lacey in the Euclidean case, we obtain sparse bounds for these maximal functions leading to new unweighted and weighted estimates. The key ingredients in the proof are the $L^p$ improving property of the operator $A_rf$ and a continuity property of the difference $A_rf-τ_y A_rf$, where $τ_yf(x)=f(xy^{-1})$ is the right translation operator.
We prove new $\ell ^{p} (\mathbb Z ^{d})$ bounds for discrete spherical averages in dimensions $ d \geq 5$. We focus on the case of lacunary radii, first for general lacunary radii, and then for certain kinds of highly composite choices of radii. In particular, if $ A _{λ} f $ is the spherical average of $ f$ over the discrete sphere of radius $ λ$, we have \begin{equation*} \bigl\lVert \sup _{k} \lvert A _{λ_k} f \rvert \bigr\rVert _{\ell ^{p} (\mathbb Z ^{d})} \lesssim \lVert f\rVert _{\ell ^{p} (\mathbb Z ^{d})}, \qquad \tfrac{d-2} {d-3} < p \leq \tfrac{d} {d-2},\ d\geq 5, \end{equation*} f…
Let $H_k$ be the one dimensional Hilbert transform computed in the direction $(1,2^k)$ in the plane. We show that the maximal operator $\sup_k |H_kf|$ maps $L^p$ of the plane into itself for $1<p<\infty$. The same result with the Hilbert transform replaced by the one dimensional maximal function was proved by Nagel, Stein and Wainger in 1978.
In this paper we deal with lacunary and full versions of the spherical maximal function on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$, for $n\ge 2$. By suitable adaptation of an approach developed by M. Lacey in the Euclidean case, we obtain sparse bounds for these maximal functions, which lead to new unweighted and weighted estimates. In particular, we deduce the $L^p$ boundedness, for $1<p<\infty$, of the lacunary maximal function associated to the spherical means on the Heisenberg group. In order to prove the sparse bounds, we establish $ L^p-L^q $ estimates for local (single scale) variants of th…
We show that the discrete lacunary spherical maximal function is bounded on $l^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ for all $p >\frac{d+1}{d-1}$. Our range is new in dimension 4, where it appears that little was previously known for general lacunary radii. Our technique follows that of Kesler-Lacey-Mena, using the Kloosterman refinement to improve the estimates in several places, which leads to an overall improvement in dimension 4.
We prove endpoint bounds for derivatives of fractional maximal functions with either smooth convolution kernel or lacunary set of radii in dimensions $n \geq 2$. We also show that the spherical fractional maximal function maps $L^{p}$ into a first order Sobolev space in dimensions $n \geq 5$.
We prove a weighted inequality which controls conic Fourier multiplier operators in terms of lacunary directional maximal operators. By bounding the maximal operators, this enables us to conclude that the multiplier operators are bounded on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with $1<p<\infty$.
In this paper we introduce and study a bilinear spherical maximal function of product type in the spirit of bilinear Calderón-Zygmund theory. This operator is different from the bilinear spherical maximal function considered by Geba et al. We deal with lacunary and full versions of this operator, and we prove weighted estimates with respect to bilinear weights. Our approach involves sparse forms following ideas by Lacey, but we also use other techniques to handle the particular triplet $(2,2,1)$.
We introduce the notion of \textit{Perron capacity} of a set of slopes $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}$. Precisely, we prove that if the Perron capacity of $Ω$ is finite then the directional maximal operator associated $M_Ω$ is not bounded on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for any $1 < p < \infty$. This allows us to prove that the set $$Ω_{ \boldsymbol{e}} =\left\{ \frac{\cos n}{n}: n\in \mathbb{N}^* \right\}$$ is not finitely lacunary which answers a question raised by A. Stokolos.
We discuss the L^p-boundedness of maximal singular integrals in the plane over a finite set V of N directions. Logarithmic bounds are established for a set V of arbitrary structure in the 2<=p<infinity range. Sharp bounds are proved for lacunary and Vargas sets of directions. The latter include the case of uniformly distributed directions and the finite truncations of the Cantor set. We make use of both classical harmonic analysis methods and product-BMO based time-frequency analysis techniques. As a further application of the latter, we derive an L^p almost orthogonality principle for Fourier…
We prove $L^p\to L^q$ estimates for the local maximal operator associated with dilates of the Kóranyi sphere in Heisenberg groups. These estimates are sharp up to endpoints and imply new bounds on sparse domination for the corresponding global maximal operator. We also prove sharp $L^p\to L^q$ estimates for spherical means over the Korányi sphere, which can be used to improve the sparse domination bounds for the associated lacunary maximal operator.
