We report that intrinsic transport and magnetic properties, and their anisotropy from high quality single crystal $CaFe_2As_2$. The resistivity anisotropy ($ρ_c/ρ_{ab}$) is $\sim 50 $, and less than 150 of $BaFe_2As_2$, which arises from the strong coupling along c-axis due to an apparent contraction of about 0.13 nm compared to $BaFe_2As_2$. Temperature independent anisotropy indicates that the transport in ab plane and along c-axis direction shares the same scattering mechanism. In sharp contrast to the case of parent compounds $ROFeAs$ (R=rare earth) and $MFe_2As_2$ (M=Ba and Sr), spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering (or structural transition) leads to a steep increase of resistivity in $CaFe_2As_2$. Such different resistivity response to SDW ordering is helpful to understand the role played by SDW ordering in Fe-based high-$T_c$ superconductors. The susceptibility behavior is very similar to that observed in single crystal $BaFe_2As_2$. A linear temperature dependent susceptibility occurs above SDW transition of about 165 K. Partial substitution of Na for Ca suppresses the SWD ordering (anomaly in resistivity) and induces occurrence of superconductivity at $\sim 20$ K.
We systematically studied the transport properties of single crystals of $Eu_{1-x}Sr_xFe_{2-y}$Co$_{y}As_2$. Co doping can suppress the spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and induces a superconducting transition, but a resistivity reentrance due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of $Eu^{2+}$ spins is observed, indicating the competition between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity. It is striking that the resistivity reentrance can be completely suppressed by external magnetic field (H) because a metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism for $Eu^{2+}$ spins is i…
We synthesized the samples $Ba_{1-x}M_xFe_2As_2$ (M=La and K) with $ThCr_2Si_2$-type structure. These samples were systematically characterized by resistivity, thermoelectic power (TEP) and Hall coefficient ($R_H$). $BaFe_2As_2$ shows an anomaly in resistivity at about 140 K. Substitution of La for Ba leads to a shift of the anomaly to low temperature, but no superconducting transition is observed. Potassium doping leads to suppression of the anomaly in resistivity and induces superconductivity at 38 K as reported by Rotter et al.\cite{rotter}. The Hall coefficient and TEP measurements indicat…
The transport and superconducting properties of Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2 single crystals with T_c = 31 K were studied. Both in-plane and out-of plane resistivity was measured by modified Montgomery method. The in-plane resistivity for all studied samples, obtained in the course of the same synthesis, is almost the same, unlike to the out-of plane resistivity, which differ considerably. We have found that the resistivity anisotropy γ=ρ_c /ρ_{ab} is almost temperature independent and lies in the range 10-30 for different samples. This, probably, indicates on the extrinsic nature of high out-of-plane …
The parent compound of an unconventional superconductor must contain unusual correlated electronic and magnetic properties of its own. In the high-Tc potassium intercalated FeSe, there has been significant debate regarding what the exact parent compound is. Our studies unambiguously show that the Fe-vacancy ordered K2Fe4Se5 is the magnetic, Mott insulating parent compound of the superconducting state. Non-superconducting K2Fe4Se5 becomes a superconductor after high temperature annealing, and the overall picture indicates that superconductivity in K2-xFe4+ySe5 originates from the Fe-vacancy ord…
An intriguing aspect of unconventional superconductivity is that it always appears in the vicinity of other competing phases, whose suppression brings the full emergence of superconductivity. In the iron-pnictides, these competing phases are marked by a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition and a collinear spin-density-wave (SDW) transition. There has been macroscopic evidence for competition between these phases and superconductivity as the magnitude of both the orthorhombicity and magnetic moment are suppressed in the superconducting state. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission…
The recently discovered (Li${_{1-x}}$Fe${_x}$)OHFeSe superconductor with $T_c$ about 40K provides a good platform for investigating the magnetization and electrical transport properties of FeSe-based superconductors. By using a hydrothermal ion-exchange method, we have successfully grown crystals of (Li${_{1-x}}$Fe${_x}$)OHFeSe. X-ray diffraction on the sample shows the single crystalline PbO-type structure with the c-axis preferential orientation. Magnetic susceptibility and resistive measurements show an onset superconducting transition at around ${T_c}$=38.3K. Using the magnetization hyster…
From the measurement and analysis of the specific heat of high-quality K_(1-x)Na_xFe_2As_2 single crystals we establish the presence of large T^2 contributions with coefficients alpha_sc ~ 30 mJ/mol K^3 at low-T for both x=0 and 0.1. Together with the observed square root field behavior of the specific heat in the superconducting state both findings evidence d-wave superconductivity on almost all Fermi surface sheets with an average gap amplitude of Delta_0 in the range of 0.4 - 0.8 meV. The derived Delta_0 and the observed T_c agree well with the values calculated within the Eliashberg theory…
