We report the study of magnetic and orbital order in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ epitaxial thin films grown on (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$-(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT) (011)$_c$. In a new experimental approach, the polarization and energy dependence of resonant soft x-ray scattering are used to reveal significant modifications of the magnetic order in the film as compared to the bulk, namely (i) a different magnetic ordering wave vector, (ii) a different magnetic easy axis and (iii) an additional magnetic reordering transition at low temperatures. These observations indicate a strong impact of the epitaxial strain on the spin order, which is mediated by the orbital degrees of freedom and which provides a promising route to tune the magnetic properties of manganite films. Our results further demonstrate that resonant soft x-ray scattering is a very suitable technique to study the magnetism in thin films, to which neutron scattering cannot easily be applied due to the small sample volume.
We studied the charge-orbital ordering in the superlattice of charge-ordered insulating Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ and ferromagnetic metallic La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ by resonant soft x-ray diffraction. A temperature-dependent incommensurability is found in the orbital order. In addition, a large hysteresis is observed that is caused by phase competition between insulating charge ordered and metallic ferromagnetic states. No magnetic phase transitions are observed in contrast to bulk, confirming the unique character of the superlattice. The deviation from the commensurate orbital order can…
Contradictory reports about the electronic and magnetic behavior of bulk Nd0:5Ba0:5MnO3 with uniform disorder exist in the literature. In this work, we investigate the thin films of Nd0:5Ba0:5MnO3, grown by pulsed laser deposition. The success of epitaxial growth in a layer-by-layer mode and high quality of the films have been confirmed by in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, X-ray reflectivity, and, X-ray diffraction. These films are found to be insulting and exhibit spin-glass behavior at low temperatures. The study offers an opportunity to tune the c…
The structure, morphology, and electrical properties of epitaxial a-axis oriented thin films of Nd(0.2)Sr(0.8)MnO(3) are reported for thicknesses 10 nm <= t <= 150 nm. Films were grown with both tensile and compressive strain on various substrates. It is found that the elongated crystallographic c-axes of the films remain fully strained to the substrates for all thicknesses in both strain states. Relaxation of the a and b axes is observed for t>= 65 nm with films grown under tensile strain developing uniaxial crack arrays (running along the c axis) due to a highly anisotropic thermal expansion…
The effect of deposition oxygen pressure (P$_{O}$) on phase separation (PS) induced in epitaxial La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$/NdGaO$_{3}$(001) films was investigated. Fully oxygenated films grown at high P$_{O}$ are anisotropically strained. They exhibit PS over a wide temperature range, because of the large orthorhombicity of NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates. The paramagnetic insulator-to-ferromagnetic metal (FM) and FM-to-antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) transitions gradually shift to lower temperatures with decreasing PO. The AFI state is initially weakened (P$_{O}$ >= 30 Pa), but then becomes mo…
The suitability of a particular material for use in magnetic devices is determined by the process of magnetization reversal/relaxation, which in turn depends on the magnetic anisotropy. Therefore, designing new ways to control magnetic anisotropy in technologically important materials is highly desirable. Here we show that magnetic anisotropy of epitaxial thin-films of half-metallic ferromagnet La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) is determined by the proximity to thermodynamic equilibrium conditions during growth. We performed a series of X-ray diffraction and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) ex…
The transport and magnetic properties of correlated La{0.53}Sr{0.47}MnO{3} ultrathin films, grown epitaxially on SrTiO{3}, show a sharp cusp at the structural transition temperature of the substrate. Using a combination of experiment and theory we show that the cusp is a result of resonant coupling between the charge carriers in the film and a soft phonon mode in the SrTiO{3}, mediated through oxygen octahedra in the film. The amplitude of the mode diverges towards the transition temperature, and phonons are launched into the first few atomic layers of the film affecting its electronic state.
