A weak Galerkin discretization of the boundary value problem of a general anisotropic diffusion problem is studied for preservation of the maximum principle. It is shown that the direct application of the $M$-matrix theory to the stiffness matrix of the weak Galerkin discretization leads to a strong mesh condition requiring all of the mesh dihedral angles to be strictly acute (a constant-order away from 90 degrees). To avoid this difficulty, a reduced system is considered and shown to satisfy the discrete maximum principle under weaker mesh conditions. The discrete maximum principle is then established for the full weak Galerkin approximation using the relations between the degrees of freedom located on elements and edges. Sufficient mesh conditions for both piecewise constant and general anisotropic diffusion matrices are obtained. These conditions provide a guideline for practical mesh generation for preservation of the maximum principle. Numerical examples are presented.
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are extensions of the usual Galerkin finite element methods. Although there are vast amount of studies on DG methods, most of them have assumed shape-regularity conditions on meshes for both theoretical error analysis and practical computations. In this paper, we present a new symmetric interior penalty DG scheme with a modified penalty term. We show that, without imposing the shape-regularity condition on the meshes, the new DG scheme inherits all of the good properties of standard DG methods, and is thus robust on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments …
We deal with the numerical solution of the compressible Euler equations with the aid of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with focus on the goal-oriented error estimates and adaptivity. We analyze the adjoint consistency of the DG scheme where the dual problem is not formulated by the differentiation of the DG form and the target functional but using a suitable linearization of the nonlinear forms. Further, we present the goal-oriented anisotropic $hp$-mesh adaptation technique for the Euler equations. The theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments.
In this paper we are concerned with plane wave discontinuous Galerkin (PWDG) methods for Helmholtz equation and time-harmonic Maxwell equations in three-dimensional anisotropic media, for which the coefficients of the equations are matrices instead of numbers. We first define novel plane wave basis functions based on rigorous choices of scaling transformations and coordinate transformations. Then we derive the error estimates of the resulting approximate solutions with respect to the condition number of the coefficient matrices, under a new assumption on the shape regularity of polyhedral mesh…
We consider spectral mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations of the Lamé system of linear elasticity in polyhedral domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In order to resolve possible corner, edge, and corner-edge singularities, anisotropic geometric edge meshes consisting of hexahedral elements are applied. We perform a computational study on the discrete inf-sup stability of these methods, and especially focus on the robustness with respect to the Poisson ratio close to the incompressible limit (i.e. the Stokes system). Furthermore, under certain realistic assumptions (for analytic da…

In magnetized plasmas of fusion devices the strong magnetic field leads to highly anisotropic physics where solution scales along field lines are much larger than perpendicular to it. Hence, regarding both accuracy and efficiency, a numerical method should allow to address parallel and perpendicular resolutions independently. In this work, we consider the eigenvalue problem of a two-dimensional anisotropic wave equation with variable coefficients which is a simplified model of linearized ideal magnetohydrodynamics. For this, we propose to use a mesh that is aligned with the magnetic field and …

Wave propagation in real media is affected by various non-trivial physical phenomena, e.g., anisotropy, an-elasticity and dissipation. Assumptions on the stress-strain relationship are an integral part of seismic modeling and determine the deformation and relaxation of the medium. Stress-strain relationships based on simplified rheologies will incorrectly predict seismic amplitudes, which are used for quantitative reservoir characterization. Constitutive equations for the rheological model include the generalized Hooke's law and Boltzmann's superposition principal with dissipation models based…

This paper proposes a fully implicit numerical scheme for immiscible incompressible two-phase flow in porous media taking into account gravity, capillary effects, and heterogeneity. The objective is to develop a fully implicit stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) solver for this system that is accurate, bound-preserving, and locally mass conservative. To achieve this, we augment our DG formulation with post-processing flux and slope limiters. The proposed framework is applied to several benchmark problems and the discrete solutions are shown to be accurate, to satisfy the maximum principle and l…

Three kinds of Fragile Points Methods based on Petrov-Galerkin weak-forms (PG-FPMs) are proposed for analyzing heat conduction problems in nonhomogeneous anisotropic media. This is a follow-up of the previous study on the original FPM based on a symmetric Galerkin weak-form. The trial function is piecewise-continuous, written as local Taylor expansions at the Fragile Points. A modified Radial Basis Function-based Differential Quadrature (RBF-DQ) method is employed for establishing the local approximation. The Dirac delta function, Heaviside step function, and the local fundamental solution of …
In this work, we extend the $τ$-estimation method to unsteady problems and use it to adapt the polynomial degree for high-order discontinuous Galerkin simulations of unsteady flows. The adaptation is local and anisotropic and allows capturing relevant unsteady flow features while enhancing the accuracy of time evolving functionals (e.g., lift, drag). To achieve an efficient and unsteady truncation error-based $p$-adaptation scheme, we first revisit the definition of the truncation error, studying the effect of the treatment of the mass matrix arising from the temporal term. Secondly, we extend…
We analyse the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for two-dimensional singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems. A class of layer-adapted meshes, including Shishkin- and Bakhvalov-type meshes, is discussed within a general framework. Local projections and their approximation properties on anisotropic meshes are used to derive error estimates for energy and "balanced" norms. Here, the energy norm is naturally derived from the bilinear form of LDG formulation and the "balanced" norm is artifically introduced to capture the boundary layer contribution. We establish a uniform converg…
A least-squares formulation of the Moving Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method with Interface Condition Enforcement (LS-MDG-ICE) is presented. This method combines MDG-ICE, which uses a weak formulation that separately enforces a conservation law and the corresponding interface condition and treats the discrete geometry as a variable, with the Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) methodology of Demkowicz and Gopalakrishnan to systematically generate optimal test functions from the trial spaces of both the discrete flow field and discrete geometry. For inviscid flows, LS-MDG-ICE detects …
In this paper, we design preconditioners for the matrix-free solution of high-order continuous and discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of elliptic problems based on FEM-SEM equivalence and additive Schwarz methods. The high-order operators are applied without forming the system matrix, making use of sum factorization for efficient evaluation. The system is preconditioned using a spectrally equivalent low-order ($p=1$) finite element operator discretization on a refined mesh. The low-order refined mesh is anisotropic and not shape regular in the polynomial degree of the high-order operator, …
In this paper we analyze the error as well for the semi-discretization as the full discretization of a time-dependent convection-diffusion problem. We use for the discretization in space the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method on a class of layer-adapted meshes including Shishkin-type and Bakhvalov-type meshes and the implicit $θ$-scheme in time. For piecewise tensor-product polynomials of degree $k$ we obtain uniform or almost uniform error estimates with respect to space of order $k+1/2$ in some energy norm and optimal error estimates with respect to time. Our analysis is based on care…

