Heterogeneous anisotropic diffusion problems arise in the various areas of science and engineering including plasma physics, petroleum engineering, and image processing. Standard numerical methods can produce spurious oscillations when they are used to solve those problems. A common approach to avoid this difficulty is to design a proper numerical scheme and/or a proper mesh so that the numerical solution validates the discrete counterpart (DMP) of the maximum principle satisfied by the continuous solution. A well known mesh condition for the DMP satisfaction by the linear finite element solution of isotropic diffusion problems is the non-obtuse angle condition that requires the dihedral angles of mesh elements to be non-obtuse. In this paper, a generalization of the condition, the so-called anisotropic non-obtuse angle condition, is developed for the finite element solution of heterogeneous anisotropic diffusion problems. The new condition is essentially the same as the existing one except that the dihedral angles are now measured in a metric depending on the diffusion matrix of the underlying problem. Several variants of the new condition are obtained. Based on one of them, two metric tensors for use in anisotropic mesh generation are developed to account for DMP satisfaction and the combination of DMP satisfaction and mesh adaptivity. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the features of the linear finite element method for anisotropic meshes generated with the metric tensors.
Anisotropic mesh quality measures and anisotropic mesh adaptation are studied for polygonal meshes. Three sets of alignment and equidistribution measures are developed, one based on least squares fitting, one based on generalized barycentric mapping, and the other based on singular value decomposition of edge matrices. Numerical tests show that all three sets of mesh quality measures provide good measurements for the quality of polygonal meshes under given metrics. Based on one of these sets of quality measures and using a moving mesh partial differential equation, an anisotropic adaptive poly…
This paper analyzes the Scott-Vogelius divergence-free element pair on anisotropic meshes. Weexplore the behavior of the inf-sup stability constant with respect to the aspect ratio on meshes generated with astandard barycenter mesh refinement strategy, as well as a newly introduced incenter refinement strategy. Numericalexperiments are presented which support the theoretical results
A simple and efficient interface-fitted mesh generation algorithm is developed in this paper. This algorithm can produce a local anisotropic fitting mixed mesh which consists of both triangles and quadrilaterals near the interface. A new finite element method is proposed for second order elliptic interface problems based on the resulting mesh. Optimal approximation capabilities on anisotropic elements are proved in both the $H^1$ and $L^2$ norms. The discrete system is usually ill-conditioned due to anisotropic and small elements near the interface. Thereupon, a multigrid method is presented t…

Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are extensions of the usual Galerkin finite element methods. Although there are vast amount of studies on DG methods, most of them have assumed shape-regularity conditions on meshes for both theoretical error analysis and practical computations. In this paper, we present a new symmetric interior penalty DG scheme with a modified penalty term. We show that, without imposing the shape-regularity condition on the meshes, the new DG scheme inherits all of the good properties of standard DG methods, and is thus robust on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments …
We investigate the piecewise linear nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviar and the lowest order Raviart-Thomas finite-element methods for the Poisson problem on three-dimensional anisotropic meshes. We first give error estimates of the Crouzeix-Raviart and the Raviart-Thomas finite-element approximate problems. We next present the equivalence between the Raviart-Thomas finite-element method and the enriched Crouzeix-Raviart finite-element method. We emphasise that we do not impose either shape-regular or maximum-angle condition during mesh partitioning. Numerical results confirm the results that we obt…
In the recent article [Kopteva, N., Numer. Math., 137, 607--642 (2017)] the author obtained residual-type a posteriori error estimates in the energy norm for singularly perturbed semilinear reaction-diffusion equations on anisotropic triangulations. The error constants in these estimates are independent of the diameters and the aspect ratios of mesh elements and of the small perturbation parameter. The purpose of this note is to improve the weights in the jump residual part of the estimator. This is attained by using a novel sharper version of the scaled trace theorem for anisotropic elements,…
Discrete maximum principle and a Delaunay-type mesh condition for linear finite element approximations of two-dimensional anisotropic diffusion problems
A new anisotropic mesh adaptation strategy for finite element solution of elliptic differential equations is presented. It generates anisotropic adaptive meshes as quasi-uniform ones in some metric space, with the metric tensor being computed based on hierarchical a posteriori error estimates. A global hierarchical error estimate is employed in this study to obtain reliable directional information of the solution. Instead of solving the global error problem exactly, which is costly in general, we solve it iteratively using the symmetric Gauss--Seidel (GS) method. Numerical results show that a …

We consider spectral mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations of the Lamé system of linear elasticity in polyhedral domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In order to resolve possible corner, edge, and corner-edge singularities, anisotropic geometric edge meshes consisting of hexahedral elements are applied. We perform a computational study on the discrete inf-sup stability of these methods, and especially focus on the robustness with respect to the Poisson ratio close to the incompressible limit (i.e. the Stokes system). Furthermore, under certain realistic assumptions (for analytic da…

Lattice Boltzmann Methods (LBM) stand out for their simplicity and computational efficiency while offering the possibility of simulating complex phenomena. While they are optimal for Cartesian meshes, adapted meshes have traditionally been a stumbling block since it is difficult to predict the right physics through various levels of meshes. In this work, we design a class of fully adaptive LBM methods with dynamic mesh adaptation and error control relying on multiresolution analysis. This wavelet-based approach allows to adapt the mesh based on the regularity of the solution and leads to a ver…
Most classical finite element schemes for the (Navier-)Stokes equations are neither pressure-robust, nor are they inf-sup stable on general anisotropic triangulations. A lack of pressure-robustness may lead to large velocity errors, whenever the Stokes momentum balance is dominated by a strong and complicated pressure gradient. It is a consequence of a method, which does not exactly satisfy the divergence constraint. However, inf-sup stable schemes can often be made pressure-robust just by a recent, modified discretization of the exterior forcing term, using $\mathbf{H}(\operatorname{div})$-co…

A finite element-based image segmentation strategy enhanced by an anisotropic mesh adaptation procedure is presented. The methodology relies on a split Bregman algorithm for the minimisation of a region-based energy functional and on an anisotropic recovery-based error estimate to drive mesh adaptation. More precisely, a Bayesian energy functional is considered to account for image spatial information, ensuring that the methodology is able to identify inhomogeneous spatial patterns in complex images. In addition, the anisotropic mesh adaptation guarantees a sharp detection of the interface bet…
In this paper we present a novel geometric filter, a homogeneous moving least squares fitting-based filter (H-MLS filter), for anisotropic mesh filtering. Instead of fitting the noisy data by a moving parametric surface and projecting the noisy data onto the surface, we compute new positions of mesh vertices as the solutions to homogeneous least squares fitting of moving constants to local neighboring vertices and tangent planes that pass through the vertices. The normals for defining the tangent planes need not be filtered beforehand but the parameters for balancing the influences between nei…
