We present atomistic simulations for the mechanical response of ultra nanocrystalline diamond, a polycrystalline form of diamond with grain diameters of the order of a few nm. We consider fully three-dimensional model structures, having several grains of random sizes and orientations, and employ state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations. We calculate structural properties, elastic constants and the hardness of the material; our results compare well with experimental observations for this material. Moreover, we verify that this material becomes softer at small grain sizes, in analogy to the observed reversal of the Hall-Petch effect in various nanocrystalline metals. The effect is attributed to the large concentration of grain boundary atoms at smaller grain sizes. Our analysis yields scaling relations for the elastic constants as a function of the average grain size.
Silicene, a 2D analogue of graphene, has spurred a tremendous research interest in the scientific community for its unique properties essential for next generation electronic devices. In this work, for the first time, we present a molecular dynamics (MD) investigation to determine the fracture strength and toughness of nanocrystalline silicene (nc silicene) sheet of varied grain size and pre existing crack length at room temperature. Our results suggest that the transition from an inverse pseudo Hall Petch to a pseudo Hall Petch behavior in nc silicene occurs at a critical grain size of 17.32 …
A nanocrystalline metal's strength increases significantly as its grain size decreases, a phenomenon known as the Hall-Petch relation. Such relation, however, breaks down when the grains become too small. Experimental studies have circumvented this problem in a set of Ni-Mo alloys by stabilizing the grain boundaries (GB). Here, using atomistic simulations with a machine learning-based interatomic potential (ML-IAP), we demonstrate that the inverse Hall-Petch relation can be correctly reproduced due to a change in the dominant deformation mechanism as the grain becomes small in the Ni-Mo polycr…
In recent years it has become possible to study the properties of nanocrystalline metals through atomic-scale simulations of systems with realistic grain sizes. A brief overview of the main results is given, such as the observation of a reverse Hall-Petch effect - a softening of the metal when the grain size is reduced. The limitations of computer simulations are discussed, with a particular focus on the factors that may influence the reliability of this kind of simulations.
The light scattering properties of superconducting (Tc=3.8 K) heavily boron doped nanocrystalline diamond has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy using visible excitations. Fano type interference of the zone-center phonon line and the electronic continuum was identified. Lineshape analysis reveals Fano lineshapes with a significant asymmetry (q=-2). An anomalous wavelength dependence and small value of the Raman scattering amplitude is observed in agreement with previous studies.
Diamond-based photonic devices offer exceptional opportunity to study cavity QED at room temperature. Here we report fabrication and optical characterization of high quality photonic crystal (PC) microcavities based on nanocrystalline diamond. Fundamental modes near the emission wavelength of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) centers (637 nm) with quality factors (Qs) as high as 585 were observed. Three-dimensional Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations were carried out and had excellent agreement with experimental results in the values of the mode frequencies. Polarization m…
Ultra-nanocrystalline diamond is a polycrystalline material, having crystalline diamond grains of sizes in the nanometer regime. We study the structure and mechanical properties of this material as a function of the average grain size, employing atomistic simulations. From the calculated elastic constants and the estimated hardness, we observe softening of the material as the size of its grains decreases. We attribute the observed softening to the enhanced fraction of interfacial atoms as the average grain size becomes smaller. We provide a fitting formula for the scaling of the cohesive energ…
Nanocrystalline metals, i.e. metals in which the grain size is in the nanometer range, have a range of technologically interesting properties including increased hardness and yield strength. We present atomic-scale simulations of the plastic behavior of nanocrystalline copper. The simulations show that the main deformation mode is sliding in the grain boundaries through a large number of uncorrelated events, where a few atoms (or a few tens of atoms) slide with respect to each other. Little dislocation activity is seen in the grain interiors. The localization of the deformation to the grain bo…
This paper presents findings from a study of nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) growth in a microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition (CVD) reactor. NCD films were grown using Ar/H2/CH4 and He/H2/CH4 gas compositions. The resulting films were characterised using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Analysis revealed an estimated grain size of the order of 50 nm, growth rates in the range 0.01 to 0.3 um/h and sp3 and sp2 bonded carbon content consistent with that expected for NCD. The C2 Swan band was probed using cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) to mea…
Hole doping can control the conductivity of diamond either through boron substitution, or carrier accumulation in a field-effect transistor. In this work, we combine the two methods to investigate the insulator-to-metal transition at the surface of nanocrystalline diamond films. The finite boron doping strongly increases the maximum hole density which can be induced electrostatically with respect to intrinsic diamond. The ionic gate pushes the conductivity of the film surface away from the variable-range hopping regime and into the quantum critical regime. However, the combination of the stron…
Herein, we report on the improvement of structural quality and enhancement of photoluminescence (PL) emission for an optimally N doped nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) film. Pure and N doped nanocrystalline diamond films are synthesized on Si by hot filament chemical vapour deposition using NH3:CH4:H2 at different nominal N/C ratios viz. 0, 0.13, 0.35, 0.50 and 0.75 in feedstock. X ray diffraction analysis reveal a systematic initial increase and then a decrease in crystallite size with N/C ratio in feedstock. Further, a monotonic increase in Raman line width and peak position of diamond band ind…
