Connections between $q$-rook polynomials and matrices over finite fields are exploited to derive a new statistic for Garsia and Remmel's $q$-hit polynomial. Both this new statistic $mat$ and another statistic for the $q$-hit polynomial $ξ$ recently introduced by Dworkin are shown to induce different multiset Mahonian permutation statistics for any Ferrers board. In addition, for the triangular boards they are shown to generate different families of Euler-Mahonian statistics. For these boards the $ξ$ family includes Denert's statistic $den$, and gives a new proof of Foata and Zeilberger's Theorem that $(exc, den)$ is jointly distributed with $(des, maj)$. The $mat$ family appears to be new. A proof is also given that the $q$-hit polynomials are symmetric and unimodal.
Combinatorial formulas expressing cyclic rook polynomials and cyclic permanents of rectangular matrices in terms of expansions along rows are presented
In this paper we give a generalization created by the author of the theory of rook polynomials and permanents of circulants, Toeplits matrices and their submatrices.
The set of n by n upper-triangular nilpotent matrices with entries in a finite field F_q has Jordan canonical forms indexed by partitions lambda of n. We present a combinatorial formula for computing the number F_λ(q) of matrices of Jordan type lambda as a weighted sum over standard Young tableaux. We also study a connection between these matrices and non-attacking rook placements, which leads to a refinement of the formula for F_λ(q).
Rook polynomials are a powerful tool in the theory of restricted permutations. It is known that the rook polynomial of any board can be computed recursively, using a cell decomposition technique of Riordan. In this paper, we give a new decomposition theorem, which yields a more efficient algorithm for computing the rook polynomial. We show that, in the worst case, this block decomposition algorithm is equivalent to Riordan's method.
We study a family of polynomials associated with ascent-descent statistics on labeled rooted plane k-ary trees introduced by Gessel, from a rook-theoretic perspective. We generalize the excedance statistic on permutations to maximal nonattacking rook placements on certain rectangular boards by decomposing them into boards of staircase shape. We then relate the number of maximal nonattacking rook placements on certain skew boards to the number of regions in extended Linial arrangements by establishing a relation between the factorial polynomial of those boards to the characteristic polynomial o…
Rook polynomials have been studied extensively since 1946, principally as a method for enumerating restricted permutations. However, they have also been shown to have many fruitful connections with other areas of mathematics, including graph theory, hypergeometric series, and algebraic geometry. It is known that the rook polynomial of any board can be computed recursively. The naturally arising inverse question -- given a polynomial, what board (if any) is associated with it? -- remains open. In this paper, we solve the inverse problem completely for the class of Ferrers boards, and show that …
Let $X$ be a convex polyomino such that its vertex set is a sublattice of $\mathbb{N}^2$. Let $\Bbbk[X]$ be the toric ring (over a field $\Bbbk$) associated to $X$ in the sense of Qureshi, \emph{J. Algebra}, 2012. Write the Hilbert series of $\Bbbk[X]$ as $(1 + h_1 t + h_2 t^2 + \cdots )/(1-t)^{\dim(\Bbbk[X])}$. For $k \in \mathbb{N}$, let $r_k$ be the number of configurations in $X$ with $k$ pairwise non-attacking rooks. We show that $h_2 < r_2$ if $X$ is not a thin polyomino. This partially confirms a conjectured characterization of thin polyominoes by Rinaldo and Romeo, \emph{J. Algebraic C…
Rook theory has been investigated by many people since its introduction by Kaplansky and Riordan in 1946. Goldman, Joichi and White in 1975 showed that the sum over $k$ of the product of the $(n-k)$-th rook numbers multiplied by the $k$-th falling factorial polynomials factorize into a product. In the sequel, different types of generalizations and analogues of this product formula have been derived by various authors. In 2008, Miceli and Remmel constructed a rook theory model involving augmented rook boards in which they showed the validity of a general product formula which can be specialized…
We characterise the permutations pi such that the elements in the closed lower Bruhat interval [id,pi] of the symmetric group correspond to non-taking rook configurations on a skew Ferrers board. It turns out that these are exactly the permutations pi such that [id,pi] corresponds to a flag manifold defined by inclusions, studied by Gasharov and Reiner. Our characterisation connects the Poincare polynomials (rank-generating function) of Bruhat intervals with q-rook polynomials, and we are able to compute the Poincare polynomial of some particularly interesting intervals in the finite Weyl grou…
We study the row-space partition and the pivot partition on the matrix space $\mathbb{F}_q^{n \times m}$. We show that both these partitions are reflexive and that the row-space partition is self-dual. Moreover, using various combinatorial methods, we explicitly compute the Krawtchouk coefficients associated with these partitions. This establishes MacWilliams-type identities for the row-space and pivot enumerators of linear rank-metric codes. We then generalize the Singleton-like bound for rank-metric codes, and introduce two new concepts of code extremality. Both of them generalize the notion…
In 2009, Etzion and Siberstein proposed a conjecture on the largest dimension of a linear space of matrices over a finite field in which all nonzero matrices are supported on a Ferrers diagram and have rank bounded below by a given integer. Although several cases of the conjecture have been established in the past decade, proving or disproving it remains to date a wide open problem. In this paper, we take a new look at the Etzion-Siberstein Conjecture, investigating its connection with rook theory. Our results show that the combinatorics behind this open problem is closely linked to the theory…
Matrices over a finite field having fixed rank and restricted support are a natural $q$-analogue of rook placements on a board. We develop this $q$-rook theory by defining a corresponding analogue of the hit numbers. Using tools from coding theory, we show that these $q$-hit and $q$-rook numbers obey a variety of identities analogous to the classical case. We also explore connections to earlier $q$-analogues of rook theory, as well as settling a polynomiality conjecture and finding a counterexample of a positivity conjecture of the authors and Klein.
