It has been recently realized that, in the case of polynomial potentials, the exact WKB method can be reformulated in terms of a system of TBA equations. In this paper we study this method in various examples. We develop a graphical procedure due to Toledo, which provides a fast and simple way to study the wall-crossing behavior of the TBA equations. When complemented with exact quantization conditions, the TBA equations can be used to solve spectral problems exactly in Quantum Mechanics. We compute the quantum corrections to the all-order WKB periods in many examples, as well as the exact spectrum for many potentials. In particular, we show how this method can be used to determine resonances in unbounded potentials.
We give a direct derivation of a proposal of Nekrasov-Shatashvili concerning the quantization conditions of the Toda chain. The quantization conditions are formulated in terms of solutions to a nonlinear integral equation similar to the ones coming from the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. This is equivalent to extremizing a certain function called Yang's potential. It is shown that the Nekrasov-Shatashvili formulation of the quantization conditions follows from the solution theory of the Baxter equation, suggesting that this way of formulating the quantization conditions should indeed be applicabl…
We analyze the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for the mirror model which determine the ground state energy of the light-cone AdS_5 x S^5 superstring living on a cylinder. The light-cone momentum of string is equal to the circumference of the cylinder, and is identified with the inverse temperature of the mirror model. We show that the natural requirement of the analyticity of the Y-functions leads to the quantization of the temperature of the mirror model which has never been observed in any other models.
We derive a system of TBA equations governing the exact WKB periods in one-dimensional Quantum Mechanics with arbitrary polynomial potentials. These equations provide a generalization of the ODE/IM correspondence, and they can be regarded as the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem in resurgent Quantum Mechanics formulated by Voros. Our derivation builds upon the solution of similar Riemann-Hilbert problems in the study of BPS spectra in $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories and of minimal surfaces in AdS. We also show that our TBA equations, combined with exact quantization conditions, provide a po…
In this paper we give a streamlined derivation of the exact quantization condition (EQC) on the quantum periods of the Schrödinger problem in one dimension with a general polynomial potential, based on Wronskian relations. We further generalize the EQC to potentials with a regular singularity, describing spherical symmetric quantum mechanical systems in a given angular momentum sector. We show that the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations that govern the quantum periods undergo nontrivial monodromies as the angular momentum is analytically continued between integer values in the complex …
We derive the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) equations for the Schrödinger equation with an arbitrary polynomial potential and a regular singular (simple and double pole) term. The TBA equations provide a non-trivial generalization of the ODE/IM correspondence and also give a solution for the Riemann-Hilbert problem in the exact WKB method. We study the TBA equations in detail for the linear and the harmonic oscillator potentials together with inverse and centrifugal terms. As an application, we also compute numerically the Voros spectrum for these potentials using the Bohr-Sommerfeld quanti…
Using the recently proposed set of discontinuity relations we translate the AdS/CFT Y-system to TBA integral equations and quantization conditions for a large subset of excited states from the sl(2) sector of the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ string sigma-model. Our derivation provides an analytic proof of the fact that the exact Bethe equations reduce to the Beisert-Staudacher equations in the asymptotic limit. We also construct the corresponding T-system and show that in the language of T-functions the energy formula reduces to a single term which depends on a single T-function.