Recently Wagner et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. Vol. 81, P. 3980 (1998)] proposed that Mott's original model be modified to incorporate a hopping barrier which depends on the misorientation between the spins of electrons at the initial and the final states in an elementary process. They further claimed that using the model they can explain the observed scaling behavior-- negative-magnetoresistivity scaling proportional to the Brillouin function $\cal{B}$ in the ferromagnetic state and to ${\cal{B}}^2$ in the paramagnetic state. In this comment we argue that the modification needed for Mott's original…
Epitaxial thin films of charge-ordered Pr$_{0.625}$Ca$_{0.375}$MnO$_{3}$ have been studied using variable temperature Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS). The as grown films were found to be granular while the annealed films show atomic terraces at all temperatures and are found to be electronically homogeneous in 78-300K temperature range. At high temperatures (T$>$T$_{CO}\approx$ 230 K) the local tunnel spectra of the annealed films show a depression in the density of states (DOS) near Fermi energy implying a pseudogap with a significant DOS at E$_F$. The gap feature bec…
The issue of interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic multilayers with superconducting (SC) spacer is addressed in La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) - YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO) - La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) epitaxial trilayers through resistivity, ac-susceptibility and magnetization measurements. The ferromagnetic (FM) LSMO layers possessing in-plane magnetization suppress the critical temperature (T$_{c})$ of the c-axis oriented YBCO thin film spacer. The superconducting order, however, survives even in very thin layers (thickness d$_{Y} \sim $ 50 Å, $\sim $ 4 unit cells…
Thin films of perovskite manganite La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ were grown epitaxially on various substrates by either the pulsed laser deposition method or laser molecular beam epitaxy. The substrates change both the volume and symmetry of the unit cell of the films. It is revealed that the symmetry as well as the volume of the unit cell have strong influence on the metal-insulator transition temperature and the size of magnetoresistance.
Epitaxial La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) films have been grown on SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates via pulsed laser deposition. In a 22-nm thick LSMO film with a low residual resistivity of $ρ_0$ = 59 $μΩ$ cm, we found a zero-field dip in the magnetoresistance (MR) below 10 K, manifesting the weak antilocalization (WAL) effect due to strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We have analyzed the MR data by including the D'yakonov-Perel' spin-relaxation mechanism in the WAL theory. We explain that the delocalized spin-down electron subband states play a crucial role for facilitating marked SOC in clean L…
A heterostructure comprised of a 2.7 nm (7 unit-cell) thick layer of the metallic ferromagnet La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) and two 50 nm thick layers of the high-temperature superconductor YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO3 by pulsed-laser deposition was characterized by magnetization measurements and spherical-aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The saturation magnetization is about half of that in bulk La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3). A massive reduction of the magnetization previously inferred from sputter-deposited La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3)-YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7)…
We studied magnetic field dependent microwave absorption in epitaxial La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ films using an X-band Bruker ESR spectrometer. By analyzing angular and temperature dependence of the ferromagnetic and spin-wave resonances we determine spin-wave stiffness and anisotropy field. The spin-wave stiffness as found from the spectrum of the standing spin-wave resonances in thin films is in fair agreement with the results of inelastic neutron scattering studies on a single crystal of the same composition [Vasiliu-Doloc et al., J. Appl. Phys. \textbf{83}, 7343 (1998)].
A giant low-frequency, in-plane dielectric constant, eps~10^6, for epitaxial thin films of Ca(1-x)La(x)MnO(3) (x<=0.03) was observed over a broad temperature range, 4K <= T 300K. This phenomenon is attributed to an internal barrier-layer capacitor (IBLC) structure, with insulating boundaries between semiconducting grains. The room-temperature eps increases substantially with electron (La) doping. The measured values of eps exceed those of conventional two-phase IBLC materials based on (Ba,Sr)TiO(3) as well as recently discovered CaCu(3)Ti(4)O(12) and (Li,Ti) doped NiO.
