High-order accurate discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods have emerged as powerful tools for solving partial differential equations such as the compressible Navier-Stokes equations due to their excellent dispersion-dissipation properties and scalability on modern hardware. The open-source DG framework FLEXI has recently been extended to support DG schemes on general polytopal elements including tetrahedra, prisms, and pyramids. This advancement enables simulations on complex geometries where purely hexahedral meshes are difficult or impossible to generate. However, the use of meshes with heterogeneous element types introduces a workload imbalance, a consequence of the temporal evolution of modal rather than nodal degrees of freedom and the accompanying transformations. In this work, we present a lightweight, system-agnostic in-memory load balancing strategy designed for high-order DG solvers. The method employs high-precision runtime measurements and efficient data redistribution to dynamically reassign mesh elements along a space-filling curve. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach through simulations of the Taylor-Green vortex and large-scale parallel runs on the EuroHPC pre-exascale system MareNostrum 5. Results show that the proposed strategy recovers a significant fraction of the lost efficiency on heterogeneous meshes while retaining excellent strong and weak scaling.
A stabilizer free weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method on polytopal mesh has been introduced in Part I of this paper (J. Comput. Appl. Math, 371 (2020) 112699. arXiv:1906.06634.) Removing stabilizers from discontinuous finite element methods simplifies formulations and reduces programming complexity. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new WG method without stabilizers on polytopal mesh that has convergence rates one order higher than optimal convergence rates. This method is the first WG method that achieves superconvergence on polytopal mesh. Numerical examples in 2D and 3D are p…
A weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method without stabilizers was introduced in [J. Comput. Appl. Math., 371 (2020). arXiv:1906.06634] on polytopal mesh. Then it was improved in [arXiv:2008.13631] with order one superconvergence. The goal of this paper is to develop a new stabilizer free WG method on polytopal mesh. This method has convergence rates two orders higher than the optimal convergence rates for the corresponding WG solution in both an energy norm and the $L^2$ norm. The numerical examples are tested for low and high order elements in two and three dimensional spaces.
We design a Hybrid High-Order (HHO) scheme for the Poisson problem that is fully robust on polytopal meshes in the presence of small edges/faces. We state general assumptions on the stabilisation terms involved in the scheme, under which optimal error estimates (in discrete and continuous energy norms, as well as $L^2$-norm) are established with multiplicative constants that do not depend on the maximum number of faces in each element, or the relative size between an element and its faces. We illustrate the error estimates through numerical simulations in 2D and 3D on meshes designed by agglom…
A stabilizing/penalty term is often used in finite element methods with discontinuous approximations to enforce connection of discontinuous functions across element boundaries. Removing stabilizers from discontinuous finite element methods will simplify the formulations and reduce programming complexity significantly. The goal of this paper is to introduce a stabilizer free weak Galerkin finite element method for second order elliptic equations on polytopal meshes in 2D or 3D. This new WG method keeps a simple symmetric positive definite form and can work on polygonal/polyheral meshes. Optimal…
We investigate artificial compressibility (AC) techniques for the time discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The space discretization is based on a lowest-order face-based scheme supporting polytopal meshes, namely discrete velocities are attached to the mesh faces and cells, whereas discrete pressures are attached to the mesh cells. This face-based scheme can be embedded into the framework of hybrid mixed mimetic schemes and gradient schemes, and has close links to the lowest-order version of hybrid high-order methods devised for the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes…
A new stabilizer free weak Galerkin (WG) method is introduced and analyzed for the biharmonic equation. Stabilizing/penalty terms are often necessary in the finite element formulations with discontinuous approximations to ensure the stability of the methods. Removal of stabilizers will simplify finite element formulations and reduce programming complexity. This stabilizer free WG method has an ultra simple formulation and can work on general partitions with polygons/polyhedra. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$ for $k\ge 2$ and in $L^2$ norm for $k>2$ are established for the cor…
A new discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Stokes equations is developed in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. This method employs discontinuous polynomials for both velocity and pressure on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. Most finite element methods with discontinuous approximation have one or more stabilizing terms for velocity and for pressure to guarantee stability and convergence. This new finite element method has the standard conforming finite element formulation, without any velocity or pressure stabilizers. Optimal-order error estimates are established for…
