Quantum-mechanical WKB-method is elaborated for the known quantum oscillator problem in curved 3-spaces models Euclid, Riemann, and Lobachevsky E_{3}, H_{3}, S_{3} in the framework of the complex variable function theory. Generalized generally covariant Schrödinger equation is considered. In all three space models, exact energy levels are found with the help of constructing special formal WKB-sieries.
For translationally shape invariant potentials, the exact quantization rule proposed by Ma and Xu is a direct consequence of exactness of the modified WKB quantization condition proved by Barclay. We propose here a very direct alternative way to calculate the appropriate correction for the whole class of translationally shape invariant potentials.
We introduce a method for calculating the joint spectra of functions which comprise a quantum integrable system under a deformation quantization star product. The main result involves a construction by formal power series in h-bar of s'Darboux coordinates, a concept we introduce for the star product analogue of Darboux normal coordinates. We will find that underlying the quantum integrable system is a set of s'Darboux coordinates which in turn gives rise to number operators for the system. We present an explicit correction to the lowest order Bohr-Sommerfeld or EBK quantization rule.
There are two well-known approaches to studying nonperturbative aspects of quantum mechanical systems: Saddle point analysis of the partition functions in Euclidean path integral formulation and the exact-WKB analysis based on the wave functions in the Schrödinger equation. In this work, based on the quantization conditions obtained from the exact-WKB method, we determine the relations between the two formalism and in particular show how the two Stokes phenomena are connected to each other: the Stokes phenomenon leading to the ambiguous contribution of different sectors of the path integral fo…
Poles of solutions to the Painleve-I equation are intimately related to the theory of the cubic anharmonic oscillator. In particular, poles of integrale tritronquee are in 1-1 correspondence with cubic oscillators that admit the simultaneous solutions of two quantization conditions. We analyze this pair of quantization conditions by means of a suitable version of the complex WKB method.
A well-motivated conjecture states that the open topological string partition function on toric geometries in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit is annihilated by a difference operator called the quantum mirror curve. Recently, the complex structure variables parameterizing the curve, which play the role of eigenvalues for related operators, were conjectured to satisfy a quantization condition non-perturbative in the NS parameter $\hbar$. Here, we argue that this quantization condition arises from requiring single-valuedness of the partition function, combined with the requirement of smoothness in…
The exactness of the semiclassical method for three-dimensional problems in quantum mechanics is analyzed. The wave equation appropriate in the quasiclassical region is derived. It is shown that application of the standard leading-order WKB quantization condition to this equation reproduces exact energy eigenvalues for all solvable spherically symmetric potentials.
Poles of integrale tritronquee are in bijection with cubic oscillators that admit the simultaneous solutions of two quantization conditions. We show that the poles lie near the solutions of a pair of Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization conditions (the Bohr-Sommerfeld-Boutroux system): the distance between a pole and the corresponding solution of the Bohr-Sommerfeld-Boutroux system vanishes asymptotically.
The Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) perturbative series, a widely used technique for solving linear waves, is typically divergent and at best, asymptotic, thus impeding predictions beyond the first few leading-order effects. Here, we report a closed-form formula that exactly resums the perturbative WKB series to all-orders for two turning point problem. The formula is elegantly interpreted as the action evaluated using the product of spatially-varying wavenumber and a coefficient related to the wave transmissivity; unit transmissivity yields the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization.
An exact WKB treatment of 1-d homogeneous Schrödinger operators (with the confining potentials $q^N$, $N$ even) is extended to odd degrees $N$. The resulting formalism is first illustrated theoretically and numerically upon the spectrum of the cubic oscillator (potential $|q|^3$). Concerning the linear potential (N=1), the theory exhibits a duality in which the Airy functions Ai, Ai' become paired with the spectral determinants of the quartic oscillator (N=4). Classic identities for the Airy function, as well as some less familiar ones, appear in this new perspective as special cases in a gene…
Following earlier studies, several new features of singular perturbation theory for one-dimensional quantum anharmonic oscillators are computed by exact WKB analysis; former results are thus validated.
