Recently, coexistence of ferromagnetism (T_Curie = 2.8K) and superconductivity (T_sc = 0.8K) has been reported in UCoGe, a compound close to a ferromagnetic instability at ambient pressure P. Here we present resistivity measurements under pressure on a UCoGe polycrystal. The phase diagram obtained from resistivity measurements on a polycrystalline sample is found to be qualitatively different to those of all other ferromagnetic superconductors. By applying high pressure, ferromagnetism is suppressed at a rate of 1.4 K/GPa. No indication of ferromagnetic order has been observed above P ~ 1GPa. The resistive superconducting transition is, however, quite stable in temperature and persists up to the highest measured pressure of about 2.4GPa. Superconductivity would therefore appear also in the paramagnetic phase. However, the appearance of superconductivity seems to change at a characteristic pressure P* ~ 0.8GPa. Close to a ferromagnetic instability, the homogeneity of the sample can influence strongly the electronic and magnetic properties and therefore bulk phase transitions may differ from the determination by resistivity measurements.
UCoGe is one of the few compounds showing the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity at ambient pressure. With T_Curie = 3 K and T_SC = 0.6 K it is near a quantum phase transition; the pressure needed to suppress the magnetism is slightly higher than 1 GPa. We report simultaneous resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under pressure on a polycrystal with very large single-crystalline domains and a resistivity ratio of about 6. Both methods confirm the phase diagram established before by resistivity measurements on a polycrystal. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed for P …
We investigate the effect of substituting Si for Ge in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on polycrystalline UCoGe$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ samples show that ferromagnetic order and superconductivity are progressively depressed with increasing Si content and simultaneously vanish at a critical concentration $x_{cr} \simeq 0.12$. The non-Fermi liquid temperature variation in the electrical resistivity near $x_{cr}$ and the smooth depression of the ordered moment point to a continuous ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. Su…
The upper critical field for field along the b-axis of the p-wave ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe has a particular S-shape, akin to the re-entrant superconducting phase of URhGe. To explore the evolution of the superconducting phase under this transverse magnetic field, we report the thermal conductivity and resistivity measurements, revealing a possible field-induced vortex liquid phase, and supporting a field-induced change of the superconducting order parameter.
The pressure-temperature phase diagram of the orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe was determined by resistivity measurements up to $10.5~$GPa. The Curie temperature $T_C$ is suppressed with pressure and vanishes at the critical pressure $p_c\approx1~$GPa. Superconductivity is observed in both the ferromagnetic state at low pressure, and in the paramagnetic state above $p_c$ up to about 4$~$GPa. Non-Fermi liquid behavior appears in a large pressure range. The resistivity varies linearly with temperature around $p_c$ and evolves continuously with pressure to a $T^2$ Fermi-liquid beha…
Single-crystals of the new ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe have been grown. The quality of as-grown samples can be significantly improved by a heat-treatment procedure, which increases the residual resistance ratio (RRR) from ~5 to ~30. Magnetization and resistivity measurements show the annealed samples have a sharp ferromagnetic transition with a Curie temperature T_C is 2.8 K. The ordered moment of 0.06 mu_B is directed along the orthorhombic c-axis. Superconductivity is found below a resistive transition temperature T_s = 0.65 K.
