In this note, we use techniques from integrable systems to study relations between gauge theories. The Gauge/Bethe correspondence, introduced by Nekrasov and Shatashvili, identifies the supersymmetric ground states of an N=(2,2) supersymmetric gauge theory in two dimensions with the Bethe states of a quantum integrable system. We make use of this correspondence to relate three different quiver gauge theories which correspond to three different formulations of the Bethe equations of an integrable spin chain called the tJ model.
The Gauge/Bethe correspondence of Nekrasov and Shatashvili relates the spectrum of integrable spin chains to the ground states of supersymmetric gauge theories. Up to now, this correspondence has been an observation; the underlying reason for its existence remaining elusive. We argue here that geometrical representation theory is the mathematical foundation of the Gauge/Bethe correspondence, and it provides a framework to study families of gauge theories in a unified way.
We calculate partition function and correlation functions in A-twisted 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ theories and topologically twisted 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories containing adjoint chiral multiplet with particular choices of $R$-charges and the magnetic fluxes for flavor symmetries. According to Gauge-Bethe correspondence, they correspond to Heisenberg XXX and XXZ spin chain models. We identify the partition function as the inverse of the norm of the Bethe eigenstates. Correlation functions are identified as the coefficients of the expectation value of Baxter $Q$-operators. In addition, we consider…
We compute the topological partition function (twisted index) of $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(N)$ Chern-Simons theory with an adjoint chiral multiplet on $Σ_g \times S^1$. The localization technique shows that the underlying Frobenius algebra is the equivariant Verlinde algebra which is obtained from the canonical quantization of the complex Chern-Simons theory regularized by $U(1)$ equivariant parameter $t$. Our computation relies on a Bethe/Gauge correspondence which allows us to represent the equivariant Verlinde algebra in terms of the Hall-Littlewood polynomials $P_λ(x_B, t)$ with a specialization …
By incorporating higher-form symmetries, we propose a refined definition of the theories obtained by compactification of the 6d $(2,0)$ theory on a three-manifold $M_3$. This generalization is applicable to both the 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric reductions. An observable that is sensitive to the higher-form symmetries is the Witten index, which can be computed by counting solutions to a set of Bethe equations that are determined by $M_3$. This is carried out in detail for $M_3$ a Seifert manifold, where we compute a refined version of the Witten index. In the context of…
Bethe/gauge correspondence identifies supersymmetric vacua of massive gauge theories invariant under the two dimensional N=2 Poincare supersymmetry with the stationary states of some quantum integrable system. The supersymmetric theory can be twisted in a number of ways, producing a topological field theory. For these theories we compute the handle gluing operator H. We also discuss the Gaudin conjecture on the norm of Bethe states and its connection to H.
We introduce two-types of topologically twisted Chern-Simons-matter theories on the direct product of circle and genus-h Riemann surface (S^1 \times Σ_h). The partition functions of first model agrees with the partition functions of a generalizations of G/G gauged WZW model. We also find that correlation functions of Wilson loops in first type Chern-Simons-matter theory coincide with correlation functions of G elements in the generalization of G/G gauged WZW model. The partition function of this model also has nice interpretations as norms of eigen states of Hamiltonian in the quantum integrab…
In [1, 2], Nekrasov applied the Bethe/gauge correspondence to derive the $\mathfrak{su}\, (2)$ XXX spin-chain coordinate Bethe wavefunction from the IR limit of a 2D $\mathcal{N}=(2, 2)$ supersymmetric $A_1$ quiver gauge theory with an orbifold-type codimension-2 defect. Later, Bullimore, Kim and Lukowski implemented Nekrasov's construction at the level of the UV $A_1$ quiver gauge theory, recovered his result, and obtained further extensions of the Bethe/gauge correspondence [3]. In this work, we extend the construction of the defect to $A_M$ quiver gauge theories to obtain the $\mathfrak{su}…
