Motivated by recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on surfaces of Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x'}$\cite{yazdanistm,gomesstm} and Bi$_2$Te$_3$,\cite{kaptunikstm,xuestm} we theoretically study the electronic structure of a 3-dimensional (3D) topological insulator in the presence of a local impurity or a domain wall on its surface using a 3D lattice model. While the local density of states (LDOS) oscillates significantly in space at energies above the bulk gap, the oscillation due to the in-gap surface Dirac fermions are very weak. The extracted modulation wave number as a function of energy satisfies the Dirac dispersion for in-gap energies and follows the border of the bulk continuum above the bulk gap. We have also examined analytically the effects of the defects by using a pure Dirac fermion model for the surface states and found that the LDOS decays asymptotically faster at least by a factor of 1/r than that in normal metals, consistent with the results obtained from our lattice model.
We theoretically investigate the exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in ultrathin Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator films by taking into account the low-energy states produced by the impurities. We find that the locally induced impurity resonances strongly influence the exchange interaction between magnetic moments. In particular, we find a non-collinear alignment being more favorable than the collinear ferromagnetic alignment preferred when impurity states are ignored and only the pristine topological insulator band structure is considered. Moreover, we show that by applying of …
The impact of surface morphology on electronic structure of topological crystalline insulators is studied theoretically. As an example, the structure of topologically protected electronic states on a (001) (Pb,Sn)Se surface with terraces of atomic height is modeled. Within the envelope function model it is shown that valley mixing, the phenomenon responsible for the peculiar "double Dirac cone" shape of the surface state dispersion, depends crucially on the structure of the surface. By varying the width and the number of atomic layers in the terraces, a comprehensive explanation of recent expe…
The influence of individual impurities of Fe on the electronic properties of topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is studied by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. The microscope tip is used in order to remotely charge/discharge Fe impurities. The charging process is shown to depend on the impurity location in the crystallographic unit cell, on the presence of other Fe impurities in the close vicinity, as well as on the overall doping level of the crystal. We present a qualitative explanation of the observed phenomena in terms of tip-induced local band bending. Our observations evidence that the spec…
Using a three-dimensional microscopic lattice model of a strong topological insulator (TI) we study potential impurities and vacancies in surface and subsurface positions. For all impurity locations we find impurity-induced resonance states with energy proportional to the inverse of the impurity strength, although the impurity strength needed for a low-energy resonance state increases with the depth of the impurity. For strong impurities and vacancies as deep as 15 layers into the material, resonance peaks will appear at and around the Dirac point in the surface energy spectrum, splitting the …
We address the electronic structure of the surface states of topological insulator thin films with embedded local non-magnetic and magnetic impurities. Using the $T$-matrix expansion of the real space Green's function, we derive the local density of electrons states and corresponding spin resolved densities. We show that the effects of the impurities can be tuned by applying an electric field between the surface layers. The emerging magnetic states are expected to play an important role both in ferromagnetic mechanism of magnetic topological insulators as well as in its transport properties. I…
The massless Dirac electrons found at topological insulator surfaces are thought to be influenced very little by weak, non-magnetic disorder. However, a resonance effect of strongly perturbing non-magnetic impurities has been theoretically predicted to change the dispersion and physical nature of low-energy quasiparticles, resulting in unique particle-like states that lack microscopic translational symmetry. Here we report the direct observation of impurities reshaping the surface Dirac cone of the model 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3. For the first time, a pronounced kink-like dispersion fea…
We show that the energy gap induced by ferromagnetically aligned magnetic impurities on the surface of a topological insulator can be filled, due to scattering off the non-magnetic potential of the impurities. In both a continuum surface model and a three-dimensional tight-binding lattice model, we find that the energy gap disappears already at weak potential scattering as impurity resonances add spectral weight at the Dirac point. This can help explain seemingly contradictory experimental results as to the existence of a gap.
