We discuss the ill-posed Cauchy problem for elliptic equations, which is pervasive in inverse boundary value problems modeled by elliptic equations. We provide essentially optimal stability results, in wide generality and under substantially minimal assumptions. As a general scheme in our arguments, we show that all such stability results can be derived by the use of a single building brick, the three-spheres inequality.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for multidimensional elliptic equations in a cylindrical domain. The method of spectral expansion in eigenfunctions of the Cauchy problem for equations with deviating argument establishes a criterion of the strong solvability of the considered elliptic Cauchy problem. It is shown that the ill-posedness of the elliptic Cauchy problem is equivalent to the existence of an isolated point of the continuous spectrum for a self-adjoint operator with deviating argument.
In this paper, the existence, uniqueness and regularity properties, Strichartz type estimates for solution of multipoint Cauchy problem for linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations with general elliptic leading part is obtained.
In this short paper we prove a global logarithmic stability of the Cauchy problem for H 2-solutions of an anisotropic elliptic equation in a Lip-schitz domain. The result we obtained is based on tools borrowed from the existing technics to establish stability estimate for the Cauchy problem [4] (see also [1]) combined with tools we already used in [6] to study an inverse medium problem.
We prove that the Cauchy problem associated to the Zakharov-Schulman system $iu_t+L_1u=uv$, $L_2v=L_3(|u|^2)$ is locally well-posed for given initial data in Sobolev spaces $H^s(R^n)$, $s\geq n/4$, for n =2,3. Here, L_j denote second order operators, with L_1 non-degenerate and L_2 elliptic.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the coefficients of a general second-order elliptic operator in two dimensions by measuring the corresponding Cauchy data on an arbitrary open subset of the boundary. We show that one can determine the coefficients of the operator up to natural obstructions such as conformal invariance, gauge transformations and diffeomorphism invariance. We use the main result to prove that the curl of the magnetic field and the electric potential are uniquely determined by measuring partial Cauchy data associated to the magnetic Schroedinger equation measured on…
This Note derives regularity bounds for a Gevrey criterion when the Cauchy problem of elliptic equations is solved by regularization. When utilizing the regularization, one knows that checking such criterion is basically problematic, albeit its importance to engineering circumstances. Therefore, coping with that impediment helps us improve the use of some regularization methods in real-world applications. This work also consider the presence of the power-law nonlinearities.
We deal with an inverse problem arising in corrosion detection. The presence of corrosion damage is modeled by a nonlinear boundary condition on the inaccessible portion of the metal specimen. We propose a method for the approximate reconstruction of such a nonlinearity. A crucial step of this procedure, which encapsulates the major cause of the ill-posedness of the problem, consists of the solution of a Cauchy problem for an elliptic equation. For this purpose we propose an SVD approach.
We prove a sharp three sphere inequality for solutions to third order perturbations of a product of two second order elliptic operators with real coefficients. Then we derive various kinds of quantitative estimates of unique continuation for the anisotropic plate equation. Among these, we prove a stability estimate for the Cauchy problem for such an equation and we illustrate some applications to the size estimates of an unknown inclusion made of different material that might be present in the plate. The paper is self-contained and the Carleman estimate, from which the sharp three sphere inequ…
We prove that solutions to Cauchy problems related to the $p$-parabolic equations are stable with respect to the nonlinearity exponent $p$. More specifically, solutions with a fixed initial trace converge in an $L^q$-space to a solution of the limit problem as $p>2$ varies.
We discuss the Cauchy problem for anisotropic wave equations. Precisely, we address the question to know which kind of Cauchy data on the lateral boundary are necessary to guarantee uniqueness of solutions of an anisotropic wave equation. In the case where the uniqueness holds, the natural problem that arise in this context is to estimate the solutions, in some appropriate space, in terms of the Cauchy data. We aim in this paper to transfer, via a reduced Fourrier-Bros-Iagolnitzer transform, the known stability estimates for the Cauchy problem for elliptic equations to that for waves equations…

The uniqueness of parabolic Cauchy problems is nowadays a classical problem and since Hadamard \cite{Ha} these kind of problems are known to be ill-posed and even severely ill-posed. Until now there are only few partial results concerning the quantification of the stability for parabolic Cauchy problems. In the present article, we bring the complete answer to this issue, provided that the space domain has finite diameter with respect to the geodesic distance and assuming that solutions are sufficiently smooth.
