We consider spectral mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations of the Lamé system of linear elasticity in polyhedral domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In order to resolve possible corner, edge, and corner-edge singularities, anisotropic geometric edge meshes consisting of hexahedral elements are applied. We perform a computational study on the discrete inf-sup stability of these methods, and especially focus on the robustness with respect to the Poisson ratio close to the incompressible limit (i.e. the Stokes system). Furthermore, under certain realistic assumptions (for analytic data) on the regularity of the exact solution, we illustrate numerically that the proposed mixed DG schemes converge exponentially in a natural DG norm.
Existing a priori convergence results of the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method to solve the problem of linear elasticity are improved. Using duality arguments, we show that higher convergence rates for the displacement can be obtained. Post-processing techniques are introduced in order to prove superconvergence and numerical experiments {\color{black} confirm} our theory.
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are extensions of the usual Galerkin finite element methods. Although there are vast amount of studies on DG methods, most of them have assumed shape-regularity conditions on meshes for both theoretical error analysis and practical computations. In this paper, we present a new symmetric interior penalty DG scheme with a modified penalty term. We show that, without imposing the shape-regularity condition on the meshes, the new DG scheme inherits all of the good properties of standard DG methods, and is thus robust on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments …
This article introduces a weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method for linear elasticity interface problems on general polygonal/ployhedra partitions. The developed WG method has been proved to be stable and accurate with optimal order error estimates in the discrete $H^1$ norm. Some numerical experiments are conducted to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed WG method.
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.
In this paper, a residual-type a posteriori error estimator is proposed and analyzed for a modified weak Galerkin finite element method solving linear elasticity problems. The estimator is proven to be both reliable and efficient because it provides upper and lower bounds on the actual error in a discrete energy norm. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the this error estimator.
In this paper we present an immersed weak Galerkin method for solving second-order elliptic interface problems on polygonal meshes, where the meshes do not need to be aligned with the interface. The discrete space consists of constants on each edge and broken linear polynomials satisfying the interface conditions in each element. For triangular meshes, such broken linear plynomials coincide with the basis functions in immersed finite element methods [26]. We establish some approximation properties of the broken linear polynomials and the discrete weak gradient of a certain projection of the so…
A stabilizing/penalty term is often used in finite element methods with discontinuous approximations to enforce connection of discontinuous functions across element boundaries. Removing stabilizers from discontinuous finite element methods will simplify the formulations and reduce programming complexity significantly. The goal of this paper is to introduce a stabilizer free weak Galerkin finite element method for second order elliptic equations on polytopal meshes in 2D or 3D. This new WG method keeps a simple symmetric positive definite form and can work on polygonal/polyheral meshes. Optimal…
In this article, using the weighted discrete least-squares, we propose a patch reconstruction finite element space with only one degree of freedom per element. As the approximation space, it is applied to the discontinuous Galerkin methods with the upwind scheme for the steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction problems over polytopic meshes. The optimal error estimates are provided in both diffusion-dominated and convection-dominated regimes. Furthermore, several numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical error estimates, and to well approximate boundary layers and/or inte…
We analyse the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for two-dimensional singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems. A class of layer-adapted meshes, including Shishkin- and Bakhvalov-type meshes, is discussed within a general framework. Local projections and their approximation properties on anisotropic meshes are used to derive error estimates for energy and "balanced" norms. Here, the energy norm is naturally derived from the bilinear form of LDG formulation and the "balanced" norm is artifically introduced to capture the boundary layer contribution. We establish a uniform converg…
In this paper, we generalize the compact subcell weighted essentially non oscillatory (CSWENO) limiting strategy for Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method developed recently by us in 2021 for structured meshes to unstructured triangular meshes. The main idea of the limiting strategy is to divide the immediate neighbors of a given cell into the required stencil and to use a WENO reconstruction for limiting. This strategy can be applied for any type of WENO reconstruction. We have used the WENO reconstruction proposed by Zhu and Shu in 2019 and provided accuracy tests and results for two-dim…
This paper presents a new and unified approach to the derivation and analysis of many existing, as well as new discontinuous Galerkin methods for linear elasticity problems. The analysis is based on a unified discrete formulation for the linear elasticity problem consisting of four discretization variables: strong symmetric stress tensor $\dsig$ and displacement $\du$ inside each element, and the modifications of these two variables $\hsig$ and $\hu$ on elementary boundaries of elements. Motivated by many relevant methods in the literature, this formulation can be used to derive most existing …
We use the augmented Lagrangian formalism to derive discontinuous Galerkin formulations for problems in nonlinear elasticity. In elasticity stress is typically a symmetric function of strain, leading to symmetric tangent stiffness matrices in Newtons method when conforming finite elements are used for discretization. By use of the augmented Lagrangian framework, we can also obtain symmetric tangent stiffness matrices in discontinuous Galerkin methods. We suggest two different approaches and give examples from plasticity and from large deformation hyperelasticity.
