We give recurrence relations for any family of generalized Appell polynomials unifying so some known recurrences of many classical sequences of polynomials. Our main tool to get our goal is the Riordan group. We use the product of Riordan matrices to interpret some relationships between different families of polynomials. Moreover using the Hadamard product of series we get a general recurrence relation for the polynomial sequences associated to the so called generalized umbral calculus.
We show that the Catalan-Schroeder convolution recurrences and their higher order generalizations can be solved using Riordan arrays and the Catalan numbers. We investigate the Hankel transforms of many of the recurrence solutions, and indicate that Somos $4$ sequences often arise. We exhibit relations between recurrences, Riordan arrays, elliptic curves and Somos $4$ sequences. We furthermore indicate how one can associate a family of orthogonal polynomials to a point on an elliptic curve, whose moments are related to recurrence solutions.
Riordan paths are Motzkin paths without horizontal steps on the x-axis. We establish a correspondence between Riordan paths and $(321,3\bar{1}42)$-avoiding derangements. We also present a combinatorial proof of a recurrence relation for the Riordan numbers in the spirit of the Foata-Zeilberger proof of a recurrence relation on the Schröder numbers.
We approach Riordan arrays and their generalizations via umbral symbolic methods. This new approach allows us to derive fundamental aspects of the theory of Riordan arrays as immediate consequences of the umbral version of the classical Abel's identity for polynomials. In particular, we obtain a novel non-recursive formula for Riordan arrays and derive, from this new formula, some known recurrences and a new recurrence relation for Riordan arrays.
We describe how the reversion of a series is related to convolutional recurrence relations for the series, and we place this relationship in the context of Riordan arrays. As an example of the approach, we give new recurrence relations for the sequences of Patalan numbers. We also consider the concepts of recursive matrices and dual Riordan arrays, and their application to previous work on the super Patalan numbers.
Every ordinary Riordan array contains two naturally embedded Riordan arrays. We explore this phenomenon, and we compare it to the situation for certain moment matrices of families of orthogonal polynomials.
We defined two type $B$-sequences of Riordan arrays and present the $A$-sequence characterization and $Z$-sequence characterization of the Riordan matrices with two type $B$-sequences. The subgroups characterized by $A$-sequences and $Z$-sequences are studied. The application of the sequence characterization to the RNA type matrices is discussed. Finally, we investigate the $A$-, $Z$-, and $B$-sequences of the Pascal like Riordan matrices.
We define and characterize the $f$-matrices associated to Pascal-like matrices that are defined by ordinary and exponential Riordan arrays. These generalize the face matrices of simplices and hypercubes. Their generating functions can be expressed simply in terms of continued fractions, which are shown to be transformations of the generating functions of the corresponding $γ$- and $h$-matrices.
Generalized Pascal matrix whose elements are generalized binomial coefficients is included in the group of generalized Riordan arrays. There is a special set of generalized Riordan arrays defined by parameter $q$. If $q=0$, they are ordinary Riordan arrays, if $q=1$, they are exponential Riordan arrays. In other cases, except $q=-1$, they are arrays associated with the $q$-binomial coefficients as well as the exponential Riordan arrays are associated with the ordinary binomial coefficients. Case $q=-1$ does not fit into the concept of generalized Riordan arrays, but it is necessary to expand f…
We examine a result of Basor and Ehrhardt concerning Hankel and Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices, within the context of the Riordan group of lower-triangular matrices. This allows us to determine the LDU decomposition of certain symmetric Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices. We also determine the generating functions and Hankel transforms of associated sequences.

We translate the concept of succession rule and the ECO method into matrix notation, introducing the concept of a production matrix. This allows us to combine our method with other enumeration techniques using matrices, such as the method of Riordan matrices. Finally we treat the case of rational production matrices, i.e. those leading to rational generating functions.
Using the theory of exponential Riordan arrays and orthogonal polynomials, we demonstrate that the "descending power" Eulerian polynomials, and their once shifted sequence, are moment sequences for simple families of orthogonal polynomials, which we characterize in terms of their three-term recurrence. We obtain the generating functions of the polynomial sequences in terms of continued fractions, and we also calculate their Hankel transforms.
We show that Laurent biorthogonal polynomials whose defining three-term recurrence have constant coefficients have coefficient arrays that are Riordan arrays. For each such family of Laurent biorthogonal polynomials we associate in a natural way a family of orthogonal polynomials. We also extend these results to a notion of generalized orthogonal polynomials whose recurrence depends on three parameters.