In this article we provide a generalized version of the result of L.H. Son and W. Tutschke \cite{tut} on the solvability of first order systems on the plane whose initial functions are arbitrary holomorphic functions. This is achieved by considering the more general concept of holomorphicity with respect to the structure polynomial $X^2 + βX + α$. It is shown that the Son-Tutschke lemma on the construction of complex linear operators associated to the Cauchy-Riemann operator remains valid when interpreted for a large class of real parameters $α$ and $β$ including the elliptic case but also cas…
The Cauchy problem for the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations (VMB) is considered. First the renormalized solution to the Vlasov equation with the Lorentz force is discussed and the difficulty on the partial differentiability of the coefficients is overcome. Then the weak stability of the renormalized solutions to the Cauchy problem of VMB is established using the compactness of velocity averages and a renormalized formulation. Furthermore, the large time behavior of the renormalized solutions to VMB is studied and it is proved that the density of particles tends to a local Maxwellian as the t…
In this paper we investigate the problem of identifying the source term in an elliptic system from a single noisy measurement couple of the Neumann and Dirichlet data. A variational method of Tikhonov-type regularization with specific misfit term of Kohn-Vogelius-type and quadratic stabilizing penalty term is suggested to tackle this linear inverse problem. The method also appears as a variant of the Lavrentiev regularization. For the occurring linear inverse problem in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, convergence and rate results can be found from the general theory of classical Tikhonov …
We consider an inverse problem of determining coefficient matrices in an $N$-system of second-order elliptic equations in a bounded two dimensional domain by a set of Cauchy data on arbitrary subboundary. The main result of the article is as follows: If two systems of elliptic operators generate the same set of partial Cauchy data on an arbitrary subboundary, then the coefficient matrices of the first-order and zero-order terms satisfy the prescribed system of first-order partial differential equations. The main result implies the uniqueness of any two coefficient matrices provided that the on…
We consider the inverse boundary value problem of determining the potential $q$ in the equation $Δu + qu = 0$ in $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, from local Cauchy data. A result of global Lipschitz stability is obtained in dimension $n\geq 3$ for potentials that are piecewise linear on a given partition of $Ω$. No sign, nor spectrum condition on $q$ is assumed, hence our treatment encompasses the reduced wave equation $Δu + k^2c^{-2}u=0$ at fixed frequency $k$.
The paper is devoted to investigating a Cauchy problem for nonlinear elliptic PDEs in the abstract Hilbert space. The problem is hardly solved by computation since it is severely ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard. We shall use a modified integral equation method to regularize the nonlinear problem with globally and locally Lipschitz source terms. Convergence estimates are established under priori assumptions on exact solution. A numerical test is provided to illustrate that the proposed method is feasible and effective. These results extend some earlier works on a Cauchy problem for elliptic …
In this note we discuss the conditional stability issue for the finite dimensional Calderón problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation with a finite number of measurements. More precisely, we assume that the unknown potential $q \in L^{\infty}(Ω) $ in the equation $((-Δ)^s+ q)u = 0 \mbox{ in } Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ satisfies the a priori assumption that it is contained in a finite dimensional subspace of $L^{\infty}(Ω)$. Under this condition we prove Lipschitz stability estimates for the fractional Calderón problem by means of finitely many Cauchy data depending on $q$. We allow for the …
This work deals with the inhomogeneous Landau equation on the torus in the cases of hard, maxwellian and moderately soft potentials. We first investigate the linearized equation and we prove exponential decay estimates for the associated semigroup. We then turn to the nonlinear equation and we use the linearized semigroup decay in order to construct solutions in a close-to-equilibrium setting. Finally, we prove a exponential stability for such a solution, with a rate as close as we want to the optimal rate given by the semigroup decay.
