Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves in Linear Media and Pseudo-Hermiticity

We express the electromagnetic field propagating in an arbitrary time-independent non-dispersive medium in terms of an operator that turns out to be pseudo-Hermitian for Hermitian dielectric and magnetic permeability tensors Epsilon and Mu. We exploit this property to determine the propagating field. In particular, we obtain an explicit expression for a planar field in an isotropic medium with Epsilon and Mu varying along the direction of the propagation. We also study the scattering of plane waves due to a localized inhomogeneity.

Unitary Scattering Protected by Pseudo-Hermiticity

The Hermitian systems possess unitary scattering; however, the Hermiticity is unnecessary for a unitary scattering although the scattering under the influence of non-Hermiticity is mostly non-unitary. Here we prove that the unitary scattering is protected by certain type of pseudo-Hermiticity and unaffected by the degree of non-Hermiticity. Exceptional points and pseudo-Hermiticity in real potential scattering

We employ a recently-developed transfer-matrix formulation of scattering theory in two dimensions to study a class of scattering setups modeled by real potentials. Pseudo-Hermitian Transition in Degenerate Nonlinear Four-Wave Mixing

We show that degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) in nonlinear optics can be described by an effective Hamiltonian that is pseudo-Hermitian, which enables a transition between a pseudo-Hermitian phase with real eigenvalues and a broken pseudo-Hermitian phase with complex conjugate eigenvalues. Higher-order exceptional point in a cavity magnonics system

We propose to realize the pseudo-Hermiticity in a cavity magnonics system consisting of the Kittel modes in two small yttrium-iron-garnet spheres coupled to a microwave cavity mode. Real spectra in non-Hermitian topological insulators

Spectra of bulk or edges in topological insulators are often made complex by non-Hermiticity. Here, we show that symmetry protection enables entirely real spectra for both bulk and edges even in non-Hermitian topological insulators. In particular, we demonstrate entirely real spectra without non-Hermitian skin effects due to a combination of pseudo-Hermiticity and Kramers degeneracy. Pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians Generating Waveguide Mode Evolution

We study the properties of Hamiltonians defined as the generators of transfer matrices in quasi- one-dimensional waveguides. For single- or multi-mode waveguides obeying flux conservation and time-reversal invariance, the Hamiltonians defined in this way are non-Hermitian, but satisfy symmetry properties that have previously been identified in the literature as "pseudo Hermiticity" and "anti-PT symmetry". We show how simple one-channel and two-channel models exhibit transitions between real, imaginary, and complex eigenvalue pairs.

Symmetry and Topology in Non-Hermitian Physics

We develop a complete theory of symmetry and topology in non-Hermitian physics. We demonstrate that non-Hermiticity ramifies the celebrated Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classification for insulators and superconductors. Light scattering in pseudo-passive media with uniformly balanced gain and loss

We introduce a class of metamaterials with uniformly balanced gain and loss associated with complex permittivity and permeability constants. The refractive index of such a balanced pseudo-passive metamaterial is real. An unbounded uniform pseudo-passive medium has transport characteristics similar to those of its truly passive and lossless counterpart with the same real refractive index. However, bounded pseudo-passive samples show some unexpected scattering features which can be further emphasized by including such elements in a photonic structure.
