We generalize Burgess' results on partial Gaussian sums to arbitrary finite fields. The main ingredients are the classical method of amplification, two deep results on multiplicative energy for subsets in finite fields which are obtained respectively by the tools from additive combinatorics and geometry of numbers, and a technique of Chamizo for treating the difficulty caused by additive character. Our results include the recent works on character sums in finite fields by M.-C. Chang and S. V. Konyagin.
In this paper, we investigate the distribution of the maximum of partial sums of families of $m$-periodic complex valued functions satisfying certain conditions. We obtain precise uniform estimates for the distribution function of this maximum in a near optimal range. Our results apply to partial sums of Kloosterman sums and other families of $\ell$-adic trace functions, and are as strong as those obtained by Bober, Goldmakher, Granville and Koukoulopoulos for character sums. In particular, we improve on the recent work of the third author for Birch sums. However, unlike character sums, we are…
We show that under certain general conditions, short sums of $\ell$-adic trace functions over finite fields follow a normal distribution asymptotically when the origin varies, generalizing results of Erdős-Davenport, Mak-Zaharescu and Lamzouri. In particular, this applies to exponential sums arising from Fourier transforms such as Kloosterman sums or Birch sums, as we can deduce from the works of Katz. By approximating the moments of traces of random matrices in monodromy groups, a quantitative version can be given as in Lamzouri's article, exhibiting a different phenomenon than the averaging …
We investigate the distribution of the zeros of partial sums of the Riemann zeta-function, sum_{n\leq X}n^{-s}, estimating the number of zeros up to height T, the number of zeros to the right of a given vertical line, and other aspects of their horizontal distribution.
We study the character sums \[ϕ_{(m,n)}(a,b)=\sum_{x\in\mathbb{F}_q}ϕ\left(x(x^{m}+a)(x^{n}+b)\right),\textrm{ and, } ψ_{(m,n)}(a,b)=\sum_{x\in\mathbb{F}_q}ϕ\left((x^{m}+a)(x^{n}+b)\right)\] where $ϕ$ is the quadratic character defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$. These sums are expressed in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric series over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Then we use these expressions to exhibit the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points on families of hyperelliptic curves and their Jacobian varieties.
The purpose of this paper is to give some explicit formulas involving Möbius functions, which may be known under the generalized Riemann Hypothesis, but unconditional in this paper. Concretely, we prove explicit formulas of partial sums of the Möbius function in arithmetic progressions and partial sums of the Möbius functions on an Abelian number field $K$. In addition, to obtain these explicit formulas, we study a certain finite Euler product appearing from certain relation of primitive characters and imprimitive characters in the present paper.
In recent work, Hickerson and the author demonstrated that it is useful to think of Appell--Lerch sums as partial theta functions. This notion can be used to relate identities involving partial theta functions with identities involving Appell--Lerch sums. In this sense, Appell--Lerch sums and partial theta functions appear to be dual to each other. This duality theory is not unlike that found by Andrews between various sets of identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type with respect to Baxter's solution to the hard hexagon model of statistical mechanics. As an application we construct bilateral $q$-se…
The Landau-Selberg-Delange (LSD) method gives an asymptotic formula for the partial sums of a multiplicative function $f$ whose prime values are $α$ on average. In the literature, the average is usually taken to be $α$ with a very strong error term, leading to an asymptotic formula for the partial sums with a very strong error term. In practice, the average at the prime values may only be known with a fairly weak error term, and so we explore here how good an estimate this will imply for the partial sums of $f$, developing new techniques to do so.
Let $\mathcal L^+$ be the set of all primes $p$ for which the sums of $\left(\frac{n}{p}\right)$ over the interval $[1,N]$ are non-negative for all $N$. We prove that the estimate \[ |\mathcal L^+\cap [1,x]|\ll \frac{x}{\ln x(\ln\ln x)^{c-o(1)}} \] holds for $c\approx 0.0368$
Landau examined the partial sums of the Möbius function and the Liouville function for a number field $K$. First we shall try again the same problem by using a new Perron's formula due to Liu and Ye. Next we consider the equivalent theorem of the grand Riemann hypothesis for the Dedekind zeta-function of $K$ and that of the prime ideal theorem.
