In this work the charge transport properties of charge ordered (CO) La1-xCaxMnO3 (LCMO) (x= 0.55, 0.67) epitaxial thin films and polycrystals are discussed following the recent controversy of localised electron states vs. weakly or de- localised charge density wave (CDW) states in CO manganites. The transport properties were investigated by current vs. voltage, direct current resistivity vs. temperature, local activation energy vs. temperature, magnetoresistance and admittance spectroscopy measurements, which all indicated a localised electronic structure in the single CO phase. Delocalised charge anomalies observed previously may be restricted to phase separated materials.
In this communication the enhancement of low temperature magnetoresistance in polycrystalline La1-xCaxMnO3 manganites is discussed. It is shown that so-called grain boundary effects seem to be the simplest and natural explanation of this phenomenon.
$La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ samples were prepared in nano- and polycrystalline forms by sol-gel and solid state reaction methods, respectively, and structurally characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties determined by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements are discussed. The magnetocaloric effect in this nanocrystalline manganite is spread over a broader temperature interval than in the polycrystalline case. The relative cooling power of the poly- and nanocrystalline manganites is used to evaluate a possible application for magnetic cooling below room temp…
A reversible structural transition of an epitaxial La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 film deposited on the LaAlO3 substrate has been investigated by means of in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) and electron diffraction, combined with image and diffraction calculations. We observe that the crystallographic symmetry of the film can be lowered via electron beam irradiation, leading to a rhombohedral-monoclinic transition. This transition can be attributed to the cooperating effect of the mismatch stress and the irradiation-induced thermal-stress.
Transport characterizations of epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films in the thickness range 5-40 nm and 25-410 K temperature interval have been accurately collected. We show that taking into account polaronic effects allows to achieve the best ever fitting of the transport curves in the whole temperature range. The Current Carriers Density Collapse picture accurately accounts for the properties variation across the metal-insulator-transition. The electron-phonon coupling parameter estimations are in a good agreement with theoretical predictions. The results promote a clear and straightforward qu…
It has been observed that the low temperature magnetoresistance behaviour in polycrystalline colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganites differ significantly from the single crystals. The polycrystalline samples show large magnetoresistance at temperatures much below the ferromagnetic transition temperature where the magnetoresistance of single crystals is very small. This has conventionally been attributed to spin polarised tunnelling at the grain boundaries in polycrystalline samples. In this paper we show the existence of a variable range hopping behaviour in resistivity at low temperatures …
Ultra-thin films of the electron doped manganite La$_{0.8}$Ce$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$ were grown in a layer-by-layer growth mode on SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates by pulsed laser interval deposition. High structural quality and surface morphology was confirmed by a combination of synchrotron based x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements confirm the presence of Ce$^{+4}$ and Mn$^{+2}$ ions. In addition, the electron doping signature was corroborated by Hall effect measurements. All grown films show ferromagnetic ground state as revealed by both XMCD…
Exchange bias has been studied in a series of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 / La1/3Ca2/3MnO3 bilayers grown on (001) SrTiO3 substrates by ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The high crystalline quality of the samples and interfaces has been verified using high-resolution X-ray diffractometry and Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectroscopy. The dependence of exchange bias on the thickness of the antiferromagnetic layer has been investigated. A critical value for the onset of the hysteresis loop shift has been determined. An antiferromagnetic anisotropy const…
We discovered an unprecedented magnitude of the 1/f noise near the Curie temperature Tc in low-Tc manganites. The scaling behavior of the 1/f noise and the resistance provides strong evidence of the percolation nature of the ferromagnetic transition in the polycrystalline samples. The step-like changes of the resistance with temperature, observed for single crystals, suggest that the size of the ferromagnetic domains depends on the size of crystallites.
