Quantum-mechanical molecular-dynamics simulations are carried out to explore possible precursor states of nano-polycrystalline diamond, a novel ultra-hard material produced directly from graphite. Large-scale simulation with 10^5 atoms is realized by using the ' order-N' simulation code 'ELSES' (http://www.elses.jp). The simulation starts with a diamond structure that contains initial structural defects and results in a mixture of graphite(sp^2)-like and diamond(sp^3)-like regions as nano-meter-scale domains. We speculate that the domains are metastable and are possible candidates of the precursor structures.
The letter introduces a diagram that rationalizes tunneling atomic force microscopy (TUNA) observations of electron emission from polycrystalline diamonds as described in recent publications. The direct observations of electron emission from grain boundary sites by TUNA could indeed be evidence of electrons originating from grain boundaries under external electric fields. At the same time, from the diagram it follows that TUNA and field emission schemes are complimentary rather than equivalent for results interpretation. It is further proposed that TUNA could provide better insights into emiss…
Quantum information processing and integrated nanophotonics require robust generation of single photon emitters on demand. In this work we demonstrate that diamond films grown by microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition on a silicon substrate host bright, narrowband single photon emitters in the visible to near infrared spectral range. The emitters possess fast lifetime, absolute photostability, and exhibit full polarization at excitation and emission. Pulsed and continuous laser excitations confirm their quantum behaviour at room temperature, while low temperature spectroscopy is done to i…
Polycrystalline diamond films with systematic change in microstructure that varies from microcrystalline to nanocrystalline structure are synthesized on Si by hot filament chemical vapor deposition. The morphology and structural properties of the grown diamond films are analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The average roughness and grain size of the diamond films decrease with increase in CH4 to H2 ratio from 0.5 to 3 %. Also, structural disorder in these diamond films increases with decreas…
We report on wide-field optically detected magnetic resonance imaging of nitrogen-vacancy centers (NVs) in type IIa polycrystalline diamond. These studies reveal a heterogeneous crystalline environment that produces a varied density of NV centers, including preferential orientation within some individual crystal grains, but preserves long spin coherence times. Using the native NVs as nanoscale sensors, we introduce a 3-dimensional strain imaging technique with high sensitivity ( $< 10^{-5}$ Hz$^{-1/2}$) and diffraction-limited resolution across a wide field of view.
The surface topography of diamond coatings strongly affects surface properties such as adhesion, friction, wear, and biocompatibility. However, the understanding of multi-scale topography, and its effect on properties, has been hindered by conventional measurement methods, which capture only a single length scale. Here, four different polycrystalline diamond coatings are characterized using transmission electron microscopy to assess the roughness down to the sub-nanometer scale. Then these measurements are combined, using the power spectral density (PSD), with conventional methods (stylus prof…
Dielectric resonators are key components for many microwave and millimetre wave applications, including high-Q filters and frequency-determining elements for precision frequency synthesis. These often depend on the quality of the dielectric material. The commonly used material for building the best cryogenic microwave oscillators is sapphire. However sapphire is becoming a limiting factor for higher frequencies design. It is then important to find new candidates that can fulfil the requirements for millimetre wave low noise oscillators at room and cryogenic temperatures. These clocks are used …
In this paper, we describe the modification of Nanoscale Impedance Microscopy (NIM), namely, a combination of contact-mode atomic force microscopy with local impedance measurements. The postulated approach is based on the application of multifrequency voltage perturbation instead of standard frequency-by-frequency analysis, which among others offers more time-efficient and accurate determination of the resultant impedance spectra with high spatial resolution. Based on the impedance spectra analysis with an appropriate electric equivalent circuit, it was possible to map surface resistance and c…
This study investigates the effect of ZrB$_2$ additions on the microstructure, thermal stability, and thermo-mechanical wear behaviour of polycrystalline diamond. Following high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) sintering, the ZrB$_2$-PCD material showed a full conversion of the binder phase to cobalt-boride (Co2B and Co$_{23}$B$_6$) phases. In-situ PXRD and TEM vacuum annealing experiments observed that the onset of bulk graphitisation occurred above $1000^{\circ}C$ for the ZrB$_2$-PCD material, compared to $850^{\circ}C$ for the STD-PCD material. The ZrB$_2$-PCD tools showed excellent thermo-…
