We identify the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling as the source of the dominant spin-relaxation mechanism in the impurity band of doped semiconductors. The Dresselhaus-type (i.e. allowed by bulk-inversion asymmetry) hopping terms are derived and incorporated into a tight-binding model of impurity sites, and they are shown to unexpectedly dominate the spin relaxation, leading to spin-relaxation times in good agreement with experimental values. This conclusion is drawn from two complementary approaches employed to extract the spin-relaxation time from the effective Hamiltonian: an analytical diffusive-evolution calculation and a numerical finite-size scaling.
We propose a Chern insulator in a two-dimensional electron system with Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, ferromagnetism, and spin-dependent effective mass. The analytically-obtained topological phase diagrams show the topological phase transitions induced by tuning the magnetization orientation with the Chern number varying between $1,0,-1$. The magnetization orientation tuning shown here is a more practical way of triggering the topological phase transitions than manipulating the exchange coupling that is no longer tunable after the fabrication of the system. The analytic results are confirmed…
Polarization-sensitive devices rely on meta-materials to exhibit varying degrees of absorption of light of a given handedness. The chiral surface states of a topological insulator(TI) selectively absorb right and left circularly polarized light in the vicinity of the Dirac cone reaching its maximum of unity at the $ Γ$ point. In this letter, we demonstrate that a band gap open TI with C$_{2v}$ symmetry which is represented through a combination of Rashba and Dresselhaus Hamiltonians alters the preferential absorption of left and right circularly polarized light allowing a smooth variation of t…
We have investigated the nature of surface states in the Bi2Te3 family of three-dimensional topological insulators using first-principles calculations as well as model Hamiltonians. When the surface Dirac cone is warped due to Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in rhombohedral structures, the spin acquires a finite out-of-plane component. We predict a novel in-plane spin-texture of the warped surface Dirac cone with spins not perpendicular to the electron momentum. Our k.p model calculation reveals that this novel in-plane spin-texture requires high order Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling terms.
We theoretically consider spin pumping in a junction between a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) and a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in which the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions coexist. Using second-order perturbation theory, we derive an increase in linewidth in the case of an interfacial exchange coupling in a ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiment. We clarify how the enhancement of Gilbert damping depends on the resonant frequency and spin orientation of the FI. We show that this setup of an FMR experiment can provide information on the spin texture of 2DEG at the Fermi s…
In this work we analytically investigate the longitudinal optical conductivity of the C$_{2v}$ symmetric topological insulator. The conductivity expressions at $ T = 0 $ are derived using the Kubo formula and expressed as a function of the ratio of the Dresselhaus and Rashba parameters that characterize the low-energy Hamiltonian. We find that the longitudinal inter-band conductivity vanishes when Dresselhaus and Rashba parameters are equal in strength, also called the persistent spin helix state. The calculations are extended to obtain the frequency-dependent real and imaginary components of …
Tunneling experiment is a key technique for detecting Majorana fermion in solid state systems. We use Keldysh non-equilibrium Green function method to study multi-lead tunneling in superconducting nanowire with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. A zero-bias \textit{dc} conductance peak appears in our setup which signifies the existence of Majorana fermion and is in accordance with previous experimental results on InSb nanowire. Interestingly, due to the exotic property of Majorana fermion, there exists a hole transmission channel which makes the currents asymmetric at the left and ri…
We propose a model of three-dimensional topological insulators consisting of weakly coupled electron- and hole-gas layers with Rashba spin-orbit interaction stacked along a given axis. We show that in the presence of strong electron-electron interactions the system realizes a fractional strong topological insulator, where the rotational symmetry and condensation energy arguments still allow us to treat the problem as quasi-one-dimensional with bosonization techniques. We also show that if Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction terms are equally strong, by doping the system with magnetic…
The phenomenon of mesoscopic Spin-Hall effect reveals in a nonequilibrium spin accumulation (driven by electric current) at the edges of a ballistic conductor or, more generally, in the regions with varying electron density. In this paper we review our recent results on spin accumulation in ballistic two-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures with Rashba/Dresselhaus spin orbit interactions, and extend the method developed previously to predict the existince of spin-Hall effect on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. The major difference of the new Spin-Hall effect is it…
The scaling physics of quantum Hall transport in optimized topological insulators with a plateau precision of ~1/1000 e2/h is considered. Two exponential scaling regimes are observed in temperature-dependent transport dissipation, one of which accords with thermal activation behavior with a gap of 2.8 meV (> 20 K), the other being attributed to variable range hopping (1-20 K). Magnetic field-driven plateau-to-plateau transition gives scaling relations of (dR$_{xy}$/dB)$^{max}$ \propto T$^{-κ}$ and \DeltaB$^{-1}$ \propto T$^{-κ}$ with a consistent exponent of κ~ 0.2, which is half the universal…
Spin current plays a central role in spintronics. In particular, finding more efficient ways to generate spin current has been an important issue and studied actively. For example, representative methods of spin current generation include spin polarized current injections from ferromagnetic metals, spin Hall effect, and spin battery. Here we theoretically propose a new mechanism of spin current generation based on nonlinear phenomena. By using Boltzmann transport theory, we show that a simple application of the electric field $\bf{E}$ induces spin current proportional to $\bf{E^2}$ in noncentr…
Heterostructures utilizing topological insulators exhibit a remarkable spin-torque efficiency. However, the exact origin of the strong torque, in particular whether it stems from the spin-momentum locking of the topological surface states or rather from spin-Hall physics of the topological-insulator bulk remains unclear. Here, we explore a mechanism of spin-torque generation purely based on the topological surface states. We consider topological-insulator-based bilayers involving ferromagnetic metal (TI/FM) and magnetically doped topological insulators (TI/mdTI), respectively. By ascribing the…