The local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method is studied for a third-order singularly perturbed problem of the convection-diffusion type. Based on a regularity assumption for the exact solution, we prove almost $O(N^{-(k+1/2)})$ (up to a logarithmic factor) energy-norm convergence uniformly in the perturbation parameter. Here, $k\geq 0$ is the maximum degree of piecewise polynomials used in discrete space, and $N$ is the number of mesh elements. The results are valid for the three types of layer-adapted meshes: Shishkin-type, Bakhvalov-Shishkin type, and Bakhvalov-type. Numerical experiments a…
In this paper, we describe a stable finite element formulation for advection-diffusion-reaction problems that allows for robust automatic adaptive strategies to be easily implemented. We consider locally vanishing, heterogeneous, and anisotropic diffusivities, as well as advection-dominated diffusion problems. The general stabilized finite element framework was described and analyzed in arXiv:1907.12605v3 for linear problems in general, and tested for pure advection problems. The method seeks for the discrete solution through a residual minimization process on a proper stable discontinuous Gal…
A high-order accurate implicit-mesh discontinuous Galerkin framework for wave propagation in single-phase and bi-phase solids is presented. The framework belongs to the embedded-boundary techniques and its novelty regards the spatial discretization, which enables boundary and interface conditions to be enforced with high-order accuracy on curved embedded geometries. High-order accuracy is achieved via high-order quadrature rules for implicitly-defined domains and boundaries, whilst a cell-merging strategy addresses the presence of small cut cells. The framework is used to discretize the govern…
We consider the time discretization of a linear parabolic problem by the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method using piecewise polynomials of degree at most $r-1$ in $t$, for $r\ge1$ and with maximum step size~$k$. It is well known that the spatial $L_2$-norm of the DG error is of optimal order $k^r$ globally in time, and is, for $r\ge2$, superconvergent of order $k^{2r-1}$ at the nodes. We show that on the $n$th subinterval $(t_{n-1},t_n)$, the dominant term in the DG error is proportional to the local right Radau polynomial of degree $r$. This error profile implies that the DG error is of order…

We present a posteriori error analysis in the supremum norm for the symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the elliptic obstacle problem. We construct discrete barrier functions based on appropriate corrections of the conforming part of the solution that is obtained via a constrained averaging operator. The corrector function accounts properly for the non-conformity of the approximation and it is estimated by direct use of the Green's function of the unconstrained elliptic problem. The use of the continuous maximum principle guarantees the validity of the analysis without…
Discrete maximum principle and a Delaunay-type mesh condition for linear finite element approximations of two-dimensional anisotropic diffusion problems
We investigate the piecewise linear nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviar and the lowest order Raviart-Thomas finite-element methods for the Poisson problem on three-dimensional anisotropic meshes. We first give error estimates of the Crouzeix-Raviart and the Raviart-Thomas finite-element approximate problems. We next present the equivalence between the Raviart-Thomas finite-element method and the enriched Crouzeix-Raviart finite-element method. We emphasise that we do not impose either shape-regular or maximum-angle condition during mesh partitioning. Numerical results confirm the results that we obt…
In this work we present a framework for enforcing discrete maximum principles in discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. The developed schemes are applicable to scalar conservation laws as well as hyperbolic systems. Our methodology for limiting volume terms is similar to recently proposed methods for continuous Galerkin approximations, while DG flux terms require novel stabilization techniques. Piecewise Bernstein polynomials are employed as shape functions for the DG spaces, thus facilitating the use of very high order spatial approximations. We discuss the design of a new, provably inv…
We develop a convergence theory of space-time discretizations for the linear, 2nd-order wave equation in polygonal domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$, possibly occupied by piecewise homogeneous media with different propagation speeds. Building on an unconditionally stable space-time DG formulation developed in [Moiola, Perugia 2018], we (a) prove optimal convergence rates for the space-time scheme with local isotropic corner mesh refinement on the spatial domain, and (b) demonstrate numerically optimal convergence rates of a suitable \emph{sparse} space-time version of the DG scheme. The latter sc…
