Polycrystalline La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation on single crystal (100) yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates to investigate the mechanism of magneto-transport in a granular manganite. Different degrees of granularity is achieved by using the deposition temperature (T$_{D}$) of 700 and 800 $^{0}$C. Although no significant change in magnetic order temperature (T$_C$) and saturation magnetization is seen for these two types of films, the temperature and magnetic field dependence of their resistivity ($ρ$(T, H)) is strikingly dissimilar. While the $ρ$(T,H) of the 800 $^{0}$C film is comparable to that of epitaxial samples, the lower growth temperature leads to a material which undergoes insulator-to-metal transition at a temperature (T$_{P}$ $\approx$ 170 K) much lower than T$_C$. At T $\ll$ T$_P$, the resistivity is characterized by a minimum followed by ln $\emph{T}$ divergence at still lower temperatures. The high negative magnetoresistance ($\approx$ 20$%$) and ln $\emph{T}$ dependence below the minimum are explained on the basis of Kondo-type scattering from blocked Mn-spins in the intergranular material. Further, a striking feature of the T$_D$ = 700 $^{0}$C film is its two orders of magnitude larger anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) as compared to the AMR of epitaxial films. We attribute it to unquenching of the orbital angular momentum of 3d electrons of Mn ions in the intergranular region where crystal field is poorly defined.
In the present work, spontaneous magnetization is observed in the inverse magnetic susceptibility of La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{0.7}$Ba$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ compounds above $T_C$ up to a temperature $T^*$. From information gathered from neutron diffraction, dilatometry, and high-field magnetization data, we suggest that $T^*$ is related to the transition temperature of the low-temperature (high magnetic field) magnetic phase. In the temperature region between $T^*$ and $T_C$, the application of a magnetic field drives the system from the high-temperature to low-temperature magnetic phases,…
Recently the inverse magnetocaloric effect is observed for different compounds. However there is very rare for any manifestation of the effect to be seen in manganites. We have found inverse magnetocaloric effect in the case of polycrystalline La$_{0.125}$Ca$_{0.875}$MnO$_{3}$. Such phenomenon is attributed to the stabilization of antiferromagnetic state associated with inherent magnetic inhomogeneous phases for this compound.
$La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ samples were prepared in nano- and polycrystalline forms by sol-gel and solid state reaction methods, respectively, and structurally characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties determined by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements are discussed. The magnetocaloric effect in this nanocrystalline manganite is spread over a broader temperature interval than in the polycrystalline case. The relative cooling power of the poly- and nanocrystalline manganites is used to evaluate a possible application for magnetic cooling below room temp…
We observe the interesting magnetization and resistivity results in the orthorhombically distorted self doped manganite, La_{0.87}MnO_x. A significant irreversibility between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled resistivities as well as magnetization data is clearly observed up to a temperature which is well above the both paramagnetic to ferromagnetic (T_c) and metal to insulator transition (T_{MI}) temperatures. In the ferromagnetically ordered and metallic states the magnetotransport results suggest the influence of domain wall dynamics. Interesting scenario of memory effects through the doma…
We report the temperature and magnetic field dependence of transport properties in epitaxial films of the manganite La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ in the overdoped region of the phase diagram for $x > 0.5$, where a charge--ordered (CO) and an antiferromagnetic (AF) phase are present. Resistivity, magnetoresistance and angular dependence of magnetoresistance were measured in the temperature interval $4.2 ~\mathrm{K} < T < 300 ~\mathrm{K}$, for three concentrations $x = 0.52, 0.58$ and $0.75$ and in magnetic fields up to 5 T. The semiconductor/insulator--like behavior in zero field was observed in …
The dc magnetization (M) and electrical resistivity (ρ) as functions of magnetic field and temperature are reported for a series of lightly electron dopedCa(1-x)La(x)MnO(3) (0<=x<=0.10) specimens for which magnetization [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 61}, 14319 (2000)] and scattering studies [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 68}, 134440 (2003)] indicate an inhomogeneous magnetic ground state composed of ferromagnetic (FM) droplets embedded in a G-type antiferromagnetic matrix. A change in the magnetic behavior near x=0.02 has been suggested to be the signature of a crossover to a long-ranged spin-canted phase. The data …