This paper presents high order accurate discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for wave problems on moving curved meshes with general choices of basis and quadrature. The proposed method adopts an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation to map the acoustic wave equation from the time-dependent moving physical domain onto a fixed reference domain. For moving curved meshes, weighted mass matrices must be assembled and inverted at each time step when using explicit time stepping methods. We avoid this step by utilizing an easily invertible weight-adjusted approximation. The resulting semi-di…

A new discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Stokes equations is developed in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. This method employs discontinuous polynomials for both velocity and pressure on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. Most finite element methods with discontinuous approximation have one or more stabilizing terms for velocity and for pressure to guarantee stability and convergence. This new finite element method has the standard conforming finite element formulation, without any velocity or pressure stabilizers. Optimal-order error estimates are established for…
In this paper we analyze the error as well for the semi-discretization as the full discretization of a time-dependent convection-diffusion problem. We use for the discretization in space the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method on a class of layer-adapted meshes including Shishkin-type and Bakhvalov-type meshes and the implicit $θ$-scheme in time. For piecewise tensor-product polynomials of degree $k$ we obtain uniform or almost uniform error estimates with respect to space of order $k+1/2$ in some energy norm and optimal error estimates with respect to time. Our analysis is based on care…
A new stabilizer free weak Galerkin (WG) method is introduced and analyzed for the biharmonic equation. Stabilizing/penalty terms are often necessary in the finite element formulations with discontinuous approximations to ensure the stability of the methods. Removal of stabilizers will simplify finite element formulations and reduce programming complexity. This stabilizer free WG method has an ultra simple formulation and can work on general partitions with polygons/polyhedra. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$ for $k\ge 2$ and in $L^2$ norm for $k>2$ are established for the cor…
Discontinuous Galerkin (dG) methods on meshes consisting of polygonal/polyhedral (henceforth, collectively termed as \emph{polytopic}) elements have received considerable attention in recent years. Due to the physical frame basis functions used typically and the quadrature challenges involved, the matrix-assembly step for these methods is often computationally cumbersome. To address this important practical issue, this work proposes two parallel assembly implementation algorithms on CUDA-enabled graphics cards for the interior penalty dG method on polytopic meshes for various classes of linear…
This work analyzes a high order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the linear elasticity problem in a domain not necessarily polyhedral. The domain is approximated by a polyhedral computational domain where the HDG solution can be computed. The introduction of the rotation as one of the unknowns allows us to use the gradient of the displacements to obtain an explicit representation of the boundary data in the computational domain. The boundary data is transferred from the true boundary to the computational boundary by line integrals, where the integrand depends on the Cauchy …
A mixed finite element method for nearly incompressible elasticity and Stokes equations using primal and dual meshes with quadrilateral and hexahedral grids
This paper constructs two conforming finite element grad grad and elasticity complexes on the cuboid meshes. For the finite element grad grad complex, an $H^2$ conforming finite element space, an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{curl}; \mathbb{S})$ conforming finite element space, an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{div}; \mathbb{T})$ conforming finite element space and an $\boldsymbol{L}^2$ finite element space are constructed. Further, a finite element complex with reduced regularity is also constructed, whose degrees of freedom for the three diagonal components are coupled. For the finite element…

This article considers the extension of two-grid $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for the numerical approximation of second-order quasilinear elliptic boundary value problems of monotone type to the case when agglomerated polygonal/polyhedral meshes are employed for the coarse mesh approximation. We recall that within the two-grid setting, while it is necessary to solve a nonlinear problem on the coarse approximation space, only a linear problem must be computed on the original fine finite element space. In this article, the coarse space will be constructed by agglome…
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for nonlinear conservation laws reproduce a discrete entropy inequality by combining entropy conservative finite volume fluxes with summation-by-parts (SBP) discretization matrices. In the DG context, on tensor product (quadrilateral and hexahedral) elements, SBP matrices are typically constructed by collocating at Lobatto quadrature points. Recent work has extended the construction of entropy-stable DG schemes to collocation at more accurate Gauss quadrature points. In this work, we extend entropy-stable Gauss collocation schemes t…
