Wave propagation in real media is affected by various non-trivial physical phenomena, e.g., anisotropy, an-elasticity and dissipation. Assumptions on the stress-strain relationship are an integral part of seismic modeling and determine the deformation and relaxation of the medium. Stress-strain relationships based on simplified rheologies will incorrectly predict seismic amplitudes, which are used for quantitative reservoir characterization. Constitutive equations for the rheological model include the generalized Hooke's law and Boltzmann's superposition principal with dissipation models based on standard linear solids or a Zener approximation.
In this work, we introduce a high-order discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for wave equation in inhomogeneous and anisotropic dissipative medium. This method is based on a new symmetric treatment of the anisotropic viscoelastic terms, as well as an appropriate memory variable treatment of the stress-strain convolution terms. Together, these result in a symmetric system of first order linear hyperbolic partial differential equations. The accuracy of the proposed numerical scheme is proven and verified using convergence studies against analytical plane wave solutions and analytical solutions of viscoelastic wave equation. Computational experiments are shown for various combinations of homogeneous and heterogeneous viscoelastic media in two and three dimensions.
We introduce and analyze a stress-based formulation for Zener's model in linear viscoelasticity. The method is aimed to tackle efficiently heterogeneous materials that admit purely elastic and viscoelastic parts in their composition. We write the mixed variational formulation of the problem in terms of a class of tensorial wave equation and obtain an energy estimate that guaranties the well-posedness of the problem through a standard Galerkin procedure. We propose and analyze mixed continuous and discontinuous Galerkin space discretizations of the problem and derive optimal error bounds for ea…
This paper considers weak Galerkin finite element approximations for a quasistatic Maxwell viscoelastic model. The spatial discretization uses piecewise polynomials of degree $k \ (k\geq 1)$ for the stress approximation, degree $k+1$ for the velocity approximation, and degree $k$ for the numerical trace of velocity on the inter-element boundaries. The temporal discretization in the fully discrete method adopts a backward Euler difference scheme. We show the existence and uniqueness of the semi-discrete and fully discrete solutions, and derive optimal a priori error estimates. Numerical example…

We present a class of Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the incompressible flow with moving boundaries and interfaces including two-phase flow with surface tension.
This paper applies a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method to the Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic fluid motion equations when the forcing function is in $L^\infty({\bf L}^2)$-space. Optimal a priori error estimates in $L^\infty({\bf L}^2)$-norm for the velocity and in $L^\infty(L^2)$-norm for the pressure approximations for the semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin method are derived here. The main ingredients for establishing the error estimates are the standard elliptic duality argument and a modified version of the Sobolev-Stokes operator defined on appropriate broken Sobolev spaces. Furthe…
A new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element (HMDGFE) method is constructed for incompressible miscible displacement problem. In this method, the hybrid mixed finite element (HMFE) procedure is considered to solve pressure and velocity equations, and a new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin procedure is constructed to solve the concentration equation with upwind technique. Compared with other traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods, the new method can reach global systems with less unknowns and sparser stencils. The consistency and conservation of the method are analyzed, the s…
Existing a priori convergence results of the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method to solve the problem of linear elasticity are improved. Using duality arguments, we show that higher convergence rates for the displacement can be obtained. Post-processing techniques are introduced in order to prove superconvergence and numerical experiments {\color{black} confirm} our theory.
A discontinuous Galerkin pressure correction numerical method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is formulated and analyzed. We prove unconditional stability of the propose scheme. Convergence of the discrete velocity is established by deriving a priori error estimates. Numerical results verify the convergence rates.
In this paper, discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods are applied to one dimensional Rosenau equation. Theoretical results including consistency, a priori bounds and optimal error estimates are established for both semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes. Numerical experiments are performed to validate the theoretical results. The decay estimates are verified numerically for the Rosenau equation.
In this paper we propose a novel regularization strategy for the local discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the context of level-set reinitialization. The novel regularization idea works in analogy to shock-capturing schemes for discontinuous Galerkin methods, which are based on finite volume sub-cells. In this spirit, the local discontinuous Galerkin method is combined with an upwind/downwind finite volume sub-cell discretization, which is applied in areas of low regularity. To ensure the applicability on unstructured meshes, the finite volume discretization …
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.
