The Poincaré group can be interpreted as the group of isometries of a minkowskian space. This point of view suggests to consider the group of isometries of a given space as the suitable group to construct a gauge theory of gravity. We extend these ideas to the case of maximally symmetric spaces to reach a realistic theory including the presence of a cosmological constant. Introducing the concept of "minimal tetrads" we deduce Einstein gravity in the vacuum as a gauge theory of translations.
Assuming that the natural gauge group of gravity is given by the group of isometries of a given space, for a maximally symmetric space we derive a model in which gravity is essentially a gauge theory of translations. Starting from first principles we verify that a nonlinear realization of the symmetry provides the general structure of this gauge theory, leading to a simple choice of dynamical variables of the gravity field corresponding, at first order, to a diagonal matrix, whereas the non-diagonal elements contribute only to higher orders.
The internal structure of the tetrads in a Poincaré non linear gauge theory of gravity is considered. Minkowskian coordinates becomes dynamical degrees of freedom playing the role of Goldstone bosons of the translations. A critical length allowing a covariant expansion similar to the weak field approach is deduced, the zeroth order metric being maximally symmetric (Minkowskian in some cases).
We present a general scheme for the nonlinear gauge realizations of spacetime groups on coset spaces of the groups considered. In order to show the relevance of the method for the rigorous treatment of the translations in gravitational gauge theories, we apply it in particular to the affine group. This is an illustration of the family of spacetime symmetries having the form of a semidirect product $H\semidirect T$, where $H$ is the stability subgroup and $T$ are the translations . The translational component of the connection behaves like a true tensor under $H$ when coset realizations are inv…
Within a gauge formulation of 3+1 gravity relying on a nonlinear realization of the group of isometries of space-time, a natural expansion of the metric tensor arises and a simple choice of the gravity dynamical variables is possible. We show that the expansion parameter can be identified with the gravitational constant and that the first order depends only on a diagonal matrix in the ensuing perturbation approach. The explicit first order solution is calculated in the static isotropic case, and its general structure is worked out in the harmonic gauge.
The Hamiltonian analysis of the self-dual gauge gravity theory is carried out. The resulting canonical structure is equivalent to that of self-dual gravity.
The simplest i.e. the Abelian i.e. the commutative i.e. the integrable i.e. the flat and torsion-free i.e. the symmetric teleparallel affine connection has been considered in many recent works in the literature. Such an affine connection is characterised by the property that it can be vanished by a general coordinate transformation, by fixing the so called coincident gauge. This article focuses on the subtleties involved in the applications of the coincident gauge.
Some mathematical aspects of using the translation group as an internal symmetry group in a gauge field theory are presented and discussed. The traditional manner in which gravitation can be accounted for by the introduction of a global frame field on a parallelizable spacetime is reviewed. It is then discussed in the more general context of a global frame field on the bundle of linear frames. In the process, the elements of variational field theory for physical fields defined on G-structures are set down. It is suggested that it is probably more proper to attribute gravitation to a reduction …
Consistency of $GL(3,R)$ gauge theory of gravity coupled with an external electromagnetic field, is studied. It is shown that possible restrictions on Maxwell field can be avoided through introduction of auxiliary fields.
The gauge gravity action for general relativity in any dimension using a connection for the Euclidean or Poincaré group and a symmetry-breaking scalar field is written using a particularly simple matrix technique. A discrete version of the gauge gravity action for variables on a triangulated 3-manifold is given and it is shown how, for a certain class of triangulations of the three-sphere, the discrete quantum model this defines is equivalent to the Ponzano-Regge model of quantum gravity.
We consider conformal gravity as a gauge natural theory. We study its conservation laws and superpotentials. We also consider the Mannheim and Kazanas spherically symmetric vacuum solution and discuss conserved quantities associated to conformal and diffeomorphism symmetries.
We include a Chern-Simons term in a GL(3,R) gauge formulation of gravity with a cosmological contribution in 2+1 dimension and we explore consistence showing that excitations must be causal and standard topological massive gravity is recovered from this type of construction at the torsionless limit.