The chromatic symmetric function (CSF) of Dyck paths of Stanley and its Shareshian-Wachs $q$-analogue have important connections to Hessenberg varieties, diagonal harmonics and LLT polynomials. In the, so called, abelian case they are also curiously related to placements of non-attacking rooks by results of Stanley-Stembridge (1993) and Guay-Paquet (2013). For the $q$-analogue, these results have been generalized by Abreu-Nigro (2020) and Guay-Paquet (private communication), using $q$-hit numbers. Among our main results is a new proof of Guay-Paquet's elegant identity expressing the $q$-CSFs i…
We consider the problem of finding the number of matrices over a finite field with a certain rank and with support that avoids a subset of the entries. These matrices are a q-analogue of permutations with restricted positions (i.e., rook placements). For general sets of entries these numbers of matrices are not polynomials in q (Stembridge 98); however, when the set of entries is a Young diagram, the numbers, up to a power of q-1, are polynomials with nonnegative coefficients (Haglund 98). In this paper, we give a number of conditions under which these numbers are polynomials in q, or even pol…
In this paper, we study the characters of two classes of P-polynomial table algebras using tridiagonal matrices. To this end, we obtain some results about the eigen-structure of special tridiagonal matrices. We also find a recursive relation for the characteristic polynomial of the first intersection matrix of P-polynomial table algebras by means of LU factorization.
A new class of structured matrices is presented and a closed form formula for their determinant is established. This formula has strong connections with the one for Vandermonde matrices.
We present a simple and convenient analytical formula for efficient exact computation of the hafnian of Toeplitz matrices of a special type. An interpretation of the obtained results is given in the language of perfect matchings and Bessel polynomials.
In this note we show that the degree of the interpolation polynomial for equidistant base points is characterized by the regularity of matrices of combinatorical type.
We give recurrence relations for any family of generalized Appell polynomials unifying so some known recurrences of many classical sequences of polynomials. Our main tool to get our goal is the Riordan group. We use the product of Riordan matrices to interpret some relationships between different families of polynomials. Moreover using the Hadamard product of series we get a general recurrence relation for the polynomial sequences associated to the so called generalized umbral calculus.
The characteristic polynomials of the adjacency matrix of line graphs of caterpillars and then the characteristic polynomials of their Laplacian or signless Laplacian matrices are characterized, using recursive formulas. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied on the determination of upper and lower bounds on the algebraic connectivity of these graphs.
The ordinary generating function of the number of complete subgraphs (cliques) of $G$, denoted by $C(G,x)$, is called the The clique polynomial of the graph $G$. In this paper, we first introduce some \emph{clique} incidence matrices associated by a simple graph $G$ as a generalization of the classical vertex-edge incidence matrix of $G$. Then, using these clique incidence matrices, we obtain two clique-counting identities that can be used for deriving two combinatorial formulas for the first and the second derivatives of clique polynomials. Finally, we conclude the paper with several open que…
In this paper we illustrate by some examples the connection between the number of solutions of polynomial equations satisfying degree conditions and the number of rank I matrices related to persymmetric matrices.
In this paper, we give two new coding algorithms by means of right circulant matrices with elements generalized Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials. For this purpose, we study basic properties of right circulant matrices using generalized Fibonacci polynomials $F_{p,q,n}\left( x\right) $, generalized Lucas polynomials $L_{p,q,n}\left( x\right) $ and geometric sequences.
We discuss several conjectures about the real-rootedness of polynomials whose coefficients are determinants of coefficients of a real-rooted polynomial. We also consider some questions about matrices generalizing totally positive matrices, namely totally stable matrices and totally upper matrices.
It has been shown recently that the limit moments of $W(n)=B(n)B^{*}(n)$, where B(n) is a product of $p$ independent rectangular random matrices, are certain homogenous polynomials in the asymptotic dimensions of these matrices. Using the combinatorics of noncrossing partitions, we explicitly determine these polynomials and show that they are closely related to polynomials which can be viewed as multivariate Fuss-Narayana polynomials. Using this result, we compute the moments of the n-fold free multiplicative convolution of Marchenko-Pastur distributions with arbitrary shape parameters.
We give an easy algorithm which calculates the generating function of the cocharacter sequence of the T-ideal of the polynomial identities of the algebra of upper triangular matrices over a field of characteristic zero. Applying this algorithm we have found the explicit form of the multiplicities in two cases: (i) for the "largest" partitions; (ii) for matrices of small size and for all partitions.
We investigate polynomials, called m-polynomials, whose generator polynomial has coefficients that can be arranged as a matrix, where q is a positive integer greater than one. Orthogonality relations are established and coefficients are obtained for the expansion of a polynomial in terms of m-polynomials. We conclude this article by an implementation in MATHEMATICA of m-polynomials and the results obtained for them.
We give an algorithm which calculates the generating function of the cocharacter sequence of the polynomial identities of the algebra of upper block triangular (p+2q) x (p+2q) matrices over a field of characteristic zero with diagonal consisting of p copies of 1 x 1 and q copies of 2 x 2 matrices. We have found the explicit form of the multiplicities and their asymptotic behaviour for small values of p and q.
We show that for every subset $E$ of positive density in the set of integer square-matrices with zero traces, there exists an integer $k \geq 1$ such that the set of characteristic polynomials of matrices in $E-E$ contains the set of \emph{all} characteristic polynomials of integer matrices with zero traces and entries divisible by $k$. Our theorem is derived from results by Benoist-Quint on measure rigidity for actions on homogeneous spaces.