Based on previous insights, we present an ansatz to obtain quantization conditions and eigenfunctions for a family of difference equations which arise from quantized mirror curves in the context of local mirror symmetry of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. It is a first principles construction, which yields closed expressions for the quantization conditions and the eigenfunctions when $\hbar/2π\in \mathbb Q$. The key ingredient is the modular duality structure of the underlying quantum integrable system. We use our ansatz to write down explicit results in some examples, which are successfully check…
It has been recently realized that, in the case of polynomial potentials, the exact WKB method can be reformulated in terms of a system of TBA equations. In this paper we study this method in various examples. We develop a graphical procedure due to Toledo, which provides a fast and simple way to study the wall-crossing behavior of the TBA equations. When complemented with exact quantization conditions, the TBA equations can be used to solve spectral problems exactly in Quantum Mechanics. We compute the quantum corrections to the all-order WKB periods in many examples, as well as the exact spe…
We review an exact analytical resolution method for general one-dimensional (1D) quantal anharmonic oscillators: stationary Schrödinger equations with polynomial potentials. It is an exact form of WKB treatment involving spectral (usual) vs "classical" (newer) zeta-regularisations in parallel. The central results are a set of Bohr--Sommerfeld-like but exact quantisation conditions, directly drawn from Wronskian identities, and appearing to extend Bethe-Ansatz formulae of integrable systems. Such exact quantisation conditions do not just select the eigenvalues; some evaluate the spectral determ…
The Hamiltonian of the harmonic oscillator is usually defined as a differential operator, but an integral representation can be obtained by using the coherent state quantization. The finite frame quantization is a finite counterpart of the coherent state quantization and it allows us to define a finite oscillator by starting from the integral representation of the harmonic oscillator. Our purpose is to investigate the oscillator obtained in this way, and to present a possible application to the discrete fractional Fourier transform.
Quantum curves were introduced in the physics literature. We develop a mathematical framework for the case associated with Hitchin spectral curves. In this context, a quantum curve is a Rees $\mathcal{D}$-module on a smooth projective algebraic curve, whose semi-classical limit produces the Hitchin spectral curve of a Higgs bundle. We give a method of quantization of Hitchin spectral curves by concretely constructing one-parameter deformation families of opers. We propose a variant of the topological recursion of Eynard--Orantin and Mirzakhani for the context of singular Hitchin spectral curve…
The classical quantization of a Lienard-type nonlinear oscillator is achieved by a quantization scheme (M.C. Nucci. Theor. Math. Phys., 168:997--1004, 2011) that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schrödinger equation. This method straightforwardly yields the correct Schrödinger equation in the momentum space (V. Chithiika Ruby, M. Senthilvelan, and M. Lakshmanan. J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., 45:382002, 2012), and sheds light into the apparently remarkable connection with the linear harmonic oscillator.
We apply the Born-Jordan and Weyl quantization formulas for polynomials in canonical coordinates to the constants of motion of some examples of the superintegrable 2D anisotropic harmonic oscillator. Our aim is to study the behaviour of the algebra of the constants of motion after the different quantization procedures. In the examples considered, we have that the Weyl formula always preserves the original superintegrable structure of the system, while the Born-Jordan formula, when producing different operators than the Weyl's one, does not.
We revisit in this Note the well known Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule (BS) for 1-D Pseudo-differential self-adjoint Hamiltonians within the algebraic and microlocal framework of Helffer and Sjöstrand; BS holds precisely when the Gram matrix consisting of scalar products of WKB solutions with respect to the "flux norm" is not invertible.
