The standard algorithm for generating a random permutation gives rise to an obvious permutation statistic $\stat$ that is readily seen to be Mahonian. We give evidence showing that it is not equal to any previously published statistic. Nor does its joint distribution with the standard Eulerian statistics $\des$ and $\exc$ appear to coincide with any known Euler-Mahonian pair.
A general construction of Skandera yields an Eulerian partner $\ska$ such that $(\ska, \stat)$ is equidistributed with $(\des, \maj)$. However $\ska$ itself appears not to be a known Eulerian statistic.

A Mahonian d-function is a Mahonian statistic that can be expressed as a linear combination of vincular pattern statistics of length at most d. Babson and Steingrimsson classified all Mahonian 3-functions up to trivial bijections and identified many of them with well-known Mahonian statistics in the literature. We prove a host of Mahonian 3-function equidistributions over pattern avoiding sets of permutations. Tools used include block decomposition, Dyck paths and generating functions.
In 2000 Babson and Steingr{\'ı}msson introduced the notion of vincular patterns in permutations. They shown that essentially all well-known Mahonian permutation statistics can be written as combinations of such patterns. Also, they proved and conjectured that other combinations of vincular patterns are still Mahonian. These conjectures were proved later: by Foata and Zeilberger in 2001, and by Foata and Randrianarivony in 2006. In this paper we give an alternative proof of some of these results. Our approach is based on permutation codes which, like Lehmer's code, map bijectively permutations …
We study the generating polynomial of the flag major index with each one-dimensional character, called signed Mahonian polynomial, over the colored permutation group, the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. Using the insertion lemma of Han and Haglund-Loehr-Remmel and a signed extension established by Eu et al., we derive the signed Mahonian polynomial over the quotients of parabolic subgroups of the colored permutation group, for a variety of systems of coset representatives in terms of subsequence restrictions. This generalizes the related work over parabolic quotients…
The inversion number and the major index are equidistributed on the symmetric group. This is a classical result, first proved by MacMahon, then by Foata by means of a combinatorial bijection. Ever since many refinements have been derived, which consist of adding new statistics, or replacing integral-valued statistics by set-valued ones. See the works by Foata-Schutzenberger, Skandera, Foata-Han and more recently by Hivert-Novelli-Thibon. In the present paper we derive a general equidistribution property on Euler-Mahonian set-valued statistics on permutations, which unifies the above four refin…
Consider the regular representation of the sum over all permutations weighted by the sum of their descent, inversion, and fixed point multinomials. We compute the spectrum and the multiplicities of its elements of that matrix. Note that those multinomial statistics allow to apply the result on several permutation statistics like the number of fixed points, of descents, of inversions, and the major index at the same time.
We give a direct combinatorial proof of the equidistribution of two pairs of permutation statistics, (des, aid) and (lec, inv), which have been previously shown to have the same joint distribution as (exc, maj), the major index and the number of excedances of a permutation. Moreover, the triple (pix, lec, inv) was shown to have the same distribution as (fix, exc, maj), where fix is the number of fixed points of a permutation. We define a new statistic aix so that our bijection maps (pix, lec, inv) to (aix, des, aid). We also find an Eulerian partner das for a Mahonian statistic mix defined usi…
We prove that the pair of statistics (des, maj) on multiset permutations is equidistributed with the pair (stc, inv) on certain quotients of the symmetric group. We define the analogue of the statistic stc on multiset permutations, whose joint distribution with the inversions equals that of (des, maj). We extend the definition of the statistic stc to hyperoctahedral and even hyperoctahedral groups. Such functions, together with the Coxeter length, are equidistributed, respectively, with (ndes, nmaj) and (ddes, dmaj).
