An Integrodifferential Equation for Electromagnetic Fields in Linear Dispersive Media

We extend the usual derivation of the wave equation from Maxwell's equations in vacuum to the case of electromagnetic fields in dispersive homogeneous isotropic linear media. Usually, dispersive properties of materials are studied in Fourier space. However, it can be rewarding to consider these properties as causal functions of time. Due to temporal non locality, this procedure gives rise to an integrodifferential equation for the electromagnetic fields, which we also call a wave equation. We have not found this equation in the literature and we show in this paper why it can be useful.

Radiation pressure and the linear momentum of light in dispersive dielectric media

We derive an exact expression for the radiation pressure of a quasi- monochromatic plane wave incident from the free space onto the flat surface of a semi-infinite dielectric medium. In order to account for the total optical momentum (incident plus reflected) that is transferred to the dielectric, the mechanical momentum acquired by the medium must be added to the rate of flow of the electromagnetic momentum (the so-called Abraham momentum) inside the dielectric. In this paper we set forth new exact analytical Superluminal localized solutions to the wave equation for arbitrary frequencies and adjustable bandwidth. The formulation presented here is rather simple, and its results can be expressed in terms of the ordinary, so-called "X-shaped waves". We develop a Hamiltonian theory for a time dispersive and dissipative (TDD) inhomogeneous medium, as described by a linear response equation respecting causality and power dissipation. The canonical Hamiltonian constructed here exactly reproduces the original dissipative evolution after integrating out auxiliary fields.