The chemical vapor deposition of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) films is typically done on substrates seeded with diamond nanoparticles. Specular laser reflectance and a continuous film model have been used to monitor the thickness of these films during their deposition. However, most seeds are isolated during the early stages of the deposition, which questions the utility of applying such a continuous film model for monitoring deposition before film formation. In this work, we present a model based on the Rayleigh theory of scattering for laser reflectance at substrates with growing nanodiamon…
Specimen- and grain-size effects on nanoscale plastic deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of polycrystalline yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ) nanopillars are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Through uniaxial compression of YSTZ columnar nanopillars, intergranular and transgranular deformation mechanisms are investigated. Cooperative intergranular deformations including grain boundary sliding and migration, grain rotation, and amorphous phase formation at grain boundaries are revealed. Results also reveal formation of partial dislocations, which act as splitte…
We have developed an effective model to investigate the energetic stability of hydrogenated group-IV nanostructures, followed by validations from first-principles calculations. It is found that the Hamiltonian of X$_{m}$H$_{n}$ (X=C, Si, Ge and Sn) can be expressed analytically by a linear combination of the atom numbers ($m$, $n$), indicating a dominating contribution of X$-$X and X$-$H local interactions. As a result, we explain the stable nanostructures observed experimentally, and provide a reliable and efficient technique of searching the magic structures of diamond nanocrystals(Dia-NCs) …
Time-domain Brillouin scattering technique, also known as picosecond ultrasonic interferometry, which provides opportunity to monitor propagation of nanometers to sub-micrometers length coherent acoustic pulses in the samples of sub-micrometers to tens of micrometers dimensions, was applied to depth-profiling of polycrystalline aggregate of ice compressed in a diamond anvil cell to Megabar pressures. The technique allowed examination of characteristic dimensions of elastic inhomogeneities and texturing of polycrystalline ice in the direction normal to the diamond anvil surfaces with sub-microm…
We report a technique for transferring large areas of the CVD-grown, few-layer MoS2 from the original substrate to another arbitrary substrate and onto holey substrates, in order to obtain free-standing structures. The method consists of a polymer- and residue-free, surface-tension-assisted wet transfer, in which we take advantage of the hydrophobic properties of the MoS2. The methods yields better quality transferred layers, with fewer cracks and defects, and less contamination than the widely used PMMA-mediated transfer and allows fabrication of few-layer, fee-standing structures with diamet…
Engineering nanostructures from the bottom up enables the creation of carefully engineered complex structures that are not accessible via top down fabrication techniques, in particular, complex periodic structures for applications in photonics and sensing. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a bottom up approach that can be adopted and utilized to controllably build diamond nanostructures. A realization of periodic structures and optical wave-guiding is achieved by growing nanoscale single crystal diamond through a defined pattern.
In this paper theoretical and statistical/experimental criteria for determining the nanoscale strength of materials are proposed. In particular, quantized criteria in fracture mechanics, dynamic fracture mechanics and fatigue, as well as an experimental indirect observation of the nanoscale strength, are proposed. The increasing of the dynamic resistance and the role of a fractal crack surface formation are also rationalized. The analysis shows that materials can be sensitive to flaws also at nanoscale (as demonstrated for carbon nanotubes), in contrast to the conclusion of a recently publishe…
$La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ samples were prepared in nano- and polycrystalline forms by sol-gel and solid state reaction methods, respectively, and structurally characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties determined by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements are discussed. The magnetocaloric effect in this nanocrystalline manganite is spread over a broader temperature interval than in the polycrystalline case. The relative cooling power of the poly- and nanocrystalline manganites is used to evaluate a possible application for magnetic cooling below room temp…
This paper describes the experimental studies of the formation of nano-diamonds during detonation of TNT/RDX 50/50 mixture with small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) method at a synchrotron radiation beam on VEPP-3 accelerator. A new experimental method with introduction of nano-diamonds into the explosive has been applied. Inclusion of the diamonds obtained after detonation into the TNT and RDX explosives allows modelling of the case of instant creation of nano-diamonds during detonation.
We show the dielectrophoretic actuation of single-crystal diamond nanomechanical devices. Gradient radio-frequency electromagnetic forces are used to achieve actuation of both cantilever and doubly clamped beam structures, with operation frequencies ranging from a few MHz to ~50MHz. Frequency tuning and parametric actuation are also studied.