Measurements of Seebeck effect in 0 and 1.5 T and Nernst coefficient in 0.3,0.9 and 1.8 T as a function of temperature on a polycrystalline sample Sm0.55Sr0.45MnO3 are presented. The data point out conclusively that an increase inboth the carrier density and the mobility of the charge carriers is responsible for the observed colossal magnetoresistance
Some recent experimental studies show the invisibility of antiferromagnetic transition in the cases of manganites when their particle size is reduced to nanometer scale. In complete contrast to these cases, we have observed the signature of antiferromagnetic transition in the magnetocaloric properties of nanocrystalline La$_{0.125}$Ca$_{0.875}$MnO$_{3}$ of average particle size 70 and 60 nm similar to its polycrystalline bulk form. The system exhibit inverse magnetocaloric effect in its polycrystalline and nanocrystalline form. An extra ferromagnetic phase is stabilized at low temperature for …
We report the magnetic and electrical transport properties of the bulk polycrystalline NGSMO (x ~ 0.0, 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.16, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35 and 0.42) synthesized by solid state reaction at 1350 degree Celsius. All the samples are single phase and have grain size ~1-2 micrometer. The variation of magnetic and magnetotransport properties as a function of the variance sigma^2 show some interesting trends. As sigma^2 increases, the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) transition shows a gradual decrease and broadening, while the decrease in insulator metal transition (IMT) is accompanied b…
We present evidence for the coexistence of ferromagnetic metallic and charge ordered insulating phases in strained thin films of La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ at low temperatures. Such a phase separated state is confirmed using low temperature magnetic force microscopy and magnetotransport measurements. This phase separated state is not observed in the bulk form of this compound and is caused by the structural inhomogeneities due to the non-uniform distribution of strain in the film. The strain weakens the low temperature ferromagnetic metallic state and a charge ordered insulator is formed at…
Using ultrafast optical spectroscopy, we show that polaronic behavior associated with interfacial antiferromagnetic order is likely the origin of tunable magnetotransport upon switching the ferroelectric polarity in a La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$/BiFeO$_{3}$ (LCMO/BFO) heterostructure. This is revealed through the difference in dynamic spectral weight transfer between LCMO and LCMO/BFO at low temperatures, which indicates that transport in LCMO/BFO is polaronic in nature. This polaronic feature in LCMO/BFO decreases in relatively high magnetic fields due to the increased spin alignment, while…
Dc magnetic measurements across the charge ordering (CO) transition temperature (T$_{CO}$) in polycrystalline Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.975}$Al$_{0.025}$O$_3$ have been performed under simultaneous influence of external hydrostatic pressure (P) and magnetic field (H). We show the first experimental evidence that the melting of charge order instability obey an interesting scaling function, $δ$T$_{CO}$/P$^α$ = $f$(H/P$^β$) in H-P-T landscape, where $δ$T$_{CO}$ is the suppression of T$_{CO}$ by P and H. Corresponding values of the exponents, $α$ = 1.63 and $β$ = 0.33 have been extracted from dat…
The perovskite manganites of general formula RE_1-xAe_xMnO_3 (RE= rare earth,AE=Ca, Sr, Ba and Pb)have drawn considerable attention, especially following the discovery of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). They exhibit extraordinary large magnetoresistance pronounced as CMR in the vicinity of insulator-metal/paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition at a relatively large applied magnetic fields. However, for applied aspectes, occurence of significant CMR at low applied magnetic fields would be required. This review consists of of two sections: In the first section we have extensively reviewed the s…
To understand the near-interface magnetism in manganites, uniform, ultra-thin films of La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_3 were grown epitaxially on single crystal (001) LaAlO_3 and (110) NdGaO_3 substrates. The temperature and magnetic field dependent film resistance is used to probe the film's structural and magnetic properties. A surface and/or interface related dead-layer is inferred from the thickness dependent resistance and magnetoresistance. The total thickness of the dead layer is estimated to be $\sim 30 Å$ for films on NdGaO_3 and $\sim 50 Å$ for films on LaAlO_3.
The effect of low magnetic fields on the magnetic and electrical transport properties of polycrystalline samples of the phase separated compound La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ is studied. The results are interpreted in the framework of the field induced ferromagnetic fraction enlargement mechanism. A fraction expansion coefficient af, which relates the ferromagnetic fraction f with the applied field H, was obtained. A phenomenological model to understand the enlargement mechanism is worked out.