We propose an alternate scenario for the relation between ferromagnetism (FM) and superconductivity (SC) in UCoGe at ambient pressure. On the basis of neutron polarimetry measurement performed in strictly zero field on a single-crystal at ambient pressure, we claim that the SC phase does exist in spite of lack of long-range FM order. Moreover, the SC regime dominates to the paramagnetic (PM) state in small external magnetic fields. Above the critical SC temperature, TSC = 0.64 K, the zero-field state is characterized by a regime with strong FM spin fluctuations, suggesting the proximity of the…
We succeeded in growing high quality single crystals of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe and measured the magnetoresistance at fields up to 34T. The Shubnikov-de Haas signal was observed for the first time in a U-111 system (UTGe, UTSi, T: transition metal). A small pocket Fermi surface (F~1kT) with large cyclotron effective mass 25m0 was detected at high fields above 22T, implying that UCoGe is a low carrier system accompanyed with heavy quasi-particles. The observed frequency decreases with increasing fields, indicating that the volume of detected Fermi surface changes nonlinearly with…
We report a high-pressure single crystal study of the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe. Ac-susceptibility and resistivity measurements under pressures up to 2.2 GPa show ferromagnetism is smoothly depressed and vanishes at a critical pressure $p_c = 1.4$ GPa. Near the ferromagnetic critical point superconductivity is enhanced. Upper-critical field measurements under pressure show $B_{c2}(0)$ attains remarkably large values, which provides solid evidence for spin-triplet superconductivity over the whole pressure range. The obtained $p-T$ phase diagram reveals superconductivity is closely conne…
Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies were performed in the recently discovered UCoGe, in which the ferromagnetic and superconducting (SC) transitions were reported to occur at $T_{\rm Curie} \sim 3$ K and $T_S \sim 0.8$ K (N. T. Huy {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99} (2007) 067006), in order to investigate the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity as well as the normal-state and SC properties from a microscopic point of view. From the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and Knight-shift measurements, we confirmed that fe…
We present high field magnetoresistance, Hall effect and thermopower measurements in the Ising-type ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Magnetic field is applied along the easy magnetization $c$ axis of the orthorhombic crystal. In the different experimental probes we observed five successive anomalies at $H \approx 4$, 9, 12, 16, and 21~T. Magnetic quantum oscillations were detected both in resistivity and thermoelectric power. At most of the anomalies, significant changes of the oscillation frequencies and the effective masses have been observed indicating successive Fermi surface instabilit…
We have investigated the impact of Ru substitution for Co on the behavior of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe by performing x-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements on polycrystalline samples of the $\mathrm{UCo}_{1-x}\mathrm{Ru}_{x}\mathrm{Ge}$ series ($0\geq x\leq0.9$). The initial Ru substitution up to $x\approx0.1$ leads to a simultaneous sharp increase of the Curie temperature and spontaneous magnetization up to maximum values of $T_{\mathrm{C}}=8.6 K$ and $M_{\mathrm{S}}=0.1 μ_{\mathrm{B}}$ per formula unit, respectively, whereas super…
It has been observed that the low temperature magnetoresistance behaviour in polycrystalline colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganites differ significantly from the single crystals. The polycrystalline samples show large magnetoresistance at temperatures much below the ferromagnetic transition temperature where the magnetoresistance of single crystals is very small. This has conventionally been attributed to spin polarised tunnelling at the grain boundaries in polycrystalline samples. In this paper we show the existence of a variable range hopping behaviour in resistivity at low temperatures …
We report a study of polycrystalline samples of the family La1-xCdxMnO3+dwith different percentage of Mn4+ ions. X-rays diffraction, Iodometric titration, Raman, Magnetic and Electrical Resistivity measurements provide a general characterisation of the physical properties. Results are qualitatively similar to the ones found in Ca doped manganese perovskites. Key words: Cd, manganese perovskites, magnetoresistance, Raman, magnetic, resistivity
We report on a microscopic study of the evolution of ferromagnetism in the Ru substituted ferromagnetic superconductor (FM SC) UCoGe crystallizing in the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure. For that purpose, two single crystals with composition UCo0.97Ru0.03Ge and UCo0.88Ru0.12Ge have been prepared and characterized by magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements. Both compounds have been found to order ferromagnetically below TC = 6.5 K and 7.5 K, respectively, which is considerably higher than the TC = 3 K of the parent compound UCoGe. The higher va…
Dilute impurities and growth conditions can drastically affect the transport properties of TiSe$_2$, especially below the charge density wave transition. In this paper, we discuss the effects of cooling rate, annealing time and annealing temperature on the transport properties of TiSe$_2$: slow cooling of polycrystalline TiSe$_2$ post-synthesis drastically increases the low temperature resistivity, which is in contrast to the metallic behavior of single-crystalline TiSe$_2$ due to charge doping from the residual iodine transport agent. A logarithmic increase of resistivity upon cooling and neg…
We report bulk superconductivity at 2.5K in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound through the DC magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements. The synthesized LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm and Reitveld refined lattice parameters are a= 4.15(1)A and c=14.02(2)A. The lower critical field of Hc1= 40Oe, at temperature 2K is estimated through the low field magnetization measurements. The LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound showed metallic normal state electrical resistivity with residual resistivity value of 1.35mΩ-cm. The compound is type-II su…
We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, ρ(T), and magnetic penetration depth, λ(T), for polycrystalline samples of Eu_0.5K_0.5Fe_2As_2 with Tc=31 K. $ρ(T)$ follows a linear temperature dependence above T_c and bends over to a weaker temperature dependence around 150 K. The magnetic penetration depth, determined by radio frequency technique displays an unusual minimum around 4 K which is associated with short-range ordering of localized Eu3+ moments.