We show that H-phase transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) monolayers such as MoS$_2$ and WSe$_2$, are orbital Hall insulators. They present very large orbital Hall conductivity plateaus in their semiconducting gap, where the spin Hall conductivity vanishes. Our results open the possibility of using TMDs for orbital current injection and orbital torque transfers that surpass their spin-counterparts in spin-orbitronics devices. The orbital Hall effect (OHE) in TMD monolayers occurs even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. It can be linked to exotic momentum-space Dresselhaus-like orbital t…
We investigated the spin coherence of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases confined in multilayer GaAs quantum wells. The dynamics of the spin polarization was optically studied using pump-probe techniques: time-resolved Kerr rotation and resonant spin amplification. For double and triple quantum wells doped beyond the metal-to-insulator transition, the spin-orbit interaction was tailored by the sample parameters of structural symmetry (Rashba constant), width and electron density (Dresselhaus linear and cubic constants) which allows us to attain long dephasing times in the nanoseconds…
We show that extended self-similarity, a scaling phenomenon firstly observed in classical turbulent flows, holds for a two-dimensional metal-insulator transition that belongs to the universality class of random Dirac fermions. Deviations from multifractality, which in turbulence are due to the dominance of diffusive processes at small scales, appear in the condensed matter context as a large scale, finite size effect related to the imposition of an infra-red cutoff in the field theory formulation. We propose a phenomenological interpretation of extended self-similarity in the metal-insulator t…
The Dirac surface states of topological insulators offer a unique possibility for creating spin polarized charge currents due to the spin-momentum locking. Here we demonstrate that the control over the bulk and surface contribution is crucial to maximize the charge-to-spin conversion efficiency. We observe an enhancement of the spin signal due to surface-dominated spin polarization while freezing out the bulk conductivity in semiconducting Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 below 100K. Detailed measurements up to room temperature exhibit a strong reduction of the magnetoresistance signal between 2 and 100K,…
The spin-relaxation time for electrons in the impurity band of semiconductors with wurtzite crystal structure is determined. The effective Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction Hamiltonian is taken as the source of the spin relaxation at low temperature and for doping densities corresponding to the metallic side of the metal-insulator transition. The spin-flip hopping matrix elements between impurity states are calculated and used to set up a tight-binding Hamiltonian that incorporates the symmetries of wurtzite semiconductors. The spin-relaxation time is obtained from a semiclassical model of sp…
A combination of spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interaction gives rise to a new type of collective spin modes, which correspond to oscillations of magnetization even in the absence of the external magnetic field. We review recent progress in theoretical understanding and experimental observation of such modes, focusing on three examples of real-life systems: a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and/or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, graphene with proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling, and the Dirac state on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. This paper …
We measure spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in a unique model system of all-epitaxial ferrite/Pt bilayers to gain insights into charge-spin interconversion in Pt. With negligible electronic conduction in the insulating ferrite, the crystalline Pt film acts as the sole source of charge-to-spin conversion. A small field-like SOT independent of Pt thickness suggests a weak Rashba-Edelstein effect at the ferrite/Pt interface. By contrast, we observe a sizable damping-like SOT that depends on the Pt thickness, from which we deduce the dominance of an extrinsic spin-Hall effect (skew scattering) and Dyakon…
The spin orbit interaction plays a crucial role in diverse fields of condensed matter, including the investigation of Majorana fermions, topological insulators, quantum information and spintronics. In III V zinc blende semiconductor heterostructures, two types of spin orbit interaction, Rashba and Dresselhaus act on the electron spin as effective magnetic fields with different directions. They are characterized by coefficients alpha and beta, respectively. When alpha is equal to beta, the so called persistent spin helix symmetry is realized. In this condition, invariance with respect to spin r…
We theoretically show that the Kitaev interaction generates a novel class of spin texture in the excitation spectrum of the antiferromagnetic insulator found in the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ model. In conducting electronic systems, there is a series of vortex type of spin texture along the Fermi surface induced by Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. Such spin textures are rarely found in magnetic insulators, since there had been no systematic ways to control the kinetics of its quasi-particle called magnon using a magnetic field or spacially asymmetric exchange couplings. Here, we propose …
Motivated by emergent $SU(2)$ symmetry in the spin orbit coupled system, we study the spin helix driven insulating phase in two dimensional lattice. When both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin orbit couplings are present, the perfect Fermi surface nesting occurs at a special condition depending on the lattice geometry. In this case, the energies of spin up at any wave vector $\vec{k}$ are equivalent to the ones of spin down at $\vec{k}\!+\!\vec{Q}$ with so-called the \textit{shifting wave vector} $\vec{Q}$. Thus, the system stabilizes magnetic insulator with spiral like magnetic ordering even in the…
The small spin-orbit interaction of carbon atoms in graphene promises a long spin diffusion length and potential to create a spin field-effect transistor. However, for this reason, graphene was largely overlooked as a possible spin-charge conversion material. We report electric gate tuning of the spin-charge conversion voltage signal in a single-layer graphene. Using spin pumping from yttrium iron garnet ferrimagnetic insulator and ionic liquid top gate we determined that the inverse spin Hall effect is the dominant spin-charge conversion mechanism in a single-layer graphene. From the gate dep…
Half-metals are a class of materials that are metallic only for one spin direction, and are essential for spintronics applications where one needs to read, write, store and transfer spin-data. This spin sensitivity appears to restrict them to be magnetic, and the known examples indeed are. The fabrication of real spintronic devices from such materials is often hampered, however, by stray magnetic fields, domain walls, short spin coherence times, scattering on magnetic atoms or magnetically active interfaces, and other characteristics that come along with the magnetism. The surfaces of topologi…