We investigate the magnetic penetration depth λin superconducting Ba_1-xK_xFe_2As_2 (T_c\simeq32K) with muon-spin rotation (\muSR) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). Using \muSR, we find the penetration-depth anisotropy γ_λ=λ_c/λ_{ab} and the second-critical-field anisotropy γ_{H_c2} to show an opposite T-evolution below T_c. This dichotomy resembles the situation in the two-gap superconductor MgB_2. A two-gap scenario is also suggested by an inflection point in the in-plane penetration depth λ_ab around 7K. The complementarity of \muSR and ARPES allows us to pinpoint the values of the …
Superconductivity in iron selenides has experienced a rapid growth, but not without major inconsistencies in the reported properties. For alkali-intercalated iron selenides, even the structure of the superconducting phase is a subject of debate, in part because the onset of superconductivity is affected much more delicately by stoichiometry and preparation than in cuprate or pnictide superconductors. If high-quality, pure, superconducting intercalated iron selenides are ever to be made, the intertwined physics and chemistry must be explained by systematic studies of how these materials form an…
The competition among superconductivity, stripe-type magnetic order, and a new type of $C_4$ symmetric magnetic order in $\mathrm{Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2}$ is theoretically studied, focusing on its impact on the global phase diagram. By carrying out a renormalization group analysis of an effective field theory, we obtain the energy-scale dependent flows of all the model parameters, and then apply the results to understand the observed phase diagram. On the basis of the renormalization group analysis, we show that the critical line of nematic order has a negative slope in the superconducting dome a…
The magnetic fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point (QCP) are widely believed to cause the non-Fermi liquid behaviors and unconventional superconductivities, for example, in heavy fermion systems and high temperature cuprate superconductors. Recently, superconductivity has been discovered in iron-based layered compound $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ with $T_c$=26 K\cite{yoichi}, and it competes with spin-density-wave (SDW) order\cite{dong}. Neutron diffraction shows a long-rang SDW-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order at $\sim 134$ K in LaOFeAs\cite{cruz,mcguire}. Therefore, a possible QCP and…
Recently, phenyl molecules have been reported to exhibit Meissner effect mainly from magnetization measurements. Realizing zero-resistivity state in these materials seems a challenge due to many practical difficulties but is required to characterize the existence of superconductivity. By choosing potassium-doped tris(2-methylphenyl)bismuthine as an example, we perform temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements at different magnetic fields and pressures. The solid evidence for supporting superconductivity is achieved from the obtained Meissner effect and zero res…
The pressure-induced reemergence of the second high-Tc superconducting phase (SC-II) in the alkali-metal intercalated AxFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Rb, Cs, Tl) remains an enigma and proper characterizations on the superconducting- and normal-state properties of the SC-II phase were hampered by the intrinsic inhomogeneity and phase separation. To elucidate this intriguing problem, we performed a detailed high-pressure magnetotransport study on the recently discovered (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe single crystals, which have high Tc~40 K and share similar Fermi surface topology as AxFe2-ySe2, but are free from the s…
We present zero field and transverse field \muSR experiments on the recently discovered electron doped Fe-based superconductor LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs. The zero field experiments on underdoped (x=0.075) and optimally doped (x=0.1) samples rule out any static magnetic order above 1.6 K in these superconducting samples. From transverse field experiments in the vortex phase we deduce the temperature and field dependence of the superfluid density. Whereas the temperature dependence is consistent with a weak coupling BCS s-wave or a dirty d-wave gap function scenario, the field dependence strongly evidenc…
Electron-doped infinite-layer Sr$_{1-x}$Eu$_{x}$CuO$_{2+y}$ films over a wide doping range have been prepared epitaxially on SrTiO$_3$(001) using reactive molecular beam epitaxy. In-plane transport measurements of the single crystalline samples reveal a dome-shaped nodeless superconducting phase centered at $x$ $\sim$ 0.15, a Fermi-liquid behavior and pronounced upturn in low temperature resistivity. We show that the resistivity upturn follows square-root temperature dependence, suggesting the emergence of superconductivity via a three-dimensional percolation process. The percolative supercond…