A high-current annealing technique is used to fabricate nanogaps and hybrid diamond/graphite structures in boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond films. Nanometer-sized gaps down to 1 nm are produced using a feedback-controlled current annealing procedure. The nanogaps are characterized using scanning electron microscopy and electronic transport measurements. The structural changes produced by the elevated temperature, achieved by Joule heating during current annealing, are characterized using Raman spectroscopy. The formation of hybridized diamond/graphite structure is observed at the point of m…
Long-term observations of photoluminescence at the single-molecule level were until recently very diffcult, due to the photobleaching of organic ?uorophore molecules. Although inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals can overcome this diffculty showing very low photobleaching yield, they suffer from photoblinking. A new marker has been recently introduced, relying on diamond nanoparticles containing photoluminescent color centers. In this work we compare the photoluminescence of single quantum dots (QDs) to the one of nanodiamonds containing a single-color center. Contrary to other markers, photol…
Diamond provides superior optical and mechanical material properties, making it a prime candidate for the realization of integrated optomechanical circuits. Because diamond sub- strates have matured in size, efficient nanostructuring methods can be used to realize full-scale integrated devices. Here we review optical and mechanical resonators fab- ricated from polycrystalline as well as single crystalline diamond. We present relevant material properties with respect to implementing optomechanical devices and compare them with other material systems. We give an overview of diamond integrated op…
Using microwave-assisted plasma chemical vapour deposition (CVD) a layer of Nitrogen doped ultra-nano-crystalline diamond (N-UNCD) is deposited on top of a non-conducting diamond layer, which itself is situated on a Silicon wafer. This structure is then shaped into Hall-bar devices of various dimensions using optical lithography and dry-etching techniques. The devices' electrical properties are investigated at various temperatures using a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator.
We introduce a process for the fabrication of high quality, spatially isolated nano-diamonds on iridium via microwave plasma assisted CVD-growth. We perform spectroscopy of single silicon-vacancy (SiV)-centres produced during the growth of the nano-diamonds. The colour centres exhibit extraordinary narrow zero-phonon-lines down to 0.7 nm at room temperature. Single photon count rates up to 4.8 Mcps at saturation make these SiV-centres the brightest diamond based single photon sources to date. We measure for the first time the fine structure of a single SiV-centre thus confirming the atomic com…
The magnetic Ln$^{3+}$ ions in the fergusonite and scheelite crystal structures form a distorted or stretched diamond lattice which is predicted to host exotic magnetic ground states. In this study, polycrystalline samples of the fergusonite orthotantalates $M$-LnTaO$_4$ (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) are synthesized and then characterized using powder diffraction and bulk magnetometry and heat capacity. TbTaO$_4$ orders antiferromagnetically at 2.25 K into a commensurate magnetic cell with $\vec{k}=0$, magnetic space group 14.77 ($P2_1$$'/c$) and Tb moments parallel to the $a$-axis. No…
The burgeoning field of nanophotonics has grown to be a major research area, primarily because of the ability to control and manipulate single quantum systems (emitters) and single photons on demand. For many years studying nanophotonic phenomena was limited to traditional semiconductors (including silicon and GaAs) and experiments were carried out predominantly at cryogenic temperatures. In the last decade, however, diamond has emerged as a new contender to study photonic phenomena at the nanoscale. Offering plethora of quantum emitters that are optically active at room temperature and ambien…
We report actuation and detection of gigahertz-range resonance frequencies in nano-crystalline diamond mechanical resonators. High order transverse vibration modes are measured in coupled-beam resonators exhibiting frequencies up to 1.441 GHz. The cantilever-array design of the resonators translates the gigahertz-range resonant motion of micron-long cantilever elements to the displacement of the central supporting structure. Use of nano-crystalline diamond further increases the frequency compared to single crystal silicon by a factor of three. High clamping losses usually associated with micro…
We present the electrical transport characteristics of a batch of nano-crystalline diamond films of varying nitrogen concentrations and explain the conduction mechanism by the disordered quasi-superlattice model applied to semiconductor heterostructures. Synthesized by the hot filament chemical vapour deposition technique, the degree of structural disorder in the films, confirmed from Raman spectroscopy, is found to be controllable, resulting in the transition of conduction mechanism from localized and activated to the metallic conduction regime. Hence through high field magneto-resistance mea…