Thin films of perovskite manganite La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} were grown epitaxially on SrTiO_3(100), MgO(100) and LaAlO_3(100) substrates by the pulsed laser deposition method. Microscopic structures of these thin film samples as well as a bulk sample were fully determined by x-ray diffraction measurements. The unit cells of the three films have different shapes, i.e., contracted tetragonal, cubic, and elongated tetragonal for SrTiO_3, MgO, and LaAlO_3 cases, respectively, while the unit cell of the bulk is cubic. It is found that the samples with cubic unit cell show smaller peak magnetoresista…
Atomically flat, epitaxial, and stoichiometric thin films of the electronically phase separated compound (La$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$)$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ were grown on as-received and treated NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates by fine tuning of oxygen pressure during deposition. Optimal thin films with step flow growth mode show superior physical properties compared to thin films grown in off-optimal oxygen pressures, {\em viz.} the highest maximum temperature coefficient of resistance, the highest peak-resistivity temperature, and reduced coercive fields. Transport, magnetization, and x-ray diffractio…
Magnetic anisotropies of ferromagnetic thin films are induced by epitaxial strain from the substrate via strain-induced anisotropy in the orbital magnetic moment and that in the spatial distribution of spin-polarized electrons. However, the preferential orbital occupation in ferromagnetic metallic La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films studied by x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) has always been found out-of-plane for both tensile and compressive epitaxial strain and hence irrespective of the magnetic anisotropy. In order to resolve this mystery, we directly probed the preferential orbital occup…
Raman spectra of LCMO films grown on LAO (001), STO (001), and MgO (001) substrates were studied at different temperatures. The effect of temperature, doping level and strain on Raman spectra are discussed in detail. With decreasing temperature, the changes of Raman spectra are correlated with the disorder-order transition, shuch as: paramagnetism to ferromagnetism, and charge-ordering. The strain induced by lattice-substrate mismatch affects the Raman spectra strongly. The mode induced by disorder of oxygen defects is apparently observed in $La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$ film on STO due to the lar…
We report strongly momentum-dependent local charge screening dynamics in CE-type charge, orbital, and spin ordered La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$, based on Mn K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering data. Through a comparison with theoretical calculations, we show that the observed momentum dependence reflects highly localized, nearest neighbor screening of the transient local charge perturbation in this compound with an exciton-like screening cloud, rather than delocalized screening. The size of the screening cloud is estmated to be about 0.4-0.5 interatomic distances.
We study magnetic-field-dependent nonresonant microwave absorption and dispersion in thin La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ films and show that it originates from the colossal magnetoresistance. We develop the model for magnetoresistance of a thin ferromagnetic film in oblique magnetic field. The model accounts fairly well for our experimental findings, as well as for results of other researchers. We demonstrate that nonresonant microwave absorption is a powerful technique that allows contactless measurement of magnetic properties of thin films, including magnetoresistance, anisotropy field and co…
We have utilized the antiferromagnetic nature and structural/chemical compatibility of La$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$MnO$_{3}$ with highly spin polarized La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ to prepare epitaxial exchange bias couples. A robust exchange bias (EB) shift of magnetization hysteresis with associated interfacial exchange energy J $\approx$ 0.13 erg/cm$^2$ at 10 K along with enhanced coercivity are reported. The EB effect was engineered to bring coercivity contrast between La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ and cobalt films in La$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$MnO$_{3}$/La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3…
The local epitaxial growth of pulsed laser deposited Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ films on polycrystalline spark plasma sintered Sr$_2$TiO$_4$ substrates was investigated to determine phase formation and preferred epitaxial orientation relationships ($ORs$) for isostructural Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) heteroepitaxy, further developing the high-throughput synthetic approach called Combinatorial Substrate Epitaxy (CSE). Both grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns of the film and substrate were indexable as single-phase RP-structured compounds. The optimal growth te…
We have measured the contribution of magnetic domain walls (DWs) to the electric resistance in epitaxial manganite films patterned by electron-beam lithography into a track containing a set of notches. We find a DW resistance-area (RA) product of ~2.5 10^(-13) Ohm/m^2 at low temperature and bias, which is several orders of magnitude larger than the values reported for 3d ferromagnets. However, the current-voltage characteristics are highly linear which indicates that the DWs are not phase separated but metallic. The DWRA is found to increase upon increasing the injected current, presumably ref…
