In a system of coupled harmonic oscillators, the interaction can be represented by a real, symmetric and positive definite interaction matrix. The quantization of a Hamiltonian describing such a system has been done in the canonical case. In this paper, we take a more general approach and look at the system as a Wigner quantum system. Hereby, one does not assume the canonical commutation relations, but instead one just requires the compatibility between the Hamilton and Heisenberg equations. Solutions of this problem are related to the Lie superalgebras gl(1|n) and osp(1|2n). We determine the spectrum of the considered Hamiltonian in specific representations of these Lie superalgebras and discuss the results in detail. We also make the connection with the well-known canonical case.
A generalized Weyl quantization formalism for a particle on the circle investigated in \cite{1} is developed. A Wigner function for the state $\hat{\varrho}$ and the kernel $\mathcal{K}$ for a particle on the circle is defined and its properties are analyzed. Then it is shown how this Wigner function can be easily modified to give the number-phase Wigner function in quantum optics. Some examples of such number-phase Wigner function are considered.
In this paper we review the basic results concerning the Wigner transform and then we completely solve the quantum forced harmonic/inverted oscillator in such a framework; eventually, the tunnel effect for the forced inverted oscillator is discussed.
We define a Wigner distribution function for a one-dimensional finite quantum system, in which the position and momentum operators have a finite (multiplicity-free) spectrum. The distribution function is thus defined on discrete phase-space, i.e. on a finite discrete square grid. These discrete Wigner functions possess a number of properties similar to the Wigner function for a continuous quantum system such as the quantum harmonic oscillator. As an example, we consider the so-called su(2) oscillator model in dimension 2j+1, which is known to tend to the canonical oscillator when j tends to in…
Recently, several papers have been dedicated to the Wigner quantization of different Hamiltonians. In these examples, many interesting mathematical and physical properties have been shown. Among those we have the ubiquitous relation with Lie superalgebras and their representations. In this paper, we study two one-dimensional Hamiltonians for which the Wigner quantization is related with the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra osp(1|2). One of them, the Hamiltonian H = xp, is popular due to its connection with the Riemann zeros, discovered by Berry and Keating on the one hand and Connes on the oth…
The Weyl quantization of classical observables on the torus (as phase space) without regularity assumptions is explicitly computed. The equivalence class of symbols yielding the same Weyl operator is characterized. The Heisenberg equation for the dynamics of general quantum observables is written through the Moyal brackets on the torus and the support of the Wigner transform is characterized. Finally, a dequantization procedure is introduced that applies, for instance, to the Pauli matrices. As a result we obtain the corresponding classical symbols.
For a quantum harmonic oscillator an explicit expression that describes the energy distribution as a coordinate function is obtained. The presence of the energy function poles is shown for the quantum system in domains where the Wigner function has negative values.
Recently, a new definition for a Wigner distribution function for a one-dimensional finite quantum system, in which the position and momentum operators have a finite (multiplicity-free) spectrum, was developed. This distribution function is defined on discrete phase-space (a finite square grid), and can thus be referred to as the Wigner matrix. In the current paper, we compute this Wigner matrix (or rather, the pre-Wigner matrix, which is related to the Wigner matrix by a simple matrix multiplication) for the case of the $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ finite oscillator. The first expression for the matrix…
In the Wigner framework, one abandons the assumption that the usual canonical commutation relations are necessarily valid. Instead, the compatibility of Hamilton's equations and the Heisenberg equations are the starting point, and no further assumptions are made about how the position and momentum operators commute. Wigner quantization leads to new classes of solutions, and representations of Lie superalgebras are needed to describe them. For the n-dimensional Wigner harmonic oscillator, solutions are known in terms of the Lie superalgebras osp(1|2n) and gl(1|n). For n=3N, the question arises …
The Hamiltonian of the harmonic oscillator is usually defined as a differential operator, but an integral representation can be obtained by using the coherent state quantization. The finite frame quantization is a finite counterpart of the coherent state quantization and it allows us to define a finite oscillator by starting from the integral representation of the harmonic oscillator. Our purpose is to investigate the oscillator obtained in this way, and to present a possible application to the discrete fractional Fourier transform.