Chern insulators arguably provide the simplest examples of topological phases. They are characterized by a topological invariant and can be identified by the presence of protected edge states. In this article, we show that a local impurity in a Chern insulator induces a twofold response: bound states that carry a chiral current and a net current circulating around the impurity. This is a manifestation of broken time symmetry and persists even for an infinitesimal impurity potential. To illustrate this, we consider a Coulomb impurity in the Haldane model. Working in the low-energy long-waveleng…
Topological insulators (TIs) are said to be stable against non-magnetic impurity scattering due to suppressed backscattering in the Dirac surface states. We solve a lattice model of a three-dimensional TI in the presence of strong potential impurities and find that both the Dirac point and low-energy states are significantly modified: low-energy impurity resonances are formed that produce a peak in the density of states near the Dirac point, which is destroyed and split into two nodes that move off-center. The impurity-induced states penetrate up to 10 layers into the bulk of the TI. These fin…
Current-phase relation in a Josephson junction formed by putting two s-wave superconductors on the same edge of a two dimensional topological insulator is investigated. We consider the case that the junction length is finite and magnetic impurity exists. The similarity and difference with conventional Josephson junction is discussed. The current is calculated in the semiconductor picture. Both the $2π$- and $4π$-period current-phase relations ($I_{2π}(ϕ), I_{4π}(ϕ)$) are studied. There is a sharp jump at $ϕ=π$ and $ϕ=2π$ for $I_{2π}$ and $I_{4π}$ respectively in the clean junction. For $I_{2π}…
Charge transport in topological insulators is primarily characterised by so-called topologically projected helical edge states, where charge carriers are correlated in spin and momentum. In principle, dissipation-less current can be carried by these edge states as backscattering from impurities and defects is suppressed as long as time-reversal symmetry is not broken. However, applied magnetic fields or underlying nuclear spin-defects in the substrate can break this time reversal symmetry. In particular, magnetic impurities lead to back-scattering by spin-flip processes. We have investigated t…
We investigate the effect of a non-magnetic donor impurity located at the surface of the SnTe topological crystalline insulator. In particular, the changes on the surface states due to a Sb impurity atom are analyzed by means of ab initio simulations of pristine and impurity-doped SnTe. Both semi-infinite and slab geometries are considered within the first-principles approach. Furthermore, minimal and Green's function continuum models are proposed with the same goal. We find that the Dirac cones are shifted down in energy upon doping; this shift strongly depends on the position of the impurity…
We show that the local in-gap Greens function of a band insulator $\mathbf{G}_0 (ε,\mathbf{k}_{\parallel},\mathbf{r}_{\perp}=0)$, with $\mathbf{r}_\perp$ the position perpendicular to a codimension-1 or -2 impurity, reveals the topological nature of the phase. For a topological insulator, the eigenvalues of this Greens function attain zeros in the gap, whereas for a trivial insulator the eigenvalues remain nonzero. This topological classification is related to the existence of in-gap bound states along codimension-1 and -2 impurities. Whereas codimension-1 impurities can be viewed as 'soft edg…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of Bi2Se3 epitaxial films on Si (111) substrates reveal highly localized unitary impurity resonances associated with non-magnetic quantum impurities. The strength of the resonances depends on the energy difference between the Fermi level ({E_F}) and the Dirac point ({E_D}) and diverges as {E_F} approaches {E_D}. The Dirac-cone surface state of the host recovers within ~ 2Å spatial distance from impurities, suggesting robust topological protection of the surface state of topological insulators against high-density impurities that preserve time reversal s…
We investigate in-gap states emerging when a single $3d$ transition metal impurity is embedded in topological insulators (Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$). We use a combined approach relying on first-principles calculations and an Anderson impurity model. By computing the local density of states of Cr, Mn, Fe and Co embedded not only in surfaces of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ but also in their bulk phases, we demonstrate that in-gap states originate from the hybridization of the electronic states of the impurity with bulk bands and not with the topological surface states as it is usually as…