We measure the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility in the temperature range from 5 K to 600 K for the single crystals $A$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ ($A$ = K$_{0.8}$, Rb$_{0.8}$, Cs$_{0.8}$, Tl$_{0.5}$K$_{0.3}$ and Tl$_{0.4}$Rb$_{0.4}$). A sharp superconducting transition is observed in low temperature resistivity and susceptibility, and susceptibility shows 100% Meissner volume fraction for all crystals, while an antiferromagnetic transition is observed in susceptibility at Neel temperature ($T_N$) as high as 500 K to 540 K depending on A. It indicates the coexistence of superconductivity and antife…
We performed the high hydrostatic pressure resistivity measurements (up to 1.7 GPa) on the newly discovered superconductors $A_{x}$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs) single crystals. Two batches of single crystals $K_xFe_2Se_2$ with different transition temperatures ($T_c$) were used to study the effect of pressure. The $T_c$ of the first one gradually decreases with increasing pressure from 32.6 K at ambient pressure. While a dome-like behavior was observed for the crystal with $T_c=31.1$ K, and $T_c$ reaches its maximum value of 32.7 K at the pressure of 0.48 GPa. It indicates that there exists a…
We have investigated Se substitution effect to superconductivity of an optimally-doped BiS2-based superconductor Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2. Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex samples with x = 0-1 were synthesized. With increasing x, in-plane chemical pressure is enhanced. For x = 0.6, 0.8, and 1, superconducting transitions with a large shielding volume fraction are observed in magnetic susceptibility measurements, and the highest Tc is 3.8 K for x = 0.8. From low-temperature electrical resistivity measurements, a zero-resistivity state is observed for all the samples, and the highest Tc is observed for x = 0.8. With…
We report bulk superconductivity at 2.5K in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound through the DC magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements. The synthesized LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm and Reitveld refined lattice parameters are a= 4.15(1)A and c=14.02(2)A. The lower critical field of Hc1= 40Oe, at temperature 2K is estimated through the low field magnetization measurements. The LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound showed metallic normal state electrical resistivity with residual resistivity value of 1.35mΩ-cm. The compound is type-II su…
High pressure electrical resistivity and x-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on Fe single crystals. The crystallographic investigation provides direct evidence that in the martensitic $bcc \rightarrow hcp$ transition at 14 GPa the $\lbrace 110\rbrace_{bcc}$ become the $\lbrace 002\rbrace_{hcp}$ directions. During a pressure cycle, resistivity shows a broad hysteresis of 6.5 GPa, whereas superconductivity, observed between 13 and 31 GPa, remains unaffected. Upon increasing pressure an electronic instability, probably a quantum critical point, is observed at around 19 GPa and, clos…
It has been proposed that there are two types of superconductivity in CeCu2Si2, mediated by spin fluctuations at ambient pressure, and by critical valence fluctuations around a charge instability at a pressure P_v \simeq 4.5 GPa. We present in detail some of the unusual features of this novel type of superconducting state, including the coexistence of superconductivity and huge residual resistivity of the order of the Ioffe-Regel limit, large and pressure dependent resistive transition widths in a single crystal measured under hydrostatic conditions, asymmetric pressure dependence of the speci…
We have constructed a pressure$-$temperature ($P-T$) phase diagram of $P$-induced superconductivity in EuFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals, via resistivity ($ρ$) measurements up to 3.2 GPa. As hydrostatic pressure is applied, an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition attributed to the FeAs layers at $T_\mathrm{0}$ shifts to lower temperatures, and the corresponding resistive anomaly becomes undetectable for $P$ $\ge$ 2.5 GPa. This suggests that the critical pressure $P_\mathrm{c}$ where $T_\mathrm{0}$ becomes zero is about 2.5 GPa. We have found that the AF order of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments survives up to …
Single crystals of A$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (A=Ba, Sr) with high quality have been grown successfully by FeAs self-flux method. The samples have sizes up to 4 mm with flat and shiny surfaces. The X-ray diffraction patterns suggest that they have high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. The non-superconducting crystals show a spin-density-wave (SDW) instability at about 173 K and 135 K for Sr-based and Ba-based compound, respectively. After doping K as the hole dopant into the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system, the SDW transition is smeared, and superconducting samples with the compound of Ba$_{1…
We investigate the flux flow state in a two-gap superconductor in which two s-wave gaps with different amplitudes exist on two separate Fermi surfaces. The flux flow resistivity is obtained on the basis of the Bardeen-Stephen relation and the result agrees well with the anomalous field dependence of the flow resistivity recently observed in the two-gap superconductor MgB2. Some typical properties of the vortex in this system are also discussed.
