The letter introduces a diagram that rationalizes tunneling atomic force microscopy (TUNA) observations of electron emission from polycrystalline diamonds as described in recent publications. The direct observations of electron emission from grain boundary sites by TUNA could indeed be evidence of electrons originating from grain boundaries under external electric fields. At the same time, from the diagram it follows that TUNA and field emission schemes are complimentary rather than equivalent for results interpretation. It is further proposed that TUNA could provide better insights into emission mechanisms by measuring the detailed structure of the potential barrier on the surface of polycrystalline diamonds.
Quantum-mechanical molecular-dynamics simulations are carried out to explore possible precursor states of nano-polycrystalline diamond, a novel ultra-hard material produced directly from graphite. Large-scale simulation with 10^5 atoms is realized by using the ' order-N' simulation code 'ELSES' (http://www.elses.jp). The simulation starts with a diamond structure that contains initial structural defects and results in a mixture of graphite(sp^2)-like and diamond(sp^3)-like regions as nano-meter-scale domains. We speculate that the domains are metastable and are possible candidates of the precu…
Quantum information processing and integrated nanophotonics require robust generation of single photon emitters on demand. In this work we demonstrate that diamond films grown by microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition on a silicon substrate host bright, narrowband single photon emitters in the visible to near infrared spectral range. The emitters possess fast lifetime, absolute photostability, and exhibit full polarization at excitation and emission. Pulsed and continuous laser excitations confirm their quantum behaviour at room temperature, while low temperature spectroscopy is done to i…
Polycrystalline diamond films with systematic change in microstructure that varies from microcrystalline to nanocrystalline structure are synthesized on Si by hot filament chemical vapor deposition. The morphology and structural properties of the grown diamond films are analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The average roughness and grain size of the diamond films decrease with increase in CH4 to H2 ratio from 0.5 to 3 %. Also, structural disorder in these diamond films increases with decreas…
We report on wide-field optically detected magnetic resonance imaging of nitrogen-vacancy centers (NVs) in type IIa polycrystalline diamond. These studies reveal a heterogeneous crystalline environment that produces a varied density of NV centers, including preferential orientation within some individual crystal grains, but preserves long spin coherence times. Using the native NVs as nanoscale sensors, we introduce a 3-dimensional strain imaging technique with high sensitivity ( $< 10^{-5}$ Hz$^{-1/2}$) and diffraction-limited resolution across a wide field of view.
The surface topography of diamond coatings strongly affects surface properties such as adhesion, friction, wear, and biocompatibility. However, the understanding of multi-scale topography, and its effect on properties, has been hindered by conventional measurement methods, which capture only a single length scale. Here, four different polycrystalline diamond coatings are characterized using transmission electron microscopy to assess the roughness down to the sub-nanometer scale. Then these measurements are combined, using the power spectral density (PSD), with conventional methods (stylus prof…
Dielectric resonators are key components for many microwave and millimetre wave applications, including high-Q filters and frequency-determining elements for precision frequency synthesis. These often depend on the quality of the dielectric material. The commonly used material for building the best cryogenic microwave oscillators is sapphire. However sapphire is becoming a limiting factor for higher frequencies design. It is then important to find new candidates that can fulfil the requirements for millimetre wave low noise oscillators at room and cryogenic temperatures. These clocks are used …
In this paper, we describe the modification of Nanoscale Impedance Microscopy (NIM), namely, a combination of contact-mode atomic force microscopy with local impedance measurements. The postulated approach is based on the application of multifrequency voltage perturbation instead of standard frequency-by-frequency analysis, which among others offers more time-efficient and accurate determination of the resultant impedance spectra with high spatial resolution. Based on the impedance spectra analysis with an appropriate electric equivalent circuit, it was possible to map surface resistance and c…
This study investigates the effect of ZrB$_2$ additions on the microstructure, thermal stability, and thermo-mechanical wear behaviour of polycrystalline diamond. Following high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) sintering, the ZrB$_2$-PCD material showed a full conversion of the binder phase to cobalt-boride (Co2B and Co$_{23}$B$_6$) phases. In-situ PXRD and TEM vacuum annealing experiments observed that the onset of bulk graphitisation occurred above $1000^{\circ}C$ for the ZrB$_2$-PCD material, compared to $850^{\circ}C$ for the STD-PCD material. The ZrB$_2$-PCD tools showed excellent thermo-…

The chemical vapor deposition of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) films is typically done on substrates seeded with diamond nanoparticles. Specular laser reflectance and a continuous film model have been used to monitor the thickness of these films during their deposition. However, most seeds are isolated during the early stages of the deposition, which questions the utility of applying such a continuous film model for monitoring deposition before film formation. In this work, we present a model based on the Rayleigh theory of scattering for laser reflectance at substrates with growing nanodiamon…