We derive the fusion hierarchy of functional equations for critical A-D-E lattice models related to, the sl(2) unitary minimal models, the parafermionic models and the supersymmetric models of conformal field theory, and deduce the related TBA functional equations. The derivation uses fusion projectors and applies in the presence of all known integrable boundary conditions on the torus and cylinder. The resulting TBA functional equations are_universal_ in the sense that they depend only on the Coxeter number of the A-D-E graph and are independent of the particular integrable boundary condition…
We show that TBA equations defined by the BPS spectrum of $5d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills on $S^1\times \mathbb{R}^4$ encode the q-Painlevé III$_3$ equation. We find a fine-tuned stratum in the physical moduli space of the theory where solutions to TBA equations can be obtained exactly, and verify that they agree with the algebraic solutions to q-Painlevé. Switching from the physical moduli space to that of stability conditions, we identify a one-parameter deformation of the fine-tuned stratum, where the general solution of the q-Painlevé equation in terms of dual instanton partition f…
We consider the massless tricritical Ising model M(4,5) perturbed by the thermal operator in a cylindrical geometry and apply integrable boundary conditions, labelled by the Kac labels (r,s), that are natural off-critical perturbations of known conformal boundary conditions. We derive massless thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations for all excitations by solving, in the continuum scaling limit, the TBA functional equation satisfied by the double-row transfer matrices of the A_4 lattice model of Andrews, Baxter and Forrester (ABF) in Regime IV. The resulting TBA equations describe the massl…
We consider the massive tricritical Ising model M(4,5) perturbed by the thermal operator phi_{1,3} in a cylindrical geometry and apply integrable boundary conditions, labelled by the Kac labels (r,s), that are natural off-critical perturbations of known conformal boundary conditions. We derive massive thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations for all excitations by solving, in the continuum scaling limit, the TBA functional equation satisfied by the double-row transfer matrices of the A_4 lattice model of Andrews, Baxter and Forrester (ABF) in Regime III. The complete classification of excita…
We compute the boundary entropies for the allowed boundary conditions of the SU(2)-invariant principal chiral model at level k=1. We used the reflection factors determined in a previous work. As a by-product we obtain some miscellaneous results such as the ground-state energy for mixed boundary conditions as well as the degeneracies of the Kondo model in the underscreened and exactly screened cases. All these computations are in perfect agreement with known results.
We study in detail the Schrödinger equation corresponding to the four dimensional $SU(2)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD theory with one flavour. We calculate the Voros symbols, or quantum periods, in four different ways: Borel summation of the WKB series, direct computation of Wronskians of exponentially decaying solutions, the TBA equations of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke/Gaiotto, and instanton counting. We make computations by all of these methods, finding good agreement. We also study the exact quantization condition for the spectrum, and we compute the Fredholm determinant of the inverse of the Schrödinge…
We propose TBA integral equations for multiparticle soliton (fermion) states in the Sine-Gordon (massive Thirring) model. This is based on T-system and Y-system equations, which follow from the Bethe Ansatz solution in the light-cone lattice formulation of the model. Even and odd charge sectors are treated on an equal footing, corresponding to periodic and twisted boundary conditions, respectively. The analytic properties of the Y-system functions are conjectured on the basis of the large volume solution of the system, which we find explicitly. A simple relation between the TBA Y-functions and…
We consider Y-system functional equations of the form $$ Y_n(x+i)Y_n(x-i)=\prod_{m=1}^N (1+Y_m(x))^{G_{nm}}$$ and the corresponding nonlinear integral equations of the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. We prove an existence and uniqueness result for solutions of these equations, subject to appropriate conditions on the analytical properties of the $Y_n$, in particular the absence of zeros in a strip around the real axis. The matrix $G_{nm}$ must have non-negative real entries, and be irreducible and diagonalisable over $\mathbb{R}$ with spectral radius less than 2. This includes the adjacency matric…
We discuss the description of generic excited states in the quantum deformed AdS_5 x S^5 mirror thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and derive the associated Y-system. This Y-system shows an interesting new feature; it depends explicitly on the excited state under consideration. Similarly, it also depends on twisted boundary conditions. We construct the asymptotic solution of these TBA and Y-system equations by deriving the twisted transfer matrix for the quantum deformed Hubbard model and finding the deformed mirror bound state dressing phase. This asymptotic construction is insensitive to the precise…