We study a spectral problem associated to the quantization of a spectral curve arising in local mirror symmetry. The perturbative WKB quantization condition is determined by the quantum periods, or equivalently by the refined topological string in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit. We show that the information encoded in the quantum periods is radically insufficient to determine the spectrum: there is an infinite series of instanton corrections, which are non-perturbative in \hbar, and lead to an exact WKB quantization condition. Moreover, we conjecture the precise form of the instanton corr…
A recent paper [J. Math. Phys. {\bf 59}, 082105 (2018)] constructs a Hamiltonian for the (dissipative) damped harmonic oscillator. We point out that non-Hermiticity of this Hamiltonian has been ignored to find real discrete eigenvalues which are actually non-real. We emphasize that non-Hermiticity in Hamiltonian is crucial and it is a quantal signature of dissipation.
We return to the description of the damped harmonic oscillator by means of a closed quantum theory with a general assessment of previous works, in particular the Bateman-Caldirola-Kanai model and a new model recently proposed by one of the authors. We show the local equivalence between the two models and argue that latter has better high energy behavior and is naturally connected to existing open-quantum-systems approaches.
We show that the all-orders WKB periods of one-dimensional quantum mechanical oscillators are governed by the refined holomorphic anomaly equations of topological string theory. We analyze in detail the double-well potential and the cubic and quartic oscillators, and we calculate the WKB expansion of their quantum free energies by using the direct integration of the anomaly equations. We reproduce in this way all known results about the quantum periods of these models, which we express in terms of modular forms on the WKB curve. As an application of our results, we study the large order behavi…
The conditions that must be fulfilled by a certain physical system to apply geometric quantization prescription on it are investigated. These terms are sought as mathematical requirements, which can be traced in an analysis of integrable systems, from the perspective of both potential function and Hamiltonian vector field. The answer is found in momentum map critical points. Basically, a certain disposal of points that allow a momentum map $C^*$ isomorphism, of observables, with harmonic oscillator momentum map enforce geometric quantization rules. Following the general theory, two newly prese…
We prove that the topological recursion reconstructs the WKB expansion of a quantum curve for all spectral curves whose Newton polygons have no interior point (and that are smooth as affine curves). This includes nearly all previously known cases in the literature, and many more; in particular, it includes many quantum curves of order greater than two. We also explore the connection between the choice of ordering in the quantization of the spectral curve and the choice of integration divisor to reconstruct the WKB expansion.
We review an "exact semiclassical" resolution method for the general stationary 1D Schrödinger equation with a polynomial potential. This method avoids having to compute any Stokes phenomena directly; instead, it basically relies on an elementary Wronskian identity, and on a fully exact form of Bohr--Sommerfeld quantization conditions which can also be viewed as a Bethe-Ansatz system of equations that will "solve" the general polynomial 1D Schrödinger problem.
We consider two quantization approaches to the Bateman oscillator model. One is Feshbach-Tikochinsky's quantization approach reformulated concisely without invoking the ${\mathit{SU}(1,1)}$ Lie algebra, and the other is the imaginary-scaling quantization approach developed originally for the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator model. The latter approach overcomes the problem of unbounded-below energy spectrum that is encountered in the former approach. In both the approaches, the positive-definiteness of the squared-norms of the Hamiltonian eigenvectors is ensured. Unlike Feshbach-Tikochinsky's quantiza…
We revisit the quantized version of the harmonic oscillator obtained through a q-dependent family of coherent states. For each q, 0< q < 1, these normalized states form an overcomplete set that resolves the unity with respect to an explicit measure. We restrict our study to the case in which 1/q is a quadratic unit Pisot number: the q-deformed integers form Fibonacci-like sequences of integers. We then examine the main characteristics of the corresponding quantum oscillator: localization in the configuration and in the phase spaces, angle operator, probability distributions and related statist…
We investigate symmetric oscillators, and in particular their quantization, by employing semiclassical and quantum phase functions introduced in the context of Liouville-Green transformations of the Schrödinger equation. For anharmonic oscillators, first order semiclassical quantization is seldom accurate and the higher order expansions eventually break down given the asymptotic nature of the series. A quantum phase that allows in principle to retrieve the exact quantum mechanical quantization condition and wavefunctions is given along with an iterative scheme to compute it. The arbitrariness …
In a system of coupled harmonic oscillators, the interaction can be represented by a real, symmetric and positive definite interaction matrix. The quantization of a Hamiltonian describing such a system has been done in the canonical case. In this paper, we take a more general approach and look at the system as a Wigner quantum system. Hereby, one does not assume the canonical commutation relations, but instead one just requires the compatibility between the Hamilton and Heisenberg equations. Solutions of this problem are related to the Lie superalgebras gl(1|n) and osp(1|2n). We determine the …
Using geometric quantization procedure, the quantization of algebra of observables for physical system with Ricci-flat phase space is obtained. In the classical case the appointed physical system is reduced to harmonic oscillator when the one real parameter is vanished.