We are proposing a novel fabrication method for single crystal diamond scanning probes, exploiting the method of Faraday cage angled etching (FCAE). Electron-beam lithography (EBL) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching as state-of-the-art method is often limiting the achievable diamond structure geometries in aspect ratio and complexity. This poses challenges, e.g., for realizing nitrogen vacancy (NV) centre magnetometry scanning probes. Combining a planar design with FCAE offers several advantages over the established fabrication technology of nano-opto-mechanical diamond devices. Here…
We have studied the graphene/gold interface by means of density functional theory (DFT) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Weak interaction between graphene and the underlying gold surface leaves unperturbed Dirac cones in the band-structure, but they can be shifted with respect to the Fermi level of the whole system, which results in effective doping of graphene. DFT calculations revealed that the interface is extremely sensitive to the adsorption distance and to the structure of metal's surface, in particular strong variation in doping can be attributed to the specific rearrangements…
Time-domain Brillouin scattering technique, also known as picosecond ultrasonic interferometry, which provides opportunity to monitor propagation of nanometers to sub-micrometers length coherent acoustic pulses in the samples of sub-micrometers to tens of micrometers dimensions, was applied to depth-profiling of polycrystalline aggregate of ice compressed in a diamond anvil cell to Megabar pressures. The technique allowed examination of characteristic dimensions of elastic inhomogeneities and texturing of polycrystalline ice in the direction normal to the diamond anvil surfaces with sub-microm…
Scanning magnetometry with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond has emerged as a powerful microscopy for studying weak stray field patterns with nanometer resolution. Due to the internal crystal anisotropy of the spin defect, however, external bias fields -- critical for the study of magnetic materials -- must be applied along specific spatial directions. In particular, the most common diamond probes made from {100}-cut diamond only support fields at an angle of $θ= 55^\circ$ from the surface normal. In this paper, we report fabrication of scanning diamond probes from {110}-cut diamond whe…
Ultra-nanocrystalline diamond is a polycrystalline material, having crystalline diamond grains of sizes in the nanometer regime. We study the structure and mechanical properties of this material as a function of the average grain size, employing atomistic simulations. From the calculated elastic constants and the estimated hardness, we observe softening of the material as the size of its grains decreases. We attribute the observed softening to the enhanced fraction of interfacial atoms as the average grain size becomes smaller. We provide a fitting formula for the scaling of the cohesive energ…
Digital image correlation of laser-ablated platinum nanoparticles on the surface of a polycrystalline metal (nickel-based superalloy Rene 88DT) was used to obtain the local strain behavior from an in situ scanning electron microscope tensile experiment at room temperature. By fusing this information with crystallographic orientations from EBSD, a subsequent analysis shows that the average maximum shear strain tends to increase with increasing Schmid factor. Additionally, the range of the extreme values for the maximum shear strain also increases closer to the grain boundary, signifying that gr…
The study of nanoscale chiral magnetic order in polycrystalline materials with a strong Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is interesting for the observation of magnetic phenomena at grain boundaries and interfaces. One such material is sputter-deposited B20 FeGe on Si, which has been actively investigated as the basis for low-power, high-density magnetic memory technology in a scalable material platform. Although conventional Lorentz electron microscopy provides the requisite spatial resolution to probe chiral magnetic textures in single-crystal FeGe, probing the magnetism of sputtered B2…
Understanding nano- and micro-scale crystal strain in CVD diamond is crucial to the advancement of diamond quantum technologies. In particular, the presence of such strain and its characterization present a challenge to diamond-based quantum sensing and information applications -- as well as for future dark matter detectors where directional information of incoming particles is encoded in crystal strain. Here, we exploit nanofocused scanning X-ray diffraction microscopy to quantitatively measure crystal deformation from defects in diamond with high spatial and strain resolution. Combining info…
The origins of an ultrahigh dielectric constant in polycrystalline CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) was studied using the combination of impedance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Impedance spectra indicate that the transport properties in the 0.1 Hz .. 1 MHz frequency range are dominated by a single parallel resistive-capacitive (RC) element with a characteristic relaxation frequency of 16 Hz. Dc potential distributions measurements by SPM illustrate that significant potential drops occur at the grain boundaries, which thus can be unambiguously identified as the domin…
The negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy center (NV) in diamond forms a versatile system for quantum sensing applications. Combining the advantageous properties of this atomic-sized defect with scanning probe techniques such as atomic force microscopy (AFM) enables nanoscale imaging of e.g. magnetic fields. To form a scanning probe device, we place single NVs shallowly (i.e. < 20 nm) below the top facet of a diamond nanopillar, which is located on a thin diamond platform of typically below 1 μm thickness. This device can be attached to an AFM head, forming an excellent scanning probe tip. Furth…