In this paper, we provide a framework of designing the local discontinuous Galerkin scheme for integral fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{s}$ with $s\in(0,1)$ in two dimensions. We theoretically prove and numerically verify the numerical stability and convergence of the scheme with the convergence rate no worse than $\mathcal{O}(h^{k+\frac{1}{2}})$.
This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method for time fractional subdiffusion problems. The regularity of weak solution is firstly established by using variational approach and Mittag-Leffler function. Then several optimal error estimates are derived with low regularity data. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical results.
The pressure correction scheme is combined with interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. Optimal error estimates are derived for the velocity in the L$^2$ norm in time and in space. Error bounds for the discrete time derivative of the velocity and for the pressure are also established.
The hybrid Raviart-Thomas mixed discontinuous Galerkin (HRTMDG) method is proposed for solving the Helmholtz equation. With a new energy norm, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the HRTMDG method, and give its convergence analysis. The corresponding error estimate shows that the HRTMDG method has an optimal $L^2$-norm convergence accuracy which is independent of wavenumber.
We devise and analyze a class of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods for nonlinear and nonsmooth variational problems. Discrete duality relations are derived that lead to optimal error estimates in the case of total-variation regularized minimization or obstacle problems. The analysis provides explicit estimates that precisely determine the role of stabilization parameters. Numerical experiments suppport the optimality of the estimates.
We generalize the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method proposed in [SIAM J. Num. Anal., 53(6):2705-2726, 2015.] to second-order semilinear wave equations. A stability and convergence analysis is presented along with numerical experiments demonstrating optimal convergence for certain choices of the interelement fluxes. Applications to the sine-Gordon equation include simulations of breathers, kink, and anti-kink solitons.
For the stationary advection-diffusion problem the standard continuous Galerkin method is unstable without some additional control on the mesh or method. The interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is stable but at the expense of an increased number of degrees of freedom. The hybrid method proposed in [5] combines the computational complexity of the continuous method with the stability of the discontinuous method without a significant increase in degrees of freedom. We discuss the implementation of this method using the finite element library deal.ii and present some numerical experimen…
We present a strongly conservative and pressure-robust hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled time-dependent Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem. We show existence and uniqueness of a solution and present an optimal a priori error analysis for the fully discrete problem when using Backward Euler time stepping. The theoretical results are verified by numerical examples.
In this paper, we investigate a Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation for systems with balanced Orlicz-structure. We propose a new numerical flux, which yields optimal convergence rates for linear ansatz functions. In particular, our approach yields a unified treatment for problems with $(p,δ)$-structure for arbitrary $p \in (1,\infty)$ and $δ\ge 0$.
We introduce a homogeneous multigrid method in the sense that it uses the same embedded discontinuous Galerkin (EDG) discretization scheme for Poisson's equation on all levels. In particular, we use the injection operator developed in [LuRK2020] for HDG and prove optimal convergence of the method under the assumption of elliptic regularity. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.
The mixed form of the Cahn-Hilliard equations is discretized by the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method. For any chemical energy density, existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is obtained. The scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. Convergence of the method is obtained by deriving a priori error estimates that are valid for the Ginzburg-Lindau chemical energy density and for convex domains. The paper also contains discrete functional tools, namely discrete Agmon and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, which are proved to be valid in the hybridizable discontinuous Gale…
In this work, we propose and investigate stable high-order collocation-type discretisations of the discontinuous Galerkin method on equidistant and scattered collocation points. We do so by incorporating the concept of discrete least squares into the discontinuous Galerkin framework. Discrete least squares approximations allow us to construct stable and high-order accurate approximations on arbitrary collocation points, while discrete least squares quadrature rules allow us their stable and exact numerical integration. Both methods are computed efficiently by using bases of discrete orthogonal…
A discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for solving semilinear elliptic problem is developed and analyzed in this paper. The DG finite element discretizations are established, and the corresponding existence and uniqueness theorem is proved by using Brouwer's fixed point method. Some optimal priori error estimates under both DG norm and $L^2$ norm are presented. Numerical results are also shown to confirm the efficiency of the proposed approach.