We begin a study of a multi-parameter family of Cauchy initial-value problems for the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation, analyzing the solution in the semiclassical limit. We use the inverse scattering transform for this equation, along with the steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou. The initial conditions are selected both to allow all relevant scattering data to be calculated without approximation and also to place the governing equation in a transsonic state in which the quantum fluid dynamical system formally approximating it is of hyperbolic type for some $x$ and of elliptic typ…
In this paper we prove that the Cauchy problem for first-order quasi-linear systems of partial differential equations is ill-posed in Gevrey spaces, under the assumption of an initial ellipticity. The assumption bears on the principal symbol of the first-order operator. Ill-posedness means instability in the sense of Hadamard, specifically an instantaneous defect of Hölder continuity of the flow from $G^σ$ to $L^2$, where $σ\in(0,1)$ depends on the initial spectrum. Building on the analysis carried out by G. Métivier [\textit{Remarks on the well-posedness of the nonlinear Cauchy problem}, Cont…
We study the Cauchy problem associated to a family of nonautonomous semilinear equations in the space of bounded and continuous functions over R^d and in L^p-spaces with respect to tight evolution systems of measures. Here, the linear part of the equation is a nonautonomous second-order elliptic operator with unbounded coefficients defined in IxR^d, (I being a right-halfline). To the above Cauchy problem we associate a nonlinear evolution operator, which we study in detail, proving some summability improving properties. We also study the stability of the null solution to the Cauchy problem.
We study a quantum Boltzmann-Condensation system that describes the evolution of the interaction between a well formed Bose-Einstein condensate and the quasi-particles cloud. The kinetic model is valid for a dilute regime at which the temperature of the gas is very low compared to the Bose-Einstein condensation critical temperature. In particular, our system couples the density of the condensate from a Gross-Pitaevskii type equation to the kinetic equation through the dispersion relation in the kinetic model and the corresponding transition probability rate from pre to post collision momentum …
We consider Cauchy's equation of motion for hyperelastic materials. The solution of this nonlinear initial-boundary value problem is the vector field which discribes the displacement which a particle of this material perceives when exposed to stress and external forces. This equation is of greatest relevance when investigating the behaviour of elastic, anisotropic composites and for the detection of defects in such materials from boundary measurements. This is why results on unique solvability and continuous dependence from the initial values are of large interest in materials research and str…
We consider the Klein-Gordon equation on analytic spacetimes with an analytic Cauchy surface. In this setting, we prove the existence of pure analytic Hadamard states. The proof is based on considering an elliptic operator obtained by Wick rotating the Klein-Gordon operator in a neighborhood of a Cauchy hypersurface. The Cauchy data of Hadamard two-point functions are constructed as Calderón projectors (suitably generalized if the hypersurface is non-compact) for the elliptic operator.
Consider classical solutions to the parabolic reaction diffusion equation $$ &u_t =Lu+f(x,u), (x,t)\in R^n\times(0,\infty); &u(x,0) =g(x)\ge0, x\in R^n; &u\ge0, $$ where $$ L=\sum_{i,j=1}^na_{i,j}(x)\frac{\partial^2}{\partial x_i \partial x_j}+\sum_{i=1}^nb_i(x)\frac\partial{\partial x_i} $$ is a non-degenerate elliptic operator, $g\in C(R^n)$ and the reaction term $f$ converges to $-\infty$ at a super-linear rate as $u\to\infty$. We give a sharp minimal growth condition on $f$, independent of $L$, in order that there exist a universal, a priori upper bound for all solutions to the above Cauch…
We prove maximal Schauder regularity for solutions to elliptic systems and Cauchy problems, in the space $C_b(\mathbb{R}^d;\mathbb{R}^m)$ of bounded and continuous functions, associated to a class of nonautonomous weakly coupled second-order elliptic operators $\bf{\mathcal A}$, with possibly unbounded coefficients and diffusion and drift terms which vary from equation to equation. We also provide estimates of the spatial derivatives up to the third-order and continuity properties both of the evolution operator ${\bf G}(t,s)$ associated to the Cauchy problem $D_t{\bf u}=\bf{\mathcal A}(t){\bf …
In this paper, we investigate the decay properties of the thermoelastic Timoshenko system with past history in the whole space where the thermal effects are given by Cattaneo and Fourier laws. We obtain that both systems, Timoshenko-Fourier and Timoshenko-Cattaneo, have the same rate of decay $(1 + t)^{-1/8}$ and satisfy the regularity-loss type property. Moreover, for the Cattaneo case, we show that the decay rate depends of a new condition on the wave speed of propagation $χ_{0,τ}$. This new condition has been recently introduced to study the asymptotic behavior in bounded domains, see for i…