Studying the scattering of excitations around a dynamical background has a long history in the context of integrable models. The Gubser-Klebanov-Polyakov string solution provides such a background for the string/gauge correspondence. Taking the conjectured all-loop asymptotic equations for the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence as the starting point, we derive the S-matrix and a set of spectral equations for the lowest-lying excitations. We find that these equations resemble closely the analogous equations for AdS_5/CFT_4, which are also discussed in this paper. At large values of the coupling constan…
We study the Gauge/Bethe correspondence for two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories associated with toric Calabi-Yau three-folds, whose BPS algebras have recently been identified as the quiver Yangians. We start with the crystal representations of the quiver Yangian, which are placed at each site of the spin chain. We then construct integrable models by combining the single-site crystals into crystal chains by a coproduct of the algebra, which we determine by a combination of representation-theoretical and gauge-theoretical arguments. For non-chiral quivers, we…
Bethe/Gauge correspondence as it is usually stated is ill-defined in five dimensions and needs a "non-perturbative" completion; a related problem also appears in three dimensions. It has been suggested that this problem, probably due to incompleteness of Omega background regularization in odd dimension, may be solved if we consider gauge theory on compact $S^5$ and $S^3$ geometries. We will develop this idea further by giving a full Bethe/Gauge correspondence dictionary on $S^5$ and $S^3$ focussing mainly on the eigenfunctions of (open and closed) relativistic 2-particle Toda chain and its qua…
We study the linear problem associated with modified affine Toda field equation for the Langlands dual $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}^\vee$, where $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$ is an untwisted affine Lie algebra. The connection coefficients for the asymptotic solutions of the linear problem are found to correspond to the $Q$-functions for $\mathfrak{g}$-type quantum integrable models. The $ψ$-system for the solutions associated with the fundamental representations of $\mathfrak{g}$ leads to Bethe ansatz equations associated with the affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$. We also study the $A^{(2)}_{2r}$ affine …
We present a string theory realization for the correspondence between quantum integrable models and supersymmetric gauge theories. The quantization results from summing the effects of fundamental strings winding around a compact direction. We discuss the examples of the XXZ gauge/Bethe correspondence and five-dimensional Ω--deformed SYM on M x S^1.
We investigate the correspondence between two dimensional topological gauge theories and quantum integrable systems discovered by Moore, Nekrasov, Shatashvili. This correspondence means that the hidden quantum integrable structure exists in the topological gauge theories. We showed the correspondence between the G/G gauged WZW model and the phase model in JHEP 11 (2012) 146 (arXiv:1209.3800). In this paper, we study a one-parameter deformation for this correspondence and show that the G/G gauged WZW model coupled to additional matters corresponds to the q-boson model. Furthermore, we investiga…
We show that the matrix elements of integrable models computed by the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz can be put in direct correspondence with the Form Factors of integrable relativistic field theories. This happens when the S-matrix of a Bethe Ansatz model can be regarded as a suitable non-relativistic limit of the S-matrix of a field theory, and when there is a well-defined mapping between the Hilbert spaces and operators of the two theories. This correspondence provides an efficient method to compute matrix elements of Bethe Ansatz integrable models, overpassing the technical difficulties of their d…
We study the large $N$ limit of twisted partition functions on $\mathcal{M}_{g,p}$, the $S^1$ bundle of degree $p$ over a Riemann surface of genus $g$, for 3D $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories arising as low-energy limit of wrapped $N$ M5-branes on hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$. We study contributions from two Bethe vacua which correspond to two canonical irreducible $SL(N, \mathbb{C})$ flat connections on $M$ via 3D-3D correspondence. Using mathematical results on perturbtaive Chern-Simons invariants around the flat connections, we find universal expressions for the large $N$ twisted …
This article reviews a recently-discovered link between integrable quantum field theories and certain ordinary differential equations in the complex domain. Along the way, aspects of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics are discussed, and some elementary features of the six-vertex model and the Bethe ansatz are explained.