We consider the effects of impurities on topological insulators and superconductors. We start by identifying the general conditions under which the eigenenergies of an arbitrary Hamiltonian H belonging to one of the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes undergo a robust zero energy crossing as a function of an external parameter which can be, for example, the impurity strength. We define a generalized root of \det H, and use it to predict or rule out robust zero-energy crossings in all symmetry classes. We complement this result with an analysis based on almost degenerate perturbation theory, whi…
A two-dimensional superconductor (SC) on surfaces of topological insulators (TIs) is a mixture of s-wave and helical p-wave components when induced by s-wave interactions, since spin and momentum are correlated. On the basis of the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, we reveal that unconventional SCs on the surfaces of TIs are stable against time-reversal symmetric (TRS) impurities within a region of small impurity concentration. Moreover, we analyze the stability of the SC on the surfaces of TIs against impurities beyond the perturbation theory by solving the real-space Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation fo…
We demonstrate that a quantum spin Hall current, spontaneously generated at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator, acts as a source of spin-pumping for a magnetic impurity with uniaxial anisotropy. One can then manipulate the impurity spin direction by means of an electrical current without using either magnetic electrodes or an external magnetic field. Furthermore we show that the unique properties of the quantum spin Hall topological state have profound effects on the inelastic electron tunneling spectrum of the impurity. For low current densities inelastic spin-flip events do …
We consider periodically driven potential impurities coupled to the surface states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. The problem is addressed by means of two models, out which the first model is an effective continuum Hamiltonian for the surface states, whereas the Kane-Mele lattice model is our second approach. While both models result in drastic changes in the local density of electron states with increasing amplitude and frequency of the driving field, the linearly low energy local density of electron states remains in the continuum model, however, with an increased Fermi velocity…
We calculate exact zero-temperature real space properties of a substitutional magnetic impurity coupled to the edge of a zigzag silicene-like nanoribbon. Using a Lanczos transformation [Phys. Rev. B 91, 085101 (2015)] and the density matrix renormalization group method, we obtain a realistic description of stanene and germanene that includes the bulk and the edges as boundary one-dimensional helical metallic states. Our results for substitutional impurities indicate that the development of a Kondo state and the structure of the spin correlations between the impurity and the electron spins in t…
For atomic thin layer insulating materials we provide an exact analytic form of the two-dimensional screened potential. In contrast to three-dimensional systems where the macroscopic screening can be described by a static dielectric constant in 2D systems the macroscopic screening is non local (q-dependent) showing a logarithmic divergence for small distances and reaching the unscreened Coulomb potential for large distances. The cross-over of these two regimes is dictated by 2D layer polarizability that can be easily computed by standard first-principles techniques. The present results have st…
Prototypes of quantum impurities (QI), such as NV and SiV centers in diamond, have been recently growing in popularity due to their minimally invasive and high-resolution magnetic field sensing. Here, we focus on quantum-impurity relaxometry as a method to probe collective excitations in magnetic insulators. We develop a general framework that relates the experimentally-measurable quantum-impurity relaxation rates to the properties of a magnetic system via the noise emitted by the latter. We suggest that, when the quantum-impurity frequency lies within the spin-wave gap, quantum-impurity relax…
We study weak anti-localization (WAL) effect in topological insulator Bi2Te3 thin films at low temperatures. Two-dimensional WAL effect associated with surface carriers is revealed in the tilted magnetic field dependence of magneto-conductance. Our data demonstrates that the observed WAL is robust against deposition of non-magnetic Au impurities on the surface of the thin films. But it is quenched by deposition of magnetic Fe impurities which destroy the pi Berry's phase of the topological surface states. The magneto-conductance data of a 5 nm Bi2Te3 film suggests that a crossover from symplec…