Temperature (T) dependence of 59Co-NMR Knight shifts K of Na0.3CoO2.1.3H2O has been studied, where samples of randomly oriented powder and aligned crystals have been used for the applied magnetic fields H // ab plane and H //c-axis, respectively. For both directions of H, the shift K decreases below the superconducting transition temperature Tc(H) with decreasing T, indicating that the superconducting electron pairs are in the singlet state. The upper critical fields Hc2(T) determined from the K(H)-T curves are found to be consistent with the values reported by the resistivity measurements for…
We have carried out a comprehensive study of the UCo1-xFexGe series across the entire range of compositions 0 <= x <= 1, and report the results of x-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity to uncover the T-x phase diagram. Substitution of Fe into UCoGe initially results in an increase in the Curie temperature and a rapid destruction of the superconductivity. Near x = 0.22, the ferromagnetic transition is suppressed to zero temperature at an apparent ferromagnetic itinerant electron quantum critical point, where the temperature dependence of the electrical resi…
The evolution of magnetic properties of isostructural and isoelectronic solid solutions of the superconducting itinerant 5f-electron ferromagnet UCoGe with antiferromagnet UIrGe was studied by magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements of a series of UCo1-xIrxGe compounds in polycrystalline and single crystalline form at various temperatures and magnetic fields. Both the weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity in UCoGe were found to have vanished already for very low Ir substitution for Co x = 0.02. The antiferromagnetism of UIrGe is gradually su…
We present experimental evidence of incoherent Kondo scattering as the source of resistivity minima in bulk polycrystalline and nanocrystalline Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The temperature dependence of thermopower shows a positive maximum at high temperature followed by a negative minimum at low temperature, with the sign inversion occurring at a much higher temperature than $T_K$. Moreover, we observe little correlation between TK and intersite coupling strength given by $θ_{CW}$. We describe the temperature dependence of thermopower and resistivity within the framework of crystal field excitation in …
Specific heat experiments on a well-characterized polycrystalline sample of the BiS2 based superconductor Bi4O4S3 revealed that it shows a crear specific heat anomaly at about Tc = 4.4 K, consistent with Tc from the resistivity and dc susceptibility. This observation indicates the superconductivity of Bi4O4S3 to be bulk in nature.
We report the synthesis, electronic properties, and electronic structure of LaIrSi-type BaPtP with a noncentrosymmetric cubic crystal structure. Electrical resistivity and heat capacity data taken by using polycrystalline samples indicated that BaPtP is a metal, which was further supported by first principles calculations. A polycrystalline sample of BaPtP showed a zero resistivity below 0.2 K due to the superconducting transition. The first principles calculation results indicated that the spin splitting at around the Fermi energy is large in BaPtP. These results suggest that BaPtP is likely …
Polycrystalline rhodium(IV) oxide perovskite SrRhO3 was obtained by high-pressure synthesis techniques, followed by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat. The title compound has five 4d-electrons per perovskite unit and shows Fermi-liquid behavior in its electrical resistivity. The magnetic susceptibility is large [chi(300K) \~1.1*10^{-3} emu/mol-Rh] and proportional to 1/T^2 (< 380 K), while there is no magnetic long-range order above 1.8 K. The specific heat measurements indicate a probable magnetic contribution below ~ 15 K, which is not pred…
We report the resistivity, magnetization and 19^F NMR results in polycrystalline sample of SmFeAsO_(0.86)F_(0.14). The resistivity and the magnetization data show a sharp drop at 48 K indicating the superconducting transition. The nuclear spin-lattice rate (1/T_1) and spin-spin relaxation rate (1/T_2) clearly show the existence of a structural phase transition near 163 K in the sample which also undergo superconducting transition. This finding creates interest to explore whether this is unique for only Sm based systems or it is also present in other rare-earth based 1111 superconductors.