We consider the compatibility conditions for a N-particle D-dimensional Wigner quantum oscillator. These conditions can be rewritten as certain triple relations involving anticommutators, so it is natural to look for solutions in terms of Lie superalgebras. In the recent classification of ``generalized quantum statistics'' for the basic classical Lie superalgebras [math-ph/0504013], each such statistics is characterized by a set of creation and annihilation operators plus a set of triple relations. In the present letter, we investigate which cases of this classification also lead to solutions …
The metaplectic covariance for all forms of the Weyl-Wigner-Groenewold-Moyal quantization is established with different realizations of the inhomogeneous symplectic algebra. Beyond that, in its most general form $W_{\infty}$ -covariance of this quantization scheme is investigated, and explicit expressions for the quantum-deformed Hamiltonian vector fields are presented. In a general basis the structure constants of the $W_{\infty}$-algebra are obtained and its subalgebras are analyzed.
An adaptation of the WKB method in the deformation quantization formalism is presented with the aim to obtain an approximate technique of solving the eigenvalue problem for energy in the phase space quantum approach. A relationship between the phase $σ(\vec{r})$ of a wave function $\exp \left(\frac{i}{\hbar} σ(\vec{r}) \right)$ and its respective Wigner function is derived. Formulas to calculate the Wigner function of a product and of a superposition of wave functions are proposed. Properties of a Wigner function of interfering states are also investigated. Examples of this quasi - classical a…
The classical quantization of a Lienard-type nonlinear oscillator is achieved by a quantization scheme (M.C. Nucci. Theor. Math. Phys., 168:997--1004, 2011) that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schrödinger equation. This method straightforwardly yields the correct Schrödinger equation in the momentum space (V. Chithiika Ruby, M. Senthilvelan, and M. Lakshmanan. J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., 45:382002, 2012), and sheds light into the apparently remarkable connection with the linear harmonic oscillator.
We demonstrate a method which allows the stochastic modelling of quantum systems for which the generalised Fokker-Planck equation in the phase space contains derivatives of higher than second order. This generalises quantum stochastics far beyond the quantum-optical paradigm of three and four-wave mixing problems to which these techniques have so far only been applicable. To verify our method, we model a full Wigner representation for the optical parametric oscillator, a system where the correct results are well known and can be obtained by other methods.
New time dependent Wigner functions for the quantum harmonic oscillator have been obtained in this work. The Moyal equation for the harmonic oscillator has been presented as the wave equation of a 2D membrane in the phase plane. The values of the Wigner function are equal to the deviation values of the points on the surface of the membrane from the equilibrium state. The positive and negative values of the Wigner function correspond to the direction of the deviation from the equilibrium state. As an example, a time dependent Wigner function corresponding to the standing wave of quasi-probabili…
For a quantum oscillator with the polynomial potential an explicit expression that describes the energy distribution as a coordinate (and momentum) function is obtained. The presence of the energy function poles is shown for the quantum system in the domains where the Wigner function has negative values.
We apply the Born-Jordan and Weyl quantization formulas for polynomials in canonical coordinates to the constants of motion of some examples of the superintegrable 2D anisotropic harmonic oscillator. Our aim is to study the behaviour of the algebra of the constants of motion after the different quantization procedures. In the examples considered, we have that the Weyl formula always preserves the original superintegrable structure of the system, while the Born-Jordan formula, when producing different operators than the Weyl's one, does not.
The integral Wigner - Liouwille equation describing time evolution of the semi-relativistic quantum 1D harmonic oscillator have been exactly solved by combination of the Monte-Carlo procedure and molecular dynamics methods. The strong influence of the relativistic effects on the time evolution of the momentum, velocity and coordinate Wigner distribution functions and the average values of quantum operators have been studied. Unexpected 'protuberances' in time evolution of the distribution functions were observed. Relativistic proper time dilation for oscillator have been calculated.
