We propose a dynamic version of the three-dimensional translation gauge theory of dislocations. In our approach, we use the notions of the dislocation density and dislocation current tensors as translational field strengths and the corresponding response quantities (pseudomoment stress, dislocation momentum flux). We derive a closed system of field equations in a very elegant quasi-Maxwellian form as equations of motion for dislocations. In this framework, the dynamical Peach-Koehler force density is derived as well. Finally, the similarities and the differences between the Maxwell field theory and the dislocation gauge theory are presented.
In this letter we discuss the Higgs mechanism in the linear and static translational gauge theory of dislocations. We investigate the role of the Nambu-Goldstone field and the Proca field in the dislocation gauge theory. In addition, we give the constitutive relations for (homogeneous) anisotropic, hemitropic and isotropic materials and also stress function tensors for the gauge theory of dislocations.
The aim of this paper is to provide new results and insights for a screw dislocation in functionally graded media within the gauge theory of dislocations. We present the equations of motion for dislocations in inhomogeneous media. We specify the equations of motion for a screw dislocation in a functionally graded material. The material properties are assumed to vary exponentially along the x and y-directions. In the present work we give the analytical gauge field theoretic solution to the problem of a screw dislocation in inhomogeneous media. Using the dislocation gauge approach, rigorous anal…
A (linear) nonsingular solution for the edge dislocation in the translational gauge theory of defects is presented. The stress function method is used and a modified stress function is obtained. All field quantities are globally defined and the solution agrees with the classical solution for the edge dislocation in the far field. The components of the stress, strain, distortion and displacement field are also defined in the dislocation core region and they have no singularity there. The dislocation density, moment and couple stress for an edge dislocation are calculated. The solution for the s…
In this paper we present the equations of motion of a moving screw dislocation in the framework of the translation gauge theory of dislocations. In the gauge field theoretical formulation, a dislocation is a massive gauge field. We calculate the gauge field theoretical solutions of a uniformly moving screw dislocation. We give the subsonic and supersonic solutions. Thus, supersonic dislocations are not forbidden from the field theoretical point of view. We show that the elastic divergences at the dislocation core are removed. We also discuss the Mach cones produced by supersonic screw dislocat…
In 1922, Cartan introduced in differential geometry, besides the Riemannian curvature, the new concept of torsion. He visualized a homogeneous and isotropic distribution of torsion in three dimensions (3d) by the "helical staircase", which he constructed by starting from a 3d Euclidean space and by defining a new connection via helical motions. We describe this geometric procedure in detail and define the corresponding connection and the torsion. The interdisciplinary nature of this subject is already evident from Cartan's discussion, since he argued - but never proved - that the helical stair…
We investigate the nonuniform motion of a straight screw dislocation in infinite media in the framework of the translational gauge theory of dislocations. The equations of motion are derived for an arbitrary moving screw dislocation. The fields of the elastic velocity, elastic distortion, dislocation density and dislocation current surrounding the arbitrarily moving screw dislocation are derived explicitely in the form of integral representations. We calculate the radiation fields and the fields depending on the dislocation velocities.
A continual model of non-singular screw dislocation lying along a straight infinitely long circular cylinder is investigated in the framework of translational gauge approach with the Hilbert--Einstein gauge Lagrangian. The stress--strain constitutive law implies the elastic energy of isotropic continuum which includes the terms of second and third orders in the strain components. The Einstein-type gauge equation with the elastic stress tensor as a driving source is investigated perturbatively, and second order contribution to the stress potential of the modified screw dislocation is obtained. …
T(3)-gauge model of defects based on the gauge Lagrangian quadratic in the gauge field strength is considered. The equilibrium equation of the medium is fulfilled by the double curl Kroner's ansatz for stresses. The problem of replication of the static edge dislocation along third axis is analysed under a special, though conventional, choice of this ansatz. The translational gauge equation is shown to constraint the functions parametrizing the ansatz (the stress functions) so that the resulting stress component $σ_{3 3}$ is not that of the edge defect. Another translational gauge equation with…
We derive conservation and balance laws for the translational gauge theory of dislocations by applying Noether's theorem. We present an improved translational gauge theory of dislocations including the dislocation density tensor and the dislocation current tensor. The invariance of the variational principle under the continuous group of transformations is studied. Through Lie's-infinitesimal invariance criterion we obtain conserved translational and rotational currents for the total Lagrangian made up of an elastic and dislocation part. We calculate the broken scaling current. Looking only on …
We investigate the T(3)-gauge theory of static dislocations in continuous solids. We use the most general linear constitutive relations bilinear in the elastic distortion tensor and dislocation density tensor for the force and pseudomoment stresses of an isotropic solid. The constitutive relations contain six material parameters. In this theory both the force and pseudomoment stresses are asymmetric. The theory possesses four characteristic lengths l1, l2, l3 and l4 which are given explicitely. We first derive the three-dimensional Green tensor of the master equation for the force stresses in …
A translational gauge approach of the Einstein type is proposed for obtaining the stresses that are due to non-singular screw dislocation. The stress distribution of second order around the screw dislocation is classically known for the hollow circular cylinder with traction-free external and internal boundaries. The inner boundary surrounds the dislocation's core, which is not captured by the conventional solution. The present gauge approach enables us to continue the classically known quadratic stresses inside the core. The gauge equation is chosen in the Hilbert--Einstein form, and it plays…