Polycrystalline La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation on single crystal (100) yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates to investigate the mechanism of magneto-transport in a granular manganite. Different degrees of granularity is achieved by using the deposition temperature (T$_{D}$) of 700 and 800 $^{0}$C. Although no significant change in magnetic order temperature (T$_C$) and saturation magnetization is seen for these two types of films, the temperature and magnetic field dependence of their resistivity ($ρ$(T, H)) is strikingly dissimi…
In this work the charge transport properties of charge ordered (CO) La1-xCaxMnO3 (LCMO) (x= 0.55, 0.67) epitaxial thin films and polycrystals are discussed following the recent controversy of localised electron states vs. weakly or de- localised charge density wave (CDW) states in CO manganites. The transport properties were investigated by current vs. voltage, direct current resistivity vs. temperature, local activation energy vs. temperature, magnetoresistance and admittance spectroscopy measurements, which all indicated a localised electronic structure in the single CO phase. Delocalised ch…
The iron oxyarsenide TbFeAsO0.85 was synthesized by a high-pressure method. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was obtained and characterized by measurements of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity. Bulk superconductivity with Tc of 42 K was clearly established without an F doping usually conducted to tune on superconductivity in the iron oxypnictide.
We investigate the temperature dependence of the resistivity and magnetoresistance of a polycrystalline $Sr_2CoMoO_{6-δ}$ film deposited on (100)-$SrTiO_3$ substrate prepared by the pulsed laser deposition method. X-ray diffraction, Raman and magnetoresistance results demonstrate clearly the coexistence of a ferromagnetic metallic and an antiferromagnetic (or paramagnetic) insulating domain. Percolative transition between these two phases as the temperature varies, which is believed to induce a metal-insulator transition at around $T_C$, has been directly observed in our measurements of the te…
We have synthesized polycrystalline samples of Pt-substituted SrFe2As2 and measured the temperature dependence of magnetization and electrical resistivity. We have observed the superconducting transition at Tc = 17 K with the maximum shielding volume fraction at x = 0.125 in Sr(Fe1-xPtx)2As2. It is found that the maximum Tc depends on the substituted element, so it is important to substitute various elements to explore new iron-based superconductors with higher Tc.
A polycrystalline sample of YNiGe3, being a non-magnetic isostructural counterpart to the unconventional pressure-induced superconductor CeNiGe3, was studied by means of specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements at temperatures down to 360 mK and in magnetic fields up to 500 Oe. The compound was found to exhibit an ambient-pressure superconductivity below Tc = 0.46 K. The superconducting state in YNiGe3 is destroyed by magnetic field of the order of 500 Oe.
We report the exchange bias (EB) effect along with tunneling magnetoresistance (MR) in polycrystalline La_{0.88}Sr_{0.12}CoO_3. Analogous to the shift in the magnetic hysteresis loop along the field (H)-axis a shift is clearly observed in the MR-H curve when the sample is cooled in a static magnetic field. Training effect (TE) is a significant manifestation of EB effect which describes the decrease of EB effect when sample is successively field-cycled at a particular temperature. We observe TE in the shift of the MR-H curve which could be interpreted by the spin configurational relaxation mode…
A high quality superconducting Li$_{0.68}$NbO$_2$ polycrystalline sample was synthesized by deintercalation of Li ions from Li$_{0.93}$NbO$_2$. The field dependent resistivity and specific heat were measured down to 0.5 K. The upper critical field $H_{c2} (T)$ is deduced from the resistivity data and $H_{c2}(0)$ is estimated to be $\sim 2.98$ T. A notable specific heat jump is observed at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c \sim 5.0$ K at zero field. Below $T_c$, the electronic specific heat shows a thermal activated behavior and agrees well with the theoretical result of the BCS s…
The resistivity and thermopower of polycrystalline (Na,Ca)Co_2O_4 were measured and analyzed. Both the quantities increase with x, suggesting that the carrier density is decreased by the substitutions of Ca^{2+} for Na^{+}. Considering that the temperature dependence of the resistivity show a characteristic change with x, the conduction mechanism is unlikely to come from a simple electron-phonon scattering. As a reference for NaCo_2O_4, single crystals of a two-dimensional Co oxide (Bi,Pb)_2M_3Co_2O_9 (M=Sr and Ba) were studied. The Pb substitution decreases the resistivity, leaving the thermo…
We report the Hall resistivity, $ρ_{xy}$ of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ for four different fluorine concentrations from the onset of superconductivity through the collapse of the structural phase transition. For the two more highly-doped samples, $ρ_{xy}$ is linear in magnetic field up to 50 T with only weak temperature dependence, reminiscent of a simple Fermi liquid. For the lightly-doped samples with $x<0.15$, we find a low temperature regime characterized $ρ_{xy}(H)$ being both non-linear in magnetic field and strongly temperature dependent even though the Hall angle is small. T…
We report the temperature-pressure (T-P) phase diagram of CePt2In7 single crystals, especially the pressure evolution of the antiferromagnetic order and the emergence of superconductivity, which have been studied by electrical resistivity and ac calorimetry under nearly hydrostatic environments. Compared with its polycrystalline counterpart, bulk superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetism in a much narrower pressure region. The possible existence of textured superconductivity and local quantum criticality also are observed in CePt2In7, exhibiting a remarkable similarity with CeRhIn5.