The effects of dc excitation current on the current-voltage curves of polycrystalline samples of Nd0.5Ca0.5Mn0.96Cr0.04O3 were investigated. The experimental results show that an abrupt jump of the voltage is concomitant with a huge increase in the temperature of the sample. A simple model and estimates for Joule self-heating effects support the experimental data. Moreover, the data strongly suggest that both the current localization in the metallic paths and local Joule self-heating effects are essential ingredients to understand the current-induced phase transition in phase-separated mangani…
We report a detailed study of step-like metamagnetic transitions in the magnetization and resistivity of polycrystalline Pr0.5Ca0.5Mn0.95Co0.05O3. The steps have a sudden onset below a critical temperature, are extremely sharp (width < 0.2 mT), and occur at critical fields which are linearly dependent on the absolute value of the cooling field in which the sample is prepared. Similar transitions are also observed at low temperature in non-Co doped manganites, including single crystal samples. These data show that the steps are an intrinsic property, qualitatively different from either previous…
This paper reports the observations of long-time relaxation, aging, and temperature memory behaviors of resistance and magnetization in the ferromagnetic state of a polycrystalline La0.7Ca0.3Mn0.925Ti0.075O3 compound. The observed glassy dynamics of the electrical transport appears to be magnetically originated and has a very close association with the magnetic glassiness of the sample. Phase separation and strong correlation between magnetic interactions and electronic conduction play the essential roles in producing such a resistive glassiness. We explain the observed effects in terms of a c…
The ferromagnetic phase in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 manganite is completely spin polarized (100%) at room temperature. This is demonstrated on high quality epitaxial films by Spin-Polarized Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. The films consist of a highly homogeneous ferromagnetic (FM) phase in which minority paramagnetic (PM) defects are embedded (less than 1% for best films). PM defects exhibit featureless tunneling spectroscopic characteristics and an insulating-like conductance. FM phase exhibit metallic behavior and strongly nonlinear characteristics. Deconvolution of the spectroscopic curves for the FM…
Electrical transport properties of RNiO3 (R= Pr, Nd, Sm) thin films grown by pulse laser deposition have been studied. RNiO3 films grow in (100) direction on LaAlO3 (100) substrate. Unlike in polycrystalline solid, PrNiO3 film showed metallic behavior. The first order metal to insulator transition observed in polycrystalline solids is suppressed in RNiO3 films. The effect of lattice strain in the films influensing the transport properties has been studied by varying the thickness of PrNiO3 film on LaAlO3 and also by growing them on SrTiO3 and sapphire substrates. Deviation in the transport pro…
The effect of x-rays on an orbital and charge ordered epitaxial film of a Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ is presented. As the film is exposed to x-rays, the antiferromagnetic response increases and concomitantly the conductivity of the film improve. These results are discussed in terms of a persistent x-ray induced doping, leading to a modification of the magnetic structure. This effect allows writing electronic and magnetic domains in the film and represents a novel way of manipulating magnetism.
The effect of gold capping on magnetic and transport properties of optimally doped manganite thin films is studied. An extraordinary suppression of conductivity and magnetic properties occurs in epitaxial (001) La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO_3 (LSMO) films grown on SrTiO_3 upon deposition of 2 nm of Au: in the case of ultrathin films of LSMO (4 nm thick) the resistivity increases by four orders of magnitude while the Curie temperature decreases by 180 K. Zero-field 55Mn nuclear magnetic resonance reveals a significant reduction of ferromagnetic double-exchange mechanism in manganite films upon the gold cap…
A giant low-frequency, in-plane dielectric constant, eps~10^6, for epitaxial thin films of Ca(1-x)La(x)MnO(3) (x<=0.03) was observed over a broad temperature range, 4K <= T 300K. This phenomenon is attributed to an internal barrier-layer capacitor (IBLC) structure, with insulating boundaries between semiconducting grains. The room-temperature eps increases substantially with electron (La) doping. The measured values of eps exceed those of conventional two-phase IBLC materials based on (Ba,Sr)TiO(3) as well as recently discovered CaCu(3)Ti(4)O(12) and (Li,Ti) doped NiO.
