The Mahonian statistic is the number of inversions in a permutation of a multiset with $a_i$ elements of type $i$, $1\le i\le m$. The counting function for this statistic is the $q$ analog of the multinomial coefficient $\binom{a_1+...+a_m}{a_1,... a_m}$, and the probability generating function is the normalization of the latter. We give two proofs that the distribution is asymptotically normal. The first is {\it computer-assisted}, based on the method of moments. The Maple package {\tt MahonianStat}, available from the webpage of this article, can be used by the reader to perform experiments and calculations. Our second proof uses characteristic functions. We then take up the study of a local limit theorem to accompany our central limit theorem. Here our result is less general, and we must be content with a conjecture about further work. Our local limit theorem permits us to conclude that the coeffiecients of the $q$-multinomial are log-concave, provided one stays near the center (where the largest coefficients reside.)
In 2000, Babson and Steingrímsson generalized the notion of permutation patterns to the so-called vincular patterns, and they showed that many Mahonian statistics can be expressed as sums of vincular pattern occurrence statistics. STAT is one of such Mahonian statistics discoverd by them. In 2016, Kitaev and the third author introduced a words analogue of STAT and proved a joint equidistribution result involving two sextuple statistics on the whole set of words with fixed length and alphabet. Moreover, their computer experiments hinted at a finer involution on $R(w)$, the rearrangement class o…
We introduce the notion of a Mahonian pair. Consider the set, P^*, of all words having the positive integers as alphabet. Given finite subsets S,T of P^*, we say that (S,T) is a Mahonian pair if the distribution of the major index, maj, over S is the same as the distribution of the inversion number, inv, over T. So the well-known fact that maj and inv are equidistributed over the symmetric group, S_n, can be expressed by saying that (S_n,S_n) is a Mahonian pair. We investigate various Mahonian pairs (S,T) with S different from T. Our principal tool is Foata's fundamental bijection f: P^* -> P^…
In 2000, Babson and Steingrímsson introduced the notion of what is now known as a permutation vincular pattern, and based on it they re-defined known Mahonian statistics and introduced new ones, proving or conjecturing their Mahonity. These conjectures were proved by Foata and Zeilberger in 2001, and by Foata and Randrianarivony in 2006. In 2010, Burstein refined some of these results by giving a bijection between permutations with a fixed value for the major index and those with the same value for STAT, where STAT is one of the statistics defined and proved to be Mahonian in the 2000 Babson a…
Foata and Zeilberger defined the graphical major index, $\mathrm{maj}'_U$, and the graphical inversion index, $\mathrm{inv}'_U$, for words. These statistics are a generalization of the classical permutation statistics $\mathrm{maj}$ and $\mathrm{inv}$ indexed by directed graphs $U$. They showed that $\mathrm{maj}'_U$ and $\mathrm{inv}'_U$ are equidistributed over all rearrangement classes if and only if $U$ is bipartitional. In this paper we strengthen their result by showing that if $\mathrm{maj}'_U$ and $\mathrm{inv}'_U$ are equidistributed on a single rearrangement class then $U$ is essenti…
Two well known mahonian statistics on words are the inversion number and the major index. In 1996, Foata and Zeilberger introduced generalizations, parameterized by relations, of these statistics. In this paper, we study the statistics which can be written as a sum of these generalized statistics. This leads to generalizations of some classical results. In particular, we characterize all such statistics which are mahonian.