Superconducting thin films of magnesium diboride (MgB$_2$) were prepared on MgO (001) substrate by a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method with the co-evaporation conditions of low deposition rate in ultra-high vacuum. The structural and physical properties of the films were studied by RHEED, XRD, XPS, resistivity and magnetization measurements. All films demonstrated superconductivity without use of any post-annealing process. The highest {\it T}$_{c,onset}$ determined by resistivity measurement was about 33K in the present samples.Anisotropic superconducting properties were evaluated by the resi…
Phase slips creation in the thin film in perpendicular magnetic filed with edge superconductivity is studied. These centers are due to thermal activation of the order parameter below superconducting temperature transition leading to the suppression of the superconductivity. The corresponding resistance is calculated. The Alsamazov- Larkin correction to the conductivity above the critical magnetic field destroying the surface superconductivity is studied. Such structures could be applied as a new system for the study of the phase slip phenomenon in one- dimensional superconducting wires.
We followed the evolution of the normal and superconducting properties of Al thin films after each session of various successive oxygen irradiations at ambient temperature. Such irradiated films, similar to the granular ones, exhibit enhanced superconductivity, Kondo behavior and negative-curvature resistivity. Two distinct roles of oxygen are identified: as a damage-causing projectile and as an implanted oxidizing agent. The former gives rise to the processes involved in the conventional recovery stages. The latter, considered within the context of the Cabrera-Mott model, gives rise to a mult…
The superconductor YB6 has the second highest critical temperature Tc among the boride family MBn. We report measurements of the specific heat, resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and thermal expansion from 2 to 300 K, using a single crystal with Tc = 7.2 K. The superconducting gap is characteristic of medium-strong coupling. The specific heat, resistivity and expansivity curves are deconvolved to yield approximations of the phonon density of states, the spectral electron-phonon scattering function and the phonon density of states weighted by the frequency-dependent Grueneisen parameter respe…
A detailed analysis is given of the T^2 term in the resistivity observed in electron-doped SrTiO3. Novel bandstructure data are presented, which provide values for the bare mass, density of states, and plasma frequency of the quasiparticles as a function of doping. It is shown that these values are renormalized by approximately a factor 2 due to electron-phonon interaction. It is argued that the quasiparticles are in the anti-adiabatic limit with respect to electron-phonon interaction. The condition of anti-adiabatic coupling renders the interaction mediated through phonons effectively non-ret…
UCoGe is one of the few compounds showing the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity at ambient pressure. With T_Curie = 3 K and T_SC = 0.6 K it is near a quantum phase transition; the pressure needed to suppress the magnetism is slightly higher than 1 GPa. We report simultaneous resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under pressure on a polycrystal with very large single-crystalline domains and a resistivity ratio of about 6. Both methods confirm the phase diagram established before by resistivity measurements on a polycrystal. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed for P …
In recent years there have been reports of anomalous electrical resistivity and the presence of superconductivity in semiconducting InN layers. By a careful correlation of the temperature dependence of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility with structural information from highresolution x-ray diffraction measurements we show that superconductivity is not intrinsic to InN and is seen only in samples that show traces of oxygen impurity. We hence believe that InN is not intrinsically a superconducting semiconductor.