We review various aspects of representation theory of affine algebras at the critical level, geometric Langlands correspondence, and Bethe ansatz in the Gaudin models. Geometric Langlands correspondence relates D-modules on the moduli space of G-bundles on a complex curve X and flat G^L-bundles on X. Beilinson and Drinfeld construct it by applying a localization functor to representations of affine algebras of critical level. We show that in genus zero the corresponding D-modules are closely related to the diagonalization problem in the Gaudin model associated to G. This allows us to give a ne…
An announcement of some results of a longer paper where the supersymmetric vacua of two dimensional N=2 susy gauge theories with matter are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the eigenstates of integrable spin chain Hamiltonians. The Heisenberg spin chain is mapped to the two dimensional U(N) theory with fundamental hypermultiplets, the XXZ spin chain is mapped to the analogous three dimensional super-Yang-Mills theory compactified on a circle, the XYZ spin chain and eight-vertex model are related to the four dimensional theory compactified on a torus. The correspondence extends to …
The rational $Q$-system is an efficient method to solve Bethe ansatz equations for quantum integrable spin chains. We construct the rational $Q$-systems for generic Bethe ansatz equations described by an $A_{\ell-1}$ quiver, which include models with multiple momentum carrying nodes, generic inhomogeneities, generic diagonal twists and $q$-deformation. The rational $Q$-system thus constructed is specified by two partitions. Under Bethe/Gauge correspondence, the rational $Q$-system is in a one-to-one correspondence with a 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theory of the type ${T}_{\boldsymbolρ}^{\…
Combining the semiclassical/Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the AGT conjecture and the Bethe/gauge correspondence results in a triple correspondence which identifies classical conformal blocks with twisted superpotentials and then with Yang-Yang functions. In this paper the triple correspondence is studied in the simplest, yet not completely understood case of pure SU(2) super-Yang-Mills gauge theory. A missing element of that correspondence is identified with the classical irregular block. Explicit tests provide a convincing evidence that such a function exists. In particular, it has been shown…
In this introductory review we discuss dynamical tests of the AdS_5 x S^5 string/N=4 super Yang-Mills duality. After a brief introduction to AdS/CFT we argue that semiclassical string energies yield information on the quantum spectrum of the string in the limit of large angular momenta on the S^5. The energies of the folded and circular spinning string solutions rotating on a S^3 within the S^5 are derived, which yield all loop predictions for the dual gauge theory scaling dimensions. These follow from the eigenvalues of the dilatation operator of N=4 super Yang-Mills in a minimal SU(2) subsec…
The correspondence between ordinary differential equations and Bethe ansatz equations for integrable lattice models in their continuum limits is generalised to vertex models related to classical simple Lie algebras. New families of pseudo-differential equations are proposed, and a link between specific generalised eigenvalue problems for these equations and the Bethe ansatz is deduced. The pseudo-differential operators resemble in form the Miura-transformed Lax operators studied in work on generalised KdV equations, classical W-algebras and, more recently, in the context of the geometric Langl…
We study the reflection of magnons from a D5-brane in the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider two possible orientations of the D5-brane with respect to the reference vacuum state, namely vacuum states aligned along "vertical" and "horizontal" directions. We show that the reflections are of the achiral type. We also show that the reflection matrices satisfy the boundary Yang-Baxter equations for both orientations. In the horizontal case the reflection matrix can be interpreted in terms of a bulk S-matrix, S(p, -p), and factorizability of boundary scattering therefore follows fr…
An exactly integrable symplectic correspondence is derived which in a continuum limit leads to the equations of motion of the relativistic generalization of the Calogero-Moser system, that was introduced for the first time by Ruijsenaars and Schneider. For the discrete-time model the equations of motion take the form of Bethe Ansatz equations for the inhomogeneous spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet. We present a Lax pair, the symplectic structure and prove the involutivity of the invariants. Exact solutions are investigated in the rational and hyperbolic (trigonometric) limits of the system that is gi…
We exactly compute the energy density of the integrable O(n) non-linear sigma model as a convergent series. This series is specifically analysed for the very important O(6) symmetry, since it was suggested to result as a peculiar limit of the AdS string theory by Alday and Maldacena [1]. In this respect, the O(6) model gives also refined confirmations and predictions once compared with the SYM Bethe Ansatz [2,3].