We have performed a muon spin rotation study on polycrystalline samples of electron-doped layered manganites, La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ (0.4< x<1), in order to investigate the local magnetic structure and spin dynamics. Our results provide evidence for phase separation into A-type antiferromagnetic and charge-ordered phases for x=0.52 and spin freezing at low temperatures (T<100K) for 0.52<x<0.75. A new phase diagram which includes this spin freezing region is proposed.
Atomically flat, epitaxial, and stoichiometric thin films of the electronically phase separated compound (La$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$)$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ were grown on as-received and treated NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates by fine tuning of oxygen pressure during deposition. Optimal thin films with step flow growth mode show superior physical properties compared to thin films grown in off-optimal oxygen pressures, {\em viz.} the highest maximum temperature coefficient of resistance, the highest peak-resistivity temperature, and reduced coercive fields. Transport, magnetization, and x-ray diffractio…
The single layered manganite Pr$_{0.22}$Sr$_{1.78}$MnO$_4$ undergoes structural transition from high temperature tetragonal phase to low temperature orthorhombic phase below room temperature. The orthorhombic phase was reported to have two structural variants with slightly different lattice parameters and Mn-3$d$ levels show orbital ordering within both the variants, albeit having mutually perpendicular ordering axis. In addition to orbital ordering, the orthorhombic variants also order antiferromagnetically with different Néel temperatures. Our magnetic investigation on the polycrystalline sa…
Modulation of charge carrier dynamics and hence electrical conductivity of solids by photoexcitation has been a rich field of research with numerous applications. Similarly, electric and magnetic field assisted enhancement of conductivity are of fundamental importance and technological use. Hole doped manganites of the type (A$_{1-x}$B$_{x})$MnO$_{3}$, where A and B are rare and alkaline earth metals respectively have the distinction of showing all three effects. Here we establish the complementarity of the electric, magnetic and photon fields in driving an insulator-metal transition in epitax…
X-Ray diffraction, ac susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements were performed in order to investigate the effect of Ag substitution for Pr in the polycrystalline Pr$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$MnO$_3$ (0.0$\leq$x$\leq$0.25) manganites. The XRD results show that the samples crystallize in the O'-orthorhombic structure with a cooperative Jahn-Teller deformation. We give evidence that the Ag$^{+}$ is not substituted at the Pr$^{3+}$ site in the PrMnO$_{3}$ structure. The increase of $T_{C}$ up to 130 K is suggested to be due to further oxidation of manganite grains by the oxygen released from the …
Contradictory reports about the electronic and magnetic behavior of bulk Nd0:5Ba0:5MnO3 with uniform disorder exist in the literature. In this work, we investigate the thin films of Nd0:5Ba0:5MnO3, grown by pulsed laser deposition. The success of epitaxial growth in a layer-by-layer mode and high quality of the films have been confirmed by in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, X-ray reflectivity, and, X-ray diffraction. These films are found to be insulting and exhibit spin-glass behavior at low temperatures. The study offers an opportunity to tune the c…
Oxygen isotope effects on the transport properties have been studied in high-quality epitaxial thin films of La_{0.75}Ca_{0.25}MnO_{3} and Nd_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. In the paramagnetic state, the resistivity can be well fitted by ρ(T) = (A/\sqrt{T})\exp(E_ρ/k_{B}T) with the parameters A and E_{a} depending strongly on the oxygen isotope mass. The resistivity below 80 K almost perfectly follows ρ= ρ_{o}+ Bω_{s}/\sinh^{2}(\hbarω_{s}/2k_{B}T) with \hbarω_{s}/k_{B} \sim 100 K. Both ρ_{o} and B increase by about 15(3)% upon raplacing $^{16}$O by $^{18}$O. The results provide quantitative constraints…
We study the influence of the Joule effect on the non-linear behavior of the transport I-V curves in polycrystalline samples of the manganite Pr0.8Ca0.2MnO3 by using the crystalline unit cell parameters as an internal thermometer in X-ray and neutron diffraction. We develop a simple analytical model to estimate the temperature profile in the samples. Under the actual experimental conditions we show that the internal temperature gradient or the difference between the temperature of the sample and that of the thermal bath are at the origin of the non-linearity observed in the I-V curves. Consequ…