Kannan Soundararajan recently obtained a new estimate, conditional to the Riemann hypothesis, for the summatory function of the Mobius function. In this expository article we describe his method, with detailed computations.
Consider a multiplicative function f(n) taking values on the unit circle. Is it possible that the partial sums of this function are bounded? We show that if we weaken the notion of multiplicativity so that f(pn)=f(p)f(n) for all primes p in some finite set P, then the answer is yes. We also discuss a result of Bronstein that shows that functions modified from characters at a finite number of places.
Partial zeta functions of algebraic varieties over finite fields generalize the classical zeta function by allowing each variable to be defined over a possibly different extension field of a fixed finite field. Due to this extra variation their rationality is surprising, and even simple examples are delicate to compute. For instance, we give a detailed description of the partial zeta function of an affine curve where the number of unit poles varies, a property different from classical zeta functions. On the other hand, they do retain some properties similar to the classical case. To this end, …
Sarnak obtained the asymptotic formula of the sum of the class numbers of indefinite binary quadratic forms from the prime geodesic theorem for the modular group. In the present paper, we show several asymptotic formulas of partial sums of the class numbers by using the prime geodesic theorems for the congruence subgroups of the modular group.
The Mertens function, $M(x) := \sum_{n \leq x} μ(n)$, is defined as the summatory function of the classical Möbius function. The Dirichlet inverse function $g(n) := (ω+1)^{-1}(n)$ is defined in terms of the shifted strongly additive function $ω(n)$ that counts the number of distinct prime factors of $n$ without multiplicity. The Dirichlet generating function (DGF) of $g(n)$ is $ζ(s)^{-1} (1+P(s))^{-1}$ for $\Re(s) > 1$ where $P(s) = \sum_p p^{-s}$ is the prime zeta function. We study the distribution of the unsigned functions $|g(n)|$ with DGF $ζ(2s)^{-1}(1-P(s))^{-1}$ and $C_Ω(n)$ with DGF $(…
In this paper we obtain a new fully explicit constant for the Pólya-Vinogradov inequality for squarefree modulus. Given a primitive character $χ$ to squarefree modulus $q$, we prove the following upper bound \begin{align*} \left| \sum_{1 \le n\le N} χ(n) \right|\le c \sqrt{q} \log q, \end{align*} where $c=1/(2π^2)+o(1)$ for even characters and $c=1/(4π)+o(1)$ for odd characters, with an explicit $o(1)$ term. This improves a result of Frolenkov and Soundararajan for large $q$. We proceed via partial Gaussian sums rather than the usual Montgomery and Vaughan approach of exponential sums with mul…
We present a class of multiplicative functions $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$ with bounded partial sums. The novelty here is that our functions do not need to have modulus bounded by $1$. The key feature is that they pretend to be the constant function $1$ and that for some prime $q$, $\sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{f(q^k)}{q^k}=0$. These combined with other conditions guarantee that these functions are periodic and have sum equal to zero inside each period. Further, we study the class of multiplicative functions $f=f_1\ast f_2$, where each $f_j$ is multiplicative and periodic with bounded partial sums.…
For a nonempty finite set $A$ of positive integers, let $\gcd\left(A\right)$ denote the greatest common divisor of the elements of $A$. Let $f\left(n\right)$ and $Φ\left(n\right)$ denote, respectively, the number of subsets $A$ of $\left\{1, 2, \ldots, n\right\}$ such that $\gcd\left(A\right) = 1$ and the number of subsets $A$ of $\left\{1, 2, \ldots, n\right\}$ such that $\gcd\left(A\cup\left\{n\right\}\right) =1$. Let $D\left(n\right)$ be the divisor sum of $f\left(n\right)$. In this article, we obtain partial sums of $f\left(n\right)$, $Φ\left(n\right)$ and $D\left(n\right)$. We also obtain…
In this paper we obtain a new fully explicit constant for the Pólya-Vinogradov inequality for primitive characters. Given a primitive character $χ$ modulo $q$, we prove the following upper bound \begin{align*} \left| \sum_{1 \le n\le N} χ(n) \right|\le c \sqrt{q} \log q, \end{align*} where $c=3/(4π^2)+o_q(1)$ for even characters and $c=3/(8π)+o_q(1)$ for odd characters, with explicit $o_q(1)$ terms. This improves a result of Frolenkov and Soundararajan for large $q$. We proceed, following Hildebrand, obtaining the explicit version of a result by Montgomery--Vaughan on partial Gaussian sums and…
The classical Dedekind sums $s(d, c)$ can be represented as sums over the partial quotients of the continued fraction expansion of the rational $\frac{d}{c}$. Hardy sums, the analog integer-valued sums arising in the transformation of the logarithms of $θ$-functions under a subgroup of the modular group, have been shown to satisfy many properties which mirror the properties of the classical Dedekind sums. The representation as sums of partial quotients has, however, been missing so far. We define non-classical continued fractions and prove that Hardy sums can be expressed as a sums of partial …
We consider Mertens' function M(x,q,a) in arithmetic progression, Assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis (GRH), we show an upper bound that is uniform for all moduli which are not too large. For the proof, a former method of K. Soundararajan is extended to L-series.