Thermal conductivity of nanocrystalline and ultra-nanocrystalline films is analyzed with effective medium theory (EMT) models. The existing EMT models use the spherical inclusion approximation. Although this approximation works quite well it is inconsistent, mostly with respect to the maximal packing of 74{\%}, which may be unrealistic for polycrystalline films. To check the consistency of these models we devise an EMT model with arbitrarily shaped inclusions. We pick the EMT model with cubic inclusions and we compare its results with the results of the EMT model with spherical inclusions. It …

Atomic defect centers in diamond have been widely exploited in numerous quantum applications like quantum information, sensing, quantum photonics and so on. In this context, there is always a requirement to improve and optimize the preparation procedure to generate the defect centers in controlled fashion, and to explore new defect centers which can have the potential to overcome the current technological challenges. Through this letter we report enhancing the concentration of Ge and Xe vacancy centers in nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) by means of He+ irradiation. We have demonstrated controlle…
A phase slip is a localized disturbance in the coherence of a superconductor allowing an abrupt 2$π$ phase shift. Phase slips are a ubiquitous feature of one-dimensional superconductors and also have an analogue in two-dimensions. Here we present electrical transport measurements on boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond (BNCD) microbridges where, despite their three-dimensional macroscopic geometry, we find clear evidence of phase slippage in both the resistance-temperature and voltage-current characteristics. We attribute this behavior to the unusual microstructure of BNCD. We argue that the co…
The fabrication of various suspended microstructures made from ultra-nanocrystalline diamond was performed without sacrificial layer. Arrays of bridges and cantilevers of various dimensions were successfully fabricated by a well-controlled process. Mechanical characterizations and finite element calculations allowed us to estimate both the Young's modulus as well as the residual stress built in the ultra-nanocrystalline diamond film.
Polycrystalline diamond films with systematic change in microstructure that varies from microcrystalline to nanocrystalline structure are synthesized on Si by hot filament chemical vapor deposition. The morphology and structural properties of the grown diamond films are analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The average roughness and grain size of the diamond films decrease with increase in CH4 to H2 ratio from 0.5 to 3 %. Also, structural disorder in these diamond films increases with decreas…
Low-cost and robust platforms are key for the development of next-generation 3D micro- and nanodevices. To fabricate such platforms, nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) is a highly appealing material due to its biocompatibility, robustness, and mechanical, electrical, electrochemical, and optical properties, while glass substrates with through vias are ideal interposers for 3D integration due to the excellent properties of glass. However, developing devices that are comprised of NCD films and through glass vias (TGVs) has rarely been attempted due to a lack of effective process strategies. In this w…
A theory of flow stress, including the yield strength is proposed for the class of PC materials with equilibrium defect structure (EDS), which is established in the PC material after series of $N_0$ similar treatments of severe plastic deformation at fixed temperature T and characterized by stabilized scalar dislocation density (SDD) and average grain size d. We calculate both the stationary SDD $ρ(b,d,T)$ and suggest a way to calculate $\varepsilon$-evolution of an equilibrium SDD $ρ_{\varepsilon}$ in PC sample under quasy-static loading depending on the average size $d$ of a grain in the ran…
The transformation pathways of carbon at high pressures are of broad interest for synthesis of novel materials and for revealing the Earth's geological history. We have applied large plastic shear on graphite in rotational anvils to form hexagonal and nanocrystalline cubic diamond at extremely low pressures of 0.4 and 0.7 GPa, which are 50 and 100 times lower than the transformation pressures under hydrostatic compression and well below the phase equilibrium. Large shearing accompanied with pressure elevation to 3 GPa also leads to formation of a new orthorhombic diamond phase. Our results dem…
The quantal release of catecholamines from neuroendocrine cells is a key mechanism which has been investigated with a broad range of materials and devices, among which carbon-based materials such as carbon fibers, diamond-like carbon, carbon nanotubes and nanocrystalline diamond. In the present work we demonstrate that a MeV-ion-microbeam lithographic technique can be successfully employed for the fabrication of an all-carbon miniaturized cellular bio-sensor based on graphitic micro-channels embedded in a single-crystal diamond matrix. The device was functionally characterized for the in vitro…
Nanocrystalline metals contain a large fraction of high-energy grain boundaries, which may be considered as glassy phases. Consequently, with decreasing grain size, a crossover in the deformation behaviour of nanocrystals to that of metallic glasses has been proposed. Here, we study this crossover using molecular dynamics simulations on bulk glasses, glass-crystal nanocomposites, and nanocrystals of Cu64Zr36 with varying crystalline volume fractions induced by long-time thermal annealing. We find that the grain boundary phase behaves like a metallic glass under constraint from the abutting cry…

We have studied the internal friction and the relative change in the speed of sound of amorphous diamond-like carbon films prepared by pulsed-laser deposition from 0.3 K to room temperature. Like the most of amorphous solids, the internal friction below 10 K exhibits a temperature independent plateau. The values of the internal friction plateau, however, are slightly below the universal ``glassy range'' where the internal frictions of almost all amorphous solids lie. Similar observations have been made in our earlier studies in the thin films of amorphous silicon and amorphous germanium, and t…