In this talk the description of gauge theories associated with internal symmetries is extended to the case in which the symmetry group is the space-time translation group (recovering Einstein's theory) using the standard jet-bundle formalism. We also reformulate these theories introducing the idea of jet-gauge and jet-diffeomorphism groups. Finally, we attempt to a simple, yet non-trivial, mixing of gravity and electromagnetism (or more general internal interaction) by turning to gauge symmetry a central extension of the Poincare group.
In this paper we investigate the properties of gauge-invariant coherent states for Loop Quantum Gravity, for the gauge group U(1). This is done by projecting the corresponding complexifier coherent states, which have been applied in numerous occasions to investigate the semiclassical limit of the kinematical sector, to the gauge-invariant Hilbert space. This being the first step to construct physical coherent states, we arrive at a set of gauge-invariant states that approximate well the gauge-invariant degrees of freedom of abelian LQG. Furthermore, these states turn out to encode explicit inf…
A systematic method is developed to study classical motion of a mass point in gravitational gauge field. First, the formulation of gauge theory of gravity in arbitrary curvilinear coordinates is given. Then in spherical coordinates system, a spherical symmetric solution of the field equation of gravitational gauge field is obtained, which is just the Schwarzschild solution. In gauge theory of gravity, the equation of motion of a classical mass point in gravitational gauge field is given by Newton's second law of motion. A relativistic form of the gravitational force on a mass point is deduced …
A gauge theory of quantum gravity is formulated, in which an internal, field dependent metric is introduced which non-linearly realizes the gauge fields on the non-compact group $SL(2,C)$, while linearly realizing them on $SU(2)$. Einstein's $SL(2,C)$ invariant theory of gravity emerges at low energies, since the extra degrees of freedom associated with the quadratic curvature and the internal metric only dominate at high energies. In a fixed internal metric gauge, only the the $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry is satisfied, the particle spectrum is identified and the Hamiltonian is shown to be bounded f…
The minimal coupling procedure, which is employed in standard Yang-Mills theories, appears to be ambiguous in the case of gravity. We propose a slight modification of this procedure, which removes the ambiguity. Our modification justifies some earlier results concerning the consequences of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. In particular, the predictions of the Einstein-Cartan theory with fermionic matter are rendered unique.
A covariant scheme for matter coupling with a GL(3,R) gauge formulation of gravity is studied. We revisit a known Yang-Mills type construction, where quadratical power of cosmological constant have to be considered in consistence with vacuum Einstein's gravity. Then, matter coupling with gravity is introduced and some constraints on fields and background appear. Finally we elucidate that introduction of auxiliary fields decreases the number of these constraints.
The Newman-Janis technique and the semi-classical Hamilton-Jacobi approach are two distinct phenomena that we apply in this paper to examine the Hawking temperature $(T_{H})$ for $4$-dimensional gauge super gravity like black hole with rotation parameters. First, using the Newman-Janis algorithmic approach, we compute the gauge super gravity like black holes solution. We use surface gravity to derive the $T_H$ for a gauge super gravity like black hole. In order to do this, we use the Lagrangian field equation in the background of generalized uncertainty principle, semi-classical Hamilton-Jacob…
We derive and calculate the space-time translational gauge identities in quantum Yang-Mills gravity with a general class of gauge conditions involving two arbitrary parameters. These identities of the Abelian group of translation are a generalization of Ward-Takahasi-Fradkin identities and important for general discussions of possible renormalization of Yang-Mills gravity with translational gauge symmetry. The gauge identities in Yang-Mills gravity with a general class of gauge conditions are substantiated by explicit calculations.
We consider the static elastoplastic theory of dislocations in an elastoplastic material. We use a Yang-Mills type Lagrangian (the teleparallel equivalent of Hilbert-Einstein Lagrangian) and some Lagrangians with anisotropic constitutive laws. The translational part of the generalized affine connection is utilized to describe the theory of elastoplasticity in the framework of a translation gauge theory. We obtain a system of Yang-Mills field equations which express the balance of force and moment.
