A new discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Stokes equations is developed in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. This method employs discontinuous polynomials for both velocity and pressure on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. Most finite element methods with discontinuous approximation have one or more stabilizing terms for velocity and for pressure to guarantee stability and convergence. This new finite element method has the standard conforming finite element formulation, without any velocity or pressure stabilizers. Optimal-order error estimates are established for the corresponding numerical approximation in various norms. The numerical examples are tested for low and high order elements up to the degree four in 2D and 3D spaces.
In this work we present a generic framework for non-conforming finite elements on polytopal meshes, characterised by elements that can be generic polygons/polyhedra. We first present the functional framework on the example of a linear elliptic problem representing a single-phase flow in porous medium. This framework gathers a wide variety of possible non-conforming methods, and an error estimate is provided for this simple model. We then turn to the application of the functional framework to the case of a steady degenerate elliptic equation, for which a mass-lumping technique is required; here…
A conforming discontinuous Galerkin finite element method is introduced for solving the biharmonic equation. This method, by its name, uses discontinuous approximations and keeps simple formulation of the conforming finite element method at the same time. The ultra simple formulation of the method will reduce programming complexity in practice. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$ norm is established for the corresponding finite element solutions. Error estimates in the $L^2$ norm are also derived with a sub-optimal order of convergence for the lowest order element and an optimal …
We design a Hybrid High-Order (HHO) scheme for the Poisson problem that is fully robust on polytopal meshes in the presence of small edges/faces. We state general assumptions on the stabilisation terms involved in the scheme, under which optimal error estimates (in discrete and continuous energy norms, as well as $L^2$-norm) are established with multiplicative constants that do not depend on the maximum number of faces in each element, or the relative size between an element and its faces. We illustrate the error estimates through numerical simulations in 2D and 3D on meshes designed by agglom…
A stabilizing/penalty term is often used in finite element methods with discontinuous approximations to enforce connection of discontinuous functions across element boundaries. Removing stabilizers from discontinuous finite element methods will simplify the formulations and reduce programming complexity significantly. The goal of this paper is to introduce a stabilizer free weak Galerkin finite element method for second order elliptic equations on polytopal meshes in 2D or 3D. This new WG method keeps a simple symmetric positive definite form and can work on polygonal/polyheral meshes. Optimal…
We investigate artificial compressibility (AC) techniques for the time discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The space discretization is based on a lowest-order face-based scheme supporting polytopal meshes, namely discrete velocities are attached to the mesh faces and cells, whereas discrete pressures are attached to the mesh cells. This face-based scheme can be embedded into the framework of hybrid mixed mimetic schemes and gradient schemes, and has close links to the lowest-order version of hybrid high-order methods devised for the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes…
A conforming discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method has been introduced in [21] on simplicial meshes, which has the flexibility of using discontinuous approximation and the simplicity in formulation of the classic continuous finite element method. The goal of this paper is to extend the conforming DG finite element method in \cite{cdg1} so that it can work on general polytopal meshes by designing weak gradient $\nabla_w$ appropriately. Two different conforming DG formulations on polytopal meshes are introduced which handle boundary conditions differently. Error estimates of optimal …
A new stabilizer free weak Galerkin (WG) method is introduced and analyzed for the biharmonic equation. Stabilizing/penalty terms are often necessary in the finite element formulations with discontinuous approximations to ensure the stability of the methods. Removal of stabilizers will simplify finite element formulations and reduce programming complexity. This stabilizer free WG method has an ultra simple formulation and can work on general partitions with polygons/polyhedra. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$ for $k\ge 2$ and in $L^2$ norm for $k>2$ are established for the cor…
The Hilbert spaces $H(\mathrm{curl})$ and $H(\mathrm{div})$ are needed for variational problems formulated in the context of the de Rham complex in order to guarantee well-posedness. Consequently, the construction of conforming subspaces is a crucial step in the formulation of viable numerical solutions. Alternatively to the standard definition of a finite element as per Ciarlet, given by the triplet of a domain, a polynomial space and degrees of freedom, this work aims to introduce a novel, simple method of directly constructing semi-continuous vectorial base functions on the reference elemen…
We devise a generalization of tree approximation that generates conforming meshes, i.e., meshes with a particular structure like edge-to-edge triangulations. A key feature of this generalization is that the choices of the cells to be subdivided are affected by that particular structure. As main result, we prove near best approximation with respect to conforming meshes, independent of constants like the completion constant for newest-vertex bisection. Numerical experiments complement the theoretical results and indicate better approximation properties than previous approaches.