We prove that, for first-order, fully nonlinear systems of partial differential equations, under an hypothesis of ellipticity for the principal symbol, the Cauchy problem has no solution within a range of Sobolev indices depending on the regularity of the initial datum. This gives a new and greatly detailed proof of a result of G. Métivier [{\it Remarks on the Cauchy problem}, 2005]. We then extend this result to systems experiencing a transition from hyperbolicity and ellipticity, in the spirit of recent work by N. Lerner, Y. Morimoto, and C.-J. Xu, [{\it Instability of the Cauchy-Kovalevskay…
In this paper, we prove global well-posedness and scattering of the Cauchy problem for the elliptic-elliptic Davey-Stewartson system (eeDS) for initial data $u_{0}\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ in the defocusing case and for $u_{0}\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ with mass below that of the ground state in the focusing case. This result resolves the large data problem at the scaling-critical regularity left open by Ghidaglia and Saut in their work initiating the mathematical study of the Cauchy problem for the system. Our proof uses the concentration compactness/rigidity road map of Kenig and Merle toge…
In this paper, we reformulate a mathematical model for the dynamics of an idealized electrostatically actuated MEMS device with two elastic membranes as an initial value problem for an abstract quasilinear evolution equation. Applying the Contraction Mapping Theorem, it is shown that the model is locally well-posed in time for any value of the source voltage of the device. In addition it is proven that the MEMS model considered here possesses global solutions for small source voltages whereas for large source voltages solutions of the model have a finite maximal existence time. Furthermore, we…
For first-order quasi-linear systems of partial differential equations, we formulate an assumption of a transition from initial hyperbolicity to ellipticity. This assumption bears on the principal symbol of the first-order operator. Under such an assumption, we prove a strong Hadamard instability for the associated Cauchy problem, namely an instantaneous defect of Hölder continuity of the flow from $G^σ$ to $L^2$, with $0 < σ< σ_0$, the limiting Gevrey index $σ_0$ depending on the nature of the transition. We restrict here to scalar transitions, and non-scalar transitions in which the boundary…
We quantify the uniqueness of continuation from Cauchy or interior data. Our approach consists in extending the existing results in the linear case. As by product we obtain a new stability estimate in the linear case. We also show the so-called strong uniqueness of continuation and the uniqueness of continuation from a set of positive measure. These results are derived by using a linearization procedure.
This paper is concerned with the positivity of solutions to the Cauchy problem for linear and nonlinear parabolic equations with the biharmonic operator as fourth order elliptic principal part. Generally, Cauchy problems for parabolic equations of fourth order have no positivity preserving property due to the change of sign of the fundamental solution. One has eventual local positivity for positive initial data, but on short time scales, one will in general have also regions of negativity. The first goal of this paper is to find sufficient conditions on initial data which ensure the existence …
We address various issues concerning the Cauchy problem for the Zakharov-Rubenchik system (known as the Benney-Roskes system in water waves theory), which models the interaction of short and long waves in many physical situations. Motivated by the transverse stability/instability of the one-dimensional solitary wave (line solitary), we study the Cauchy problem in the background of a line solitary wave.
We study the Cauchy problem for the generalized elliptic and non-elliptic derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equations, the existence of the scattering operators and the global well posedness of solutions with small data in Besov spaces and in modulation spaces are obtained. In one spatial dimension, we get the sharp well posedness result with small data in critical homogeneous Besov spaces. As a by-product, the existence of the scattering operators with small data is also shown. In order to show these results, the global versions of the estimates for the maximal functions on the elliptic and no…
We consider the nonstationary linearized Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain and first we prove a Carleman estimate with a regular weight function. Second we apply the Carleman estimate to a lateral Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes equations and prove the Hölder stability in determining the velocity and pressure field in an interior domain.