Results of low temperature magnetoresistance ($Δρ/ρ$) and isothermal magnetization (M) measurements on polycrystalline ferromagnetic (T_C close to 300 K) natural multilayers, LaMn_{2+x}Ge_{2-y}Si_y, are reported. It is found that the samples with large residual resistivity ratio, $ρ(300K)/ρ(4.2K)$, exhibit large positive magnetoresistance at high magnetic fields. The Kohler's rule is not obeyed in these alloys. In addition, at 4.5 K, there is a tendency towards linear variation of $Δρ/ρ$ with magnetic field with increasing $ρ(300K)/ρ(4.2K$); however, the field dependence of $Δρ/ρ$ does not tra…
The charge transport mechanism and the macroscopic dielectric constant in polycrystalline device materials commonly exhibit several components such as electrode-sample interface, grain boundary and bulk contributions. In order to gain precise understanding of the functionality of polycrystalline electroceramic device materials it is essential to deconvolute these contributions. The paradigm of functional thermistor ceramics based on thick film spinel manganates has been studied by temperature dependent alternating current impedance spectroscopy. Three typical relaxation phenomena were detected…
We report the occurrence of superconductivity in polycrystalline samples of ZrTe3 at 5.2 K temperature at ambient pressure. The superconducting state coexists with the charge density wave (CDW) phase, which sets in at 63K. The intercalation of Cu or Ag, does not have any bearing on the superconducting transition temperature but suppresses the CDW state. The feature of CDW anomaly in these compounds is clearly seen in the DC magnetization data. Resistivity data is analysed to estimate the relative loss of carriers and reduction in the nested Fermi surface area upon CDW formation in the ZrTe3 an…
Recently, transition-metal-based kagome metals have aroused much research interest as a novel platform to explore exotic topological quantum phenomena. Here we report on the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of a bilayer kagome lattice compound V3Sb2. The polycrystalline V3Sb2 samples were synthesized by conventional solid-state-reaction method in a sealed quartz tube at temperatures below 850 Celsius degree. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and resistivity revealed consistently a density-wave-like transition at Tdw ~ 160 K with a large thermal hysteresis, even though some s…
We report measurements of the resistivity in the ferromagnetic state of epitaxial thin films of La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} and the low temperature specific heat of a polycrystalline La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}MnO_{3}. The resistivity below 100 K can be well fitted by ρ- ρ_{o} = E ω_{s}/sinh^{2}(\hbar ω_{s}/2k_{B}T) with \hbar ω_{s}/k_{B} \simeq 100 K and E being a constant. Such behavior is consistent with small-polaron coherent motion which involves a relaxation due to a soft optical phonon mode. The specific heat data also suggest the existence of such a phonon mode. The present results thus provide evidenc…
In this study, we performed high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements of polycrystalline FeSe in the pressure range of 1-16.0 GPa at temperatures of 4-300 K. A precise evaluation of Tc from zero-resistivity temperatures revealed that Tc shows a slightly distorted dome-shaped curve, with maximum Tc (30 K) at 6 GPa, which is lower than a previously reported Tc value (~37 K). With the application of pressure, the temperature dependence of resistivity above Tc changes dramatically to a linear dependence; a non-Fermi-liquid-like "high-Tc" phase appears above 3 GPa. We found a striking corre…
We report electron-spin resonance measurements in polycrystalline samples of (Gd_{1-x}Y_{x})_2PdSi_{3}. We observe the onset of a broadening of the linewidth and of a decrease of the resonance field at approximately twice the Neel temperature in the paramagnetic state, this characteristic temperature coincides with the electrical resistivity minimum. The high-temperature behaviour of the linewidth is governed by a strong bottleneck effect.