We study the Bethe Ansatz formula for the superconformal index, in the case of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills with gauge group $SU(N)$. We observe that not all solutions to the Bethe Ansatz Equations (BAEs) contribute to the index, and thus formulate "reduced BAEs" such that all and only their solutions contribute. We then propose, sharpening a conjecture of Arabi Ardehali et al. [arXiv:1912.04169], that there is a one-to-one correspondence between branches of solutions to the reduced BAEs and vacua of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ theory. We test the proposal in the case of $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)…
We discuss the quasiclassical geometry and integrable systems related to the gauge/string duality. The analysis of quasiclassical solutions to the Bethe anzatz equations arising in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence is performed, compare to stationary phase equations for the matrix integrals. We demonstrate how the underlying geometry is related to the integrable sigma-models of dual string theory, and investigate some details of this correspondence.
We solve the RSOS($p$) models on the light--cone lattice with fixed boundary conditions by disentangling the type II representations of $SU(2)_q$, at $q=e^{iπ/p}$, from the full SOS spectrum obtained through Algebraic Bethe Ansatz. The rule which realizes the quantum group reduction to the RSOS states is that there must not be {\it singular} roots in the solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations describing the states with quantum spin $J<(p-1)/2$. By studying how this rule is active on the particle states, we are able to give a microscopic derivation of the lattice $S-$matrix of the massive kink…
We introduce a series of articles reviewing various aspects of integrable models relevant to the AdS/CFT correspondence. Topics covered in these reviews are: classical integrability, Yangian symmetry, factorized scattering, the Bethe ansatz, the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, and integrable structures in (conformal) quantum field theory. In the present article we highlight how these concepts have found application in AdS/CFT, and provide a brief overview of the material contained in this series.
The theory of classically integrable nonlinear wave equations, and the Bethe Ansatz systems describing massive quantum field theories defined on an infinite cylinder, are related by an important mathematical correspondence that still lacks a satisfactory physical interpretation. In this paper we shall describe this link for the case of the classical and quantum versions of the (Tzitzéica-)Bullough-Dodd model.
We assess the ODE/IM correspondence for the quantum $\mathfrak{g}$-KdV model, for a non-simply laced Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. This is done by studying a meromorphic connection with values in the Langlands dual algebra of the affine Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{g}}^{(1)}$, and constructing the relevant $Ψ$-system among subdominant solutions. We then use the $Ψ$-system to prove that the generalized spectral determinants satisfy the Bethe Ansatz equations of the quantum $\mathfrak{g}$-KdV model. We also consider generalized Airy functions for twisted Kac--Moody algebras and we construct new explici…
We explore the correspondence between the final state in e^+e^- annihilation and the small-x hadronic wavefunction in the transverse plane both in weakly coupled QCD and strongly coupled N=4 SYM. At strong coupling, the virtual and static photon produced in e^+e^- annihilation can be treated as a shock wave propagating in AdS space leaving spherical energy and charge distributions on the boundary. This is shown to be mathematically identical to the computation of energy and charge distributions in the transverse plane generated by a high energy color singlet state. At weak coupling, the corres…
We generalize the exact field theoretic correspondence proposed in arXiv:1103.5726 and embed it into the context of refined topological string. The correspondence originally proposed from the common integrable structures in different field theories can be recast as a special limit of the refined geometric transition relating open and closed topological string partition functions. We realize the simplest examples of the correspondence explicitly in terms of open-closed geometric transition.
We review the derivation of the S-matrix for planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and type IIB superstring theory on an AdS5xS5 background. After deriving the S-matrix for the su(2) and su(3) sectors at the one-loop level based on coordinate Bethe ansatz, we show how su(2|2) symmetry leads to the exact asymptotic S-matrix up to an overall scalar function. We then briefly review the spectrum of bound states by relating these states to simple poles of the S-matrix. Finally, we review the derivation of the asymptotic Bethe equations, which can be used to determine the asymptotic multiparti…
We study new symmetries between A and D type quiver gauge theories with different numbers of colors. We realize these gauge theories with twisted masses via a brane construction that reproduces all the parameters of the Gauge/Bethe correspondence.
We study the ODE/IM correspondence for ODE associated to $\hat{\mathfrak g}$-valued connections, for a simply-laced Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. We prove that subdominant solutions to the ODE defined in different fundamental representations satisfy a set of quadratic equations called $Ψ$-system. This allows us to show that the generalized spectral determinants satisfy the Bethe Ansatz equations.