We have investigated magnetic, electrical and thermal transport properties (Seebeck effect and thermal conductivity) of LaSr$_{2}$Mn$_{2-y}$Cr$_{y}$O$_{7}$ polycrystalline samples ($y$=0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6). The Cr$^{3+}$ substitution for Mn$^{3+}$ sites causes a removal of $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital of $e_g$-electron resulting in a volume shrinkage of lattice. Magnetic measurements reveal the appearance of a glassy behavior for Cr-doped samples, accompanied by both a collapse of the A-type antiferromagnetic structure and the growth of ferromagnetic clusters. Cr-doping effect on electrical transpo…
Some recent experimental studies show the invisibility of antiferromagnetic transition in the cases of manganites when their particle size is reduced to nanometer scale. In complete contrast to these cases, we have observed the signature of antiferromagnetic transition in the magnetocaloric properties of nanocrystalline La$_{0.125}$Ca$_{0.875}$MnO$_{3}$ of average particle size 70 and 60 nm similar to its polycrystalline bulk form. The system exhibit inverse magnetocaloric effect in its polycrystalline and nanocrystalline form. An extra ferromagnetic phase is stabilized at low temperature for …
We report the synthesis, (micro)structural, magneto-transport and magnetization of polycrystalline La2/3Ca1/3MnO3:Agx composites with x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4. The temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) near ferromagnetic (FM) transition is increased significantly with addition of Ag. The FM transition temperature (TFM) is also increased slightly with Ag addition. Magneto-transport measurements revealed that magneto-resistance MR is found to be maximum near TFM. Further the increased MR of up to 60% is seen above 300 K for higher silver added samples in an applied field of 7 Tesla. …
We prepared high epitaxial thin films of the compound Sr_2FeMoO_6 with narrow rocking curves by pulsed laser deposition. The diagonal and nondiagonal elements of the resistivity tensor were investigated at temperatures from 4 K up to room temperature in magnetic fields up to 8 T. An electronlike ordinary Hall effect and a holelike anomalous Hall contribution are observed. Both coefficients have reversed sign compared to the colossal magnetoresistive manganites. We found at 300 K an ordinary Hall coefficent of -1.87x10^{-10} m^3/As, corresponding to a nominal charge carrier density of four elec…
We report measurements of the resistivity in the ferromagnetic state of epitaxial thin films of La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} and the low temperature specific heat of a polycrystalline La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}MnO_{3}. The resistivity below 100 K can be well fitted by ρ- ρ_{o} = E ω_{s}/sinh^{2}(\hbar ω_{s}/2k_{B}T) with \hbar ω_{s}/k_{B} \simeq 100 K and E being a constant. Such behavior is consistent with small-polaron coherent motion which involves a relaxation due to a soft optical phonon mode. The specific heat data also suggest the existence of such a phonon mode. The present results thus provide evidenc…
Temperature- and magnetic field-dependent electrical noise and electrical resistivity measurements were carried out on epitaxial thin films of a large bandwidth La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and a disordered intermediate bandwidth (La0.5Pr0.2)Ba0.3MnO3 manganite system. The power spectraldensity was dominated by 1/f-noise. This 1/f-noise was observed to follow the overall temperature dependence of the resistivity. Moreover, in these compounds the magneto-noise effect was found to be of nearly the same magnitude as the magnetoresistance. This direct correlation between magneto-noise and magnetoresistance sugg…
We have studied electrical transport and magnetic properties of epitaxial La_0.66 Sr_0.33 Mn O_3 thin films grown on different substrates having different lattice strains induced by different film-substrate lattice-mismatch. Both electrical transport and magnetic properties exhibit strong correlation with Jahn-Teller strain. Our study shows a sufficiently large Jahn-Teller strain giving rise to distinct semi-conducting/insulating state in LSMO thin films even below the respective para-ferromagnetic Curie temperatutes Tc, which is in contradiction with the established phase diagram of Sr-doped …