We characterize certain Riordan arrays by their $A$-matrices and $ρ$ sequences. We conjecture the form of a generic $A$-matrix which leads to Somos $4$ sequences. We find an $A$-matrix that produces a Riordan quasi-involution, and we study the $A$-matrices and $ρ$ sequences of the moment matrices of certain perturbed orthogonal polynomials.
We study a polynomial sequence $C_n(x|q)$ defined as a solution of a $q$-difference equation. This sequence, evaluated at $q$-integers, interpolates Carlitz-Riordan's $q$-ballot numbers. In the basis given by some kind of $q$-binomial coefficients, the coefficients are again some $q$-ballot numbers. We obtain in a combinatorial way another curious recurrence relation for these polynomials.
For a lower triangular matrix $(t_{n,k})$ we call the matrices with respective entries $(t_{2n-k,n})$ and $(t_{2n,n+k})$ the vertical and the horizontal halves. In this note, we discuss Riordan arrays whose halves are closely related to the Catalan matrices.
We define and characterize the $γ$-matrix associated to Pascal-like matrices that are defined by ordinary and exponential Riordan arrays. We also define and characterize the $γ$-matrix of the reversions of these triangles, in the case of ordinary Riordan arrays. We are led to the $γ$-matrices of a one-parameter family of generalized Narayana triangles. Thus these matrices generalize the matrix of $γ$-vectors of the associahedron. The principal tools used are the bivariate generating functions of the triangles and Jacobi continued fractions.
We define two notions of partial sums of a Riordan array, corresponding respectively to the partial sums of the rows and the partial sums of the columns of the Riordan array in question. We characterize the matrices that arise from these operations. On the one hand, we obtain a new Riordan array, while on the other hand, we obtain a rectangular array which has an inverse that is a lower Hessenberg matrix. We examine the structure of these Hessenberg matrices. We end with a generalization linked to the Fibonacci numbers and phyllotaxis.
Using the theory of exponential Riordan arrays, we show that the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials are moments for a paramaterized family of orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we show that the related Savage-Viswanathan polynomials are also moments for appropriate families of orthogonal polynomials. We provide continued fraction ordinary generating functions and Hankel transforms for these moments, as well as the three-term recurrences for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We provide formulas for the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials and the Savage-Viswanathan polynomials involving the Stirling nu…
Riordan matrices are infinite lower triangular matrices determined by a pair of formal power series over the real or complex field. These matrices have been mainly studied as combinatorial objects with an emphasis placed on the algebraic or combinatorial structure. The present paper contributes to the linear algebraic discussion with an analysis of Riordan matrices by means of the interaction of the properties of formal power series with the linear algebra. Specifically, it is shown that if a Riordan matrix $A$ is an $n\times n$ pseudo-involution then the singular values of $A$ must come in re…
A vertical recursive relation approach to Riordan arrays is induced, while the horizontal recursive relation is represented by $A$- and $Z$-sequences. This vertical recursive approach gives a way to represent the entries of a Riordan array $(g,f)$ in terms of a recursive linear combinations of the coefficients of $g$. A matrix representation of the vertical recursive relation is also given. The set of all those matrices forms a group, called the quasi-Riordan group. The extensions of the horizontal recursive relation and the vertical recursive relation in terms of $c$- and $C$- Riordan arrays …
In this paper, we use the theory of Riordan matrices to introduce the notion of an oriented Riordan graph. The oriented Riordan graphs are a far-reaching generalization of the well known and well studied Toeplitz oriented graphs and tournament. The main focus in this paper is the study of structural properties of the oriented Riordan graphs which includes a fundamental decomposition theorem and fractal property. Finally, we introduce the generalization of the oriented Riordan graph who is called a $p$-Riordan graph.
We present an approach to generalized Riordan arrays which is based on operations in one large group of lower triangular matrices. This allows for direct proofs of many properties of weighted Sheffer sequences, and shows that all the groups arising from different weights are isomorphic since they are conjugate. We also prove a result about the intersection of two generalized Riordan with different weights.
In this paper we find closed form for the generating function of powers of any non-degenerate second-order recurrence sequence, completing a study begun by Carlitz and Riordan in 1962. Moreover, we generalize a theorem of Horadam on partial sums involving such sequences. Also, we find closed forms for weighted (by binomial coefficients) partial sums of powers of any non-degenerate second-order recurrence sequences. As corollaries we give some known and seemingly unknown identities and derive some very interesting congruence relations involving Fibonacci and Lucas sequences.