We present atomistic simulations for the mechanical response of ultra nanocrystalline diamond, a polycrystalline form of diamond with grain diameters of the order of a few nm. We consider fully three-dimensional model structures, having several grains of random sizes and orientations, and employ state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations. We calculate structural properties, elastic constants and the hardness of the material; our results compare well with experimental observations for this material. Moreover, we verify that this material becomes softer at small grain sizes, in analogy to the obse…
We report a direct current transport study of the local intergrain connections in a polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 (Sm1111) bulk, for which we earlier estimated significant intergranular critical current density Jc. Our combined low temperature laser scanning microscopy (LTLSM) and scanning electron microscopy observations revealed only few grain-to-grain transport current paths, most of which switched off when a magnetic field was applied. These regions typically occur where current crosses Fe-As, which is a normal-metal wetting-phase that surrounds Sm1111 grains, producing a dense array of supe…
We report direct imaging of boundary magnetization associated with antiferromagnetic domains in magnetoelectric epitaxial Cr2O3 thin films using diamond nitrogen vacancy microscopy. We found a correlation between magnetic domain size and structural grain size which we associate with the domain formation process. We performed field cooling, i.e., cooling from above to below the Néel temperature in the presence of magnetic field, which resulted in the selection of one of the two otherwise degenerate 180 degree domains. Lifting of such a degeneracy is achievable with a magnetic field alone due to…
A new method for estimation of intragranular strain fields in polycrystalline materials based on scanning three-dimensional X-ray diffraction data (scanning-3DXRD) is presented and evaluated. Given an apriori known anisotropic compliance, the regression method enforces the balance of linear and angular momentum in the linear elastic strain field reconstruction. By using a Gaussian Process (GP), the presented method can yield a spatial estimate of the uncertainty of the reconstructed strain field. Furthermore, constraints on spatial smoothness can be optimised with respect to measurements throu…
Different methods of texturing polycrystalline materials are developed over years to use/probe anisotropic material properties with relative ease, where complicated and expensive single crystal growth processes could be avoided. In this paper, particle morphology assisted texturing in multiferroic MnWO$_4$ has been discussed. Detailed powder x-ray diffraction vis-a-vis scanning electron microscopic studies on differently annealed and processed samples have been employed to probe the giant texturing effect in powdered MnWO$_4$. A quantitative measure of the texturing has been carried out by mea…
Diamond has recently attracted considerable attention as a promising platform for quantum technologies, photonics and high resolution sensing applications. Here we demonstrate a chemical approach that enables the fabrication of functional diamond structures using gas-mediated electron induced etching. The method achieves chemical etching at room temperature through the dissociation of surface-adsorbed H2O molecules by electron irradiation in a water vapor environment. High throughput, parallel processing is possible by electron flood exposure and the use of an etch mask, while single step, mas…
Single-photon sources are a fundamental element for developing quantum technologies, and sources based on colour centres in diamonds are among the most promising candidates. The well-known NV centres are characterized by several limitations, thus few other defects have recently been considered. In the present work, we characterize in detail native efficient single colour centres emitting in the near infra-red in both standard IIa single-crystal and electronic-grade polycrystalline commercial CVD diamond samples. In the former case, a high-temperature annealing process in vacuum is necessary to…
We investigate the hot cracking susceptibility and creep resistance of three versions of a nickel-based superalloy with different contents of boron, carbon and zirconium fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. Crack-free and creep resistant components are achieved for alloys with boron, carbon and no zirconium. We then rationalize this result by evaluating how boron, carbon and zirconium are distributed at grain boundaries in the as-built and heat-treated microstructures of an alloy containing all these elements. Observations are conducted by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and a…
To investigate the effects of CdCl$_2$ treatment on the local electronic properties of polycrystalline CdTe films, we conducted a photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) study of polished surfaces of CdTe films in superstrate configuration, with and without CdCl$_2$ treatment. From photoemission intensity images, we observed the tendency for individual exposed grain interiors to vary in photoemission intensity, regardless of whether or not films received CdCl$_2$ treatment. Additionally, grain boundaries develop contrast in photoemission intensity images different from grain interiors after a…
We report on mask-less, high resolution etching of diamond surfaces, featuring sizes down to 10 nm. We use a scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with water vapor, which was injected by a needle directly onto the sample surface. Using this versatile and low-damage technique, trenches with different depths were etched. Cross sections of each trench were obtained by focused ion beam milling and used to calculate the achieved aspect ratios. The developed technique opens up the possibility of mask- and resist-less patterning of diamond for nano-optical and electronic applications.