In this paper, we report polarized optical microscopy and electrical transport studies of manganese oxides that reveal that the charge ordering transition in these compounds exhibits typical signatures of a martensitic transformation. We demonstrate that specific electronic properties of charge-ordered manganites stem from a combination of martensitic accommodation strain and effects of strong electron correlations. This intrinsic strain is strongly affected by the grain boundaries in ceramic samples. Consistently, our studies show a remarkable enhancement of low field magnetoresistance and th…
Thin films of strongly-correlated electron materials (SCEM) are often grown epitaxially on planar substrates and typically have anisotropic properties that are usually not captured by edge-mounted four-terminal electrical measurements, which are primarily sensitive to in-plane conduction paths. Accordingly, the correlated interactions in the out-of-plane (perpendicular) direction cannot be measured but only inferred. We address this shortcoming and show here an experimental technique in which the SCEM under study, in our case a 600 Angstrom-thick (La1-yPry)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LPCMO) film, serves a…
We report the study of magnetic and orbital order in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ epitaxial thin films grown on (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$-(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT) (011)$_c$. In a new experimental approach, the polarization and energy dependence of resonant soft x-ray scattering are used to reveal significant modifications of the magnetic order in the film as compared to the bulk, namely (i) a different magnetic ordering wave vector, (ii) a different magnetic easy axis and (iii) an additional magnetic reordering transition at low temperatures. These observations indicate a strong i…
Magnetic properties of polycrystalline Sm0.1Ca0.84Sr0.06MnO3 in pristine and metastable states have been investigated in wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. It was found that below Curie temperature TC = 105 K the pristine state exhibits phase separation comprising ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The metastable states with reduced magnetization were obtained by successive number of quick coolings of the sample placed in container with kerosene-oil mixture. By an increasing number of quick coolings (> 6) the long time relaxation appeared at 10 K and the magnetization rev…
In doped manganites, the strong electron-phonon coupling due to the Jahn-Teller effect localizes the conduction-band electrons as polarons. This results in polarons are carriers responsible for transport and ferromagnetic ordering rather than the bare eg electrons, and sequentially polaron exchange model is emerged for describing ferromagnetic ordering. In Pr0.7(Sr1-xCax)0.3MnO3(x=0.3-0.6) epitaxial thin films, for higher-temperature paramagnetic state and lower-temperature ferromagnetic state, both the temperature dependent transports present behaviors of small polaron; for paramagnetic-ferro…
We have studied the effect of metastable, irreversibility induced by repeated thermal cycles on the electric transport and magnetization of polycrystalline samples of La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.48\leq x \leq 0.55) close to charge ordering. With time and thermal cycling (T<300 K) there is an irreversible transformation of the low-temperature phase from a partially ferromagnetic and metallic to one that is less ferromagnetic and highly resistive for the composition close to charge ordering (x=050 and 0.52). Irrespective of the actual ground state of the compound, the effect of thermal cycling is towards an…
The effect of deposition oxygen pressure (P$_{O}$) on phase separation (PS) induced in epitaxial La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$/NdGaO$_{3}$(001) films was investigated. Fully oxygenated films grown at high P$_{O}$ are anisotropically strained. They exhibit PS over a wide temperature range, because of the large orthorhombicity of NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates. The paramagnetic insulator-to-ferromagnetic metal (FM) and FM-to-antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) transitions gradually shift to lower temperatures with decreasing PO. The AFI state is initially weakened (P$_{O}$ >= 30 Pa), but then becomes mo…
We report on the temperature and field dependence of resistance of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films over a wide temperature range and in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. The epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films were deposited by laser molecular beam epitaxy. High magnetic field magnetoresistance curves were fitted by the Brillouin function, which indicated the existence of magnetically polarized regions and the underlying hopping mechanism. The unsaturated magnetoconductance was the most striking finding observed in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. These observations can deepen the fundamental und…