We consider a wedge dislocation in the framework of elasticity theory and the geometric theory of defects. We show that the geometric theory reproduces quantitatively all the results of elasticity theory in the linear approximation. The coincidence is achieved by introducing a postulate that the vielbein satisfying the Einstein equations must also satisfy the gauge condition, which in the linear approximation leads to the elasticity equations for the displacement vector field. The gauge condition depends on the Poisson ratio, which can be experimentally measured. This indicates the existence o…
In this paper, we present a phase field model for the self-climb motion of prismatic dislocation loops via vacancy pipe diffusion driven by elastic interactions. This conserved dynamics model is developed under the framework of the Cahn-Hilliard equation with incorporation of the climb force on dislocations, and is based on the dislocation self-climb velocity formulation established in Ref.[1]. The phase field model has the advantage of being able to handle the topological and geometrical changes automatically during the simulations. Asymptotic analysis shows that the proposed phase field mode…
We develop a mesoscopic dislocation dynamics model for vacancy-assisted dislocation climb by upscalings from a stochastic model on the atomistic scale. Our models incorporate microscopic mechanisms of (i) bulk diffusion of vacancies, (ii) vacancy exchange dynamics between bulk and dislocation core, (iii) vacancy pipe diffusion along the dislocation core, and (iv) vacancy attachment-detachment kinetics at jogs leading to the motion of jogs. Our mesoscopic model consists of the vacancy bulk diffusion equation and a dislocation climb velocity formula. The effects of pipe diffusion and the jog str…
It has been shown in experiments that self-climb of prismatic dislocation loops by pipe diffusion plays important roles in their dynamical behaviors, e.g., coarsening of prismatic loops upon annealing, as well as the physical and mechanical properties of materials with irradiation. In this paper, we show that this dislocation dynamics self-climb formulation that we derived in Ref. [1] is able to quantitatively describe the properties of self-climb of prismatic loops that were observed in experiments and atomistic simulations. This dislocation dynamics formulation applies to self-climb by pipe …
In this paper, we present a continuum model for the dynamics of low angle grain boundaries in two dimensions based on the motion of constituent dislocations of the grain boundaries. The continuum model consists of an equation for the motion of grain boundaries (i.e., motion of the constituent dislocations in the grain boundary normal direction) and equations for the dislocation structure evolution on the grain boundaries. This model is derived from the discrete dislocation dynamics model. The long-range elastic interaction between dislocations is included in the continuum model, which ensures …
We present a theory of deformation potential carrier scattering of two-dimensional electron gases from the strain fields surrounding dislocations. The results are applied to study the transport characteristics in III-V nitride two-dimensional electron gases in Al(Ga)N/GaN quantum wells. A hypothetical charged core has been associated as the {\em only} scattering potential for analyzing experimental results for transport studies of the nitrides; we critically examine this assumption in light of our results of strain field scattering. By computing the effect of all possible scattering mechanisms…
A description of dislocations and disclinations defects in terms of Riemann--Cartan geometry is given, with the curvature and torsion tensors being interpreted as the surface densities of the Frank and Burgers vectors, respectively. A new free energy expression describing the static distribution of defects is presented, and equations of nonlinear elasticity theory are used to specify the coordinate system. Application of the Lorentz gauge leads to equations for the principal chiral SO(3)-field. In the defect-free case, the geometric model reduces to elasticity theory for the displacement vecto…
Because of the enormous range of time and space scales involved in dislocation dynamics, plastic modeling at macroscale requires a continuous formulation. In this paper, we present a rigorous formulation of the transition between the discrete, where plastic flow is resolved at the scale of individual dislocations, and the continuum, where dislocations are represented by densities. First, we focus on the underlying coarse-graining procedure and show that the emerging correlation-induced stresses are scale-dependent. Each of these stresses can be expanded into the sum of two components. The firs…
An action functional is developed for nonlinear dislocation dynamics. This serves as a first step towards the application of effective field theory in physics to evaluate its potential in obtaining a macroscopic description of dislocation dynamics describing the plasticity of crystalline solids. Connections arise between the continuum mechanics and material science of defects in solids, effective field theory techniques in physics, and fracton tensor gauge theories. The scheme that emerges from this work for generating a variational principle for a nonlinear pde system is general, as is demons…
We study electronic and thermoelectric transport in a type I Weyl semimetal nanojunction, with a torsional dislocation defect, in the presence of an external magnetic field parallel to the dislocation axis. The defect is modeled in a cylindrical geometry, as a combination of a gauge field accounting for torsional strain, and a delta-potential barrier for the lattice mismatch effect. In the Landauer formalism, we find that due to the combination of strain and magnetic field, the electric current exhibits chiral valley-polarization, and the conductance displays the signature of Landau levels. We…
In this work the fundamentals of gradient field theories are presented and reviewed. In particular, the theories of gradient magnetostatics and gradient elasticity are investigated and compared. For gradient magnetostatics, non-singular expressions for the magnetic vector gauge potential, the Biot-Savart law, the Lorentz force and the mutual interaction energy of two electric current loops are derived and discussed. For gradient elasticity, non-singular forms of all dislocation key-formulas (Burgers equation, Mura equation, Peach-Koehler stress equation, Peach-Koehler force equation, and mutua…
Dislocation pileups directly impact the material properties of crystalline solids through the arrangement and collective motion of interacting dislocations. We study the statistical mechanics of these ordered defect structures embedded in two dimensional crystals, where the dislocations themselves form one-dimensional lattices. In particular, pileups exemplify a new class of inhomogeneous crystals characterized by spatially varying lattice spacings. By analytically formulating key statistical quantities and comparing our theory to numerical experiments using an intriguing mapping of dislocatio…