Babson and Steingr\'ımsson introduced generalized permutation patterns and showed that most of the Mahonian statistics in the literature can be expressed by the combination of generalized pattern functions. Particularly, they defined a new Mahonian statistic in terms of generalized pattern functions, which is denoted $stat$. Recently, Amini investigated the equidistributions of these Mahonian statistics over sets of pattern avoiding permutations. Moreover, he posed several conjectures. In this paper, we construct a bijection from $S_n(213)$ to $S_n(231)$, which maps the statistic $(maj, stat)$ …
We prove the equidistribution of several multistatistics over some classes of permutations avoiding a $3$-length pattern. We deduce the equidistribution, on the one hand of inv and foze" statistics, and on the other hand that of maj and makl statistics, over these classes of pattern avoiding permutations. Here inv and maj are the celebrated Mahonian statistics, foze" is one of the statistics defined in terms of generalized patterns in the 2000 pioneering paper of Babson and Steingrímsson, and makl is one of the statistics defined by Clarke, Steingrímsson and Zeng in 1997. These results solve s…
Björner and Wachs defined a major index for labeled plane forests and showed that it has the same distribution as the number of inversions. We define and study the distributions of a few other natural statistics on labeled forests. Specifically, we introduce the notions of bottom-to-top maxima, cyclic bottom-to-top maxima, sorting index, and cycle minima. Then we show that the pairs (inv, Bt-max), (sor, Cyc), and (maj, Cbt-max) are equidistributed. Our results extend the result of Björner and Wachs and generalize results for permutations. We also introduce analogous statistics for signed label…
In a recent paper, Regev and Roichman introduced the <_L order and the L-descent number statistic, des_L, on the group of colored permutations, C_a \wr S_n. Here we define the L-reverse major index statistic, rmaj_L, on the same group and study the distribution of des_L and the bi-statistic (des_L, rmaj_L). We obtain new wreath-product analogues of the Eulerian and q-Euler-Mahonian polynomials, and a generalization of Carlitz's identity.
A four-variable distribution on permutations is derived, with two dual combinatorial interpretations. The first one includes the number of fixed points "fix", the second the so-called "pix" statistic. This shows that the duality between derangements and desarrangements can be extended to the case of multivariable statistics. Several specializations are obtained, including the joint distribution of (des, exc), where "des" and "exc" stand for the number of descents and excedances, respectively.
Foata and Zeilberger defined the graphical major index, $\mathrm{maj}'_U$, and the graphical inversion index, $\mathrm{inv}'_U$, for words. These statistics are a generalization of the classical permutation statistics $\mathrm{maj}$ and $\mathrm{inv}$ indexed by directed graphs $U$. They showed that $\mathrm{maj}'_U$ and $\mathrm{inv}'_U$ are equidistributed over all rearrangement classes if and only if $U$ is bipartitional. In this paper we strengthen their result by showing that if $\mathrm{maj}'_U$ and $\mathrm{inv}'_U$ are equidistributed on a single rearrangement class then $U$ is essenti…
A relationship between signed Eulerian polynomials and the classical Eulerian polynomials on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ was given by Désarménien and Foata in 1992, and a refined version, called signed Euler-Mahonian identity, together with a bijective proof were proposed by Wachs in the same year. By generalizing this bijection, in this paper we extend the above results to the Coxeter groups of types $B_n$, $D_n$, and the complex reflection group $G(r,1,n)$, where the `sign' is taken to be any one-dimensional character. Some obtained identities can be further restricted on some particular set of permuta…
In 2000, Babson and Steingrímsson introduced the notion of what is now known as a permutation vincular pattern, and based on it they re-defined known Mahonian statistics and introduced new ones, proving or conjecturing their Mahonity. These conjectures were proved by Foata and Zeilberger in 2001, and by Foata and Randrianarivony in 2006. In 2010, Burstein refined some of these results by giving a bijection between permutations with a fixed value for the major index and those with the same value for STAT, where STAT is one of the statistics defined and proved to be Mahonian in the 2000 Babson a…
Laguerre histories (restricted or not) are certain weighted Motzkin paths with two types of level steps. They are, on one hand, in natural bijection with the set of permutations, and on the other hand, yield combinatorial interpretations for the moments of Laguerre polynomials via Flajolet's combinatorial theory of continued fractions. In this paper, we first introduce a reflection-like involution on restricted Laguerre histories. Then, we demonstrate its power by composing this involution with three bijections due to Fran\ccon-Viennot, Foata-Zeilberger, and Yan-Zhou-Lin, respectively. A host …
Recently, the second author studied an Eulerian statistic (called cover) in the context of convex polytopes, and proved an equal joint distribution of (cover, des) with (des, exc). In this paper, we present several direct bijective proofs that cover is Eulerian, and examine its generalizations and their Mahonian partners. We also present a quasi-symmetric function proof (suggested by Michelle Wachs) of the above equal joint distribution.
