That static electric and magnetic fields can store momentum may be perplexing, but is necessary to ensure total conservation of momentum. Simple situations in which such field momentum is transferred to nearby bodies and point charges have often been considered for pedagogical purposes, normally assuming vacuum surroundings. If dielectric media are involved, however, the analysis becomes more delicate, not least since one encounters the electromagnetic energy-momentum problem in matter, the `Abraham-Minkowski enigma', of what the momentum is of a photon in matter. We analyze the momentum balance in three nontrivial examples obeying azimuthal symmetry, showing how the momentum conservation is satisfied as the magnetic field decays and momentum is transferred to bodies present. In the last of the examples, that of point charge outside a dielectric sphere in an infinite magnetic field, we find that not all of the field momentum is transferred to the nearby bodies; a part of the momentum appears to vanish as momentum flux towards infinity. We discuss this and other surprising observations which can be attributed to the assumption of magnetic fields of infinite extent. We emphasize how formal arguments of conserved quantities cannot determine which energy-momentum tensor is more "correct", and each of our conservation checks may be performed equally well in the Minkowski or Abraham framework.
The form of the energy-momentum tensor when a quasimonochromatic field propagates into and through an antireflection-coated, sourceless, transparent, continuous, linear magneto-dielectric medium, initially at rest in the local frame, remains controversial. The Minkowski energy-momentum tensor is the main component of the electromagnetic conservation law. It has been known for over a century that the electromagnetic conservation law is unsound as evidenced by alternative energy-momentum tensors that have been proposed to ameliorate known physical deficiencies (violation of conservation of angul…
It is shown that violation of the Born Rule leads to a breakdown of the correspondence between the quantum electromagnetic field and its classical counterpart. Specifically, the relationship of the quantum coherent state to the classical electromagnetic field turns out to imply that if the Born Rule were violated, this could result in apparent deviations from the energy conservation law applying to the field and its sources (Poynting's Theorem). The result suggests that the Born Rule is just as fundamental a law of Nature as are the conservation laws.

The Abraham--Minkowski controversy refers to a long-standing inability to adequately address certain issues involving the conservation of the momentum of an electromagnetic field in a linear dielectric medium. We apply the usual assumption of a material subsystem that couples to the electromagnetic subsystem such that the total energy and total momentum are conserved. We then construct the total energy--momentum tensor from the total energy density and the total momentum density. Applying conservation principles to the total energy--momentum tensor, we construct the tensor energy--momentum con…
It is shown that the zilch conservation law arises as the Noether current corresponding to a variational symmetry of a duality-symmetric Maxwell Lagrangian. The action of the corresponding symmetry generator on the duality-symmetric Lagrangian, while non-vanishing, is a total divergence as required by the Noether theory. The variational nature of the zilch conservation law was previously known only for some of the components of the zilch tensor, notably the optical chirality. By contrast, our analysis is fully covariant and is therefore valid for all components of the zilch tensor. The analysi…
Time-varying media break temporal symmetries while preserving spatial symmetries intact. Thus, it represents an excellent conceptual framework to investigate the fundamental implications of Noether's theorem for the electromagnetic field. At the same time, addressing momentum conservation in time-varying media sheds light on the Abraham-Minkowski debate, where two opposing forms of the electromagnetic field momentum are defended. Here, we present a tutorial review on the conservation of momentum in time-varying media. We demonstrate that the Minkowski momentum is a conserved quantity with thre…
A low loss propagating electromagnetic wave is shown to exist at a gradual interface between two lossy conductive media. The electromagnetic frequency range of this phenomenon may span from UV optics to RF range. In particular, it is demonstrated that such a surface wave may be guided by a seafloor-seawater interface and it may be used in radio communication and imaging underwater. Similar surface waves may also be guided by various tissue boundaries inside a human body. For example, such surface wave solutions may exist at planar interfaces between skull bones and grey matter inside a human h…
It is well known that optical media create artificial geometry for light, and curved geometry acts as an effective optical medium. This correspondence originates from the form invariance of Maxwells equations, which recently has spawned a booming field called transformation optics. Here we investigate responses of three transformation media under electromagnetic pulses, and find that pulse radiation can induce unbalanced net force on transformation media, which will cause translation and rotation of transformation media although their final momentum can still be zero. Therefore, the transforma…

Optical helicity density is usually discussed for monochromatic electromagnetic fields in free space. It plays an important role in the interaction with chiral molecules or nanoparticles. Here we introduce the optical helicity density in a dispersive isotropic medium. Our definition is consistent with biorthogonal Maxwell electromagnetism in optical media, the Brillouin energy density, as well as with the recently-introduced canonical momentum and spin of light in dispersive media. We consider a number of examples, including electromagnetic waves in dielectrics, negative-index materials, and m…