We report a detailed study on low-frequency 1/f-noise in large-area molecular-beam epitaxy grown thin (10 nm) films of topological insulators as a function of temperature, gate voltage, and magnetic field. When the Fermi energy is within the bulk valence band, the temperature dependence reveals a clear signature of generation-recombination noise in the defect states in the bulk band gap. However, when the Fermi energy is tuned to the bulk band gap, the gate voltage dependence of noise shows that the resistance fluctuations in surface transport are caused by correlated mobility-number density f…
We theoretically address the impact of a random distribution of non-magnetic impurities on the surface states formed at the interface between a trivial and a topological insulator. The interaction of electrons with the impurities is accounted for by a separable pseudo-potential method that allows us to obtain closed expressions for the density of states. Spectral properties of surface states are assessed by means of the Green's function averaged over disorder realizations. For comparison purposes, the configurationally averaged Green's function is calculated by means of two different self-cons…
By generalizing the Kubo-Streda formula for calculating electrical conductivities to the thermoelectric coefficients, we theoretically study the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) on the surface of a topological insulator induced by a finite concentration of magnetic impurities. The ANE is found to be modulated by the impurity scattering and thermal fluctuations, simultaneously, and so exhibits rich structures in the energy space. While the anomalous Hall conductivity is half-integer quantized with the Fermi level across the magnetic-impurity-induced gap, the anomalous Nernst signal (ANS) is fully …
Although topological insulators (TIs) are known to be robust against non-magnetic perturbations and exhibit edge or surface states as their distinct feature, experimentally it is known that vacancies often occur in these materials and impose strong perturbations. Here we investigate effects of vacancies on the stability of Z$_{2}$ topological order using the Kane-Mele (KM) model as a prototype of topological insulator. It is shown that even though a vacancy is not classified as a topological defect in KM model, it generally induces a pair of degenerate midgap states only in the TI phase. We sh…
While standard scaling arguments show that a system of non-interacting electrons in two dimensions and in the presence of uncorrelated disorder is insulating, in this work we discuss the case where inter-impurity correlations are included. We find that for point-like impurities and an infinite inter-impurity correlation length a mobility edge exists in 2D even if the individual impurity potentials are random. In the uncorrelated system we recover the scaling results, while in the intermediate regime for length scales comparable to the correlation length, the system behaves like a metal but wit…
We calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ of the surface states {in cubic topological Kondo insulators}. We consider a generic model for the surface states with three Dirac cones on the (001) surface. The Fermi velocity, the Fermi momentum and the Zeeman energy in different Dirac pockets may be unequal. The microscopic impurity potential mediates mixed intra and interband extrinsic scattering processes. Our calculation of $σ_{xy}$ is based on the Kubo-Streda diagrammatic approach. It includes diffractive skew scattering contributions originating from the rare two-impurity complexes…

Band structures of topological insulators are characterized by non-local topological invariants. Consequently, proposals for the experimental detection using local probes are rare. A recent paper [Slager et al., Phys. Rev. B 92, 085126 (2015)] has argued, based on theoretical results for a particular class of models, that insulators with topologically trivial and non-trivial band structures in two space dimensions display a qualitatively different response to point-like impurities. Here we present a comprehensive investigation of the impurity response of a large set of models of non-interactin…
At the interface of an s-wave superconductor and a three-dimensional topological insulator, Ma- jorana zero modes and Majorana helical states have been proposed to exist respectively around magnetic vortices and geometrical edges. Here we first show that a single magnetic impurity at such an interface splits each resonance state of a given spin channel outside the superconducting gap, and also induces two new symmetric impurity states inside the gap. Next we find that an increase in the superconducting gap suppresses both the oscillation magnitude and period of the RKKY inter- action between t…
We solve the problem of a magnetic impurity coupled to a U(1) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface and compute the impurity spectral function. Using the slave rotor mean field approach combined with gauge field fluctuations, we find that a peak located at the top of the lower Hubbard band and one at the bottom of the upper Hubbard band can emerge in the impurity spectral function. The peaks at the Hubbard band edges arise from the gauge field fluctuations induced spinon chargon binding inside the spinon Kondo screening cloud of the magnetic impurity. For a magnetic impurity embedded i…