Oxygen-isotope effects on the intrinsic resistivity have been studied in high-quality epitaxial thin films of La_{0.75}Ca_{0.25}MnO_{3} and Nd_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. We found that the residual resistivity ρ_{o} increases by about 15(3)% upon replacing ^{16}O by ^{18}O. This provides strong evidence for the presence of small or intermediate-size polarons in the metallic ferromagnetic state. Furthermore, the temperature dependent part of the resistivity at low temperatures consists of an AT^{4.5} term contributed from 2-magnon scattering, and a Bω_{s}/\sinh^{2}(\hbarω_{s}/2k_{B}T) term which aris…
Epitaxial La3/4Ca1/4MnO3/MgO(100) (LCMO) thin films show unusual rhombohedral (R-3c) structure with a new perovskite superstructure due to unique ordering of La and Ca at the A-site positions. Very sharp insulator-metal and para-ferromagnetic phase transitions at temperatures up to TMI ~ TC=295 K were observed. The ordered films were electronically homogeneous down to 1 nm scale as revealed by scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy. In contrast, orthorhombic and A-site disordered LCMO demonstrate broadened phase transitions as well as mesoscopic phase separation for T<<TC. The unique La/C…
Magnetic properties of polycrystalline CaMn1-xRuxO3 (x = 0 - 0.5) samples were investigated in the temperature range 4.2 - 250 K, under external magnetic field up to 15 kOe and under hydrostatic pressure up to 12 kbar. Transport properties of the samples with x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5 were also investigated under pressure up to 10 kbar. For x up to 0.4, the pressure was found to suppress ferromagnetic correlations and to increase the resistivity, while for x = 0.5 to act in the opposite way. While long ferromagnetic order is completely suppressed, in small clusters ferromagnetic correlations prob…
Polycrystalline La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation on single crystal (100) yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates to investigate the mechanism of magneto-transport in a granular manganite. Different degrees of granularity is achieved by using the deposition temperature (T$_{D}$) of 700 and 800 $^{0}$C. Although no significant change in magnetic order temperature (T$_C$) and saturation magnetization is seen for these two types of films, the temperature and magnetic field dependence of their resistivity ($ρ$(T, H)) is strikingly dissimi…
The transport and noise properties of Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} epitaxial thin films in the temperature range from room temperature to 160 K are reported. It is shown that both the broadband 1/f noise properties and the dependence of resistance on electric field are consistent with the idea of a collective electrical transport, as in the classical model of sliding charge density waves. On the other hand, the observations cannot be reconciled with standard models of charge ordering and charge melting. Methodologically, it is proposed to consider noise-spectra analysis as a unique tool for the ide…
Epitaxial thin films of LaCoO_{3} (E-LCO) exhibit ferromagnetic order with a transition temperature T_c = 85 K, while polycrystalline thin LaCoO_{3} films (P-LCO) remain paramagnetic. The temperature-dependent spin-state structure for both E-LCO and P-LCO was studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co L_{2,3} and O K edges. Considerable spectral redistributions over temperature are observed for P-LCO. The spectra for E-LCO, on the other hand, do not show any significant changes for temperatures between 30 K and 450 K at both edges, indicating that the spin state remains constant and th…
The low-energy excitations in the charge-ordered phase of polycrystalline La0.25Ca0.75MnO3 are explored by frequency-domain terahertz spectroscopy. In the frequency range from 4 cm^-1 to 700 cm^-1 (energies 0.4 meV to 90 meV) and at temperatures down to 5 K, we do not detect any feature that can be associated with the collective response of the spatially modulated charge continuum. In the antiferromagnetically ordered phase, broad absorption bands appear in the conductivity and permittivity spectra around 30 cm^-1 and 100 cm^-1 which are assigned to former acoustic phonons optically activated …
Transition metal oxides possess complex free energy surfaces with competing degrees of freedom. Photoexcitation allows shaping of such rich energy landscapes. In epitaxially strained $\mathrm{La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3}$, optical excitation with a sub-100 fs pulse above $2\ \mathrm{mJ/cm^2}$ leads to a persistent metallic phase below 100 K. Using single-shot optical and terahertz spectroscopy, we show that this phase transition is a multi-step process. We conclude that the phase transition is driven by partial charge order melting, followed by growth of the persistent metallic phase on longer tim…