We consider the averages of a function $ f$ on $ \mathbb R ^{n}$ over spheres of radius $ 0< r< \infty $ given by $ A_{r} f (x) = \int_{\mathbb S ^{n-1}} f (x-r y) \; d σ(y)$, where $ σ$ is the normalized rotation invariant measure on $ \mathbb S ^{n-1}$. We prove a sharp range of sparse bounds for two maximal functions, the first the lacunary spherical maximal function, and the second the full maximal function. $$ M_{lac} f = \sup_{j\in \mathbb Z } A_{2^j} f , \qquad M_{full} f = \sup_{ r>0 } A_{r} f . $$ The sparse bounds are very precise variants of the known $L^p$ bounds for these maximal …
In this work we obtain the pointwise almost everywhere convergence for two families of multilinear operators: (a) truncated homogeneous singular integral operators associated with $L^q$ functions on the sphere and (b) lacunary multiplier operators of limited decay. The a.e. convergence is deduced from the $L^2\times\cdots\times L^2\to L^{2/m}$ boundedness of the associated maximal multilinear operators.

We prove L2 x L2 to weak L1 estimates for some novel bilinear maximal operators of Kakeya and lacunary type thus extending to this setting, the works of Cordoba and of Nagel, Stein and Wainger.
We completely characterize the boundedness of planar directional maximal operators on L^p. More precisely, if Omega is a set of directions, we show that M_Omega, the maximal operator associated to line segments in the directions Omega, is unbounded on L^p, for all p < infinity, precisely when Omega admits Kakeya-type sets. In fact, we show that if Omega does not admit Kakeya sets, then Omega is a generalized lacunary set, and hence M_Omega is bounded on L^p, for p>1.
Consider the discrete maximal function acting on finitely supported functions on the integers, \[ \mathcal{C}_Λf(n) := \sup_{λ\in Λ} | \sum_{p \in \pm \mathbb{P}} f(n-p) \log |p| \frac{e^{2πi λp}}{p} |,\] where $\pm \mathbb{P} := \{ \pm p : p \text{ is a prime} \}$, and $Λ\subset [0,1]$. We give sufficient conditions on $Λ$, met by (finite unions of) lacunary sets, for this to be a bounded sublinear operator on $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z})$ for $\frac{3}{2} < p < 4$.
By a classical result of Weyl, for any increasing sequence $(n_k)_{k \geq 1}$ of integers the sequence of fractional parts $(\{n_k x\})_{k \geq 1}$ is uniformly distributed modulo 1 for almost all $x \in [0,1]$. Except for a few special cases, e.g. when $n_k=k, k \geq 1$, the exceptional set cannot be described explicitly. The exact asymptotic order of the discrepancy of $(\{n_k x\})_{k \geq 1}$ is only known in a few special cases, for example when $(n_k)_{k \geq 1}$ is a (Hadamard) lacunary sequence, that is when $n_{k+1}/n_k \geq q > 1, k \geq 1$. In this case of quickly increasing $(n_k)_{…

In this paper, we use the Approximation Formula for the Fourier transform of the solution set of lattice points on k-spheres and methods of Bourgain and Ionescu to refine the l^p(Z^d)-boundedness results for discrete k- spherical maximal functions to a restricted weak-type result at the endpoint. Moreover we introduce a novel Approximation Formula for a single average; this allows us to improve our bounds for discrete k-spherical maximal functions along sparse subsequences of radii by exploiting recent progress of Wooley on the Vinogradov mean value conjectures. In particular we have improved …
We provide a near-complete classification of the Lorentz spaces $Λ_φ$ for which the sequence $\{S_{n}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of partial Fourier sums is almost everywhere convergent along lacunary subsequences. Moreover, under mild assumptions on the fundamental function $φ$, we identify $Λ_φ:= L\log\log L\log\log\log\log L$ as the \emph{largest} Lorentz space on which the lacunary Carleson operator is bounded as a map to $L^{1,\infty}$. In particular, we disprove a conjecture stated by Konyagin in his 2006 ICM address. Our proof relies on a newly introduced concept of a "Cantor Multi-tower Embed…