We consider quotients of the unit cube semigroup algebra by particular $\mathbb{Z}_r\wr S_n$-invariant ideals. Using Gröbner basis methods, we show that the resulting graded quotient algebra has a basis where each element is indexed by colored permutations $(π,ε)\in\mathbb{Z}_r\wr S_n$ and each element encodes the negative descent and negative major index statistics on $(π,ε)$. This gives an algebraic interpretation of these statistics which was previously unknown. This basis of the $\mathbb{Z}_r\wr S_n$-quotients allows us to recover certain combinatorial identities involving Euler-Mahonian d…
Permutations with bounded drop size, which we also call bounded permutations, was introduced by Chung, Claesson, Dukes and Graham. Petersen introduced a new Mahonian statistic the sorting index, which is denoted by $\sor$. Meanwhile, Wilson introduced the statistic $\DIS$, which turns out to satisfy that $\sor(σ)=\DIS(σ^{-1})$ for any permutation $σ$. In this paper, we maintain Petersen's method to deduce the generating functions of $(\inv, \lmax)$ and $(\DIS, \cyc)$ over bounded permutations to show their equidistribution. Moreover, the generating function of $\des$ over $213$-avoiding bounde…
In 2000, Babson and Steingrímsson generalized the notion of permutation patterns to the so-called vincular patterns, and they showed that many Mahonian statistics can be expressed as sums of vincular pattern occurrence statistics. STAT is one of such Mahonian statistics discoverd by them. In 2016, Kitaev and the third author introduced a words analogue of STAT and proved a joint equidistribution result involving two sextuple statistics on the whole set of words with fixed length and alphabet. Moreover, their computer experiments hinted at a finer involution on $R(w)$, the rearrangement class o…
We give a direct combinatorial proof of the $q,t$-symmetry relation $\tilde H_μ(X;q,t)=\tilde H_{μ'}(X;t,q)$ in the Macdonald polynomials $\tilde H_μ$ at the specialization $q=1$. The bijection demonstrates that the Macdonald inv statistic on the permutations of any given row of a Young diagram filling is Mahonian. Moreover, our bijection gives rise a family of new bijections on words that preserves the classical Mahonian inv statistic.
We prove that the Mahonian-Stirling pairs of permutation statistics $(\sor, \cyc)$ and $(\inv, \mathrm{rlmin})$ are equidistributed on the set of permutations that correspond to arrangements of $n$ non-atacking rooks on a Ferrers board with $n$ rows and $n$ columns. The proofs are combinatorial and use bijections between matchings and Dyck paths and a new statistic, sorting index for matchings, that we define. We also prove a refinement of this equidistribution result which describes the minimal elements in the permutation cycles and the right-to-left minimum letters. Moreover, we define a sor…
The Mahonian statistic is the number of inversions in a permutation of a multiset with $a_i$ elements of type $i$, $1\le i\le m$. The counting function for this statistic is the $q$ analog of the multinomial coefficient $\binom{a_1+...+a_m}{a_1,... a_m}$, and the probability generating function is the normalization of the latter. We give two proofs that the distribution is asymptotically normal. The first is {\it computer-assisted}, based on the method of moments. The Maple package {\tt MahonianStat}, available from the webpage of this article, can be used by the reader to perform experiments …
Connections between $q$-rook polynomials and matrices over finite fields are exploited to derive a new statistic for Garsia and Remmel's $q$-hit polynomial. Both this new statistic $mat$ and another statistic for the $q$-hit polynomial $ξ$ recently introduced by Dworkin are shown to induce different multiset Mahonian permutation statistics for any Ferrers board. In addition, for the triangular boards they are shown to generate different families of Euler-Mahonian statistics. For these boards the $ξ$ family includes Denert's statistic $den$, and gives a new proof of Foata and Zeilberger's Theor…
In a recent paper, Goyt and Sagan studied distributions of certain set partition statistics over pattern restricted sets of set partitions that were counted by the Fibonacci numbers. Their study produced a class of $q$-Fibonacci numbers, which they related to $q$-Fibonacci numbers studied by Carlitz and Cigler. In this paper we will study the distributions of some Mahonian statistics over pattern restricted sets of permutations. We will give bijective proofs connecting some of our $q$-Fibonacci numbers to those of Carlitz, Cigler, Goyt and Sagan. We encode these permutations as words and use a…
Any permutation statistic $f:\sym\to\CC$ may be represented uniquely as a, possibly infinite, linear combination of (classical) permutation patterns: $f= Σ_τλ_f(τ)τ$. To provide explicit expansions for certain statistics, we introduce a new type of permutation patterns that we call mesh patterns. Intuitively, an occurrence of the mesh pattern $p=(π,R)$ is an occurrence of the permutation pattern $π$ with additional restrictions specified by $R$ on the relative position of the entries of the occurrence. We show that, for any mesh pattern $p=(π,R)$, we have $λ_p(τ) = (-1)^{|τ|-|π|}p^{\star}(τ)$ …