An epitaxial heterojunction made of a p-type perovskite manganite La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 film and an n-type strontium titanate SrTiO3:Nb substrate has been fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition technique. The I - V characteristics and photovoltaic properties are measured under a UV light irradiation in a wide temperature range down to 10 K. It is found that the junction works as an efficient UV photodiode with a large external quantum efficiency of 28%. It is also demonstrated that the manganite film can be doped with a certain amount of holes by the photcarrier injection. The maximum surface hole…
Magneto optic measurements are a very powerful tool for investigating the polarization of a conduction band as a function of temperature and are used here to study the polarization of the mobile electrons in 50nm LSMO (x=0.3) strained thin films grown epitaxially on single crystalline (001) LaAlO3 (LAO) and (001) lattice matched substrate (LSAT). The magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) has been investigated in magnetic fields up to 0.5 T and over a temperature range (10 to 450 K). The MCD spectra of both the films show a peak at the band gap at around 3 eV and the peak is found to be shifted tow…
Variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy studies on single crystals and epitaxial thin films of hole-doped manganites, which show colossal magnetoresistance, have been done. We have investigated the variation of the density of states, at and near the Fermi energy ($E_f$), as a function of temperature. Simple calculations have been carried out, to find out the effect of temperature on the tunneling spectra and extract the variation of density of states with temperature, from the observed data. We also report here, atomic resolution images, on the single crystals and large…
Spatially resolved tunneling spectroscopic studies of colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite $\rm La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ (LCMO) epitaxial films on $\rm (LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(Sr_2AlTaO_6)_{0.7}$ substrate are investigated as functions of temperature, magnetic field and spin polarization by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Systematic surveys of the tunneling spectra taken with Pt/Ir tips reveal spatial variations on the length scale of a few hundred nanometers in the ferromagnetic state, which may be attributed to the intrinsic heterogeneity of the manganites due to their tendency towards …
The features of electronic structure of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, Pr0.8Sr0.2MnO3, and Pr0.6Sr0.4MnO3 polycrystalline films of different thickness have been investigated using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the range of 1.1-4.2 eV. The temperature behavior of the samples electrical resistance were also has been studied. It was found that films with high Sr content (0.3 and 0.4) act as high-temperature semiconductors, while the maximum in the temperature dependences of these films resistivity indicates the transition of the samples to the metallic state at some temperature TM-S, which is different f…
We report on the selective fabrication of high-quality Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and SrIrO$_3$ epitaxial thin films from a single polycrystalline Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ target by pulsed laser deposition. Using a combination of X-ray diffraction and photoemission spectroscopy characterizations, we discover that within a relatively narrow range of substrate temperature, the oxygen partial pressure plays a critical role in the cation stoichiometric ratio of the films, and triggers the stabilization of different Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases. Resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements taken at the Ir $L$-edge…
We present a detailed study of the polycrystalline perovskite manganites La0.67Ca0.33AlxMn1-xO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.5) at low temperatures and high magnetic fields, including electrical resistance, magnetization, ac susceptibility. The static magnetic susceptibility was also measured up to 1000 K. All the samples show colossal magnetoresistance behavior and the Curie temperatures decrease with Al doping. The data suggest the presence of correlated magnetic clusters near by the ferromagnetic transition. This appears to be a consequence of the structural and magnetic disorder created by the ran…