We investigate the properties of a single substitutional Mn impurity and its associated acceptor state on the (111) surface of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator. Combining ab initio calculations with microscopic tight-binding modeling, we identify the effects of inversion-symmetry and time-reversal-symmetry breaking on the electronic states in the vicinity of the Dirac point. In agreement with experiments, we find evidence that the Mn ion is in the ${+2}$-valence state and introduces an acceptor in the bulk band gap. The Mn-acceptor has predominantly $p$-character, and is localized mainly aro…
Quantum spin-orbital liquids are elusive strongly correlated states of matter that emerge from quantum frustration between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. A promising route towards the observation of those states is the creation of artificial Mott insulators where antiferromagnetic correlations between spins and orbitals can be designed. We show that Coulomb impurity lattices on the surface of gapped honeycomb substrates, such as graphene on SiC, can be used to simulate SU(4) symmetric spin-orbital lattice models. We exploit the property that massive Dirac fermions form mid-gap bound stat…

Magnetically-doped topological insulators are intensely studied in the search for exotic phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect. The interplay of electronic and impurity degrees of freedom leads to the Kondo effect, an increase in the resistivity at temperatures $T < T_K$, the Kondo temperature. We study this effect in chiral surface state transport at $T \ge T_K$ in the metallic regime, starting from the quantum Liouville equation and including Kondo scattering to all orders, as well as phonon and non-magnetic impurity scattering. Unlike spin-orbit coupled metals and semiconducto…
We theoretically study the effect of impurity resonances on the indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in the surface states of a three-dimensional topological insulator. The interaction is composed of an isotropic Heisenberg, and anisotropic Ising and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya contributions. We find that all three contributions are finite at the Dirac point, which is in stark contrast to the linear response theory which predicts a vanishing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya contribution. We show that the spin-independent component of the impurity scattering can generate large values of the…
The high index (441) surface of bismuth has been studied using Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM), Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (APRES) and spin-resolved ARPES. The surface is strongly corrugated, exposing a regular array of (110)-like terraces. Two surface localised states are observed, both of which are linearly dispersing in one in-plane direction ($k_x$), and dispersionless in the orthogonal in-plane direction ($k_y$), and both of which have a Dirac-like crossing at $k_x$=0. Spin ARPES reveals a strong in-plane polarisation, consistent with Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling. O…
Impurities embedded in electronic systems induce bound states which under certain circumstances can hybridize and lead to impurity bands. Doping of insulators with impurities has been identified as a promising route towards engineering electronic topological states of matter. In this paper we show how to realize tuneable Chern insulators starting from a three dimensional topological insulator whose surface is gapped and intentionally doped with magnetic impurities. The main advantage of the protocol is that it is robust, and in particular not very sensitive to the impurity configuration. We ex…
We compute the multifractal spectra associated to local density of states (LDOS) fluctuations due to weak quenched disorder, for a single Dirac fermion in two spatial dimensions. Our results are relevant to the surfaces of Z_2 topological insulators such as Bi_2Se_3 and Bi_2Te_3, where LDOS modulations can be directly probed via scanning tunneling microscopy. We find a qualitative difference in spectra obtained for magnetic versus non-magnetic disorder. Randomly polarized magnetic impurities induce quadratic multifractality at first order in the impurity density; by contrast, no operator exhib…
We identify the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling as the source of the dominant spin-relaxation mechanism in the impurity band of doped semiconductors. The Dresselhaus-type (i.e. allowed by bulk-inversion asymmetry) hopping terms are derived and incorporated into a tight-binding model of impurity sites, and they are shown to unexpectedly dominate the spin relaxation, leading to spin-relaxation times in good agreement with experimental values. This conclusion is drawn from two complementary approaches employed to extract the spin-relaxation time from the effective Hamiltonian: an analytical diffu…