We initiate the study of the $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$-boundedness of the arithmetic spherical maximal function over sparse sequences. We state a folklore conjecture for lacunary sequences, a key example of Zienkiewicz and prove new bounds for a family of sparse sequences that achieves the endpoint of the Magyar--Stein--Wainger theorem for the full discrete spherical maximal function. Perhaps our most interesting result is the boundedness of a discrete spherical maximal function in $\mathbb{Z}^4$ over an infinite, albeit sparse, set of radii. Our methods include the Kloosterman refinement for the…
In this paper we consider weighted Morrey spaces ${\mathcal M}_{λ, {\mathcal F}}^p(w)$ adapted to a family of cubes ${\mathcal F}$, with norm $$\|f\|_{{\mathcal M}_{λ, {\mathcal F}}^p(w)}:=\sup_{Q\in {\mathcal F}}\left(\frac{1}{|Q|^λ}\int_Q|f|^pw\right)^{1/p},$$ and the question we deal with is whether a Muckenhoupt-type condition characterizes the boundedness of the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator on ${\mathcal M}_{λ, {\mathcal F}}^p(w)$. In the case of the global Morrey spaces (when ${\mathcal F}$ is the family of all cubes in ${\mathbb R}^n$) this question is still open. In the case of t…
Using variants of the TT* method we give a self-contained proof of the result of Alfonseca, Soria and Vargas on maximal operators on arbitrary directions in $\rr^2$. We also give a sharp $L^2$ estimate for a maximal function extending a Theorem of Cordoba.
We prove (essentially) sharp $L^2$ estimates for a restricted maximal operator associated to a planar vector field that depends only on the horizontal variable. The proof combines an understanding of such vector fields from earlier work of the author with a result of Nets Katz on directional maximal operators.
Let $M$ be the maximal operator associated to a smooth curve in $\mathbb R^3$ which has nonvanishing curvature and torsion. We prove that $M$ is bounded on $L^p$ if and only if $p>3$.
We study both averaging and maximal averaging problems for Product $j$-varieties defined by $Π_j=\{x\in \mathbb F_q^d: \prod_{k=1}^d x_k=j\}$ for $j\in \mathbb F_q^*,$ where $\mathbb F_q^d$ denotes a $d$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$ with $q$ elements. We prove the sharp $L^p\to L^r$ boundedness of averaging operators associated to Product $j$-varieties. We also obtain the optimal $L^p$ estimate for a maximal averaging operator related to a family of Product $j$-varieties $\{Π_j\}_{j\in \mathbb F_q^*}.$
We exhibit a range of $\ell ^{p}(\mathbb{Z}^d)$-improving properties for the discrete spherical maximal average in every dimension $d\geq 5$. The strategy used to show these improving properties is then adapted to establish sparse bounds, which extend the discrete maximal theorem of Magyar, Stein, and Wainger to weighted spaces. In particular, the sparse bounds imply that the discrete spherical maximal average is a bounded map from $\ell^2(w)$ into $\ell^2(w)$ provided $w^{\frac{d}{d-4}+δ}$ belongs to the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$ for some $δ>0.$
We prove $L^p(w)$ bounds for the Carleson operator ${\mathcal C}$, its lacunary version $\mathcal C_{lac}$, and its analogue for the Walsh series $\W$ in terms of the $A_q$ constants $[w]_{A_q}$ for $1\le q\le p$. In particular, we show that, exactly as for the Hilbert transform, $\|{\mathcal C}\|_{L^p(w)}$ is bounded linearly by $[w]_{A_q}$ for $1\le q<p$. We also obtain $L^p(w)$ bounds in terms of $[w]_{A_p}$, whose sharpness is related to certain conjectures (for instance, of Konyagin \cite{K2}) on pointwise convergence of Fourier series for functions near $L^1$. Our approach works in the g…