A finite element cochain complex on Cartesian meshes of any dimension based on the H1-inner product is introduced. It yields H1-conforming finite element spaces with exterior derivatives in H1. We use a tensor product construction to obtain L2-stable projectors into these spaces which commute with the exterior derivative. The finite element complex is generalized to a family of arbitrary order.
A new numerical scheme is proposed for flow computation in complex discrete fracture networks. The method is based on a three-field formulation of the Darcy law for the description of the hydraulic head on the fractures and uses a cost functional to enforce the required coupling condition at fracture intersections. The resulting method can handle non conforming meshes, independently built on each geometrical object of the computational domain, and ensures local mass conservation properties at fracture intersections. An iterative solver is devised for the method, ready for parallel implementati…
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for nonlinear conservation laws reproduce a discrete entropy inequality by combining entropy conservative finite volume fluxes with summation-by-parts (SBP) discretization matrices. In the DG context, on tensor product (quadrilateral and hexahedral) elements, SBP matrices are typically constructed by collocating at Lobatto quadrature points. Recent work has extended the construction of entropy-stable DG schemes to collocation at more accurate Gauss quadrature points. In this work, we extend entropy-stable Gauss collocation schemes t…
In this paper, we extend the reinterpreted discrete fracture model for flow simulation of fractured porous media containing flow blocking barriers on non-conforming meshes. The methodology of the approach is to modify the traditional Darcy's law into the hybrid-dimensional Darcy's law where fractures and barriers are represented as Dirac-delta functions contained in the permeability tensor and resistance tensor, respectively. As a natural extension of the reinterpreted discrete fracture model for highly conductive fractures, this model is able to account for the influence of both highly conduc…
For most finite element simulations, boundary-conforming meshes have significant advantages in terms of accuracy or efficiency. This is particularly true for complex domains. However, with increased complexity of the domain, generating a boundary-conforming mesh becomes more difficult and time consuming. One might therefore decide to resort to an approach where individual boundary-conforming meshes are pieced together in a modular fashion to form a larger domain. This paper presents a stabilized finite element formulation for fluid and temperature equations on sliding meshes. It couples the so…

This paper constructs two conforming finite element grad grad and elasticity complexes on the cuboid meshes. For the finite element grad grad complex, an $H^2$ conforming finite element space, an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{curl}; \mathbb{S})$ conforming finite element space, an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{div}; \mathbb{T})$ conforming finite element space and an $\boldsymbol{L}^2$ finite element space are constructed. Further, a finite element complex with reduced regularity is also constructed, whose degrees of freedom for the three diagonal components are coupled. For the finite element…
A new numerical approach is proposed for the simulation of coupled three-dimensional and one-dimensional elliptic equations (3D-1D coupling) arising from dimensionality reduction of 3D-3D problems with thin inclusions. The method is based on a well posed mathematical formulation and results in a numerical scheme with high robustness and flexibility in handling geometrical complexities. This is achieved by means of a three-field approach to split the 1D problems from the bulk 3D problem, and then resorting to the minimization of a properly designed functional to impose matching conditions at th…
This paper focuses on the analysis of conforming virtual element methods for general second-order linear elliptic problems with rough source terms and applies it to a Poisson inverse source problem with rough measurements. For the forward problem, when the source term belongs to $H^{-1}(Ω)$, the right-hand side for the discrete approximation defined through polynomial projections is not meaningful even for standard conforming virtual element method. The modified discrete scheme in this paper introduces a novel companion operator in the context of conforming virtual element method and allows da…
A posteriori error estimates and adaptivity for locally conservative methods. Inexpensive implementation and evaluation, polytopal meshes, iterative linearization and algebraic solvers, and applications to complex porous media flows
The discrete fracture model (DFM) has been widely used in the simulation of fluid flow in fractured porous media. Traditional DFM uses the so-called hybrid-dimensional approach to treat fractures explicitly as low-dimensional entries (e.g. line entries in 2D media and face entries in 3D media) on the interfaces of matrix cells and then couple the matrix and fracture flow systems together based on the principle of superposition with the fracture thickness used as the dimensional homogeneity factor. Because of this methodology, DFM is considered to be limited on conforming meshes and thus may ra…
In this paper, a new $C^1$-conforming Petrov-Galerkin method for convection-diffusion equations is designed and analyzed. The trail space of the proposed method is a $C^1$-conforming ${\mathbb Q}_k$ (i.e., tensor product of polynomials of degree at most $k$) finite element space while the test space is taken as the $L^2$ (discontinuous) piecewise ${\mathbb Q}_{k-2}$ polynomial space. Existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is proved and optimal error estimates in all $L^2, H^1, H^2$-norms are established. In addition, superconvergence properties of the new method are investigated an…