Due to the complex interplay of magnetic, structural, electronic, and orbital degrees of freedom, biaxial strain is known to play an essential role in the doped manganites. For coherently strained La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) thin films grown on SrTiO(3) substrates, we measured the magnetotransport properties both parallel and perpendicular to the substrate and found an anomaly of the electrical transport properties. Whereas metallic behavior is found within the plane of biaxial strain, for transport perpendicular to this plane an insulating behavior and non-linear current-voltage characteristics (IVC…
In order to study the magnetic and crystal structures in the Nd{1-x}Sr{x}MnO{3} system, we have peformed neutron diffraction measurements on melt-grown polycrystalline samples with 0.49 < x < 0.75. As a function of hole concentration x, the system shows systematic transformation of magnetic and crystal structures, which is consistently explained by the change of the character of Mn eg orbitals. With increasing x, the Nd{1-x}Sr{x}MnO{3} system exhibits a metallic ferromagnetic state, a metallic A-type AFM state, and then an insulating C-type AFM state. The CE-type charge-ordered AFM state was o…
We observed a dramatic peak in the 1/f noise at the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in low-Tc manganites. This many-orders-of-magnitude noise enhancement is observed for both polycrystalline and single-crystal samples of La{5/8-y}Pr{y}Ca{3/8}MnO{3} (y=0.35-0.4) in zero magnetic field and Pr{1-x}Ca{x}MnO{3} (x=0.35-0.5) in magnetic field. This observation strongly suggests that the microscopic phase separation in the low-Tc manganites causes formation of a percolation network, and that the observed MIT is a percolation threshold.
We present results of electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance and ac and dc magnetic susceptibility on polycrystalline samples of the type La(0.5)Ca(0.5-x)Ba(x)MnO(3) synthesized under identical heat treatment conditions. The substitution of larger Ba ions for Ca results in a non- monotonic variation of the curie temperature as the system evolves from a charge ordered insulating state for x=0 to a ferromagnetic metallic state for x=0.5. An intermediate compositino, x=0.1, interestingly exhibits ferromagnetic. insulating behaviour with thermal hysteresis in ac chi around the curie tem- peratu…
Transport, magnetic, magneto-optical (Kerr effect) and optical (light absorption) properties have been studied in an oriented polycrystalline La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_{3} film which shows colossal magneto-resistance. The correlations between these properties are presented. A giant change in IR light transmission (more than a 1000-fold decrease) is observed on crossing the Curie temperature (about 270 K) from high to low temperature. Large changes in transmittance in a magnetic field were observed as well. The giant changes in transmittance and the large magneto-transmittance can be used for devel…
The single layered manganite Pr$_{0.22}$Sr$_{1.78}$MnO$_4$ undergoes structural transition from high temperature tetragonal phase to low temperature orthorhombic phase below room temperature. The orthorhombic phase was reported to have two structural variants with slightly different lattice parameters and Mn-3$d$ levels show orbital ordering within both the variants, albeit having mutually perpendicular ordering axis. In addition to orbital ordering, the orthorhombic variants also order antiferromagnetically with different Néel temperatures. Our magnetic investigation on the polycrystalline sa…
We report measurements of the resistivity in the ferromagnetic state of epitaxial thin films of La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} and the low temperature specific heat of a polycrystalline La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}MnO_{3}. The resistivity below 100 K can be well fitted by ρ- ρ_{o} = E ω_{s}/sinh^{2}(\hbar ω_{s}/2k_{B}T) with \hbar ω_{s}/k_{B} \simeq 100 K and E being a constant. Such behavior is consistent with small-polaron coherent motion which involves a relaxation due to a soft optical phonon mode. The specific heat data also suggest the existence of such a phonon mode. The present results thus provide evidenc…
Nd_0.5 Ca_0.5 MnO_3 (NCMO) nanoparticles (average diameter ~ 20 and 40 nm) are synthesized by polymeric precursor sol-gel method and characterized by X- ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selective area electron diffraction (SAED), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometery and resistivity measurements. Both single crystalline and polycrystalline particles are present in the samples and they are found to retain the orthorhombic structure of the bulk NCMO. However, most strikingly, in the 20 nm particles, the charge ordered (CO) and the antiferromagn…