This is the second paper concerning gauge-invariant coherent states for Loop Quantum Gravity. Here, we deal with the gauge group SU(2), this being a significant complication compared to the abelian U(1) case encountered in the previous article. We study gauge-invariant coherent states on certain special graphs by analytical and numerical methods. We find that their overlap is Gauss-peaked in gauge-invariant quantities, as long as states are not labeled by degenerate gauge orbits, i.e. points where the gauge-invariant configuration space has singularities. In these cases the overlaps are still …
We develop the gauge approach based on the Lorentz group to the gravity with torsion. With a Lagrangian quadratic in curvature we show that the Einstein-Hilbert action can be induced from a simple gauge model due to quantum corrections of torsion via formation of a gravito-magnetic condensate. An effective theory of cosmic knots at Planckian scale is proposed.
We formulate and explore the physical implications of a new translation gauge theory of gravity in flat space-time with a new Yang-Mills action, which involves quadratic gauge curvature and fermions. The theory shows that the presence of an "effective Riemann metric tensor" for the motions of classical particles and light rays is probably the manifestation of the translation gauge symmetry. In the post-Newtonian approximation of the tensor gauge field produced by the energy-momentum tensor, the results are shown to be consistent with classical tests of gravity and with the quadrupole radiation…
A description of motion is proposed, adapted to the composite bundle interpretation of Poincaré Gauge Theory. Reference frames, relative positions and time evolution are characterized in gauge-theoretical terms. The approach is illustrated by an appropriate formulation of the familiar example of orbital motion induced by Schwarzschild spacetime.
I review the state of the art of the investigation on the structure formation in $f(R)$-gravity based on the Covariant and Gauge Invariant approach to perturbations. A critical analysis of the results, in particular the presence of characteristic signature of these models, together with their meaning and their implication is given.
We propose a dynamic version of the three-dimensional translation gauge theory of dislocations. In our approach, we use the notions of the dislocation density and dislocation current tensors as translational field strengths and the corresponding response quantities (pseudomoment stress, dislocation momentum flux). We derive a closed system of field equations in a very elegant quasi-Maxwellian form as equations of motion for dislocations. In this framework, the dynamical Peach-Koehler force density is derived as well. Finally, the similarities and the differences between the Maxwell field theor…
The Teleparallel Equivalent to General Relativity (TEGR) is often presented as a gauge theory of translations, i.e., that uses \emph{only} the translation group $T_4 = (\setR^4, +)$ as its gauge group. In a previous work we argued against this \emph{translation-only} formalism on the basis of its mathematical shortcomings. We then provided an alternative proposal using a Cartan connection. Recently, a reply by some of the authors defending TEGR as a \emph{translation-only} gauge theory discussed our objections. Here, we first clarify our arguments, and give new proofs of some statements, to an…
In this paper we question the status of TEGR, the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity,as a gauge theory of translations. We observe that TEGR (in its usual translation-gauge view) does not seem to realize the generally admitted requirements for a gauge theory for some symmetry group $G$: namely it does not present a mathematical structure underlying the theory which relates to a principal $G$-bundle and the choice of a connection on it (the gauge field). We point out that, while it is usually presented as absent, the gauging of the Lorentz symmetry is actually present in the theory, …
We start by briefly reviewing the description of gravity theories as gauge theories in four dimensions. More specifically we recall the procedure leading to the results of General Relativity and Weyl Gravity in a gauge-theoretic manner. Then, after a brief reminder of the formulation of gauge theories on noncommutative spaces, we review our recent work, where gravity is constructed as a gauge theory on the fuzzy $dS_4$.
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1310.6560 [hep-th] and is also devoted to translation-invariant solutions of ghost-free massive gravity in its moving frame formulation. Here we consider a mass term which is linear in the vielbein (corresponding to a $β_3$ term in the 4D metric formulation) in addition to the cosmological constant. We determine explicitly the constraints, and from the initial value formulation show that the time-dependent solutions can have singularities at a finite time. Although the constraints give, as in the $β_1$ case, the correct number of degrees of freedom for a massive…
The infinite group of deformed diffeomorphisms of the spacetime continuum is put into the basis of the gauge theory of gravity. This gives rise to some new ways for unification of gravity with other gauge interactions.
