UCoGe is one of the few compounds showing the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity at ambient pressure. With T_Curie = 3 K and T_SC = 0.6 K it is near a quantum phase transition; the pressure needed to suppress the magnetism is slightly higher than 1 GPa. We report simultaneous resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under pressure on a polycrystal with very large single-crystalline domains and a resistivity ratio of about 6. Both methods confirm the phase diagram established before by resistivity measurements on a polycrystal. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed for P approximately 1.2 GPa. Astonishingly, the superconductivity persists at pressures up to at least 2.4 GPa. In other superconducting and ferromagnetic heavy fermion compounds like UGe2 and URhGe, the superconducting state is situated only inside the larger ferromagnetic region. Therefore, UCoGe seems to be the first example where superconductivity extends from the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic region.
The upper critical field for field along the b-axis of the p-wave ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe has a particular S-shape, akin to the re-entrant superconducting phase of URhGe. To explore the evolution of the superconducting phase under this transverse magnetic field, we report the thermal conductivity and resistivity measurements, revealing a possible field-induced vortex liquid phase, and supporting a field-induced change of the superconducting order parameter.
The pressure-temperature phase diagram of the orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe was determined by resistivity measurements up to $10.5~$GPa. The Curie temperature $T_C$ is suppressed with pressure and vanishes at the critical pressure $p_c\approx1~$GPa. Superconductivity is observed in both the ferromagnetic state at low pressure, and in the paramagnetic state above $p_c$ up to about 4$~$GPa. Non-Fermi liquid behavior appears in a large pressure range. The resistivity varies linearly with temperature around $p_c$ and evolves continuously with pressure to a $T^2$ Fermi-liquid beha…
We present high field magnetoresistance, Hall effect and thermopower measurements in the Ising-type ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Magnetic field is applied along the easy magnetization $c$ axis of the orthorhombic crystal. In the different experimental probes we observed five successive anomalies at $H \approx 4$, 9, 12, 16, and 21~T. Magnetic quantum oscillations were detected both in resistivity and thermoelectric power. At most of the anomalies, significant changes of the oscillation frequencies and the effective masses have been observed indicating successive Fermi surface instabilit…
We prepared single crystals in UCo1-xRhxGe and UIr1-xRhxGe systems to establish a complex dU-U-T (dU-U is the shortest interatomic uranium distance and T is temperature) magnetic phase diagram. This recognized a characteristic maximum in magnetic susceptibility at temperature Tmax along the b axis as an important parameter. Three magnetically ordered regions can be distinguished within this scope; first a ferromagnetic region with Curie temperature < Tmax, second a ferromagnetic region with Curie temperature = Tmax and finally an antiferromagnetic region existing on the UIrGe side with Néel te…
Ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe has orthorhombic structure and possesses spontaneous magnetisation along the c-axis. Magnetic field directed along the $b$-axis suppresses ferromagnetism in $c$-direction and leads to a metamagnetic transition into polarised paramagnetic state in the $b$-direction. The theory of these phenomena based on the specific magnetic anisotropy of this material in $(b,c)$ plane is given. Line of the first order metamagnetic transition ends at a critical point. The Van der Waals - type description of behaviour of physical properties near this point is developed. The tr…
The evolution of magnetic properties of isostructural and isoelectronic solid solutions of the superconducting itinerant 5f-electron ferromagnet UCoGe with antiferromagnet UIrGe was studied by magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements of a series of UCo1-xIrxGe compounds in polycrystalline and single crystalline form at various temperatures and magnetic fields. Both the weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity in UCoGe were found to have vanished already for very low Ir substitution for Co x = 0.02. The antiferromagnetism of UIrGe is gradually su…
Crystallography, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity of heavy fermion LiV$_2$O$_4$ single crystals grown using a self-flux technique
We grew single crystals of U6Co by the self-flux method and measured the magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and specific heat. The magnetic susceptibility shows very small anisotropy and weak temperature dependence, indicating small spin-susceptibility. Superconductivity was clearly observed in the resistivity, susceptibility, and specific heat at Tc~2.3K. The upper critical field was remarkably large, 7.9 and 6.6T for H || [001] and [110], respectively, in the tetragonal structure, indicating that the ellipsoidal Fermi surface is slightly suppressed along the [001] direction according to t…
The trilayer nickelate Nd$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$ ($δ\approx$ 0.15) was investigated by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity. The crystal structure data suggest a higher Ni valence in the inner perovskite-like layer. At ambient pressure the resistivity shows a jump at 162 K, indicating a metal-to-metal transition (MMT). The MMT is also characterized by a magnetic susceptibility drop, a sharp specific-heat peak, and an isotropic lattice contraction. Below $\sim$ 50 K, a resistivity upturn with a log$T$ dependence shows up, accompa…
Abnormal T-linear susceptibility and Phase diagram of BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ single crystals
电输运、比热和磁化率表明,BaFe $_{2-x}$ Co $_x$ As $_2$在x = 0.17附近存在SDW和超导电性,与(Ba,K)Fe $_2$ As $_2$类似.
The layered honeycomb lattice iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ is the closest realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, primarily due to the enhanced interlayer separation and nearly ideal honeycomb lattice. We report pressure-induced structural evolution of Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ by powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) up to $\sim$17 GPa and Raman scattering measurements up to $\sim$25 GPa. A structural phase transition (monoclinic $C2/c \: \rightarrow$ triclinic $P\bar{1}$) is observed with a broad mixed phase pressure range ($\sim$4 to 15 GPa). The triclinic phase consists of heavily distorted honeycomb lattic…
Antiferromagnetic transition in EuFe$_2$As$_2$: A possible parent compound for superconductors
We report the band structure calculations and the experimental results of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility in a spin-1/2 (BEDT-TTF)$^{\bullet +}$ monomer Mott insulator (BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)$_2$]$_2$. The band calculations indicate a Dirac semimetal state with nodal lines at the Fermi level. The resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility as functions of temperature are well interpreted in terms of the monomer Mott insulating state instead of the expected semimetal state probably owing to strong electron correlation. In addition, we find that an Arrhenius-type steep reduction of the parama…
We report on low temperature susceptibility and magnetization measurements made on single crystals of the recently discovered heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ and compare the results with the two ambient pressure ferromagnetic superconductors URhGe and UCoGe. Hysteresis curves in the superconducting phase show a familiar diamond shape superimposed on a large paramagnetic background. The Meissner state was measured by zero field cooling in small fields of a few Oe as well as ac susceptibility measurements in small fields and resulted in 100\% shielding, with a sharp transition. However the …
We present a detailed study of the temperature evolution of the crystal structure, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and resistivity of single crystals of the paradigmatic valence-fluctuating compound EuIr$_2$Si$_2$. A comparison to stable-valent isostructural compounds EuCo$_2$Si$_2$ (with Eu$^{3+}$), and EuRh$_2$Si$_2$, (with Eu$^{2+}$) reveals an anomalously large thermal expansion indicative of the lattice softening associated to valence fluctuations. A marked broad peak at temperatures around 65-75 K is observed in specific heat, susceptibility and the derivative of resistivity, as t…
We report the results of our investigations on a polycrystalline sample of Lu$_2$Ir$_3$Si$_5$ which crystallizes in the U$_2$Co$_3$Si$_5$ type structure (Ibam). These investigations comprise powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and high temperature (120-300 K) heat capacity studies. Our results reveal that the sample undergoes a superconducting transition below 3.5 K. It also undergoes a first order phase transition between 150-250 K as revealed by an upturn in the resistivity, a diasmagnetic drop in the magnetic susceptibility and a large anomaly (20-30 J/…
