We exploit the recently proposed correspondence between gravitational perturbations and quantum Seiberg-Witten curves to compute the spectrum of quasi-normal modes of asymptotically flat Kerr Newman black holes and establish detailed gauge/gravity dictionaries for a large class of black holes, D-branes and fuzzballs in diverse dimensions. QNM frequencies obtained from the quantum periods of $SU(2)$ ${\cal N}=2$ SYM with $N_f=3$ flavours are compared against numerical results, WKB (eikonal) approximation and geodetic motion showing remarkable agreement. Starting from the master example relating quasi-normal modes of Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4$ to $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $N_f=4$, we illustrate the procedure for some simple toy-models that allow analytic solutions. We also argue that the AGT version of the gauge/gravity correspondence may give precious hints as to the physical/geometric origin of the quasi-normal modes/Seiberg-Witten connection and further elucidate interesting properties (such as tidal Love numbers and grey-body factors) that can help discriminating black holes from fuzzballs.

It is well-known that there is a geometric correspondence between high-frequency quasi-normal modes (QNMs) and null geodesics (spherical photon orbits). In this paper, we generalize such correspondence to charged scalar field in Kerr-Newman space-time. In our case, the particle and black hole are all charged, so one should consider non-geodesic orbits. Using the WKB approximation, we find that the real part of quasi-normal frequency corresponds to the orbits frequency, the imaginary part of the frequency corresponds to the Lyapunov exponent of these orbits and the eigenvalue of angular equatio…
We study the electromagnetic (EM) duality from $6$ derivative theory with homogeneous disorder. We find that with the change of the sign of the coupling parameter $γ_1$ of the $6$ derivative theory, the particle-vortex duality with homogeneous disorder holds more well than that without homogeneous disorder. The properties of quasinormal modes (QNMs) of this system are also explored. Similarly, for large $γ_1$, with the change of the sign of $γ_1$, the correspondence between the low frequency poles of the original theory and the ones of its dual theory, which is strongly violated in the absence…
The rapid advancement of gravitational wave astronomy in recent years has paved the way for the burgeoning development of black hole spectroscopy, which enhances the possibility of testing black holes by their quasinormal modes (QNMs). In this paper, the axial gravitational perturbations and the QNM frequencies of black holes in the hybrid metric-Palatini gravity (HMPG) are investigated. The HMPG theory is characterized by a dynamical scalar degree of freedom and is able to explain the late-time accelerating expansion of the universe without introducing any \textit{ad hoc} screening mechanism …
We investigate the possibility of using quasi-normal modes (QNMs) to probe the microscopic structure of two-dimensional (2D) anti-de Sitter (AdS$_2$) dilatonic black holes. We first extend previous results on the QNMs spectrum, found for external massless scalar perturbations, to the case of massive scalar perturbations. We find that the quasi-normal frequencies are purely imaginary and scale linearly with the overtone number. Motivated by this and extending previous results regarding Schwarzschild black holes, we propose a microscopic description of the 2D black hole in terms of a coherent st…
The frequency spectra of the gravito-electromagnetic perturbations of the Kerr-Newman (KN) black hole with the slowest decay rate have been computed recently. It has been found that KN has two families $-$ the photon sphere and the near-horizon families $-$ of quasinormal modes (QNMs), which display the interesting phenomenon of eigenvalue repulsion. The perturbation equations, in spite of being a coupled system of two PDEs, are amenable to an analytic solution using the method of separation of variables in a near-horizon expansion around the extremal KN black hole. This leads to an analytical…
Quasi-normal mode (QNM) modeling is an invaluable tool for characterizing remnant black holes, studying strong gravity, and testing GR. Only recently have QNM studies begun to focus on multimode fitting to numerical relativity (NR) strain waveforms. As GW observatories become even more sensitive they will be able to resolve higher-order modes. Consequently, multimode QNM fits will be critically important, and in turn require a more thorough treatment of the asymptotic frame at $\mathscr{I}^+$. The first main result of this work is a method for systematically fitting a QNM model containing many…
We study scattering of short Gaussian pulses of axial gravitational waves by a black hole that has swallowed one or more global monopoles. We show how the response of the black hole to the impinging pulses depends both on the number of monopoles the black hole has swallowed and on the symmetry breaking scale of the model which gave rise to the monopoles. We determine the corresponding quasinormal modes that get excited by the impinging pulses and that get imprinted in the black hole's response to the pulses. Such modes are also expected to show up in various other dynamical processes such as t…
We compute scalar quasinormal mode (QNM) frequencies in rotating black hole solutions of the most general class of higher-derivative gravity theories, to quartic order in the curvature, that reduce to General Relativity for weak fields and are compatible with its symmetries. The wave operator governing the QNMs is not separable, but we show one can extract the QNM frequencies by a projection onto the set of spheroidal harmonics. We have obtained accurate results for the quasinormal frequency corrections relative to Kerr for rotating black holes with dimensionless spins up to $\sim 0.7$. We als…