We report on new electromagnetic modes in space-time modulated dispersion-engineered media. These modes exhibit unusual dispersion relation, field profile and scattering properties. They are generated by coupled codirectional space-time harmonic pairs, and occur in space-time periodic media whose constituent materials exhibit specific dispersion. Excitation of a slab of such a medium with subluminal modulation results in periodic transfer of energy between the incident frequency and a frequency shifted by a multiple of the modulation frequency, whereas superluminal modulation generates exponen…
Potential-based formulation with generalized Lorenz gauge can be used in the quantization of electromagnetic fields in inhomogeneous media. However, one often faces the redundancy of modes when finding eigenmodes from potential-based formulation. In free space, this can be explained by the connection to the well-known Helmholtz decomposition. In this work, we generalize the Helmholtz decomposition to its generalized form, echoing the use of generalized Lorenz gauge in inhomogeneous media. We formulate electromagnetics eigenvalue problems using vector potential formulation which is often used i…
Controlling the electromagnetic helicity and directionality of the light scattered by dielectric particles is paramount to a variety of phenomenology of interest in all-dielectric optics and photonics. In this Letter, we show that the conservation of the electromagnetic helicity in the scattering by high-index dielectric Mie spheres can be used as a probe of pure-multipolar spectral regions, particularly, of dipolar nature, beyond its presumed spectral interval. This finding reveals that the dipolar behavior is not necessarily limited to small particles, in striking contrast to the current sta…
The spectral response of a plasmonic nanostructure may heavily depend on the refractive index of its surroundings. The key idea of this paper is to control this response by coherent optical means, i.e. with an optically controlled electromagnetically-induced-transparency medium. In such environment, an external laser provides a knob to shift the position of plasmonic resonances without the need to change the geometry of the nanostructure. Additionally, the setup can be exploited to excite narrow-band surface plasmon polaritons.
We analyse wave propagation in two-dimensional bianisotropic media with the Finite Element Method (FEM). We start from the Maxwell-Tellegen's equations in bianisotropic media, and derive some system of coupled Partial Difference Equations (PDEs) for longitudinal electric and magnetic field components. Perfectly Matched Layers (PMLs) are discussed to model such unbounded media. We implement these PDEs and PMLs in a finite element software. We apply transformation optics in order to design some bianisotropic media with interesting functionalities, such as cloaks, concentrators and rotators. We p…
There are various formulations of energy--momentum tensors for an electromagnetic field in a linear dielectric. The total energy--momentum tensor, comprised of electromagnetic and material components, must be unique. We discuss the construction of the total energy--momentum tensor and the associated conservation laws.
Interconnection of alternative equations of conservation of the momentum related with different interpretations of equations of the electromagnetic field is an essential aspect of the Abraham-Minkowski controversy, which is associated in the first place with rivalry of alternative definitions of optical momentum of the electromagnetic wave in a medium. Assuming significance of alternative equations of momentum conservation in accord with their interconnection, potential functional equivalence of alternative descriptions of optical momentum is examined in the context of the radiation pressure. …
Frequency upconversion of an electromagnetic wave can occur in ionized plasma with decreasing electric permittivity and in split-ring resonator-structure metamaterials with decreasing magnetic permeability. We develop a general theory to describe the evolution of the wave frequency, amplitude, and energy density in homogeneous media with a temporally decreasing refractive index. We find that upconversion of the wave frequency is necessarily accompanied by partitioning of the wave energy into low-frequency modes, which sets an upper limit on the energy conversion efficiency. The efficiency limi…
Light with spatiotemporal orbital angular momentum (ST-OAM) is a recently discovered type of structured and localized electromagnetic field. This field carries characteristic space-time spiral phase structure and transverse intrinsic OAM. In this work, we present the generation and characterization of the second-harmonic of ST-OAM pulses. We uncovered the conservation of transverse OAM in a second-harmonic generation process, where the space-time topological charge of the fundamental field is doubled along with the optical frequency. Our experiment thus suggests a general ST-OAM nonlinear scal…
We propose a general method to arbitrarily manipulate an electromagnetic wave propagating in a two-dimensional medium, without introducing any scattering. This leads to a whole class of isotropic spatially varying permittivity and permeability profiles that are invisible while shaping the field magnitude and/or phase. In addition, we propose a metamaterial structure working in the infrared that demonstrates deep sub-wavelength control of the electric field amplitude and strong reduction of the scattering. This work offers an alternative strategy to achieve invisibility with isotropic materials…