In the recent developments of regularization theory for inverse and ill-posed problems, a variational quasi-reversibility (QR) method has been designed to solve a class of time-reversed quasi-linear parabolic problems. Known as a PDE-based approach, this method relies on adding a suitable perturbing operator to the original problem and consequently, on gaining the corresponding fine stabilized operator, which leads us to a forward-like problem. In this work, we establish new conditional estimates for such operators to solve a prototypical Cauchy problem for elliptic equations. This problem is …
In this paper, we study the solitary wave and the Cauchy problem for Half-wave-Schrödinger equations in the plane. First, we show the existence and orbital stability of the ground states. Secondly, we prove that traveling waves exist and converge to zero as the velocity tends to $1$. Finally, we solve the Cauchy problem for initial data in $L^{2}_{x}H^{s}_{y}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$, with $s>\frac{1}{2}$.
In this paper, we would like to derive three-ball inequalities and propagation of smallness for the complex second order elliptic equation with discontinuous Lipschitz coefficients. As an application of such estimates, we study the size estimate problem by one pair of Cauchy data on the boundary. The main ingredient in the derivation of three-ball inequalities and propagation of smallness is a local Carleman proved in our recent paper [FVW].
This course is intended as an introduction to the analysis of elliptic partial differential equations. The objective is to provide a large overview of the different aspects of elliptic partial differential equations and their modern treatment. Besides variational and Schauder methods we study the unique continuation property and the stability for Cauchy problems. The derivation of the unique continuation property and the stability for Cauchy problems relies on a Carleman inequality. This inequality is efficient to establish three-ball type inequalities which are the main tool in the continuati…
The method of separation of variables can be used to solve many separable linear partial differential equations (LPDEs). Moreover, variable separation solutions usually are some trigonometric series. In the paper, base on some ideas of this method, we introduce a new technique to solve the Cauchy problem for some LPDEs with the initial conditions consisting of some trigonometric series, power series and exponential series. Then many LPDEs which are not separable are solved, such as some second order elliptic equations, Stokes equations and so on. In addition, the solutions of them can be expre…
In this work, we shall study the nonlinear inverse problems of recovering the Robin coefficients in elliptic and parabolic systems of second order, and establish their local Lipschitz stabilities. Some local Lipschitz stability was derived for an elliptic inverse Robin problem. We shall first restructure the arguments in \cite{chou04} for the local Lipschitz stability so that the stability follows from three basic conditions for the elliptic inverse Robin problem. The new arguments are then generalized to help establish a novel local Lipschitz stability for parabolic inverse Robin problems.
Ultrasound modulation of electrical or optical properties of materials offers the possibility to devise hybrid imaging techniques that combine the high electrical or optical contrast observed in many settings of interest with the high resolution of ultrasound. Mathematically, these modalities require that we reconstruct a diffusion coefficient $σ(x)$ for $x\in X$, a bounded domain in $\Rm^n$, from knowledge of $σ(x)|\nabla u|^2(x)$ for $x\in X$, where $u$ is the solution to the elliptic equation $-\nabla\cdotσ\nabla u=0$ in $X$ with $u=f$ on $\partial X$. This inverse problem may be recast as …
We give stability estimates in the Cauchy problem for general partial differential equation of the elliptic type similar to the Helmholtz equation. We do not impose any (pseudo)convexity assumptions on the domain or the operator. These conditional stability estimates are getting close to Lipschitz ones when the wave number/frequency is growing. We split solution into low and high frequency parts and impose constraints on the high frequency part only. We give logarithmic bounds on this high frequency part. Proofs use energy estimates and the FBI transform.
In this paper, we consider the nonisentropic ideal polytropic Navier-Stokes equations to the Cauchy problem. The asymptotic stability of contact discontinuity is established under the condition that the initial perturbations are partly small but the strength of contact discontinuity can be suitably large. With this conditions, the bounds of density and temperature can be obtained from the complicated structure of Navier-Stokes equations. The proofs are given by the elementary energy method.