We study the scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of planar AdS$_4$ black holes with NUT charge. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, these solutions describe a thermal quantum field theory embedded in a Gödel-type universe with closed time-like curves. For a given temperature and NUT charge, two different planar Taub-NUT solutions exist, but we show that only the one with a positive specific heat contributes to the Euclidean saddle point in the path integral. By using the Newman-Penrose formalism, we then derive the master equations satisfied by scalar, electromagn…
In the analysis of a binary black hole coalescence, it is necessary to include gravitational self-interactions in order to describe the transition of the gravitational wave signal from the merger to the ringdown stage. In this paper we study the phenomenology of the generation and propagation of nonlinearities in the ringdown of a Schwarzschild black hole, using second-order perturbation theory. Following earlier work, we show that the Green's function and its causal structure determines how both first-order and second-order perturbations are generated, and hence highlight that both of these s…

We compute quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the metric and gauge field perturbations about black branes electrically and magnetically charged in the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. By the gauge/gravity correspondence, this theory is dual to a particular class of field theories with a chiral anomaly, in a thermal charged plasma state subjected to a constant external magnetic field, $B$. The QNMs are dual to the poles of the two-point functions of the energy-momentum and axial current operators, and they encode information about the dissipation and transport of charges in the plasma. Complement…
We study gravitational perturbations of electrically charged black holes in (3+1)-dimensional Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity with a positive cosmological constant. For the axial perturbations, we obtain a set of decoupled Schrodinger-type equations, whose formal expressions, in terms of metric functions, are the same as those without cosmological constant, corresponding to the Regge-Wheeler equation in the proper limit. We compute the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of the decoupled perturbations using the Schutz-Iyer-Will's WKB method. We discuss the stability of the charged black holes by investigat…
After recent observational events like the LIGO-Virgo detections of gravitational waves and the shadow image of M87* supermassive black hole by Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), the theoretical study of black holes was significantly improved. Quantities as quasinormal frequencies, shadows, and light deflection become more important to analyze black hole models. In this context, an interesting scenario to study is a black hole in the bumblebee gravity. The bumblebee vector field imposes a spontaneous symmetry breaking that allows the field to acquire a vacuum expectation value that generates Loren…
We study the charge response in complex frequency plane and the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of the boundary quantum field theory with momentum dissipation dual to a probe generalized Maxwell system with Weyl correction. When the strength of the momentum dissipation $\hatα$ is small, the pole structure of the conductivity is similar to the case without the momentum dissipation. The qualitative correspondence between the poles of the real part of the conductivity of the original theory and the ones of its electromagnetic (EM) dual theory approximately holds when $γ\rightarrow -γ$ with $γ$ being th…
The gravitational consequence of local Lorentz violation (LV) should show itself in derivation of the characteristic quasinormal ringing of black hole mergers from their general relativity case. In this paper, we study quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the scalar and electromagnetic field perturbations to Einstein aether black holes. We find that quasinormal ringing of the first kind aether black hole is similar to that of another Lorentz violation model---the QED-extension limit of standard model extension. These similarities between completely different backgrounds may imply that LV in gravity sec…