We report resistivity measurement under pressure in single crystals of SrFe_2As_2, which is one of the parent materials of Fe-based superconductors. The structural and antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition of T_0 = 198 K at ambient pressure is suppressed under pressure, and the ordered phase disappears above P_c ~ 3.6-3.7 GPa. Superconductivity with a sharp transition appears accompanied by the suppression of the AFM state. T_c exhibits a maximum of 34.1 K, which is realized close to the phase boundary at P_c. This T_c is the highest among those of the stoichiometric Fe-based superconductors.
We measure the resistivity and Hall angle of the electron-doped superconductor Pr_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 as a function of doping and temperature. The resistivity Rho_xx at temperatures 100K < T < 300K is mostly sensitive to the electrons. Its temperature behavior is doping independent over a wide doping range and even for non superconducting samples. On the other hand, the transverse resistivity rho_xy, or the Hall angle theta_H where cot(theta_H) = rho_xx/rho_xy, is sensitive to both holes and electrons. Its temperature dependence is strongly influenced by doping, and cot(theta_H) can be used to ident…
Recently, coexistence of ferromagnetism (T_Curie = 2.8K) and superconductivity (T_sc = 0.8K) has been reported in UCoGe, a compound close to a ferromagnetic instability at ambient pressure P. Here we present resistivity measurements under pressure on a UCoGe polycrystal. The phase diagram obtained from resistivity measurements on a polycrystalline sample is found to be qualitatively different to those of all other ferromagnetic superconductors. By applying high pressure, ferromagnetism is suppressed at a rate of 1.4 K/GPa. No indication of ferromagnetic order has been observed above P ~ 1GPa. …
The pressure dependences of resistivity and ac susceptibility have been measured in the mineral calaverite AuTe$_2$. Resistivity clearly shows a first-order phase transition into a high-pressure phase, consistent with the results of a previous structural analysis. We found zero resistivity and a diamagnetic shielding signal at low temperatures in the high-pressure phase, which clearly indicates the appearance of superconductivity. Our experimental results suggest that bulk superconductivity appears only in the high-pressure phase. For AuTe$_2$, the highest superconducting transition temperatur…
We report resistivity measurements of the helimagnet CrAs under pressures. The helimagnetic transition with T_N ~ 265 K at ambient pressure is completely suppressed above a critical pressure of P_c ~ 0.7 GPa, and superconductivity is observed at ~2.2 K for zero resistance, which exists in a wide pressure range extending beyond 3 GPa. Both the upper critical field H_{c2} and the coefficient A in the resistivity increase toward P_c, suggesting that the superconductivity of CrAs is mediated by electronic correlations enhanced in the vicinity of the helimagnetic phase.
We have studied the intrinsic normal and superconducting properties of the oxypnictide LaFePO. These samples exhibit bulk superconductivity and the evidence suggests that stoichiometric LaFePO is indeed superconducting, in contrast to other reports. We find that superconductivity is independent of the interplane residual resistivity $ρ_0$ and discuss the implications of this on the nature of the superconducting order parameter. Finally we find that, unlike $T_c$, other properties in single-crystal LaFePO including the resistivity and magnetoresistance, can be very sensitive to disorder.