Exposure to beams of low energy electrons (2 to 30 keV) in a scanning electron microscope locally induces formation of NV-centers without thermal annealing in diamonds that have been implanted with nitrogen ions. We find that non-thermal, electron beam induced NV-formation is about four times less efficient than thermal annealing. But NV-center formation in a consecutive thermal annealing step (800C) following exposure to low energy electrons increases by a factor of up to 1.8 compared to thermal annealing alone. These observations point to reconstruction of nitrogen-vacancy complexes induced …
Nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond have emerged as highly versatile optical emitters that exhibit room temperature spin properties. These characteristics make NV centers ideal for magnetometry, which plays an important role in chemical and biological sensing applications. The integration of NV magnetometers with microfluidic systems could enable the study of isolated chemical and biological samples in a fluid environment with high spatial resolution. Here we demonstrate a method to perform localized magnetometry with nanometer spatial precision using a single NV center in a microfl…
Thermal conductivity of nanocrystalline and ultra-nanocrystalline films is analyzed with effective medium theory (EMT) models. The existing EMT models use the spherical inclusion approximation. Although this approximation works quite well it is inconsistent, mostly with respect to the maximal packing of 74{\%}, which may be unrealistic for polycrystalline films. To check the consistency of these models we devise an EMT model with arbitrarily shaped inclusions. We pick the EMT model with cubic inclusions and we compare its results with the results of the EMT model with spherical inclusions. It …
We investigate bright fluorescence of nitrogen (NV)- and silicon-vacancy color centers in pyramidal, single crystal diamond tips which are commercially available as atomic force microscope probes. We coherently manipulate NV electronic spin ensembles with $T_2 = 7.7(3)\,μ$s. Color center lifetimes in different tip heights indicate effective refractive index effects and quenching. Using numerical simulations, we verify enhanced photon rates from emitters close to the pyramid apex; a situation promising for scanning probe sensing.
We present a novel technique based on an ensemble of Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond to perform Magnetic Current Imaging (MCI) on an Integrated Circuit (IC). NV centers in diamond allow measuring the three components of the magnetic fields generated by a mA range current in an IC structure over a field of 50 x 200 μm^2 with sub-micron resolution. Vector measurements allow using a more robust algorithm than those used for MCI using Giant Magneto Resistance (GMR) or Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) sensors and it is opening new current reconstruction prospects. Calcul…
Scanning Probe Microscopy is used to study and quantify the nanoscale electric phenomena in the two classes of oxide systems, namely transport at electroactive grain boundaries and surface behavior of ferroelectric materials. Scanning Impedance Microscopy is developed to study the capacitance and local C-V characteristic of the interfaces combining the spatial resolution of traditional SPMs with the precision of conventional electrical measurements. SPM of SrTiO3 grain boundaries in conjunction with variable temperature impedance spectroscopy and I-V measurements allowed to find and theoretica…
Crystal strain variation imposes significant limitations on many quantum sensing and information applications for solid-state defect qubits in diamond. Thus, precision measurement and control of diamond crystal strain is a key challenge. Here, we report diamond strain measurements with a unique set of capabilities, including micron-scale spatial resolution, millimeter-scale field-of-view, and a two order-of-magnitude improvement in volume-normalized sensitivity over previous work [1], reaching $5(2) \times 10^{-8}/\sqrt{\rm{Hz}\cdot\rm{μm}^3}$ (with spin-strain coupling coefficients representi…
The ability to sensitively detect charges under ambient conditions would be a fascinating new tool benefitting a wide range of researchers across disciplines. However, most current techniques are limited to low-temperature methods like single-electron transistors (SET), single-electron electrostatic force microscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy. Here we open up a new quantum metrology technique demonstrating precision electric field measurement using a single nitrogen-vacancy defect centre(NV) spin in diamond. An AC electric field sensitivity reaching ~ 140V/cm/\surd Hz has been achieved…