The main goal of this work is to study the Dirac oscillator as a quantum field using the canonical formalism of quantum field theory and to develop the canonical quantization procedure for this system in $(1+1)$ and $(3+1)$ dimensions. This is possible because the Dirac oscillator is characterized by the absence of the Klein paradox and by the completeness of its eigenfunctions. We show that the Dirac oscillator field can be seen as constituted by infinite degrees of freedom which are identified as decoupled quantum linear harmonic oscillators. We observe that while for the free Dirac field th…
We study in detail the Schrödinger equation corresponding to the four dimensional $SU(2)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD theory with one flavour. We calculate the Voros symbols, or quantum periods, in four different ways: Borel summation of the WKB series, direct computation of Wronskians of exponentially decaying solutions, the TBA equations of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke/Gaiotto, and instanton counting. We make computations by all of these methods, finding good agreement. We also study the exact quantization condition for the spectrum, and we compute the Fredholm determinant of the inverse of the Schrödinge…
A simple approximate solution for the quantum-mechanical quartic oscillator $V= m^2 x^2+g x^4$ in the double-well regime $m^2<0$ at arbitrary $g \geq 0$ is presented. It is based on a combining of perturbation theory near true minima of the potential, semi-classical approximation at large distances and a description of tunneling under the barrier. It provides 9-10 significant digits in energies and gives for wavefunctions the relative deviation in real $x$-space less than $\lesssim 10^{-3}$.
We revisit the well known Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule (BS) for a 1-D Pseudo-differential self-adjoint Hamiltonian within the algebraic and microlocal framework of Helffer and Sjöstrand; BS holds precisely when the Gram matrix consisting of scalar products of some WKB solutions with respect to the "flux norm" is not invertible. The interest of this procedure lies in its possible generalization to matrix-valued Hamiltonians, like Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. It is simplified in the scalar case by using action-angle variables.
We present a derivation of the energy spectrum of the harmonic oscillator by using the alternative approach of topological quantization. The spectrum is derived from the topological invariants of a particular principal fiber bundle which can be assigned to any configuration of classical mechanics, when formulated according to Maupertuis formalism.