We provide examples of multiplicative functions $f$ supported on the $k$-free integers such that at primes $f(p)=\pm 1$ and such that the partial sums of $f$ up to $x$ are $o(x^{1/k})$. Further, if we assume the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, then we can improve the exponent $1/k$: There are examples such that the partial sums up to $x$ are $o(x^{1/(k+\frac{1}{2})+ε})$, for all $ε>0$. This generalizes to the $k$-free integers the results of Aymone, `` A note on multiplicative functions resembling the {M}öbius function'', J. Number Theory, 212 (2020), pp. 113--121.
In this article, we study the zeros of the partial sums of the Dedekind zeta function of a cyclotomic field $K$ defined by the truncated Dirichlet series \[ ζ_{K, X} (s) = \sum_{\|\mathfrak{a}\| \leq X} \frac{1}{\|\mathfrak{a}\|^{s}}, \] where the sum is to be taken over nonzero integral ideals $\mathfrak{a}$ of $K$ and $\|\mathfrak{a}\|$ denotes the absolute norm of $\mathfrak{a}$. Specifically, we establish the zero-free regions for $ζ_{K, X} (s)$ and estimate the number of zeros of $ζ_{K, X} (s)$ up to height $T$.
We produce congruences modulo a prime $p>3$ for sums $\sum_k\binom{3k}{k}x^k$ over ranges $0\le k<q$ and $0\le k<q/3$, where $q$ is a power of $p$. Here $x$ equals either $c^2/(1-c)^3$, or $4s^2/\bigl(27(s^2-1)\bigr)$, where $c$ and $s$ are indeterminates. In the former case we deal more generally with shifted binomial coefficients $\binom{3k+e}{k}$. Our method derives such congruences directly from closed forms for the corresponding series.
This paper provides a technique for evaluating some nonlinear Gaussian sums in closed forms. The evaluation is obtained from the known values of simpler exponential sums.
This article considers the positive integers $N$ for which $ζ_{N}(s) = \sum_{n=1}^{N} n^{-s}$ has zeroes in the half-plane $\Re(s)>1$. Building on earlier results, we show that there are no zeroes for $1\leq N\leq 18$ and for $N=20, 21, 28$. For all other $N$ there are infinitely many zeroes.
We study sums of arithmetic functions, defined on Gaussian integers and taken over those pairs of integers whose coordinates give rise to a singular system.
We prove the Kloosterman-Spectral sum formula for PSL(2,Z[i])\PSL(2,C), and apply it to derive an explicit spectral expansion for the fourth power moment of the Dedekind zeta function of the Gaussian number field. This sum formula allows the extension of the spectral theory of Kloosterman sums to all algebraic number fields.