The dynamics of the charge ordered (CO) state under non-equilibrium conditions created by strong dc-electric field (~106 V/cm) and photo-illumination with short (~ 6 ns) laser pulses is investigated in Bi1-xCaxMnO3 (x > 0.5) epitaxial films. A pulsed laser deposition method was used to synthesize films on (100) LaAlO3 (LAO) and (100) SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. The crystallographic structure, temperature dependence of electrical resistivity and magnetization of the samples of different composition prepared under different oxygen partial pressure (pO2) and deposition temperature (TD) are studied. …
The coercivity of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ thin films can be enhanced by Ru substitution for Mn. In order to elucidate its mechanism, we performed soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the Ru M$_{2,3}$ and Mn L$_{2,3}$ edges. We found that the spin direction of Ru and Mn are opposite and that Ru has a finite orbital magnetic moment. Cluster-model analysis indicated that the finite orbital magnetic moment as well as the reduced spin moment of Ru result from local lattice distortion caused by epitaxial strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate in the presence of spin-orb…
We have synthesized epitaxial La(1-x)Sr(1+x)MnO4 (x=1/3) films as random alloys and cation-ordered analogues to probe how cation order affects the properties of a 2D manganite. The films show weak ferromagnetic ordering up to 130 K, although there is a dramatic difference in magnetic anisotropy depending on the cation order. While all films exhibit similar gapped insulator behavior above 130 K, there is a significant difference in the low temperature transport mechanism depending on the cation order. Differences in magnetic anisotropy and low temperature transport are consistent with differenc…
We report resonant x-ray scattering data of the orbital and magnetic ordering at low temperatures at the Mn $L_{\rm 2,3}$ edges in \lsmo. The orderings display complex energy features close to the Mn absorption edges. Systematic modeling with atomic multiplet crystal field calculations was used to extract meaningful information regarding the interplay of spin, orbital and Jahn-Teller order. These calculations provide a good general agreement with the observed energy dependence of the scattered intensity {for a} dominant orbital ordering of the $ d_{x^2 - z^2} / d_{y^2 - z^2} $ type. In additio…
In the perovskite-type Ca$_{1-x}$Ce$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (CCMO), one can control the transport and magnetic properties through varying Ce content. In the case of thin films, the properties can also be controlled by epitaxial strain from the substrate through changing it such as YAlO$_{3}$ (YAO), NdAlO$_{3}$ (NAO), and LaSrAlO$_{4}$ (LSAO). However, one cannot measure the magnetization of thin films on NAO substrates by conventional magnetization measurements because of the strong paramagnetic signals from the Nd$^{3+}$ ions. In order to eliminate the influence of Nd$^{3+}$ and to identify magnetic p…
We describe a strategy for using resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) to study the electronic structure of transition metal oxide quantum wires. Using electron beam lithography and ion milling, we have produced periodic, patterned arrays of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) phase La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) consisting of ~ 5000 wires, each of which is 80 nm in width. The scattered intensity exhibits a series of peaks that can be interpreted as Bragg reflections from the periodic structure or, equivalently, diffraction orders from the grating-like structure. RSXS measurements at the Mn L(2,3) edge, whic…
Ultra-thin films of the electron doped manganite La$_{0.8}$Ce$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$ were grown in a layer-by-layer growth mode on SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates by pulsed laser interval deposition. High structural quality and surface morphology was confirmed by a combination of synchrotron based x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements confirm the presence of Ce$^{+4}$ and Mn$^{+2}$ ions. In addition, the electron doping signature was corroborated by Hall effect measurements. All grown films show ferromagnetic ground state as revealed by both XMCD…
Epitaxial superlattices of ferromagnetic/paramagnetic La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ materials have been prepared on SrTiO$_3$ (100) substrate using pulse laser deposition technique. An unexpected onset of interface magnetic interaction has been observed around 40 K. Interestingly, magnetic exchange bias effect has been observed in both field cooled and zero field cooled magnetization loops, however, the shifting of loop is opposite in both measurements. Exchange bias field vanishes as temperature increases to interface magnetic ordering temperature. Moreover, exchange bias field is f…
We report on a systematic study of strain effects on the transport properties and the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{c}$ of high-quality La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. Both the magnetization and the resistivity are critically dependent on the film thickness. $T_{c}$ is enhanced with decreasing the film thickness due to the compressive stain produced by lattice mismatch. The resistivity above 165 K of the films with various thicknesses is consistent with small polaronic hopping conductivity. The polaronic formation energy $E…
Presently, cerium-doped LaMnO$_3$ is vividly discussed as an electron-doped counterpart prototype to the well-established hole-doped mixed-valence manganites. Here, La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ thin films of different thicknesses, degrees of CeO$_2$ phase segregation, and oxygen deficiency, grown on SrTiO$_3$ single crystal substrates, are compared with respect to their resistance-vs.-temperature (R vs. T) behavior from 300~K down to 90~K. While the variation of the film thickness (and thus the degree of epitaxial strain) in the range between 10~nm and 100~nm has only a weak impact on the elect…