Unique electronic band structure of graphene with its semi-metallic features near the charge neutrality point is sensitive to impurity effects. Using the Lifshitz and Anderson impurity models, we study in detail the disorder induced spectral phenomena in the electronic band structure of graphene, namely, the formation of resonances, quasi-gaps, bound states, impurity sub-bands, and their overall impact on the electronic band restructuring and the associated Mott-like metal-insulator transitions. We perform systematic analytical and numerical study for realistic impurities, both substitutional …
Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is a topological insulator whose unique properties result from topological surface states (TSS) in the band gap. The adsorption of Cs onto a Bi$_2$Se$_3$ surface is investigated by low energy ion scattering and work function measurements. Much of the deposited Cs quickly diffuses to the step edges forming one-dimensional chains of positively charged adatoms, along with some deposition on the terraces. The work function decreases until a coverage of 0.1 ML is reached, beyond which it increases slightly. The minimum in the work function is due to depolarization of the dipoles induce…
We consider a magnetic impurity deposited on the surface of a strong topological insulator and interacting with the surface modes by a Kondo exchange interaction. Taking into account the warping of the Fermi line of the surface modes, we derive a mapping to an effective one dimensional model and show that the impurity is fully screened by the surface electrons except when the Fermi level lies exactly at the Dirac point. Using an Abrikosov fermion mean-field theory, we calculate the shape of the electronic density Friedel oscillation resulting from the presence of the Kondo screening cloud. We …
Topological insulators exhibit gapless edge or surface states that are topologically protected by time-reversal symmetry. However, several promising candidates for topologically insulating materials (such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and HgTe) contain spinful nuclei or other types of magnetic impurities that break time-reversal symmetry. We investigate the consequences of such impurities coupled to electronic edge states in a topological insulator quantum ring threaded by a magnetic flux. We use spin conservation and additional symmetry arguments to derive a universal formula for the spectrum of propagatin…
We construct a theory of charge transport by the surface states of topological insulators in three dimensions. The focus is on the experimentally relevant case when the electron doping is such that the Fermi energy $ε_F$ and transport scattering time $τ$ satisfy $ε_F τ/\hbar \gg 1$, but sufficiently low that $ε_F$ lies below the bottom of the conduction band. Our theory is based on the spin density matrix and takes the quantum Liouville equation as its starting point. The scattering term is determined accurately to linear order in the impurity density. We consider scattering by charged impurit…
We study semiconductor nanowires coupled to a bilayer of a disordered superconductor and a magnetic insulator, motivated by recent experiments reporting possible Majorana-zero-mode signatures in related architectures. Specifically, we pursue a quasiclassical Usadel equation approach that treats superconductivity in the bilayer self-consistently in the presence of spin-orbit scattering, magnetic-impurity scattering, and Zeeman splitting induced by both the magnetic insulator and a supplemental applied field. Within this framework we explore prospects for engineering topological superconductivit…
We study the different response to an impurity of the two topologically different phases shown by a two dimensional insulator with time reversal symmetry, namely, the Quantum Spin Hall and the normal phase. We consider the case of graphene as a toy model that features the two phases driven, respectively, by intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and inversion symmetry breaking. We find that strictly normalizable in-gap impurity states only occur in the Quantum Spin Hall phase and carry dissipationless current whose quirality is determined by the spin and pseudospin of the residing electron. Our results…
Formation of localized impurity levels within the band gap in bigraphene under applied electric field is considered and the conditions for their collectivization at finite impurity concentration are established. It is shown that a qualitative restructuring of quasiparticle spectrum within the initial band gap and then specific metal-insulator phase transitions are possible for such disordered system and can be effectively controlled by variation of the electric field bias at given impurity perturbation potential and concentration. Since these effects can be expected at low impurity concentrati…