An n-particle 3-dimensional Wigner quantum oscillator model is constructed explicitly. It is non-canonical in that the usual coordinate and linear momentum commutation relations are abandoned in favour of Wigner's suggestion that Hamilton's equations and the Heisenberg equations are identical as operator equations. The construction is based on the use of Fock states corresponding to a family of irreducible representations of the Lie superalgebra sl(1|3n) indexed by an A-superstatistics parameter p. These representations are typical for p\geq 3n but atypical for p<3n. The branching rules for th…
The output field from a continuously driven linear parametric oscillator may exhibit considerably more squeezing than the intracavity field. Inspired by this fact, we explore the nonclassical features of the steady-state output field of a driven nonlinear Kerr parametric oscillator using a temporal wave packet mode description. Utilizing a new numerical method, we have access to the density matrix of arbitrary wave packet modes. Remarkably, we find that even though the steady-state cavity field is always characterized by a positive Wigner function, the output may exhibit Wigner negativity, dep…
The mapping of the Wigner distribution function (WDF) for a given bound-state onto a semiclassical distribution function (SDF) satisfying the Liouville equation introduced previously by us is applied to the ground state of the Morse oscillator. Here we give results showing that the SDF gets closer to the corresponding WDF as the number of levels of the Morse oscillator increases. We find that for a Morse oscillator with one level only, the agreement between the WDF and the mapped SDF is very poor but for a Morse oscillator of ten levels it becomes satisfactory.
The Wigner function is a quantum analogue of the classical joined distribution of position and momentum. As such is should be a good tool to study quantum-classical correspondence. In this paper, the classical limit of the Wigner function is shown using the quantum harmonic oscillator as an example. The Wigner function is found exactly for all states. The semi-classical wavefunctions for highly excited states are used as the approach to the classical limit. Therefore, one can found the classical limit of the Wigner function for highly excited states and shown that it gives the classical microc…
A recent paper [J. Math. Phys. {\bf 59}, 082105 (2018)] constructs a Hamiltonian for the (dissipative) damped harmonic oscillator. We point out that non-Hermiticity of this Hamiltonian has been ignored to find real discrete eigenvalues which are actually non-real. We emphasize that non-Hermiticity in Hamiltonian is crucial and it is a quantal signature of dissipation.
We return to the description of the damped harmonic oscillator by means of a closed quantum theory with a general assessment of previous works, in particular the Bateman-Caldirola-Kanai model and a new model recently proposed by one of the authors. We show the local equivalence between the two models and argue that latter has better high energy behavior and is naturally connected to existing open-quantum-systems approaches.
We derive the steady state solution of the Fokker-Planck equation that describes the dynamics of the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator in the truncated Wigner representation of the density operator. The adiabatic limit of strong pump damping is assumed. This phase space image provides a clear view of the intracavity two-mode entangled state valid in all operating regimes of the OPO. A nongaussian distribution is obtained for the above threshold solution.