We consider the non-unitary Lee-Yang minimal model ${\cal M}(2,5)$ in three different finite geometries: (i) on the interval with integrable boundary conditions labelled by the Kac labels $(r,s)=(1,1),(1,2)$, (ii) on the circle with periodic boundary conditions and (iii) on the periodic circle including an integrable purely transmitting defect. We apply $φ_{1,3}$ integrable perturbations on the boundary and on the defect and describe the flow of the spectrum. Adding a $Φ_{1,3}$ integrable perturbation to move off-criticality in the bulk, we determine the finite size spectrum of the massive sca…
We study various non-perturbative approaches to the quantization of the Seiberg-Witten curve of ${\cal N}=2$, $SU(2)$ super Yang-Mills theory, which is closely related to the modified Mathieu operator. The first approach is based on the quantum WKB periods and their resurgent properties. We show that these properties are encoded in the TBA equations of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke determined by the BPS spectrum of the theory, and we relate the Borel-resummed quantum periods to instanton calculus. In addition, we use the TS/ST correspondence to obtain a closed formula for the Fredholm determinant of t…
The g-function was introduced by Affleck and Ludwig as a measure of the ground state degeneracy of a conformal boundary condition. We consider this function for perturbations of the conformal Yang-Lee model by bulk and boundary fields using conformal perturbation theory, the truncated conformal space approach and the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). We find that the TBA equations derived by LeClair et al describe the massless boundary flows, up to an overall constant, but are incorrect when one considers a simultaneous bulk perturbation; however the TBA equations do correctly give the `non-un…
We study the spectrum of the scaling Lee-Yang model on a finite interval from two points of view: via a generalisation of the truncated conformal space approach to systems with boundaries, and via the boundary thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. This allows reflection factors to be matched with specific boundary conditions, and leads us to propose a new (and non-minimal) family of reflection factors to describe the one relevant boundary perturbation in the model. The equations proposed previously for the ground state on an interval must be revised in certain regimes, and we find the necessary modifica…
The SWKB quantization condition is an exact quantization condition for the conventional shape-invariant potentials. On the other hand, this condition equation does not hold for other known solvable systems. The origin of the (non-)exactness is understood in the context of the quantum Hamilton--Jacobi formalism. First, we confirm the statement and show inexplicit properties numerically for the case of the conditionally exactly solvable systems by Junker and Roy. The SWKB condition breaks for this case, but the condition equation is restored within a certain degree of accuracy. We propose a nove…
Theory of pointlike magnetic monopole with an arbitrary magnetic charge is considered. It is shown that a proper description requires making use of nonunitary representations of the rotation group and the nonassociative generalization of the gauge group and fibre bundle theory.
We formulate the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) equations for the closed (periodic boundary conditions) $A^{(2)}_2$ quantum spin chain in an external magnetic field, in the (noncritical) regime where the anisotropy parameter $η$ is real. In the limit $η\to 0$, we recover the TBA equations of the antiferromagnetic su(3)-invariant chain in the fundamental representation. We solve these equations for low temperature and small field, and calculate the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility.
We give some remarks on exact quantization conditions associated with quantized mirror curves of local Calabi-Yau threefolds, conjectured in arXiv:1410.3382. It is shown that they characterize a non-perturbative completion of the refined topological strings in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. We find that the quantization conditions enjoy an exact S-dual invariance. We also discuss Borel summability of the semi-classical spectrum.
I choose the Lee-Yang model and go through different approaches to analyze it using the form factor approach and the bootstrap program, the lattice description and the lattice TBA equations for a full understanding of the model. The bootstrap program aims to explicitly solve 1+1 dimensional integrable quantum field theories. In the first step, called the S-matrix bootstrap, the scattering matrix, is determined from its properties. In developing a defect form factor program the first step is the T-matrix bootstrap. Interacting integrable defect theories are purely transmitting and topological. …
Dirac's quantization condition, $eg=n/2$ ($n \in \Bbb Z$), and Schwinger's quantization condition, $eg=n$ ($n \in \Bbb Z$), for an electric charge $e$ and a magnetic charge $g$ are derived by utilizing the Atiyah-Singer index theorem in two dimensions. The massless Dirac equation on a sphere with a magnetic-monopole background is solved in order to count the number of zero-modes of the Dirac operator.