We report an x-ray scattering study of octahedral tilt ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with x=0.4 and 0.25 and in LaMnO$_3$. The sensitivity to tilt ordering is achieved by tuning the incident x-ray energy to the L$_I$, L$_{II}$ and L$_{III}$ absorption edges of Pr and La, respectively. The resulting energy-dependent profiles are characterized by a dipole-resonant peak and higher energy fine structure. The polarization dependence is predominantly $σ$-to-$π$ and the azimuthal dependence follows a sin-squared behavior. These results are similar to those obtained in recen…
We present resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS) results from small band width manganites (Pr,Ca)MnO$_3$, which show that the CE-type spin ordering (SO) at the phase boundary is stabilized only below the canted antiferromagnetic transition temperature and enhanced by ferromagnetism in the macroscopically insulating state (FM-I). Our results reveal the fragility of the CE-type ordering that underpins the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect in this system, as well as an unexpected cooperative interplay between FM-I and CE-type SO which is in contrast to the competitive interplay between the …
The electronic density of states (DOS) of La$_{0.625}$Ca$_{0.375}$MnO$_3$(LCMO) strain free epitaxial thin films with an insulator-metal transition temperature (T$_{IM}$) of 250 K was probed using variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We find a depression in the DOS with a finite zero bias conductance (ZBC) signifying a pseudogap (PG) in 78-310 K temperature range. With cooling, the ZBC is found to increase indicating an increased DOS near E$_F$. We interpret PG as a signature of Jahn-Teller polarons while ZBC change, in agreement with the bulk insulator-metal tr…
A lightly doped perovskite mangantite La_{0.88}Sr_{0.12}MnO_3 exhibits a phase transition at T_{OO}=145 K from a ferromagnetic metal (T_C=172 K) to a novel ferromagnetic insulator. We identify that the key parameter in the transition is the orbital degree of freedom in e_g electrons. By utilizing the resonant x-ray scattering technique, orbital ordering is directly detected below T_{OO}, in spite of a significant diminution of the cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion. The new experimental features are well described by a theory treating the orbital degree of freedom under strong electron correlat…
Polycrystalline La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation on single crystal (100) yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates to investigate the mechanism of magneto-transport in a granular manganite. Different degrees of granularity is achieved by using the deposition temperature (T$_{D}$) of 700 and 800 $^{0}$C. Although no significant change in magnetic order temperature (T$_C$) and saturation magnetization is seen for these two types of films, the temperature and magnetic field dependence of their resistivity ($ρ$(T, H)) is strikingly dissimi…
We report the first observation of changes in the electronic structure of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) across the filling-control metal-insulator (MI) transition by means of in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of epitaxial thin films. The Fermi surface gradually disappears near the MI transition by transferring the spectral weight from the coherent band near the Fermi level ($E_{F}$) to the lower Hubbard band, whereas a pseudogap behavior also exists in the ARPES spectra in the close vicinity of $E_{F}$ for the metallic LSMO. These results indicate that the spectral…
Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially grown thin films is affected by the strain from the substrates due to a combined effect of distorted electronic structure and spin-orbit interaction (SOI). As an inverse process, one expects an anisotropy of the electronic structure induced by magnetization in the presence of SOI. We have studied the charge-density anisotropy induced by magnetization in thin films of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ via x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). XMLD measurements on thin films with various thicknesses have shown that the XMLD intensity is propor…
We report on resonant magnetic x-ray scattering and absorption spectroscopy studies of exchange-coupled antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{3+}$ magnetic moments in multiferroic Eu$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$MnO$_3$ in the absence of an external magnetic field. The observed resonant spectrum is characteristic of a magnetically ordered $^7F_1$ state that mirrors the Mn magnetic ordering, due to exchange coupling between the Eu $4f$ and Mn $3d$ spins. This is the first observation of long range magnetic order generated by exchange coupling of magnetic moments of formally non-magnetic Van Vleck ions, which is …
We report the first direct resonant soft x-ray scattering observations of orbital ordering. We have studied the low temperature phase of La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$, a compound that displays charge and orbital ordering. Previous claims of orbital ordering in such materials have relied on observations at the Manganese $K$ edge. These claims have been questioned in several theoretical studies. Instead we have employed resonant soft x-ray scattering at the manganese $L_{III}$ and $L_{II}$ edges which probes the orbital ordering directly. Energy scans at constant wavevector are compared to theoret…