We consider a quantum system consisting of a one-dimensional chain of M identical harmonic oscillators with natural frequency $ω$, coupled by means of springs. Such systems have been studied before, and appear in various models. In this paper, we approach the system as a Wigner Quantum System, not imposing the canonical commutation relations, but using instead weaker relations following from the compatibility of Hamilton's equations and the Heisenberg equations. In such a setting, the quantum system allows solutions in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, with a discrete spectrum for all physic…
The classical boundaries of the quantum singular oscillator (SO) is addressed under Weyl-Wigner phase-space and Bohmian mechanics frameworks as to comparatively evaluate phase-space and configuration space quantum trajectories as well as to compute distorting quantum fluctuations. For an engendered pure state \textit{quasi}-gaussian Wigner function that recovers the classical time evolution (at phase and configuration spaces), Bohmian trajectories are analytically obtained as to show how the SO energy and anharmonicity parameters drive the quantum regime through the so-called quantum force, wh…
The conditions that must be fulfilled by a certain physical system to apply geometric quantization prescription on it are investigated. These terms are sought as mathematical requirements, which can be traced in an analysis of integrable systems, from the perspective of both potential function and Hamiltonian vector field. The answer is found in momentum map critical points. Basically, a certain disposal of points that allow a momentum map $C^*$ isomorphism, of observables, with harmonic oscillator momentum map enforce geometric quantization rules. Following the general theory, two newly prese…
We consider two quantization approaches to the Bateman oscillator model. One is Feshbach-Tikochinsky's quantization approach reformulated concisely without invoking the ${\mathit{SU}(1,1)}$ Lie algebra, and the other is the imaginary-scaling quantization approach developed originally for the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator model. The latter approach overcomes the problem of unbounded-below energy spectrum that is encountered in the former approach. In both the approaches, the positive-definiteness of the squared-norms of the Hamiltonian eigenvectors is ensured. Unlike Feshbach-Tikochinsky's quantiza…
We describe a quantum system consisting of a one-dimensional linear chain of n identical harmonic oscillators coupled by a nearest neighbor interaction. Two boundary conditions are taken into account: periodic boundary conditions (where the nth oscillator is coupled back to the first oscillator) and fixed wall boundary conditions (where the first oscillator and the $n$th oscillator are coupled to a fixed wall). The two systems are characterized by their Hamiltonian. For their quantization, we treat these systems as Wigner Quantum Systems (WQS), allowing more solutions than just the canonical q…
We investigate symmetric oscillators, and in particular their quantization, by employing semiclassical and quantum phase functions introduced in the context of Liouville-Green transformations of the Schrödinger equation. For anharmonic oscillators, first order semiclassical quantization is seldom accurate and the higher order expansions eventually break down given the asymptotic nature of the series. A quantum phase that allows in principle to retrieve the exact quantum mechanical quantization condition and wavefunctions is given along with an iterative scheme to compute it. The arbitrariness …
Using linear invariant operators in a constructive way we find the most general thermal density operator and Wigner function for time-dependent generalized oscillators. The general Wigner function has five free parameters and describes the thermal Wigner function about a classical trajectory in phase space. The contour of the Wigner function depicts an elliptical orbit with a constant area moving about the classical trajectory, whose eccentricity determines the squeezing of the initial vacuum.
The creation of quantum coherences requires a system to be anharmonic. The simplest such continuous 1D quantum system is the Kerr oscillator. It has a number of interesting symmetries we derive. Its quantum dynamics is best studied in phase space, using Wigner's distribution W and the associated Wigner phase space current J. Expressions for the continuity equation governing its time evolution are derived in terms of J and it is shown that J for Kerr oscillators follows circles in phase space. Using J we also show that the evolution's classical shear in phase space is quantum suppressed by an e…
We revisit the quantized version of the harmonic oscillator obtained through a q-dependent family of coherent states. For each q, 0< q < 1, these normalized states form an overcomplete set that resolves the unity with respect to an explicit measure. We restrict our study to the case in which 1/q is a quadratic unit Pisot number: the q-deformed integers form Fibonacci-like sequences of integers. We then examine the main characteristics of the corresponding quantum oscillator: localization in the configuration and in the phase spaces, angle operator, probability distributions and related statist…
We present the quantum theory of coherent Ising machines based on networks of degenerate optical parametric oscillators (DOPOs). In a simple model consisting of two coupled DOPOs, both positive-$P$ representation and truncated Wigner representation predict quantum correlation and inseparability between the two DOPOs in spite of the open-dissipative nature of the system. Here, we apply the truncated Wigner representation method to coherent Ising machines with thermal, vacuum, and squeezed reservoir fields. We find that the probability of finding the ground state of a one-dimensional Ising model…
Quantum-mechanical WKB-method is elaborated for the known quantum oscillator problem in curved 3-spaces models Euclid, Riemann, and Lobachevsky E_{3}, H_{3}, S_{3} in the framework of the complex variable function theory. Generalized generally covariant Schrödinger equation is considered. In all three space models, exact energy levels are found with the help of constructing special formal WKB-sieries.