We have measured magnetic and transport response on the polycrystalline La$_{5/8-y}$Pr$_y$Ca$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$ ($y=0.30$, average grain size 2 microns) compound. In the temperature range where ferromagnetic metallic and insulating regions coexist we observed a persistent memory of low magnetic fields ($<$ 1 T) which is determined by the actual amount of the ferromagnetic phase. The possibility to manipulate this fraction with relatively small external perturbations is related to the phase separated nature of these manganese oxide based compounds. The colossal magnetoresistance figures obtained (a…
The magnetotransport behaviour is investigated in detail across the first order magnetic phase transition from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic state in polycrystalline Ce(Fe$_{0.96}$Al$_{0.04}$)$_2$ sample. The study clearly brings out various generic features associated with a first order transition, viz., hysteresis, phase coexistence, supercooling and superheating, presence and limits of the metastable regimes. These results of magnetotransport study exhibit and support all the interesting thermomagnetic history effects that were observed in our earlier dc-magnetisation study on the same…
Highly oriented polycrystalline SSMO thin films deposited on single crystal substrates by ultrasonic nebulized spray pyrolysis have been studied. The film on LAO is under compressive strain while LSAT and STO are under tensile strain. The presence of a metamagnetic state akin to cluster glass formed due to coexisting FM and antiferromagnetic/charge order (AFM/CO) clusters. All the films show colossal magnetoresistance but its temperature and magnetic field dependence are drastically different. In the lower temperature region the magnetic field dependent isothermal resistivity also shows signat…
Neutron scattering has been used to study the nature of the ferromagnetic transition in single crystals of La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 and La_0.8Ca_0.2MnO_3, and polycrystalline samples of La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO_3 and La_5/8Ca_3/8MnO_3 where the naturally occurring O-16 can be replaced with the O-18 isotope. Small angle neutron scattering on the x=0.3 single crystal reveals a discontinuous change in the scattering at the Curie temperature for wave vectors below ~0.065 A^-1. Strong relaxation effects are observed for this domain scattering, for the magnetic order parameter, and for the quasielastic scattering…
The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline La0.70(Ca0.30-xSrx)MnO3:Ag 10% manganite have been investigated. All the compositions are crystallized in single phase orthorhombic Pbnm space group. Both, the Insulator-Metal transition temperature (TIM) and Curie temperature (Tc) are observed at 298 K for x = 0.10 composition. Though both TIM and Tc are nearly unchanged with Ag addition, the MR is slightly improved. The MR at 300 K is found to be as large as 31% with magnetic field change of 1Tesla, whereas it reaches up to 49% at magnetic field of 3Tesla for La0.70Ca0.20Sr0.10MnO…
We report the magnetotransport properties of thin polycrystalline films of the recently discovered non-oxide perovskite superconductor MgCNi3. CNi3 precursor films were deposited onto sapphire substrates and subsequently exposed to Mg vapor at 700 C. We report transition temperatures (Tc) and critical field values (Hc2) of MgCNi3 films ranging in thickness from 7.5 nm to 100 nm. Films thicker than ~40 nm have a Tc ~ 8 K, and an upper critical field Hc2 ~ 14 T, which are both comparable to that of polycrystalline powders. Hall measurements in the normal state give a carrier density, n =-4.2 x 1…
The local epitaxial growth of pulsed laser deposited Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ films on polycrystalline spark plasma sintered Sr$_2$TiO$_4$ substrates was investigated to determine phase formation and preferred epitaxial orientation relationships ($ORs$) for isostructural Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) heteroepitaxy, further developing the high-throughput synthetic approach called Combinatorial Substrate Epitaxy (CSE). Both grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns of the film and substrate were indexable as single-phase RP-structured compounds. The optimal growth te…
We report the specific heat, magnetic, magnetotransport and galvanomagnetic properties of polycrystalline GdNiC$_2$. In the intermediate temperature region above $T_N$ = 20 K, we observe large negative magnetoresistance due to Zeeman splitting of the electronic bands and partial destruction of a charge density wave ground state. Our magnetoresistance and Hall measurements show that at low temperatures a magnetic field induced transformation from antiferromagnetic order to a metamagnetic phase results in the partial suppression of the CDW.
