We study the stability of explicit one-step integration schemes for the linear finite element approximation of linear parabolic equations. The derived bound on the largest permissible time step is tight for any mesh and any diffusion matrix within a factor of $2(d+1)$, where $d$ is the spatial dimension. Both full mass matrix and mass lumping are considered. The bound reveals that the stability condition is affected by two factors. The first one depends on the number of mesh elements and corresponds to the classic bound for the Laplace operator on a uniform mesh. The other factor reflects the effects of the interplay of the mesh geometry and the diffusion matrix. It is shown that it is not the mesh geometry itself but the mesh geometry in relation to the diffusion matrix that is crucial to the stability of explicit methods. When the mesh is uniform in the metric specified by the inverse of the diffusion matrix, the stability condition is comparable to the situation with the Laplace operator on a uniform mesh. Numerical results are presented to verify the theoretical findings.
This paper analyzes the Scott-Vogelius divergence-free element pair on anisotropic meshes. Weexplore the behavior of the inf-sup stability constant with respect to the aspect ratio on meshes generated with astandard barycenter mesh refinement strategy, as well as a newly introduced incenter refinement strategy. Numericalexperiments are presented which support the theoretical results
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are extensions of the usual Galerkin finite element methods. Although there are vast amount of studies on DG methods, most of them have assumed shape-regularity conditions on meshes for both theoretical error analysis and practical computations. In this paper, we present a new symmetric interior penalty DG scheme with a modified penalty term. We show that, without imposing the shape-regularity condition on the meshes, the new DG scheme inherits all of the good properties of standard DG methods, and is thus robust on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments …
Anisotropic mesh quality measures and anisotropic mesh adaptation are studied for polygonal meshes. Three sets of alignment and equidistribution measures are developed, one based on least squares fitting, one based on generalized barycentric mapping, and the other based on singular value decomposition of edge matrices. Numerical tests show that all three sets of mesh quality measures provide good measurements for the quality of polygonal meshes under given metrics. Based on one of these sets of quality measures and using a moving mesh partial differential equation, an anisotropic adaptive poly…
Lower a posteriori error bounds obtained using the standard bubble function approach are reviewed in the context of anisotropic meshes. A numerical example is given that clearly demonstrates that the short-edge jump residual terms in such bounds are not sharp. Hence, for linear finite element approximations of the Laplace equation in polygonal domains, a new approach is employed to obtain essentially sharper lower a posteriori error bounds and thus to show that the upper error estimator in the recent paper [N. Kopteva, Numer. Math., 137 (2017), 607-642] is efficient on certain anisotropic mesh…
We investigate the piecewise linear nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviar and the lowest order Raviart-Thomas finite-element methods for the Poisson problem on three-dimensional anisotropic meshes. We first give error estimates of the Crouzeix-Raviart and the Raviart-Thomas finite-element approximate problems. We next present the equivalence between the Raviart-Thomas finite-element method and the enriched Crouzeix-Raviart finite-element method. We emphasise that we do not impose either shape-regular or maximum-angle condition during mesh partitioning. Numerical results confirm the results that we obt…

Pressure-robustness has been widely studied since the conception of the notion and the introduction of the reconstruction approach for classical mixed methods in [5]. Using discretizations capable of yielding velocity solutions that are independent of the pressure approximation has been recognized as essential, and a large number of recent articles attest to this fact, e.g., [1,6]. Apart from the pressure-robustness aspect, incompressible flows exhibit anisotropic phenomena in the solutions which can be dealt with by using anisotropic mesh grading. The recent publications [3,4] deal with the c…
We consider spectral mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations of the Lamé system of linear elasticity in polyhedral domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In order to resolve possible corner, edge, and corner-edge singularities, anisotropic geometric edge meshes consisting of hexahedral elements are applied. We perform a computational study on the discrete inf-sup stability of these methods, and especially focus on the robustness with respect to the Poisson ratio close to the incompressible limit (i.e. the Stokes system). Furthermore, under certain realistic assumptions (for analytic da…
In the recent article [Kopteva, N., Numer. Math., 137, 607--642 (2017)] the author obtained residual-type a posteriori error estimates in the energy norm for singularly perturbed semilinear reaction-diffusion equations on anisotropic triangulations. The error constants in these estimates are independent of the diameters and the aspect ratios of mesh elements and of the small perturbation parameter. The purpose of this note is to improve the weights in the jump residual part of the estimator. This is attained by using a novel sharper version of the scaled trace theorem for anisotropic elements,…
A simple and efficient interface-fitted mesh generation algorithm is developed in this paper. This algorithm can produce a local anisotropic fitting mixed mesh which consists of both triangles and quadrilaterals near the interface. A new finite element method is proposed for second order elliptic interface problems based on the resulting mesh. Optimal approximation capabilities on anisotropic elements are proved in both the $H^1$ and $L^2$ norms. The discrete system is usually ill-conditioned due to anisotropic and small elements near the interface. Thereupon, a multigrid method is presented t…