A conforming discontinuous Galerkin finite element method is introduced for solving the biharmonic equation. This method, by its name, uses discontinuous approximations and keeps simple formulation of the conforming finite element method at the same time. The ultra simple formulation of the method will reduce programming complexity in practice. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$ norm is established for the corresponding finite element solutions. Error estimates in the $L^2$ norm are also derived with a sub-optimal order of convergence for the lowest order element and an optimal …
In this work we review discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods on polytopal grids (PolydG) for the numerical simulation of multiphysics wave propagation phenomena in heterogeneous media. In particular, we address wave phenomena in elastic, poro-elastic, and poro-elasto-acoustic materials. Wave propagation is modeled by using either the elastodynamics equation in the elastic domain, the acoustics equations in the acoustic domain and the low-frequency Biot's equations in the poro-elastic one. The coupling between different models is realized by means of (physically consistent) transmission…
In this work we present a generic framework for non-conforming finite elements on polytopal meshes, characterised by elements that can be generic polygons/polyhedra. We first present the functional framework on the example of a linear elliptic problem representing a single-phase flow in porous medium. This framework gathers a wide variety of possible non-conforming methods, and an error estimate is provided for this simple model. We then turn to the application of the functional framework to the case of a steady degenerate elliptic equation, for which a mass-lumping technique is required; here…
In this paper, we propose a new stabilizer free and pressure robust WG method for the Stokes equations with super-convergence on polytopal mesh in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. Convergence rates with one order higher than the optimal-order for velocity in both energy-norm and the $L^2$-norm and for pressure in $L^2$-norm are proved in our proposed scheme. The $H$(div)-preserving operator has been constructed based on the polygonal mesh for arbitrary polynomial degrees and employed in the body source assembling to break the locking phenomenon induced by poor mass conservation in th…
A conforming discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method has been introduced in [21] on simplicial meshes, which has the flexibility of using discontinuous approximation and the simplicity in formulation of the classic continuous finite element method. The goal of this paper is to extend the conforming DG finite element method in \cite{cdg1} so that it can work on general polytopal meshes by designing weak gradient $\nabla_w$ appropriately. Two different conforming DG formulations on polytopal meshes are introduced which handle boundary conditions differently. Error estimates of optimal …
This article presents a $P_0$ finite element method for boundary value problems for linear elasticity equations. The new method makes use of piecewise constant approximating functions on the boundary of each polytopal element, and is devised by simplifying and modifying the weak Galerkin finite element method based on $P_1/P_0$ approximations for the displacement. This new scheme includes a tangential stability term on top of the simplified weak Galerkin to ensure the necessary stability due to the rigid motion. The new method involves a small number of unknowns on each element; it is user-fri…
A posteriori error estimates and adaptivity for locally conservative methods. Inexpensive implementation and evaluation, polytopal meshes, iterative linearization and algebraic solvers, and applications to complex porous media flows
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are extensions of the usual Galerkin finite element methods. Although there are vast amount of studies on DG methods, most of them have assumed shape-regularity conditions on meshes for both theoretical error analysis and practical computations. In this paper, we present a new symmetric interior penalty DG scheme with a modified penalty term. We show that, without imposing the shape-regularity condition on the meshes, the new DG scheme inherits all of the good properties of standard DG methods, and is thus robust on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments …
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.
A stability-preserving polytopal discontinuous Galerkin method for the Fisher-Kolmogorov model with applications to neurodegenerative disease modelling
In this paper we present an immersed weak Galerkin method for solving second-order elliptic interface problems on polygonal meshes, where the meshes do not need to be aligned with the interface. The discrete space consists of constants on each edge and broken linear polynomials satisfying the interface conditions in each element. For triangular meshes, such broken linear plynomials coincide with the basis functions in immersed finite element methods [26]. We establish some approximation properties of the broken linear polynomials and the discrete weak gradient of a certain projection of the so…