We study new statistics on permutations that are variations on the descent and the inversion statistics. In particular, we consider the alternating descent set of a permutation sigma = sigma_1sigma_2...sigma_n defined as the set of indices i such that either i is odd and sigma_i > sigma_{i+1}, or i is even and sigma_i < sigma_{i+1}. We show that this statistic is equidistributed with the 3-descent set statistic on permutations sigma = sigma_1sigma_2...sigma_{n+1} with sigma_1 = 1, defined to be the set of indices i such that the triple sigma_i sigma_{i+1} sigma_{i+2} forms an odd permutation o…
The distribution of certain Mahonian statistic (called $\mathrm{BAST}$) introduced by Babson and Steingrímsson over the set of permutations that avoid vincular pattern $1\underline{32}$, is shown bijectively to match the distribution of major index over the same set. This new layer of equidistribution is then applied to give alternative interpretations of two related $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind, studied by Carlitz and Gould. Moreover, extensions to an Euler-Mahonian statistic over ordered set partitions, and to statistics over ordered multiset partitions present themselves naturall…
Let S_n denote the symmetric group of all permutations of the set {1, 2, ...,n} and let S = \cup_{n\ge0} S_n. If Pi is a set of permutations, then we let Av_n(Pi) be the set of permutations in S_n which avoid every permutation of Pi in the sense of pattern avoidance. One of the celebrated notions in pattern theory is that of Wilf-equivalence, where Pi and Pi' are Wilf equivalent if #Av_n(Pi)=#Av_n(Pi') for all n\ge0. In a recent paper, Sagan and Savage proposed studying a q-analogue of this concept defined as follows. Suppose st:S->N is a permutation statistic where N represents the nonnegativ…
Using the notion of Mahonian statistic on acyclic posets, we introduce a $q$-analogue of the $h$-polynomial of a simple generalized permutohedron. We focus primarily on the case of nestohedra and on explicit computations for many interesting examples, such as $S_n$-invariant nestohedra, graph associahedra, and Stanley--Pitman polytopes. For the usual (Stasheff) associahedron, our generalization yields an alternative $q$-analogue to the well-studied Narayana numbers.
In the combinatorial study of the coefficients of a bivariate polynomial that generalizes both the length and the reflection length generating functions for finite Coxeter groups, Petersen introduced a new Mahonian statistic $sor$, called the sorting index. Petersen proved that the pairs of statistics $(sor, cyc)$ and $(inv,rl\textrm{-}min)$ have the same joint distribution over the symmetric group, and asked for a combinatorial proof of this fact. In answer to the question of Petersen, we observe a connection between the sorting index and the B-code of a permutation defined by Foata and Han, a…
We introduce a family of quasisymmetric functions called {\em Eulerian quasisymmetric functions}, which have the property of specializing to enumerators for the joint distribution of the permutation statistics, major index and excedance number on permutations of fixed cycle type. This family is analogous to a family of quasisymmetric functions that Gessel and Reutenauer used to study the joint distribution of major index and descent number on permutations of fixed cycle type. Our central result is a formula for the generating function for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which specialize…

Arc permutations, which were originally introduced in the study of triangulations and characters, have recently been shown to have interesting combinatorial properties. The first part of this paper continues their study by providing signed enumeration formulas with respect to their descent set and major index. Next, we generalize the notion of arc permutations to the hyperoctahedral group in two different directions. We show that these extensions to type $B$ carry interesting analogues of the properties of type $A$ arc permutations, such as characterizations by pattern avoidance, and elegant u…
In the set of all patterns in $S_n$, it is clear that each k-pattern occurs equally often. If we instead restrict to the class of permutations avoiding a specific pattern, the situation quickly becomes more interesting. Miklós Bóna recently proved that, surprisingly, if we consider the class of permutations avoiding the pattern 132, all other non-monotone patterns of length 3 are equally common. In this paper we examine the class $\Av (123)$, and give exact formula for the occurrences of each length 3 pattern. While this class does not break down as nicely as $\Av (132)$, we find some interest…
We use an interesting result of probabilistic flavor concerning the product of two permutations consisting of one cycle each to find an explicit formula for the average number of block interchanges needed to sort a permutation of length $n$.