High pressure effects on the superconducting transitions of beta-pyrochlore superconductors AOs2O6 (A = Cs, Rb, K) are studied by measuring resistivity under high pressures up to 10 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature Tc first increases with increasing pressure in all the compounds and then exhibits a broad maximum at 7.6 K (6 GPa), 8.2 K (2 GPa) and 10 K (0.6 GPa) for A = Cs, Rb and K, respectviely. Finally, the superconductivity is suppressed completely at a critical pressure near 7 GPa and 6 GPa for A = Rb and K and probably above 10 GPa for A = Cs. Characteristic changes in the…
We investigate the effect of substituting Si for Ge in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on polycrystalline UCoGe$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ samples show that ferromagnetic order and superconductivity are progressively depressed with increasing Si content and simultaneously vanish at a critical concentration $x_{cr} \simeq 0.12$. The non-Fermi liquid temperature variation in the electrical resistivity near $x_{cr}$ and the smooth depression of the ordered moment point to a continuous ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. Su…
We report the measurements of resistivity and magnetization under magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the basal plane, respectively, on a cobalt-doped Eu(Fe$_{0.89}$Co$_{0.11}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal. We observed a resistivity drop at $T_c\sim$ 21 K, which shifts toward lower temperatures under external fields, suggesting a superconducting transition. The upper critical fields near $T_c$ show large anisotropy, in contrast with those of other '122' FeAs-based superconductors. Low-field magnetic susceptibility data also show evidence of superconductivity below 21 K. Instead of e…
We report on the impact of hydrostatic pressure on the superconductivity of optimally (Indium) doped SnTe which is established to be derived from a topological crystalline insulating phase. Single crystals of Sn1-xInxTe were synthesized by a modified Bridgman method that exhibited maximum superconducting Tc of 4.4 K for x= 0.5. Hydrostatic pressure upto 2.5 GPa was applied on the crystals of Sn0.5In0.5Te and electrical resistivity as a function of temperature and pressure was measured. We observed decrease in onset superconducting transition temperature from 4.4 K to 2.8 K on increasing pressu…
Recently we had proposed a mechanism for the normal-state C-axis resistivity of the high-T$_c$ layered cuprates that involved blocking of the single-particle tunneling between the weakly coupled planes by strong intra-planar electron-electron scattering. This gave a C-axis resistivity that tracks the ab-plane T-linear resistivity, as observed in the high-temperature limit. In this work this mechanism is examined further for its implication for the ground-state energy and superconductivity of the layered cuprates. It is now argued that, unlike the single-particle tunneling, the tunneling of a b…
We have investigated a series of superconducting bridges based on homogeneous amorphous WSi and MoSi films, with bridge widths w ranging from 2 um to 1000 um and film thicknesses d ~ 4-6 nm and 100 nm. Upon decreasing the bridge widths below the respective Pearl lengths, we observe in all cases distinct changes in the characteristics of the resistive transitions to superconductivity. For each of the films, the resistivity curves R(B,T) separate at a well-defined and field-dependent temperature T*(B) with decreasing the temperature, resulting in a dramatic suppression of the resistivity and a s…
High quality single crystals of a ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe were successfully grown. The electrical resistivity was measured for the field along b-axis in the orthorhombic crystal structure in order to study precisely its field re-entrant superconductivity which occurs in the vicinity of the field $H_{\rm R}$, where the easy magnetization switches from $c$ to b-axis. The field re-entrant superconductivity of URhGe is analyzed with special focus on its dependence with the value of residual resistivity $ρ_0$ and the coefficient $A$ of $T^2$ term of the resistivity. The experimental resu…
Electrical resistivity under high pressure have been measured on nominally pure SrFe2As2 up to 14 GPa. The resistivity drop appeared with increasing pressure, and we clearly observed zero resistivity. The maximum of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is 38 K. The value is corresponding to the one of optimally doping AFe2As2 (A=Sr, Ba) system with K+ ions at the A2+ site.
Layered doped Mott insulators, such as the cuprates, show unusual temperature dependence of the resistivity. Intriguingly, the resistivity perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes, $ρ_c(T)$, shows both metallic ($dρ_c/dT > 0$) and semi-conducting ($dρ_c/dT<0$) behavior. We shed light on this puzzle by calculating $ρ_c$ for the two-dimensional Hubbard model within plaquette cellular dynamical mean-field theory and strong-coupling continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo as the impurity solver. The temperature, $T$, and doping, $δ$, dependencies of $ρ_c$ are controlled by the first-order transition betwee…
We report on the phase diagram for charge-stripe order in La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4), determined by neutron and x-ray scattering studies and resistivity measurements. From an analysis of the in-plane resistivity motivated by recent nuclear-quadrupole-resonance studies, we conclude that the transition temperature for local charge ordering decreases monotonically with x, and hence that local antiferromagnetic order is uniquely correlated with the anomalous depression of superconductivity at x = 1/8. This result is consistent with theories in which superconductivity depends on the existence of c…