The BRST quantizations of worldsheet gravity corresponding to final more acceptable derivative gauge and the standard conformal gauge are studied. We establish a mapping between these two gauges utilizing FFBRST formulation in standard way. Therefore, we are able to declare that the problems associated with Virasoro constraints are the gauge artifact.
In this paper the novel features of Yokoyama gaugeon formalism are stressed out for the theory of perturbative quantum gravity in Einstein curved spacetime. The quantum gauge transformations for the theory of perturbative gravity are demonstrated in the framework of gaugeon formalism. These quantum gauge transformations lead to renormalized gauge parameter. Further, we analyse the BRST symmetric gaugeon formalism which embeds more acceptable Kugo-Ojima subsidiary condition. Further, the BRST symmetry is made finite and field-dependent. Remarkably, the Jacobian of path integral under finite and…
In this paper we investigate the Yokoyama gaugeon formalism for perturbative quantum gravity in a general curved spacetime. Within the gaugeon formalism, we extend the configuration space by introducing vector gaugeon fields describing a quantum gauge degree of freedom. Such an extended theory of perturbative gravity admits quantum gauge transformations leading to a natural shift in the gauge parameter. Further we impose the Gupta-Bleuler type subsidiary condition to remove the unphysical gaugeon modes. To replace the Gupta-Bleuler type condition by more acceptable Kugo-Ojima type subsidiary c…
We study the gravity action built from two gauge fields corresponding to the generators of the conformal group. Starting with the action from which one can obtain Einstein gravity and conformal gravity upon imposing suitable constraints, we keep two independent gauge fields and integrate out the field corresponding to the generator of Lorentz transformations. We identify the two gauge fields with two vierbeins and perturb them around an Anti--de Sitter space. This gives the linearized equations that differ from both, Einstein gravity and conformal gravity linearized equations. We also study th…
We consider gravity from the quantum field theory point of view and introduce a natural way of coupling gravity to matter by following the gauge principle for particle interactions. The energy-momentum tensor for the matter fields is shown to be conserved and follows as a consequence of the dynamics in a spontaneously broken SO(3,2) gauge theory of gravity. All known interactions are described by the gauge principle at the microscopic level.
We study gauge properties of the general teleparallel theory of gravity, defined in the framework of Poincare gauge theory. It is found that the general theory is characterized by two kinds of gauge symmetries: a specific gauge symmetry that acts on Lagrange multipliers, and the standard Poincare gauge symmetry. The canonical generators of these symmetries are explicitly constructed and investigated.
Using gauge/gravity duality, we deduce several nontrivial consequences of quantum gravity from simple properties of the dual field theory. These include: (1) a version of cosmic censorship, (2) restrictions on evolution through black hole singularities, and (3) the exclusion of certain cosmological bounces. In the classical limit, the latter implies a new singularity theorem.
We review the emergence of gravity from gauge theory in the context of AdS/CFT duality. We discuss the evidence for the duality, its lessons for gravitational physics, generalizations, and open questions.
Differential geometric formulation of quantum gauge theory of gravity is studied in this paper. The quantum gauge theory of gravity which is proposed in the references hep-th/0109145 and hep-th/0112062 is formulated completely in the framework of traditional quantum field theory. In order to study the relationship between quantum gauge theory of gravity and traditional quantum gravity which is formulated in curved space, it is important to find the differential geometric formulation of quantum gauge theory of gravity. We first give out the correspondence between quantum gauge theory of gravity…
We review the basics and the current status of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. The general dynamical scheme of Poincaré gauge gravity (PG) is formulated, and its physical consequences are outlined. In particular, we discuss exact solutions with and without torsion, highlight the cosmological aspects, and consider the probing of the spacetime geometry.