We consider a certain class of multiplicative functions $f: \mathbb N \rightarrow \mathbb C$. Let $F(s)= \sum_{n=1}^\infty f(n)n^{-s}$ be the associated Dirichlet series and $F_N(s)= \sum_{n\le N} f(n)n^{-s}$ be the truncated Dirichlet series. In this setting, we obtain new Halász-type results for the logarithmic mean value of $f$. More precisely, we prove estimates for the sum $\sum_{n=1}^x f(n)/n$ in terms of the size of $|F(1+1/\log x)|$ and show that these estimates are sharp. As a consequence of our mean value estimates, we establish non-trivial zero-free regions for these partial sums $F…
We prove the existence of reciprocity formulae for sums of the form $\sum_{m=1}^{k-1}f(\frac{m}{k})\cot(π\frac{m h}k)$ where $f$ is a piecewise $C^1$ function, featuring an alternating phenomenon not visible in the clas…
We provide a simple proof that the partial sums $\sum_{n\leq x}f(n)$ of a Rademacher random multiplicative function $f$ change sign infinitely often as $x\to\infty$, almost surely.
The Landau-Selberg-Delange method provides an asymptotic formula for the partial sums of a multiplicative function whose average value on primes is a fixed complex number $v$. The shape of this asymptotic implies that $f$ can get very small on average only if $v=0,-1,-2,\dots$. Moreover, if $v<0$, then the Dirichlet series associated to $f$ must have a zero of multiplicity $-v$ at $s=1$. In this paper, we prove a converse result that shows that if $f$ is a multiplicative function that is bounded by a suitable divisor function, and $f$ has very small partial sums, then there must be finitely ma…
Let $<¶> \subset \N$ be a multiplicative subsemigroup of the natural numbers $\N = \{1,2,3,...\}$ generated by an arbitrary set $¶$ of primes (finite or infinite). We given an elementary proof that the partial sums $\sum_{n \in < ¶>: n \leq x} \frac{μ(n)}{n}$ are bounded in magnitude by 1. With the aid of the prime number theorem, we also show that these sums converge to $\prod_{p \in ¶} (1 - \frac{1}{p})$ (the case when $¶$ is all the primes is a well-known observation of Landau). Interestingly, this convergence holds even in the presence of non-trivial zeroes and poles of the associated zeta…
Recently, Chu studied some properties of the partial sums of the sequence $P^k(F_n)$, where $P(F_n)=\big(\sum_{i=1}^nF_i\big)_{n\geq1}$ and $(F_n)_{n\geq1}$ is the Fibonacci sequence, and gave its combinatorial interpretation. We generalize those results, introduce colored Schreier sets, and give another equivalent combinatorial interpretation by means of lattice path.
Let $(F_n)_{n\ge 1}$ be the Fibonacci sequence. Define $P(F_n): = (\sum_{i=1}^n F_i)_{n\ge 1}$; that is, the function $P$ gives the sequence of partial sums of $(F_n)$. In this paper, we first give an identity involving $P^k(F_n)$, which is the resulting sequence from applying $P$ to $(F_n)$ $k$ times. Second, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of the numbers in $P^k(F_n)$.
Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis we establish an upper bound for the sum of the M{\" o}bius function up to $x$. Our method is based on estimating the frequency with which intervals of a given length can contain an unusual number of ordinates of zeros of the Riemann zeta-function.
The paper gives some criteria for partial sums of rational number sequences to be not rational functions and to be not algebraic functions. As an application, we study partial sums of some famous rational number sequences in mathematical analysis with relevance to number theory.
We define a generalized class of modified zeta series transformations generating the partial sums of the Hurwitz zeta function and series expansions of the Lerch transcendent function. The new transformation coefficients we define within the article satisfy expansions by generalized harmonic number sequences, or the partial sums of the Hurwitz zeta function, which are analogous to known properties for the Stirling numbers of the first kind and for the known transformation coefficients employed to enumerate variants of the polylogarithm function series. Applications of the new results we prove …
We consider partial sums of a weighted Steinhaus random multiplicative function and view this as a model for the Riemann zeta function. We give a description of the tails and high moments of this object. Using these we determine the likely maximum of $T \log T$ independently sampled copies of our sum and find that this is in agreement with a conjecture of Farmer--Gonek--Hughes on the maximum of the Riemann zeta function. We also consider the question of almost sure bounds. We determine upper bounds on the level of squareroot cancellation and lower bounds which suggest a degree of cancellation …