RuP single crystals of MnP-type orthorhombic structure were synthesized by the Sn flux method. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the compound experiences two structural phase transitions, which are further confirmed by enormous anomalies shown in temperature-dependent resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Particularly, the resistivity drops monotonically upon temperature cooling below the second transition, indicating that the material shows metallic behavior, in sharp contrast with the insulating ground state of polycrystalline samples. Optical conductivity m…
Resistivity measurements were carried out up to 8 GPa on single crystal and polycrystalline samples of CeCu2Si2 from differing sources in the homogeneity range. The anisotropic response to current direction and small uniaxial stresses was explored, taking advantage of the quasi-hydrostatic environment of the Bridgman anvil cell. It was found that both the superconducting transition temperature Tc and the normal state properties are very sensitive to uniaxial stress, which leads to a shift of the valence instability pressure Pv and a small but significant change in Tc for different orientations…
Transport and magnetic studies on polycrystalline samples of SrFe1-xCoxO3-d have been carried out to investigate the relationship between the magnetic structure and the anomalous Hall resistivity rH. The hysteretic behavior of the magnetization observed in the measurements with varying temperature T up and then down after zero field cooling indicates that the system has the reentrant spin-glass phase, which is supported by the increasing width of the magnetic reflections observed by neutron diffraction with decreasing T below the Curie temperature TC. Detailed analyses of the observed Hall res…
Polycrystalline samples of Ce(Cu$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$Ge$_2$ were investigated by means of electrical resistivity $ρ$($T$), magnetic susceptibility $χ$($T$), specific heat $C$$_p$($T$) and thermo electric power $S$($T$) measurements. The long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, which set in at $T$$_N$ = 4.1 K in CeCu$_2$Ge$_2$, is suppressed by non-iso-electronic cobalt (Co) doping at a critical value of the concentration $x$$_c$ = 0.6, accompanied by non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior inferred from the power law dependence of heat capacity and susceptibility i.e. $C$($T$)/$T$ and $χ$($T$) $\propto…
Single crystals of $R$Cd$_{3}$P$_{3}$ ($R$ = La and Ce) have been investigated by magnetization, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and specific heat. Magnetization measurements of CeCd$_{3}$P$_{3}$ demonstrate clear quasi-2D magnetic behavior. Electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient measurements suggest that $R$Cd$_{3}$P$_{3}$ compounds are low carrier density metallic systems, in strong contrast to an earlier study of polycrystalline material. Specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements of CeCd$_{3}$P$_{3}$ reveal a high temperature (structural) phase transition at $T_{s…
Weyl fermions scattering from a random Coulomb potential are predicted to exhibit resistivity versus temperature $ρ\space α\space T^{-4}$ in a single particle model. Here we show that, in closed environment-grown polycrystalline samples of $Y_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7}$, $ρ= ρ_{0} T^{-4}$ over four orders of magnitude in $ρ$. While the measured prefactor, $ρ_{0}$, is obtained from the model using reasonable materials parameters, the $T^{-4}$ behavior extends far beyond the model's range of applicability. In particular, the behavior extends into the low-temperature, high-resistivity region where the Ioffe-…
We report the results of our investigations on a polycrystalline sample of Lu$_2$Ir$_3$Si$_5$ which crystallizes in the U$_2$Co$_3$Si$_5$ type structure (Ibam). These investigations comprise powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and high temperature (120-300 K) heat capacity studies. Our results reveal that the sample undergoes a superconducting transition below 3.5 K. It also undergoes a first order phase transition between 150-250 K as revealed by an upturn in the resistivity, a diasmagnetic drop in the magnetic susceptibility and a large anomaly (20-30 J/…
Measurements of specific heat between 80 mK to 4 K and electrical resistivity between 80 mK to 10 K were carried out for polycrystalline CePt3Si samples cut into small pieces (typically $\sim $10 mg). In the specific heat measurements, we observed an antiferromagnetic transition jump at TN = 2.2 K for all the samples, while the heights have large variations. As regards superconductivity, we observed two distinct transition jumps at Tcl $\sim$ 0.45 K and Tch $\sim$ 0.75 K, which were the same for all the samples. From the measurements of specific heat and resistivity, systematic relations were …
We report electrical, magnetic, magnetodielectric and magnetoabsorption properties of a polycrystalline GaFeO3. The resistivity measurement shows that the sample is highly insulating below 200 K and the resistivity above 200 K obey the Arrhenius law with an activation energy of Ea = 0.67 eV. An anomaly occurs in the temperature dependence of permittivity (e) near the ferrimagnetic transition temperature (TC = 228 K) in a zero magnetic field and it is suppressed under H = 60 mT which indicates a possible magnetoelectric coupling in GaFeO3 with a fractional change of de/e = -1.8% at 60 mT around…