Most classical finite element schemes for the (Navier-)Stokes equations are neither pressure-robust, nor are they inf-sup stable on general anisotropic triangulations. A lack of pressure-robustness may lead to large velocity errors, whenever the Stokes momentum balance is dominated by a strong and complicated pressure gradient. It is a consequence of a method, which does not exactly satisfy the divergence constraint. However, inf-sup stable schemes can often be made pressure-robust just by a recent, modified discretization of the exterior forcing term, using $\mathbf{H}(\operatorname{div})$-co…
We present precise Raviart-Thomas interpolation error estimates on anisotropic meshes. The novel aspect of our theory is the introduction of a new geometric parameter of simplices. It is possible to obtain new anisotropic Raviart-Thoma error estimates using the parameter. We also include corrections to an error in "General theory of interpolation error estimates on anisotropic meshes" (Japan Journal of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 38 (2021) 163-191), in which Theorem 3 was incorrect.
We present precise anisotropic interpolation error estimates for smooth functions using a new geometric parameter and derive inverse inequalities on anisotropic meshes. In our theory, the interpolation error is bounded in terms of the diameter of a simplex and the geometric parameter. Imposing additional assumptions makes it possible to obtain anisotropic error estimates. This paper also includes corrections to an error in Theorem 2 of our previous paper, "General theory of interpolation error estimates on anisotropic meshes" (Japan Journal of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 38 (2021) 163-…
Algebraically stabilized finite element discretizations of scalar steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction equations often provide accurate approximate solutions satisfying the discrete maximum principle (DMP). However, it was observed that a deterioration of the accuracy and convergence rates may occur for some problems if meshes without local symmetries are used. The paper investigates these phenomena both numerically and analytically and the findings are used to design a new algebraic stabilization called Symmetrized Monotone Upwind-type Algebraically Stabilized (SMUAS) method. It is prov…
We propose a general theory of estimating interpolation error for smooth functions in two and three dimensions. In our theory, the error of interpolation is bound in terms of the diameter of a simplex and a geometric parameter. In the two-dimensional case, our geometric parameter is equivalent to the circumradius of a triangle. In the three-dimensional case, our geometric parameter also represents the flatness of a tetrahedron. Through the introduction of the geometric parameter, the error estimates newly obtained can be applied to cases that violate the maximum-angle condition.
In this article, using the weighted discrete least-squares, we propose a patch reconstruction finite element space with only one degree of freedom per element. As the approximation space, it is applied to the discontinuous Galerkin methods with the upwind scheme for the steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction problems over polytopic meshes. The optimal error estimates are provided in both diffusion-dominated and convection-dominated regimes. Furthermore, several numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical error estimates, and to well approximate boundary layers and/or inte…
We analyse the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for two-dimensional singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems. A class of layer-adapted meshes, including Shishkin- and Bakhvalov-type meshes, is discussed within a general framework. Local projections and their approximation properties on anisotropic meshes are used to derive error estimates for energy and "balanced" norms. Here, the energy norm is naturally derived from the bilinear form of LDG formulation and the "balanced" norm is artifically introduced to capture the boundary layer contribution. We establish a uniform converg…
In this paper we analyze the error as well for the semi-discretization as the full discretization of a time-dependent convection-diffusion problem. We use for the discretization in space the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method on a class of layer-adapted meshes including Shishkin-type and Bakhvalov-type meshes and the implicit $θ$-scheme in time. For piecewise tensor-product polynomials of degree $k$ we obtain uniform or almost uniform error estimates with respect to space of order $k+1/2$ in some energy norm and optimal error estimates with respect to time. Our analysis is based on care…
In convergence analysis of finite element methods for singularly perturbed reaction--diffusion problems, balanced norms have been successfully introduced to replace standard energy norms so that layers can be captured. In this article, we focus on the convergence analysis in a balanced norm on Bakhvalov-type rectangular meshes. In order to achieve our goal, a novel interpolation operator, which consists of a local weighted $L^2$ projection operator and the Lagrange interpolation operator, is introduced for a convergence analysis of optimal order in the balanced norm. The analysis also depends …
A time-stepping L1 scheme for subdiffusion equation with a Riemann--Liouville time-fractional derivative is developed and analyzed. This is the first paper to show that the L1 scheme for the model problem under consideration is second-order accurate (sharp error estimate) over nonuniform time-steps. The established convergence analysis is novel, innovative and concise. For completeness, the L1 scheme is combined with the standard Galerkin finite elements for the spatial discretization, which will then define a fully-discrete numerical scheme. The error analysis for this scheme is also investig…
We consider an inverse source two-parameter sub-diffusion model subject to a nonlocal initial condition. The problem models several physical processes, among them are the microwave heating and light propagation in photoelectric cells. A bi-orthogonal pair of bases is employed to construct a series representation of the solution and a Volterra integral equation for the source term. We develop a numerical algorithm for approximating the unknown time-dependent source term. Due to the singularity of the solution near $t=0$, a graded mesh is used to improve the convergence rate. Numerical experimen…

In this work is provided a numerical study of a diffusion problem involving a second order term on the domain boundary (the Laplace-Beltrami operator) referred to as the \textit{Ventcel problem}.A variational formulation of the Ventcel problem is studied, leading to a finite element discretization. The focus is on the resort to high order curved meshes for the discretization of the physical domain. The computational errors are investigated both in terms of geometrical error and of finite element approximation error, respectively associated to the mesh degree $r\ge 1$ and to the finite element de…