A special case of the geometric Langlands correspondence is given by the relationship between solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the Gaudin model and opers - connections on the projective line with extra structure. In this paper, we describe a deformation of this correspondence for $SL(N)$. We introduce a difference equation version of opers called $q$-opers and prove a $q$-Langlands correspondence between nondegenerate solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the XXZ model and nondegenerate twisted $q$-opers with regular singularities on the projective line. We show that the quant…
Non-relativistic string theories promise to provide simpler theories of quantum gravity as well as tractable limits of the AdS/CFT correspondence. However, several apparently distinct non-relativistic string theories have been constructed. In particular, one approach is to reduce a relativistic string along a null isometry in target space. Another method is to perform an appropriate large speed of light expansion of a relativistic string. Both of the resulting non-relativistic string theories only have a well-defined spectrum if they have nonzero winding along a longitudinal spatial direction.…
We discuss the possible extensions of Bethe/gauge correspondence to quantum integrable systems based on the super-Lie algebras of A type. Along the way we propose the analogues of Nakajima quiver varieties whose cohomology and K-theory should carry the representations of the corresponding Yangian and the quantum affine algebras, respectively. We end up with comments on the N=4 planar super-Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions.
This note aims to subsume several apparently unrelated models under a common framework. Several examples of well-known quantum field theories are listed which are connected via stochastic quantization. We highlight the fact that the quantization method used to obtain the quantum crystal is a discrete analog of stochastic quantization. This model is of interest for string theory, since the (classical) melting crystal corner is related to the topological A-model. We outline several ideas for interpreting the quantum crystal on the string theory side of the correspondence, exploring interpretatio…
We investigate the integrable structure of spin chain models with centrally extended su(2|2) and psu(2,2|4) symmetry. These chains have their origin in the planar AdS/CFT correspondence, but they also contain the one-dimensional Hubbard model as a special case. We begin with an overview of the representation theory of centrally extended su(2|2). These results are applied in the construction and investigation of an interesting S-matrix with su(2|2) symmetry. In particular, they enable a remarkably simple proof of the Yang-Baxter relation. We also show the equivalence of the S-matrix to Shastry'…
We discuss the correspondence between models solved by Bethe ansatz and classical integrable systems of Calogero type. We illustrate the correspondence by the simplest example of the inhomogeneous asymmetric 6-vertex model parametrized by trigonometric (hyperbolic) functions.
We construct new integrable systems describing particles with internal spin from four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ quiver gauge theories. The models can be quantized and solved exactly using the quantum inverse scattering method and also using the Bethe/Gauge correspondence.
We introduce a new concept of quasi-Yang-Baxter algebras. The quantum quasi-Yang-Baxter algebras being simple but non-trivial deformations of ordinary algebras of monodromy matrices realize a new type of quantum dynamical symmetries and find an unexpected and remarkable applications in quantum inverse scattering method (QISM). We show that applying to quasi-Yang-Baxter algebras the standard procedure of QISM one obtains new wide classes of quantum models which, being integrable (i.e. having enough number of commuting integrals of motion) are only quasi-exactly solvable (i.e. admit an algebraic…
We study Bethe/gauge correspondence at the special locus of Coulomb moduli where the integrable system exhibits the splitting of degenerate levels. For this investigation, we consider the four-dimensional pure $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $U(N)$ gauge theory, with a half-BPS surface defect constructed with the help of an orbifold or a degenerate gauge vertex. We show that the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations imply the Schrödinger-type and the Baxter-type differential equations satisfied by the respective surface defect partition functions. At the special locus of Coulomb moduli the…
We exploit the recently proposed correspondence between gravitational perturbations and quantum Seiberg-Witten curves to compute the spectrum of quasi-normal modes of asymptotically flat Kerr Newman black holes and establish detailed gauge/gravity dictionaries for a large class of black holes, D-branes and fuzzballs in diverse dimensions. QNM frequencies obtained from the quantum periods of $SU(2)$ ${\cal N}=2$ SYM with $N_f=3$ flavours are compared against numerical results, WKB (eikonal) approximation and geodetic motion showing remarkable agreement. Starting from the master example relating…