We study in detail the analytic properties of the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) equations for the anomalous dimensions of composite operators in the planar limit of the 3D N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons gauge theory and derive functional relations for the jump discontinuities across the branch cuts in the complex rapidity plane. These relations encode the analytic structure of the Y functions and are extremely similar to the ones obtained for the previously-studied AdS(5)/CFT(4) case. Together with the Y-system and more basic analyticity conditions, they are completely equivalent to the TB…
Inspired by recent results in the context of AdS/CFT integrability, we reconsider the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations describing the 1D fermionic Hubbard model at finite temperature. We prove that the infinite set of TBA equations are equivalent to a simple nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem for a finite number of unknown functions. The latter can be transformed into a set of three coupled nonlinear integral equations defined over a finite support, which can be easily solved numerically. We discuss the emergence of an exact Bethe Ansatz and the link between the TBA approach and the results…
The Atiyah-Singer index theorem is generalized to a two-dimensional SO(3) Yang-Mills-Higgs (YMH) system. The generalized theorem is proven by using the heat kernel method and a nonlinear realization of SU(2) gauge symmetry. This theorem is applied to the problem of deriving a charge quantization condition in the four-dimensional SO(3) YMH system with non-Abelian monopoles. The resulting quantization condition, eg=n (n: integer), for an electric charge e and a magnetic charge g is consistent with that found by Arafune, Freund and Goebel. It is shown that the integer n is half of the index of a …
We propose and test exact quantization conditions for the $N$-particle quantum elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider integrable system, as well as its Calogero-Moser limit, based on the conjectural correspondence to the five-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 1$ $SU(N)$ gauge theory in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. We discuss two natural sets of quantization conditions, related by the electro-magnetic duality, and the importance of non-perturbative corrections in the Planck constant. We also comment on the eigenfunction problem, by reinterpreting the Separation of Variables approach in gauge theory terms.
There are two well-known approaches to studying nonperturbative aspects of quantum mechanical systems: Saddle point analysis of the partition functions in Euclidean path integral formulation and the exact-WKB analysis based on the wave functions in the Schrödinger equation. In this work, based on the quantization conditions obtained from the exact-WKB method, we determine the relations between the two formalism and in particular show how the two Stokes phenomena are connected to each other: the Stokes phenomenon leading to the ambiguous contribution of different sectors of the path integral fo…
The partition function of ABJ(M) theories on the three-sphere can be regarded as the canonical partition function of an ideal Fermi gas with a non-trivial Hamiltonian. We propose an exact expression for the spectral determinant of this Hamiltonian, which generalizes recent results obtained in the maximally supersymmetric case. As a consequence, we find an exact WKB quantization condition determining the spectrum which is in agreement with numerical results. In addition, we investigate the factorization properties and functional equations for our conjectured spectral determinants. These functio…
Inspired by recent connections between spectral theory and topological string theory, we propose exact quantization conditions for the relativistic Toda lattice of N particles. These conditions involve the Nekrasov-Shatashvili free energy, which resums the perturbative WKB expansion, but they require in addition a non-perturbative contribution, which is related to the perturbative result by an S-duality transformation of the Planck constant. We test the quantization conditions against explicit calculations of the spectrum for N=3. Our proposal can be generalized to arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau m…
We establish the precise relation between the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) quantization scheme and Grassi-Hatsuda-Marino conjecture for the mirror curve of arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau threefold. For a mirror curve of genus $g$, the NS quantization scheme leads to $g$ quantization conditions for the corresponding integrable system. The exact NS quantization conditions enjoy a self S-duality with respect to Planck constant $\hbar$ and can be derived from the Lockhart-Vafa partition function of nonperturbative topological string. Based on a recent observation on the correspondence between spectral th…
We propose exact quantization conditions for the quantum integrable systems of Goncharov and Kenyon, based on the enumerative geometry of the corresponding toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our conjecture builds upon recent results on the quantization of mirror curves, and generalizes a previous proposal for the quantization of the relativistic Toda lattice. We present explicit tests of our conjecture for the integrable systems associated to the resolved C^3/Z_5 and C^3/Z_6 orbifolds.