Taking transposes of Standard Young Tableaux defines a natural involution on the set $I(n)$ of involutions of length $n$ via the the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. In some cases, this involution can be defined without resorting to the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. As a byproduct, we get an interesting generalization of layered permutations.
Binomial Eulerian polynomials first appeared in work of Postnikov, Reiner and Williams on the face enumeration of generalized permutohedra. They are $γ$-positive (in particular, palindromic and unimodal) polynomials which can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes and which admit interesting Schur $γ$-positive symmetric function generalizations. This paper introduces analogues of these polynomials for $r$-colored permutations with similar properties and uncovers some new instances of equivariant $γ$-positivity in geometric combinatorics.
A generalized Catalan matrix $(a_{n,k})_{n,k\ge 0}$ is generated by two seed sequences $\mathbf{s}=(s_0,s_1,\ldots)$ and $\mathbf{t}=(t_1,t_2,\ldots)$ together with a recurrence relation. By taking $s_\ell=2\ell+1$ and $t_\ell=\ell^2$ we can interpret $a_{n,k}$ as the number of partial permutations, which are $n\times n$ $0,1$-matrices of $k$ zero rows with at most one $1$ in each row or column. In this paper we prove that most of fundamental statistics and some set-valued statistics on permutations can also be defined on partial permutations and be encoded in the seed sequences. Results on tw…
We study maps on the set of permutations of n generated by the Rényi-Foata map intertwined with other dihedral symmetries (of a permutation considered as a 0-1 matrix). Iterating these maps leads to dynamical systems that in some cases exhibit interesting orbit structures, e.g., every orbit size being a power of two, and homomesic statistics (ones which have the same average over each orbit). In particular, the number of fixed points (aka 1-cycles) of a permutation appears to be homomesic with respect to three of these maps, even in one case where the orbit structures are far from nice. For th…
Permutation tableaux are combinatorial objects related with permutations and various statistics on them. They appeared in connection with total positivity in Grassmannians, and stationary probabilities in a PASEP model. In particular they gave rise to an interesting q-analog of Eulerian numbers. The purpose of this article is to study some combinatorial properties of type B permutation tableaux, defined by Lam and Williams, and links with signed permutation statistics. We show that many of the tools used for permutation tableaux generalize in this case, including: the Matrix Ansatz (a method o…
The $k$-arrangements are permutations whose fixed points are $k$-colored. We prove enumerative results related to statistics and patterns on $k$-arrangements, confirming several conjectures by Blitvić and Steingrímsson. In particular, one of their conjectures regarding the equdistribution of the number of descents over the derangement form and the permutation form of $k$-arrangements is strengthened in two interesting ways. Moreover, as one application of the so-called Decrease Value Theorem, we calculate the generating function for a symmetric pair of Eulerian statistics over permutations ari…
The subject of pattern avoiding permutations has its roots in computer science, namely in the problem of sorting a permutation through a stack. A formula for the number of permutations of length n that can be sorted by passing it twice through a stack (where the letters on the stack have to be in increasing order) was conjectured by West, and later proved by Zeilberger. Goulden and West found a bijection from such permutations to nonseparable planar maps, and later, Jacquard and Schaeffer presented a bijection from these planar maps to certain labeled plane trees, called beta(1,0)-trees. Using…