A partition of the set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ is a collection of disjoint nonempty subsets (or blocks) of $[n]$, whose union is $[n]$. In this paper we consider the following rarely used representation for set partitions: given a partition of $[n]$ with blocks $B_{1},B_{2},\ldots,B_{m}$ satisfying $\max B_{1}<\max B_{2}<\cdots<\max B_{m}$, we represent it by a word $w=w_{1}w_{2}\ldots w_{n}$ such that $i\in B_{w_{i}}$, $1\leq i\leq n$. We prove that the Mahonian statistics INV, MAJ, MAJ$_{d}$, $r$-MAJ, Z, DEN, MAK, MAD are all equidistributed on set partitions via this representation, and tha…
In a recent paper, Baxter and Zeilberger show that the two most important Mahonian statistics, the inversion number and the major index, are asymptotically independently normally distributed on permutations. In another recent paper, Canfield, Janson and Zeilberger prove the result, already known to statisticians, that the Mahonian distribution is asymptotically normal on words. This leaves one question unanswered: What, asymptotically, is the joint distribution of the inversion number and the major index on words? We answer this question by establishing convergence to a bivariate normal distri…
We give a direct combinatorial proof of the $q,t$-symmetry relation $\tilde H_μ(X;q,t)=\tilde H_{μ'}(X;t,q)$ in the Macdonald polynomials $\tilde H_μ$ at the specialization $q=1$. The bijection demonstrates that the Macdonald inv statistic on the permutations of any given row of a Young diagram filling is Mahonian. Moreover, our bijection gives rise a family of new bijections on words that preserves the classical Mahonian inv statistic.
We study statistics on ordered set partitions whose generating functions are related to $p,q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. The main purpose of this paper is to provide bijective proofs of all the conjectures of \stein (Arxiv:math.CO/0605670). Our basic idea is to encode ordered partitions by a kind of path diagrams and explore the rich combinatorial properties of the latter structure. We also give a partition version of MacMahon's theorem on the equidistribution of the statistics inversion number and major index on words.
We study the generalized Galois numbers which count flags of length r in N-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields. We prove that the coefficients of those polynomials are asymptotically Gaussian normally distributed as N becomes large. Furthermore, we interpret the generalized Galois numbers as weighted inversion statistics on the descent classes of the symmetric group on N elements and identify their asymptotic limit as the Mahonian inversion statistic when r approaches infinity. Finally, we apply our statements to derive further statistical aspects of generalized Rogers-Szegoe polynomi…
Doron Gepner's word statistics, that came up in his research in conformal field theory, is studied and it is conjectured that its scaled limiting distribution is the Logistic distribution. We support this by proving rigorously that the scaled limits of the first twelve moments do indeed converge to those of the Logistic distribution. This is surprising, since Gepner's statistics is a natural analog of the classical statistics called the number of inversion, that is known to be asymptotically normal.
In a recent paper, Goyt and Sagan studied distributions of certain set partition statistics over pattern restricted sets of set partitions that were counted by the Fibonacci numbers. Their study produced a class of $q$-Fibonacci numbers, which they related to $q$-Fibonacci numbers studied by Carlitz and Cigler. In this paper we will study the distributions of some Mahonian statistics over pattern restricted sets of permutations. We will give bijective proofs connecting some of our $q$-Fibonacci numbers to those of Carlitz, Cigler, Goyt and Sagan. We encode these permutations as words and use a…
Let a word be a sequence of $n$ i.i.d. integer random variables. The perimeter $P$ of the word is the number of edges of the word, seen as a polyomino. In this paper, we present a probabilistic approach to the computation of the moments of $P$. This is applied to uniform and geometric random variables. We also show that, asymptotically, the distribution of $P$ is Gaussian and, seen as a stochastic process, the perimeter converges in distribution to a Brownian motion
Recently Tracy and Widom conjectured [math.CO/9904042] and Johansson proved [math.CO/9906120] that the expected shape λof the semi-standard tableau produced by a random word in k letters is asymptotically the spectrum of a random traceless k by k GUE matrix. In this article we give two arguments for this fact. In the first argument, we realize the random matrix itself as a quantum random variable on the space of random words, if this space is viewed as a quantum state space. In the second argument, we show that the distribution of λis asymptotically given by the usual local limit theorem, but …
We investigate the behavior of the periods and border lengths of random words over a fixed alphabet. We show that the asymptotic probability that a random word has a given maximal border length $k$ is a constant, depending only on $k$ and the alphabet size $\ell$. We give a recurrence that allows us to determine these constants with any required precision. This also allows us to evaluate the expected period of a random word. For the binary case, the expected period is asymptotically about $n-1.641$. We also give explicit formulas for the probability that a random word is unbordered or has maxi…