The metric-affine gauge theory of gravity provides a broad framework in which gauge theories of gravity can be formulated. In this article we fit metric-affine gravity into the covariant BRST--antifield formalism in order to obtain gauge fixed quantum actions. As an example the gauge fixing of a general two-dimensional model of metric-affine gravity is worked out explicitly. The result is shown to contain the gauge fixed action of the bosonic string in conformal gauge as a special case.
Unimodular gravity can be formulated so that transverse diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations are symmetries of the theory. For this formulation of unimodular gravity, we work out the two-point and three-point $h_{μν}$ contributions to the on-shell classical gravity action in the leading approximation and for an Euclidean AdS background. We conclude that these contributions do not agree with those obtained by using General Relativity due to IR divergent contact terms. The subtraction of these IR divergent terms yields the same IR finite result for both unimodular gravity and General Relativ…
The quantization of the gravitational Chern-Simons coefficient is investigated in the framework of $ISO(2,1)$ gauge gravity. Some paradoxes involved are cured. The resolution is largely based on the inequivalence of $ISO(2,1)$ gauge gravity and the metric formulation. Both the Lorentzian scheme and the Euclidean scheme lead to the coefficient quantization, which means that the induced spin is not quite exotic in this context.
We compute the one-loop divergences in a higher-derivative theory of gravity including Ricci tensor squared and Ricci scalar squared terms, in addition to the Hilbert and cosmological terms, on an (generally off-shell) Einstein background. We work with a two-parameter family of parametrizations of the graviton field, and a two-parameter family of gauges. We find that there are some choices of gauge or parametrization that reduce the dependence on the remaining parameters. The results are invariant under a recently discovered "duality" that involves the replacement of the densitized metric by a…
Diffeomorphisms and an internal symmetry (e.g., local Lorentz invariance) are typically regarded as the symmetries of any geometrical gravity theory, including general relativity. In the first-order formalism, diffeomorphisms can be thought of as a derived symmetry from the so-called local translations, which have improved properties. In this work, the algebra of an arbitrary internal symmetry and the local translations is obtained for a generic gauge theory of gravity, in any spacetime dimensions, and coupled to matter fields. It is shown that this algebra closes off shell suggesting that the…
We consider the harmonic gauge condition in linearized gravity, seen as a gauge theory for a symmetric tensor field. Once the harmonic gauge condition is implemented, as customary, according to the Faddeev-Popov procedure, the gauge fixed action still depends on one gauge parameter. Consequently, the harmonic gauge appears to be a class of conditions, rather than a particular one. This allows to give a physical motivation for the covariant harmonic gauge(s), which emerges when the gravitational perturbation is given a mass term. In fact, for a particular choice of harmonic gauge, we find a the…
It is well known that a theory with explicit Lorentz violation is not invariant under diffeomorphisms. On the other hand, for geometrical theories of gravity, there are alternative transformations, which can be best defined within the first-order formalism, and that can be regarded as a set of improved diffeomorphisms. These symmetries are known as local translations and, among other features, they are Lorentz covariant off shell. It is thus interesting to study if theories with explicit Lorentz violation are invariant under local translations. In this work, an example of such a theory, known …
We propose a spin foam model for pure gauge fields coupled to Riemannian quantum gravity in four dimensions. The model is formulated for the triangulation of a four-manifold which is given merely combinatorially. The Riemannian Barrett--Crane model provides the gravity sector of our model and dynamically assigns geometric data to the given combinatorial triangulation. The gauge theory sector is a lattice gauge theory living on the same triangulation and obtains from the gravity sector the geometric information which is required to calculate the Yang--Mills action. The model is designed so that…
As the long wavelength limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the gravity/fluid correspondence has been shown to be a useful tool for extracting properties of the fluid on the boundary dual to the gravity in the bulk. In this paper, after briefly reviewing the algorithm of gravity/fluid correspondence, we discuss the results of its application on bulk gravity with a $U(1)$ gauge field. In the presence of a $U(1)$ gauge field, the dual fluid possesses more interesting properties such as its charge current. Furthermore, an external field $A_μ^{ext}$ could affect the charge current, and the $U(1)$ …