Log-concavity and almost log-convexity of the cycle index polynomials were proved by Bender and Canfield [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 74 (1996)]. Schirmacher [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 85 (1999)] extended them to $q$-log-concavity and almost $q$-log-convexity. Motivated by these, we consider the stronger properties total positivity from the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix. By using exponential Riordan array methods, we give some criteria for total positivity of the triangular matrix of coefficients of the generalized cycle index polynomials, the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix of the polynomia…
In a first part, we are concerned with the relationships between polynomials in the two generators of the algebra of Heisenberg--Weyl, its Bargmann--Fock representation with differential operators and the associated one-parameter group.Upon this basis, the paper is then devoted to the groups of Riordan matrices associated to the related transformations of matrices (i.e. substitutions with prefunctions). Thereby, various properties are studied arising in Riordan arrays, in the Riordan group and, more specifically, in the `striped' Riordan subgroups; further, a striped quasigroup and a semigroup…
We present a parametric family of Riordan arrays which are obtained by multiplying any Riordan array with a generalized Pascal array. In particular, we focus on some interesting properties of one-parameter Catalan triangles. We obtain several combinatorial identities that involve two special Catalan matrices, the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, some periodic sequences, and the Fibonacci numbers.
Using the language of Riordan arrays, we look at two related iterative processes on matrices and determine which matrices are invariant under these processes. In a special case, the invariant sequences that arise are conjectured to have Hankel transforms that obey Somos-4 recurrences. A notion of eigentriangle for a number triangle emerges and examples are given, including a construction of the Takeuchi numbers.
This note provides formula for determinant and inverse of r-circulant matrices with general sequences of third order. In other words, the study combines many papers in the literature.
We point out how to use the classical characteristic method, that is used to solve quasilinear PDE's, to obtain the matrix exponential of some lower triangle infinite matrices. We use the Lie Frechet structure of the Riordan group described in [4]. After that we describe some linear dynamical systems in $\mathbb{K}[[x]]$ with a concrete involution being a symmetry or a time-reversal symmetry for them. We take this opportunity to assign some dynamical properties to the Pascal Triangle.
We study two matrices $N$ and $M$ defined by the parameters of equivalent $S$- and $J$-continued fraction expansions, and compare them by examining the product $N^{-1}M$. Using examples based on the Catalan numbers, the little Schröder numbers and powers of $q$, we indicate that this matrix product is an object worthy of study. In the case of the little Schröder numbers, we find that the matrix $N$ has an interleaved structure based on two Riordan arrays.
We show how some special production matrices may be used to define families of generalized Eulerian triangles. We furthermore show that these generalized Eulerian triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomials which are the moments of families of orthogonal polynomials. Using the previously defined $\mathcal{T}$ transform, we associate these generalized Eulerian triangles to triangles defined by Catalan generating functions. Again, these new triangles are the coefficient arrays of polynomial moment sequences. The main tools used are the Sumudu transform, Jacobi continued fractions and Rio…
In this paper, we consider ordered set partitions obtained by imposing conditions on the size of the lists, and such that the first $r$ elements are in distinct blocks, respectively. We introduce a generalization of the Lah numbers. For this new combinatorial sequence we derive its exponential generating function, some recurrence relations, and combinatorial identities. We prove and present results using combinatorial arguments, generating functions, the symbolic method and Riordan arrays. For some specific cases we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the inverse matrix of the generaliz…
We use Riordan array theory to give characterizations of the Borel triangle and its associated polynomial sequence. We show that the Borel polynomials are the moment sequence for a family of orthogonal polynomials whose coefficient array is a Riordan array. The role of the Catalan matrix in defining the Borel triangle is examined. We generalize the Borel triangle to a family of two parameter triangles. Generating functions are expressed as Jacobi continued fractions, as well as the zeros of appropriate quadratic expressions. The Borel triangle is exhibited as a Hadamard product of matrices. We…
We exhibit a lower-triangular matrix of polynomials $T(a,c,d,e,f,g)$ in six indeterminates that appears empirically to be coefficientwise totally positive, and which includes as a special case the Eulerian triangle. We prove the coefficientwise total positivity of $T(a,c,0,e,0,0)$, which includes the reversed Stirling subset triangle.