We present the results of a systematic x-ray scattering study of the charge and orbital ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with $x$=0.25, 0.4 and 0.5. The temperature dependence of the scattering at the charge and orbital wavevectors, and of the lattice constants, was characterized throughout the ordered phase of each sample. It was found that the charge and orbital order wavevectors are commensurate with the lattice, in striking contrast to the results of earlier electron diffraction studies of samples with $x$=0.5. High momentum-transfer resolution studies of the x=0.4 …
Variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy studies on (110) oriented epitaxial thin films of La$_{0.350}$Pr$_{0.275}$Ca$_{0.375}$MnO$_3$ are reported in the temperature range of 77 to 340 K. The films, grown on lattice matched NdGaO$_3$ substrates, show a hysteretic metal-insulator transition in resistivity at 170 K. The topographic STM images show step-terrace morphology while the conductance images display a nearly homogeneous surface. The normalized conductance spectra at low temperatures (T$<$150 K) show an energy gap of 0.5 eV while for T$\geq$180 K a gap of 0.16 eV i…
Modulation of charge carrier dynamics and hence electrical conductivity of solids by photoexcitation has been a rich field of research with numerous applications. Similarly, electric and magnetic field assisted enhancement of conductivity are of fundamental importance and technological use. Hole doped manganites of the type (A$_{1-x}$B$_{x})$MnO$_{3}$, where A and B are rare and alkaline earth metals respectively have the distinction of showing all three effects. Here we establish the complementarity of the electric, magnetic and photon fields in driving an insulator-metal transition in epitax…
We report complex band structure (CBS) calculations for the four late transition metal monoxides, MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO, in their paramagnetic phase. The CBS is obtained from density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations to take into account correlation effects. The so-called $β$ parameters, governing the exponential decay of the transmission probability in the non-resonant tunneling regime of these oxides, are extracted from the CBS. Different model constructions are examined in the DMFT part of the calculation. The calculated $β$ parameters provide theoretica…
The epitaxial stabilization of a single layer or superlattice structures composed of complex oxide materials on polar (111) surfaces is severely burdened by reconstructions at the interface, that commonly arise to neutralize the polarity. We report on the synthesis of high quality LaNiO$_3$/mLaAlO$_3$ pseudo cubic (111) superlattices on polar (111)-oriented LaAlO$_3$, the proposed complex oxide candidate for a topological insulating behavior. Comprehensive X-Ray diffraction measurements, RHEED, and element specific resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy affirm their high structural and chemica…

We report the temperature and magnetic field dependence of transport properties in epitaxial films of the manganite La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ in the overdoped region of the phase diagram for $x > 0.5$, where a charge--ordered (CO) and an antiferromagnetic (AF) phase are present. Resistivity, magnetoresistance and angular dependence of magnetoresistance were measured in the temperature interval $4.2 ~\mathrm{K} < T < 300 ~\mathrm{K}$, for three concentrations $x = 0.52, 0.58$ and $0.75$ and in magnetic fields up to 5 T. The semiconductor/insulator--like behavior in zero field was observed in …
The effect of x-rays on an orbital and charge ordered epitaxial film of a Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ is presented. As the film is exposed to x-rays, the antiferromagnetic response increases and concomitantly the conductivity of the film improve. These results are discussed in terms of a persistent x-ray induced doping, leading to a modification of the magnetic structure. This effect allows writing electronic and magnetic domains in the film and represents a novel way of manipulating magnetism.
To understand the near-interface magnetism in manganites, uniform, ultra-thin films of La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_3 were grown epitaxially on single crystal (001) LaAlO_3 and (110) NdGaO_3 substrates. The temperature and magnetic field dependent film resistance is used to probe the film's structural and magnetic properties. A surface and/or interface related dead-layer is inferred from the thickness dependent resistance and magnetoresistance. The total thickness of the dead layer is estimated to be $\sim 30 Å$ for films on NdGaO_3 and $\sim 50 Å$ for films on LaAlO_3.
A variety of emergent phenomena has been enabled by interface engineering in the complex oxides heterostructures. While extensive attention has been attracted to LaMnO3 (LMO) thin films for observing the control of functionalities at its interface with substrate, the nature of the magnetic phases in the thin film is, however, controversial. Here, it is reported that the ferromagnetism in 2 and 5 unit cells thick LMO films epitaxially deposited (001)-SrTiO3 substrates ferromagnetic/ferromagnetic coupling in 8 and 10-unit-cell ones, and a striking ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic pinning effect wi…
The effect of doping on the electronic structure at the Mn sites in the La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 series (x=0, 0.3 and 0.5) was studied by means of non-resonant hard X- ray emission spectroscopy (XES). We observe a linear dichroism in the Mn K-beta main lines (3p to 1s transitions) that is strongest for x=0 and decreases with increasing x to 0.5. The Mn K-beta main lines in the poly-crystalline samples change considerably less upon increasing the hole doping (substitution of La by Sr) than it would be expected based on the change of formal valence. From this we conclude that the charge and spin de…