The differential structure of operator bases used in various forms of the Weyl-Wigner-Groenewold-Moyal (WWGM) quantization is analyzed and a derivative-based approach, alternative to the conventional integral-based one is developed. Thus the fundamental quantum relations follow in a simpler and unified manner. An explicit formula for the ordered products of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra is obtained. The W(infty) -covariance of the WWGM-quantization in its most general form is established. It is shown that the group action of W(infty) that is realized in the classical phase space induces on bases…
A system of $N$ non-canonical dynamically free 3D harmonic oscillators is studied. The position and the momentum operators (PM-operators) of the system do not satisfy the canonical commutation relations (CCRs). Instead they obey the weaker postulates for the oscillator to be a Wigner quantum system. In particular the PM-operators fulfil the main postulate, which is due to Wigner: they satisfy the equations of motion (the Hamiltonian's equations) and the Heisenberg equations. One of the relevant features is that the coordinate (the momentum) operators do not commute, but instead their squares d…
The second-order differential equation for a damped harmonic oscillator can be converted to two coupled first-order equations, with two two-by-two matrices leading to the group $Sp(2)$. It is shown that this oscillator system contains the essential features of Wigner's little groups dictating the internal space-time symmetries of particles in the Lorentz-covariant world. The little groups are the subgroups of the Lorentz group whose transformations leave the four-momentum of a given particle invariant. It is shown that the damping modes of the oscillator correspond to the little groups for mas…
We propose a scheme to prepare nanomechanical oscillators in nonclassical steady states, characterized by a pronounced negative Wigner function. In our optomechanical approach, the mechanical oscillator couples to multiple laser driven resonances of an optical cavity. By lowering the resonance frequency of the oscillator via an inhomogeneous electrostatic field, we significantly enhance its intrinsic geometric nonlinearity per phonon. This causes the motional sidebands to split into separate spectral lines for each phonon number and transitions between individual phonon Fock states can be sele…
The analysis of wave-packet dynamics may be greatly simplified when viewed in phase-space. While harmonic oscillators are often used as a convenient platform to study wave-packets, arbitrary state preparation in these systems is more challenging. Here, we demonstrate a direct measurement of the Wigner distribution of complex photon states in an anharmonic oscillator - a superconducting phase circuit, biased in the small anharmonicity regime. We test our method on both non-classical states composed of two energy eigenstates and on the dynamics of a phase-locked wavepacket. This method requires …
The main goal of this work is to study the Dirac oscillator as a quantum field using the canonical formalism of quantum field theory and to develop the canonical quantization procedure for this system in $(1+1)$ and $(3+1)$ dimensions. This is possible because the Dirac oscillator is characterized by the absence of the Klein paradox and by the completeness of its eigenfunctions. We show that the Dirac oscillator field can be seen as constituted by infinite degrees of freedom which are identified as decoupled quantum linear harmonic oscillators. We observe that while for the free Dirac field th…
This is a response to a recently reported comment [1] on paper [J. Math. Phys.59, 082105 (2018)] regarding the quantization of damped harmonic oscillator using a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with real energy eigenvalues. We assert here that the calculation of Eq. (29) of [2] is incorrect, and thus the subsequent steps via the Nikiforov-Uvarov method are affected, and the energy eigenvalues should have been complex. However, we show here that the Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian should be firstly achieved to make the correct transition from classical Hamiltonian to quantum counterpart, and this can …
We have calculated the joint probability distribution function for random reverse-cyclic matrices and shown that it is related to an N-body exactly solvable model. We refer to this well-known model potential as a screened harmonic oscillator. The connection enables us to obtain all the correlations among the particle positions moving in a screened harmonic potential. The density of nontrivial eigenvalues of this ensemble is found to be of the Wigner form and admits a hole at the origin, in contrast to the semicircle law of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices. The spacing distri…
The properties of a noncanonical 3D Wigner quantum oscillator, whose position and momentum operators generate the Lie superalgebra sl(1|3), are further investigated. Within each state space W(p), p=1,2,..., the energy E_q, q=0,1,2,3, takes no more than 4 different values. If the oscillator is in a stationary state ψ_q \in W(p) then measurements of the non-commuting Cartesian coordinates of the particle are such that their allowed values are consistent with it being found at a finite number of sites, called ``nests''. These lie on a sphere centered on the origin of fixed, finite radius \varrho_…
The Lie algebra of the classical group SU(2) is constructed from two quon algebras for which the deformation parameter is a common root of unity. This construction leads to (i) a not very well-known polar decomposition of the ladder generators of the SU(2) Lie algebra and to (ii) an alternative to the (J,M) quantization scheme, viz., the (J,alpha) quantization scheme. The key ideas for developing the Wigner-Racah algebra of the group SU(2) in the (J,alpha) scheme are given. In particular, some properties of the coupling and recoupling coefficients as well as the Wigner-Eckart theorem in the (J…
The deformation quantization formalism is applied to the linearized gravitational field. Standard aspects of this formalism are worked out before the ground state Wigner functional is obtained. Finally, the propagator for the graviton is also discussed within the context of this formalism.