An approach to quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator (DHO) is developed on the basis of a modified Bateman Lagrangian (MBL); thereby some quantum mechanical aspects of the DHO are clarified. We treat the energy operator for the DHO, in addition to the Hamiltonian operator that is determined from the MBL and corresponds to the total energy of the system. It is demonstrated that the energy eigenvalues of the DHO exponentially decrease with time and that transitions between the energy eigenstates occur in accordance with the Schrödinger equation. Also, it is pointed out that a new critic…
In this paper, a new approach for constructing Lagrangians for driven and undriven linearly damped systems is proposed, by introducing a redefined time coordinate and an associated coordinate transformation to ensure that the resulting Lagrangian satisfies the Helmholtz conditions. The approach is applied to canonically quantize the damped harmonic oscillator and although it predicts an energy spectrum that decays at the same rate to previous models, unlike those approaches it recovers the classical critical damping condition, which determines transitions between energy eigenstates, and is the…
We describe the space of (all) invariant deformation quantizations on the hyperbolic plane as solutions of the evolution of a second order hyperbolic differential operator. The construction is entirely explicit and relies on non-commutative harmonic analytical techniques on symplectic symmetric spaces. The present work presents a unified method producing every quantization of the hyperbolic plane, and provides, in the 2-dimensional context, an exact solution to Weinstein's WKB quantization program within geometric terms. The construction reveals the existence of a metric of Lorentz signature c…
We study the canonical quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator by resorting to the realization of the q-deformation of the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra (q-WH) in terms of finite difference operators. We relate the damped oscillator hamiltonian to the q-WH algebra and to the squeezing generator of coherent states theory. We also show that the q-WH algebra is the natural candidate to study thermal field theory. The well known splitting, in the infinite volume limit, of the space of physical states into unitarily inequivalent representations of the canonical commutation relations is briefly com…
The energy levels of quantum systems are determined by quantization conditions. For one-dimensional anharmonic oscillators, one can transform the Schrodinger equation into a Riccati form, i.e., in terms of the logarithmic derivative of the wave function. A perturbative expansion of the logarithmic derivative of the wave function can easily be obtained. The Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition can be expressed in terms of a contour integral around the poles of the logarithmic derivative. Its functional form is B_m(E,g) = n + 1/2, where B is a characteristic function of the anharmonic oscillat…
Using the Pais-Uhlenbeck Oscillator as a toy model, we outline a consistent alternative to the indefinite-metric quantization scheme that does not violate unitarity. We describe the basic mathematical structure of this method by giving an explicit construction of the Hilbert space of state vectors and the corresponding creation and annihilation operators. The latter satisfy the usual bosonic commutation relation and differ from those of the indefinite-metric theories by a sign in the definition of the creation operator. This change of sign achieves a definitization of the indefinite-metric tha…
By applying methods already discussed in a previous series of papers by the same authors, we construct here classes of integrable quantum systems which correspond to n fully resonant oscillators with nonlinear couplings. The same methods are also applied to a series of nontrivial integral sets of functions, which can be constructed when additional symmetries are present due to the equality of some of the frequencies. Besides, for n=3 and resonance 1:1:2, an exceptional integrable system is obtained, in which integrability is not explicitly connected with this type of symmetry. In this exceptio…
We prove that the topological recursion formalism can be used to compute the WKB expansion of solutions of second order differential operators obtained by quantization of any hyper-elliptic curve. We express this quantum curve in terms of spectral Darboux coordinates on the moduli space of meromorphic $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-connections on $\mathbb{P}^1$ and argue that the topological recursion produces a $2g$-parameter family of associated tau functions, where $2g$ is the dimension of the moduli space considered. We apply this procedure to the 6 Painlevé equations which correspond to $g=1$ and cons…
Deformation quantization is a powerful tool to quantize some classical systems especially in noncommutative space. In this work we first show that for a class of special Hamiltonian one can easily find relevant time evolution functions and Wigner functions, which are intrinsic important quantities in the deformation quantization theory. Then based on this observation we investigate a two coupled harmonic oscillators system on the general noncommutative phase space by requiring both spatial and momentum coordinates do not commute each other. We derive all the Wigner functions and the correspond…
Multiparametric quantum $gl(2)$ algebras are presented according to a classification based on their corresponding Lie bialgebra structures. From them, the non-relativistic limit leading to quantum harmonic oscillator algebras is implemented in the form of generalized Lie bialgebra contractions.
By correctly identifying the role of central extension in the centrally extended Heisenberg algebra h, we show that it is indeed possible to construct a Hopf algebraic structure on the corresponding enveloping algebra U(h) and eventually deform it through Drinfeld twist. This Hopf algebraic structure and its deformed version U^F(h) are shown to be induced from a more fundamental Hopf algebra obtained from the Schroedinger field/oscillator algebra and its deformed version, provided that the fields/oscillators are regarded as odd-elements of the super-algebra osp(1|2n). We also discuss the possi…