We have measured the electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect on several new single crystal samples and one polycrystalline sample of alpha-uranium. The residual resistivity ratios of these samples vary from 13 to 315. Matthiessen's law appears to hold above the onset of the charge density wave phase transitions that begin near 43 K, but not below this temperature. Sharp features at all three charge density wave transitions are observed and the effects of high magnetic fields on them are presented and discussed. The magnetoresistance is anisotropic, reaches 1000% at 2 K and 1…
Mixed-valence perovskite manganites (Re$_{1-x}$A$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ where Re=rare earth, A=alkaline earth) provide a unique opportunity to study the relationships between the structure and the magnetotransport properties due to an interplay among charge carriers, magnetic coupling, orbital ordering and structural distortion. This makes these compounds very exciting from both the basic research and from the technological view point. As the technology pursued with these materials requires film growth, extensive studies have been made on materials synthesis, structural and physical characterization a…
A series of superlattices composed of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) and ferroelectric/paraelectric Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ (0$\leq $x$\leq $1) were deposited on SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition. Films of epitaxial nature comprised of spherical mounds having uniform size are obtained. Magnetotransport properties of the films reveal a ferromagnetic Curie temperature in the range of 145-158 K and negative magnetoresistance as high as 30%, depending on the type of ferroelectric layers employed for their growth (\QTR{it}{i.e.} '\QTR{it}{x'} value). Ferroelec…
Coexistence of mutually influencing ferroelectric and magnetic ordering at low temperature in hexagonal phase of rare-earth manganites gives rise to interesting physical phenomena. Here, we report a detailed analysis of powder neutron diffraction (ND) studies on polycrystalline Y1-xDyxMnO3 (x = 0, 0.05) as a function of temperature. Our analysis shows that Dy doping at Y site leads to modification in lattice constants: unit cell shrinks in c direction, but expands in ab plane, unit cell volume increases and effective Mn magnetic moment also reduces. All the Mn-O bond lengths and O-Mn-O bond an…
A closer look at the temperature (T) dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) of two polycrystalline magnetic compounds, LaMn$_2$Ge$_2$ and SmMn$_2$Ge$_2$, previously reported by us, is made. A common feature for both these compounds is that the low temperature MR is positive (say, below, 30 K) in spite of the fact that both are ferromagnetic at such low temperatures; in addition, MR as a function of magnetic field (H) does not track magnetization (M) in the sense that M saturates at low fields, while MR varies linearly with H. These observations suggest that the magnetic layers interestingly do n…
The electronic phase separation (EPS) of optimally doped La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) thin films under various degrees of anisotropic strain is investigated by static magnetotransport and dynamic relaxation measurements. Three LCMO films were grown simultaneously on (001) NdGaO3 (NGO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition, and then post-growth annealed at 780 oC in O2 for different durations of time. With increasing annealing time, the films developed significant strains of opposite signs along the two orthogonal in-plane directions. The static temperature-dependent resistivity, R(T), was measured si…
The present work aims to address the electronic and magnetic properties of the intermetallic compound GdPd$_2$Bi through a comprehensive study of the structural, magnetic, electrical and thermal transport on a polycrystalline sample, followed by theoretical calculations. Our findings indicate that the magnetic ground state is antiferromagnetic in nature. Magnetotransport data present prominent hysteresis loop hinting a structural transition with further support from specific heat and thermopower measurements, but no such signature is observed in the magnetization study. Temperature dependent p…
We have investigated magnetization(M), magnetocaloric effect(MCE) and magnetothermopower(MTEP) in polycrystalline Pr0.6Sr0.4MnO3, which shows a second-order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition near room temperature (TC = 305 K). However, field-cooled M(T) within the long range ferromagnetic state shows an abrupt decrease at TS = 86 K for H < 3 T. The low temperature transition is first-order in nature as suggested by the hysteresis in M(T) and exothermic/endothermic peaks in differential thermal analysis for cooling and warming cycles. The anomaly at TS is attributed to a structural trans…
Here, we report an overview of the phase diagram of single layered and double layered Fe arsenide superconductors at high magnetic fields. Our systematic magnetotransport measurements of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ at different doping levels confirm the upward curvature of the upper critical magnetic field $H_{c2}(T)$ as a function of temperature $T$ defining the phase boundary between the superconducting and metallic states for crystallites with the ab planes oriented nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field. We further show from measurements on single crystals that this feature, w…