An explicit construction of all finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(1|n) in a Gel'fand-Zetlin basis is given. Particular attention is paid to the so-called star type I representations (``unitary representations''), and to a simple class of representations V(p), with p any positive integer. Then, the notion of Wigner Quantum Oscillators (WQOs) is recalled. In these quantum oscillator models, the unitary representations of gl(1|DN) are physical state spaces of the N-particle D-dimensional oscillator. So far, physical properties of gl(1|DN) WQOs were describe…
This work is concerned with a quantization of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillators from the point of view of their multi-Hamiltonian structures. It is shown that the 2n-th order oscillator with a simple spectrum is equivalent to the usual anisotropic n - dimensional oscillator.
An approach to quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator (DHO) is developed on the basis of a modified Bateman Lagrangian (MBL); thereby some quantum mechanical aspects of the DHO are clarified. We treat the energy operator for the DHO, in addition to the Hamiltonian operator that is determined from the MBL and corresponds to the total energy of the system. It is demonstrated that the energy eigenvalues of the DHO exponentially decrease with time and that transitions between the energy eigenstates occur in accordance with the Schrödinger equation. Also, it is pointed out that a new critic…
We extend the stochastic quantization method recently developed by Haba and Kleinert to non-autonomous mechanical systems, in the case of the time-dependent harmonic oscillator. In comparison with the autonomous case, the quantization procedure involves the solution of a nonlinear, auxiliary equation.
The Wigner phase-space distribution function provides the basis for Moyal's deformation quantization alternative to the more conventional Hilbert space and path integral quantizations. General features of time-independent Wigner functions are explored here, including the functional ("star") eigenvalue equations they satisfy; their projective orthogonality spectral properties; their Darboux ("supersymmetric") isospectral potential recursions; and their canonical transformations. These features are illustrated explicitly through simple solvable potentials: the harmonic oscillator, the linear pot…
In this paper, a new approach for constructing Lagrangians for driven and undriven linearly damped systems is proposed, by introducing a redefined time coordinate and an associated coordinate transformation to ensure that the resulting Lagrangian satisfies the Helmholtz conditions. The approach is applied to canonically quantize the damped harmonic oscillator and although it predicts an energy spectrum that decays at the same rate to previous models, unlike those approaches it recovers the classical critical damping condition, which determines transitions between energy eigenstates, and is the…
Second quantization of a classical nonrelativistic one-particle system as a deformation quantization of the Schrodinger spinless field is considered. Under the assumption that the phase space of the Schrodinger field is $C^{\infty}$, both, the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal and Berezin deformation quantizations are discussed and compared. Then the geometric quantum mechanics is also quantized using the Berezin method under the assumption that the phase space is $CP^{\infty}$ endowed with the Fubini-Study Kahlerian metric. Finally, the Wigner function for an arbitrary particle state and its evolution equati…