A sequence inverse relationship can be defined by a pair of infinite inverse matrices. If the pair of matrices are the same, they define a dual relationship. Here presented is a unified approach to construct dual relationships via pseudo-involution of Riordan arrays. Then we give four dual relationships for Bernoulli numbers and Euler numbers, from which the corresponding dual sequences of Bernoulli polynomials and Euler polynomials are constructed. Some applications in the construction of identities of Bernoulli numbers and polynomials and Euler numbers and polynomials are discussed based on …
Using the language of Riordan arrays, we study a one-parameter family of orthogonal polynomials that we call the restricted Chebyshev-Boubaker polynomials. We characterize these polynomials in terms of the three term recurrences that they satisfy, and we study certain central sequences defined by their coefficient arrays. We give an integral representation for their moments, and we show that the Hankel transforms of these moments have a simple form. We show that the (sequence) Hankel transform of the row sums of the corresponding moment matrix is defined by a family of polynomials closely rela…
Alternating sign triangles were introduced by Carroll and Speyer in relation to cube recurrence, by analogy to alternating sign matrices for octahedron recurrence. In this paper, we prove the connectivity of alternating sign triangles, which is analogous to the connectivity of alternating sign matrices.
Wall published a paper in 1960 on the Fibonacci sequence where he derived many results concerning the period and prime power divisibility modulo m. His periodicity results have been generalized to second order linear recurrences. Here we study the sequences generated by such recurrences, with starting values of {0,1}: among other things, we derive new prime power divisibility results, derive the period by new methods, establish new identities, show derivations involving powers of matrices generated by these general recurrences, etc.
Alternating sign triangles were introduced by Carroll and Speyer in relation to cube recurrence, by analogy to alternating sign matrices for octahedron recurrence. Permutation triangles are the alternating sign triangles whose entries are either 0 or 1, by analogy with permutation matrices. In this paper, we prove a simple characterization of permutation triangles, originally conjectured by Glick. We will also prove some properties of alternating sign triangles.
Motivated by the problem of giving a bijective proof of the fact that the birational RSK correspondence satisfies the octahedron recurrence, we define interlacing networks, which are certain planar directed networks with a rigid structure of sources and sinks. We describe an involution that swaps paths in these networks and leads to Plücker-like three-term relations among path weights. We show that indeed these relations follow from the Plücker relations in the Grassmannian together with some simple rank properties of the matrices corresponding to our interlacing networks. The space of matrice…
We examine relationships between two minors of order n of some matrices of n rows and n+r columns. This is done through a class of determinants, here called $n$-determinants, the investigation of which is our objective. We prove that 1-determinants are the upper Hessenberg determinants. In particular, we state several 1-determinants each of which equals a Fibonacci number. We also derive relationships among terms of sequences defined by the same recurrence equation independently of the initial conditions. A result generalizing the formula for the product of two determinants is obtained. Finall…
The goal of this paper is to present an algebraic approach to the basic results of the theory of linear recurrence relations. This approach is based on the ideas from the theory of representations of one endomorphisms (a special case of which is well known as the theory of the Jordan normal form of matrices). The notion of the divided derivatives, an analogue of the divided powers, turned out to be crucial for proving the results in a natural way and in their natural generality. The final form of our methods was influenced by the the umbral calculus of G.-C. Rota.
We look for graph polynomials which satisfy recurrence relations on three kinds of edge elimination: edge deletion, edge contraction and deletion of edges together with their end points. Like in the case of deletion and contraction only (W. Tutte, 1954), it turns out that there is a most general polynomial satisfying such recurrence relations, which we call $ξ(G,x,y,z)$. We show that the new polynomial simultaneously generalizes the Tutte polynomial, the matching polynomial, and the recent generalization of the chromatic polynomial proposed by K.Dohmen, A.Pönitz and P.Tittman (2003), including…
We present combinatorial and analytical results concerning a Sheffer sequence with an exponential generating function of the form $G(s,z)=e^{czs+αz^{2}+βz^{4}}$, where $α, β, c \in \mathbb{R}$ with $β<0$ and $c\neq 0$. We demonstrate that the zeros of all polynomials in such a Sheffer sequence are either real, or purely imaginary. Additionally, using the properties of Riordan matrices we show that our Sheffer sequence satisfies a three-term recurrence relation of order 4, and we also exhibit a connection between the coefficients of these Sheffer polynomials and the number of nodes with a a giv…
In some matrix formations, factorizations and transformations, we need special matrices with some properties and we wish that such matrices should be easily and simply generated and of integers. In this paper, we propose a zero-sum rule for the recurrence relations to construct integer triangles as triangular matrices with involutory, idempotent, nilpotent and unipotent properties, especially nilpotent and unipotent matrices of index 2. With the zero-sum rule we also give the conditions for the special matrices and the generic methods for the generation of those special matrices. The generated…