In this paper, a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method of Nitsche's version for the Steklov eigenvalue problem in linear elasticity is presented. The a priori error estimates are analyzed under a low regularity condition, and the robustness with respect to nearly incompressible materials (locking-free) is proven. Furthermore, some numerical experiments are reported to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
We present a computational model of thin elastic bilayers that undergo large bending isometric deformations when actuated by non-mechanical stimuli. We propose a discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the variational formulation discussed in Bartels et al. (2018). We showcase its advantages and good computational performance with configurations of interest in both engineering and medicine and either Dirichlet or free boundary conditions.
The stress-strain constitutive law for viscoelastic materials such as soft tissues, metals at high temperature, and polymers, can be written as a Volterra integral equation of the second kind with a \emph{fading memory} kernel. This integral relationship yields current stress for a given strain history and can be used in the momentum balance law to derive a mathematical model for the resulting deformation. We consider such a dynamic linear viscoelastic model problem resulting from using a \textit{Dirichlet-Prony} series of decaying exponentials to provide the fading memory in the Volterra kern…
In this paper, we study the convergence of adaptive mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for H(curl)-elliptic problems. We first get the mixed model of H(curl)-elliptic problem by introducing a new intermediate variable. Then we discuss the continuous variational problem and discrete variational problem, which based on interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin approximation. Next, we construct the corresponding posteriori error indicator, and prove the contraction of the summation of the energy error and the scaled error indicator. At last, we confirm and illustrate the theoretic…
This paper proposes and analyzes a fully discrete scheme that discretizes space with an ultra-weak local discontinuous Galerkin scheme and time with the Crank--Nicolson method for the nonlinear biharmonic Schrödinger equation. We first rewrite the problem into a system with a second-order spatial derivative and then apply the ultra-weak discontinuous Galerkin method to the system. The proposed scheme is more computationally efficient compared with the local discontinuous Galerkin method because of fewer auxiliary variables, and unconditionally stable without any penalty terms; it also preserve…
In this paper, we design the first residual type a posteriori error estimator for mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the H(curl)-elliptic problems. Then we prove that our residual based a posteriori error indicator is both reliable and efficient. At last, we present some numerical experiments to validate the performance of the indicator within an adaptive mesh refinement procedure.
We combine the newly-constructed Galerkin difference basis with the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method for wave equations in second order form. The approximation properties of the resulting method are excellent and the allowable time steps are large compared to traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods. The one drawback of the combined approach is the cost of inversion of the local mass matrix. We demonstrate that for constant coefficient problems on Cartesian meshes this bottleneck can be removed by the use of a modified Galerkin difference basis. For variable coefficients or non-Car…
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
Fourier continuation is an approach used to create periodic extensions of non-periodic functions in order to obtain highly-accurate Fourier expansions. These methods have been used in PDE-solvers and have demonstrated high-order convergence and spectrally accurate dispersion relations in numerical experiments. Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are increasingly used for solving PDEs and, as all Galerkin formulations, come with a strong framework for proving stability and convergence. Here we propose the use of Fourier continuation in forming a new basis for the DG framework.
We propose a class of conservative discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Vlasov-Poisson system written as a hyperbolic system using Hermite polynomials in the velocity variable. These schemes are designed to be systematically as accurate as one wants with provable conservation of mass and possibly total energy. Such properties in general are hard to achieve within other numerical method frameworks for simulating the Vlasov-Poisson system. The proposed scheme employs discontinuous Galerkin discretization for both the Vlasov and the Poisson equations, resulting in a consistent description of th…
Element Method. The Finite Volume Method guarantees local and global mass conservation. A property not satisfied by the Finite Volume Method. On the down side, the Finite Volume Method requires non trivial modifications to attain high order approximations unlike the Finite Volume Method. It has been contended that the Discontinuous Galerkin Method, locally conservative and high order, is a natural progression for Coastal Ocean Modeling. Consequently, as a primer we consider the vertical ocean-slice model with the inclusion of density effects. To solve these non steady Partial Differential Equa…