We report the synthesis and physical properties of single crystals of stoichiometric BaNi2As2 that crystalizes in the ThCr2Si2 structure with lattice parameters a = 4.112(4) Åand c = 11.54(2) Å. Resistivity and heat capacity show a first order phase transition at T_0 = 130 K with a thermal hysteresis of 7 K. The Hall coefficient is weakly temperature dependent from room temperature to 2 K where it has a value of -4x10^{-10} Ω-cm/Oe. Resistivity, ac-susceptibility, and heat capacity find evidence for bulk superconductivity at T_c = 0.7 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient at T_c is 11.6 \pm 0.9 mJ/mol…
We report the out-of-plane resistivity in the systematically oxygen-controlled single crystals Bi$_{1.74}$Pb$_{0.38}$Sr$_{1.88}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ in magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis. Two characteristic temperatures $T^*$ and $T^{**}$ are found at which a semiconductor-like upturn starts to develop and the magnetoresistance changes its sign from positive to negative at lower temperature, respectively. The obtained phase diagram strongly suggests that the pseudogap temperature correlating to the superconducting gap is not $T^{*}$ but $T^{**}$. The gap opened at $T^*$ may relate to another phenom…
An understanding of the normal state in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates is crucial to the ultimate understanding of the long-standing problem of the origin of the superconductivity itself. This so-called strange metal state is thought to be associated with a quantum critical point (QCP) hidden beneath the superconductivity(1,2). In electron-doped cuprates in contrast to hole-doped cuprates it is possible to access the normal state at very low temperatures and low magnetic fields to study this putative QCP and to probe the T~0 K state of these materials(3,4). We report measurement…
Here we report the discovery of superconductivity in the ternary LaRu2As2 compound. The polycrystalline LaRu2As2 samples were synthesized by the conventional solid state reaction method. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that LaRu2As2 crystallizes in the ThCr2Si2-type crystal structure with the space group I4/mmm (No. 139), and the refined lattice parameters are a = 4.182(6) Å and c = 10.590(3) Å. The temperature dependent resistivity measurement shows a clear superconducting transition with the onset Tc (critical temperature) at 7.8 K, and zero resistivity happens at 6.8 K. The uppe…
We have systematically investigated the crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity of the BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2 (x = 0 - 0.7). With expanding lattice volume by Se substitution, bulk superconductivity was induced for x > 0.2, and the highest Tc of 3.8 K was observed in x = 0.5 (LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe). Metallic conductivity was observed for x > 0.3 in the resistivity measurement, whereas semiconducting-like behavior was observed for x < 0.2. The induction of bulk superconductivity by the partial substitution of S by Se in the LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superc…
We present a detailed study of RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy) single crystals by measurements of stoichiometry and temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and electrical resistivity. This series forms with partial Ni occupancy as well as a variable Bi occupancy. For R = Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy, the RNi1-xBi2+-y compounds show local-moment like behavior and order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Determination of anisotropies as well as antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures for RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy) have been made. Although crystalline samples from t…
We studied the correlation among structure and transport properties and superconductivity in the different $A_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ single crystals ($A$ = K, Rb, and Cs). Two sets of (00$l$) reflections are observed in the X-ray single crystal diffraction patterns, and arise from the intrinsic inhomogeneous distribution of the intercalated alkali atoms. The occurrence of superconductivity is closely related to the {\sl c}-axis lattice constant, and the $A$ content is crucial to superconductivity. The hump observed in resistivity seems to be irrelevant to superconductivity. There exist many deficienci…
We present the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the antiferromagnet CeAg$_2$Si$_2$ established via resistivity and calorimetry measurements under quasi-hydrostatic conditions up to 22.5~GPa. With increasing pressure, the Néel temperature [$T_{\mathrm{N}}(p=0)=8.6$~K] slowly increases up to $T_{\mathrm{N}}=13.4$~K at 9.4~GPa and then vanishes abruptly at the magnetic critical pressure $p_{\mathrm{c}}\sim13$~GPa. For the first time, heavy fermion superconductivity is observed in CeAg$_2$Si$_2$ . Superconductivity emerges at $\sim 11$~GPa and persists over roughly 10~GPa. Partial- and bulk-t…
We report resistivity and magnetization of single crystal MgB2, focusing on the broadening of superconducting (SC) transition in magnetic fields. In-plane and out-of-plane resistivity indicate that the broadening of superconducting transition is independent of Lorentz force and that it is merely dependent on the magnetic field direction. In magnetization, diamagnetic signal begins to appear at almost the same temperature as the onset temperature of resistivity transition. These results suggest that the broadening is attributed not to the surface superconductivity but to the superconducting flu…