A well-motivated conjecture states that the open topological string partition function on toric geometries in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit is annihilated by a difference operator called the quantum mirror curve. Recently, the complex structure variables parameterizing the curve, which play the role of eigenvalues for related operators, were conjectured to satisfy a quantization condition non-perturbative in the NS parameter $\hbar$. Here, we argue that this quantization condition arises from requiring single-valuedness of the partition function, combined with the requirement of smoothness in…
We study the relation between a given set of equations of motion in configuration space and a Poisson bracket. A Poisson structure is consistent with the equations of motion if the symplectic form satisfy some consistency conditions. When the symplectic structure is commutative these conditions are the Helmholtz integrability equations for the nonrestricted inverse problem of the calculus of variations. We have found the corresponding consistency conditions for the symplectic noncommutative case.
Based on the standard transfer matrix, a formally exact quantization condition for arbitrary potentials, which outflanks and unifies the historical approaches, is derived. It can be used to find the exact bound-state energy eigenvalues of the quantum system without solving an equation of motion for the system wave functions.
We show that the requirement of the relativistic invariance for any self-interacting, abelian p-form theory uniquely determines the form of the corresponding quantization condition.
We propose an unexplored quantization method. It is based on the assumption of dynamical space-time intrinsic periodicities for relativistic fields, which in turn can be regarded as dual to extra-dimensional fields. As a consequence we obtain a unified and consistent interpretation of Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics in terms of Deterministic Geometrodynamics.
This paper describes a light-cone quantization of a two-dimensional massive scalar field without periodic boundary conditions in order to make the quantization manifestly consistent to causality. For this purpose, the field is decomposed by the Legendre polynomials. Creation-annihilation operators for this field are defined and the Fock space was constructed.
Quantization of electromagnetic fields is investigated in the framework of stochastic variational method (SVM). Differently from the canonical quantization, this method does not require canonical form and quantization can be performed directly from the gauge invariant Lagrangian. The gauge condition is used to choose dynamically independent variables. We verify that, in the Coulomb gauge condition, SVM result is completely equivalent to the traditional result. On the other hand, in the Lorentz gauge condition, SVM quantization can be performed without introducing the indefinite metric. The tem…
A very simple minisuperspace describing the Oppenheimer-Snyder collapsing star is found. The semiclasical wave function of that model turn out to describe a bound state. For fixed initial radius of the collapsing star, the corrssponding Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition implies mass quantization. An extension of this model, and some consequences, are considered.
The integrable perturbation of the degenerate boundary condition (d) by the $ϕ_{1,3}$ boundary field generates a renormalization group flow down to the superposition of Cardy boundary states (+)&(-). Exact Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) equations for all the excited states are derived here extending the results of a previous paper to this case. As an intermediate step, the non-Cardy boundary conformal sector (+)&(-) is also described as the scaling limit of an A_4 lattice model with appropriate integrable boundary conditions and produces the first example of superposition of finitized Viraso…
We formulate Wilson loop observables as products of eikonal Wilson lines given in terms of on-shell scattering amplitudes. Using these, we derive the Dirac-Schwinger-Zwanziger quantization condition and its gravitational (Taub-NUT) double copy, where we find a relativistic generalisation of the usual non-relativistic gravitational quantization condition. We also compute the relativistic Wilson loop for an anyon-anyon system, obtaining a similar relativistic generalisation of the Aharonov-Bohm phase for gravitational anyons.