Nearly two-dimensional diamond, or diamane, is coveted as ultrathin $sp^3$-carbon film with unique mechanics and electro-optics. The very thinness ($~h$) makes it possible for the surface chemistry, e.g. adsorbed atoms, to shift the bulk phase thermodynamics in favor of diamond, from multilayer graphene. Thermodynamic theory coupled with atomistic first principles computations predicts not only the reduction of required pressure ($p/p_{\infty}>1-h_0/h$), but also the nucleation barriers, definitive for the kinetic feasibility of diamane formation. Moreover, the optimal adsorbent chair-pattern …
We demonstrate a new approach for engineering group IV semiconductor-based quantum photonic structures containing negatively charged silicon-vacancy (SiV$^-$) color centers in diamond as quantum emitters. Hybrid SiC/diamond structures are realized by combining the growth of nanoand micro-diamonds on silicon carbide (3C or 4H polytype) substrates, with the subsequent use of these diamond crystals as a hard mask for pattern transfer. SiV$^-$ color centers are incorporated in diamond during its synthesis from molecular diamond seeds (diamondoids), with no need for ionimplantation or annealing. We…
We demonstrate the fabrication of single-crystalline diamond nanopillars on a (111)-oriented chemical vapor deposited diamond substrate. This crystal orientation offers optimal coupling of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center emission to the nanopillar mode and is thus advantageous over previous approaches. We characterize single native NV centers in these nanopillars and find one of the highest reported saturated fluorescence count rates in single crystalline diamond in excess of 10${}^6$ counts per second. We show that our nano-fabrication procedure conserves the preferential alignment as well as th…
Powered by the mutual developments in instrumentation, materials andtheoretical descriptions, sensing and imaging capabilities of quantum emitters insolids have significantly increased in the past two decades. Quantum emitters insolids, whose properties resemble those of atoms and ions, provide alternative waysto probing natural and artificial nanoscopic systems with minimum disturbance andultimate spatial resolution. Among those emerging quantum emitters, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond is an outstanding example due to its intrinsicproperties at room temperature (highly-lumi…
Quantum sensors based on optically active defects in diamond such as the nitrogen vacancy (NV) centre represent a promising platform for nanoscale sensing and imaging of magnetic, electric, temperature and strain fields. Enhancing the optical interface to such defects is key to improving the measurement sensitivity of these systems. Photonic nanostructures are often employed in the single emitter regime for this purpose, but their applicability to widefield sensing with NV ensembles remains largely unexplored. Here we fabricate and characterize closely-packed arrays of diamond nanopillars, eac…
We investigate native nitrogen (NV) and silicon vacancy (SiV) color centers in commercially available, heteroepitaxial, wafer-sized, mm thick, single-crystal diamond. We observe single, native NV centers with a density of roughly 1 NV per $μm^3$ and moderate coherence time ($T_2 = 5 μs$) embedded in an ensemble of SiV centers. Low-temperature spectroscopy of the SiV zero phonon line fine structure witnesses high crystalline quality of the diamond especially close to the growth surface, consistent with a reduced dislocation density. Using ion implantation and plasma etching, we verify the possi…
In this work we present the fabrication and characterization of superconducting nano-mechanical resonators made from nanocrystalline boron doped diamond (BDD). The oscillators can be driven and read out in their superconducting state and show quality factors as high as 40,000 at a resonance frequency of around 10 MHz. Mechanical damping is studied for magnetic fields up to 3 T where the resonators still show superconducting properties. Due to their simple fabrication procedure, the devices can easily be coupled to other superconducting circuits and their performance is comparable with state-of…
We demonstrate the controlled preparation of heteroepitaxial diamond nano- and microstructures on silicon wafer based iridium films as hosts for single color centers. Our approach uses electron beam lithography followed by reactive ion etching to pattern the carbon layer formed by bias enhanced nucleation on the iridium surface. In the subsequent chemical vapor deposition process, the patterned areas evolve into regular arrays of (001) oriented diamond nano-islands with diameters of <500nm and a height of approx. 60 nm. In the islands, we identify single SiV color centers with narrow zero phon…