We show that the commonly known conductor boundary conditions $E_{||}=B_\perp=0$ can be realized in two ways which we call 'thick' and 'thin' conductor. The 'thick' conductor is the commonly known approach and includes a Neumann condition on the normal component $E_\perp$ of the electric field whereas for a 'thin' conductor $E_\perp$ remains without boundary condition. Both types describe different physics already on the classical level where a 'thin' conductor allows for an interaction between the normal components of currents on both sides. On quantum level different forces between a conduct…
We propose a new exact quantization condition for a class of quantum mechanical systems derived from local toric Calabi-Yau three-folds. Our proposal includes all contributions to the energy spectrum which are non-perturbative in the Planck constant, and is much simpler than the available quantization condition in the literature. We check that our proposal is consistent with previous works and implies non-trivial relations among the topological Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of the toric Calabi-Yau geometries. Together with the recent developments, our proposal opens a new avenue in the long invest…
We explicitly carry out the symplectic quantization of a family of multi-field Generalized Proca (GP) electrodynamics theories. In the process, we provide an independent derivation of the so-called secondary constraint enforcing relations -- consistency conditions that significantly restrict the allowed interactions in multi-field settings already at the classical level. Additionally, we unveil the existence of quantum consistency conditions, which apply in both single- and multi-field GP scenarios. Our newly found conditions imply that not all classically well-defined (multi-)GP theories are …
We describe a monopole-like order parameter for the confinement-deconfinement transition in gauge theories where dynamical charges and monopoles coexist. It has been recently proposed in a collaboration with J. Froehlich. It avoids an inconsistency in the treatment of small scales present in earlier definitions of monopole fields by respecting Dirac's quantization condition for electromagnetic fluxes. An application to SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory is outlined, naturally fitting in the 't Hooft scenario for confinement.
One Lagrangian BRST quantization principle is that of imposing correct Schwinger-Dyson equations through the BRST Ward identities. In this paper we show how to derive the analogous $Sp(2)$-symmetric quantization condition in flat coordinates from an underlying $Sp(2)$-symmetric Schwinger-Dyson BRST symmetry. We also show under what conditions this can be recast in the language of triplectic quantization.
The constrained Hamiltonian systems admitting no gauge conditions are considered. The methods to deal with such systems are discussed and developed. As a concrete application, the relationship between the Dirac and reduced phase space quantizations is investigated for spin models belonging to the class of systems under consideration. It is traced out that the two quantization methods may give similar, or essentially different physical results, and, moreover, a class of constrained systems, which can be quantized only by the Dirac method, is discussed. A possible interpretation of the gauge deg…
Since the structure of space-time at very short distances is believed to get modified possibly due to noncommutativity effects and as the Dirac Quantization Condition (DQC), $μe = \frac{N}{2}\hbar c$, probes the magnetic field point singularity, a natural question arises whether the same condition will still survive. We show that the DQC on a noncommutative space in a model of dynamical noncommutative quantum mechanics remains the same as in the commutative case to first order in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$, leading to the conjecture that the condition will not alter in higher orders.
We perform canonical quantization of open strings in the $D$-brane background with a $B$-field. Treating the mixed boundary condition as a primary constraint, we get a set of secondary constraints. Then these constraints are shown to be equivalent to orbifold conditions to be imposed on normal string modes. These orbifold conditions are a generalization of the familiar orbifold conditions which arise when we describe open strings in terms of closed strings. Solving the constraints explicitly, we obtain a simple Hamiltonian for the open string, which reveals the nature of noncommutativity trans…
Existence of Unruh effect is often understood from the property of two-point function along Rindler trajectory where it satisfies KMS condition. In particular, it exhibits the so-called KMS periodicity along imaginary time direction. Corresponding period is then identified with reciprocal of Unruh temperature times Boltzmann constant. We show here that the two-point function including leading order perturbative corrections due to polymer quantization, the quantization method used in loop quantum gravity, violates KMS condition in low-energy regime. This violation is caused by correction terms …
In the approach to the geometric quantization, based on the conversion of second-class constraints, we resolve the respective non-linear zero curvature conditions for the extended symplectic potential. From the zero curvature conditions, we deduce new, linear, equations for the extended symplectic potential. Then we show that being the linear equations satisfied, their solution does certainly satisfy the non-linear zero curvature condition, as well. Finally, we give the functional resolution to the new linear equations, and then deduce the respective path integral representation. We do our con…
We investigate the validity of the Dirac quantization condition (DQC) for magnetic monopoles in noncommutative space-time. We use an approach based on an extension of the method introduced by Wu and Yang; the effects of noncommutativity are analyzed using the Seiberg-Witten map and the corresponding deformed Maxwell's equations are discussed. By means of a perturbation expansion in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$, we show first that the DQC remains unmodified up to the first and second order. This result is then generalized to all orders in the expansion parameter for a class of noncommutat…
