The quantum analogs of the derivatives with respect to coordinates q_k and momenta p_k are commutators with operators P_k and $Q_k. We consider quantum analogs of fractional Riemann-Liouville and Liouville derivatives. To obtain the quantum analogs of fractional Riemann-Liouville derivatives, which are defined on a finite interval of the real axis, we use a representation of these derivatives for analytic functions. To define a quantum analog of the fractional Liouville derivative, which is defined on the real axis, we can use the representation of the Weyl quantization by the Fourier transformation.
Weyl-Underhill-Emmrich (WUE) quantization and its generalization are considered. It is shown that an axiomatic definition of the Stratonovich-Weyl (SW) quantizer leads to severe difficulties. Quantization on the cylinder within the WUE formalism is discussed.
We present a list of formulae useful for Weyl-Heisenberg integral quantizations, with arbitrary weight, of functions or distributions on the plane. Most of these formulae are known, others are original. The list encompasses particular cases like Weyl-Wigner quantization (constant weight) and coherent states (CS) or Berezin quantization (Gaussian weight). The formulae are given with implicit assumptions on their validity on appropriate space(s) of functions (or distributions). One of the aims of the document is to accompany a work in progress on Weyl-Heisenberg integral quantization of dynamics…
We apply the Born-Jordan and Weyl quantization formulas for polynomials in canonical coordinates to the constants of motion of some examples of the superintegrable 2D anisotropic harmonic oscillator. Our aim is to study the behaviour of the algebra of the constants of motion after the different quantization procedures. In the examples considered, we have that the Weyl formula always preserves the original superintegrable structure of the system, while the Born-Jordan formula, when producing different operators than the Weyl's one, does not.
The Weyl quantization of classical observables on the torus (as phase space) without regularity assumptions is explicitly computed. The equivalence class of symbols yielding the same Weyl operator is characterized. The Heisenberg equation for the dynamics of general quantum observables is written through the Moyal brackets on the torus and the support of the Wigner transform is characterized. Finally, a dequantization procedure is introduced that applies, for instance, to the Pauli matrices. As a result we obtain the corresponding classical symbols.
A generalized Weyl quantization formalism for a particle on the circle investigated in \cite{1} is developed. A Wigner function for the state $\hat{\varrho}$ and the kernel $\mathcal{K}$ for a particle on the circle is defined and its properties are analyzed. Then it is shown how this Wigner function can be easily modified to give the number-phase Wigner function in quantum optics. Some examples of such number-phase Wigner function are considered.
A time of arrival (TOA) operator that is conjugate with the system Hamiltonian was constructed by Galapon without canonical quantization in [J. Math. Phys. \textbf{45}, 3180 (2004)]. The constructed operator was expressed as an infinite series but only the leading term was investigated which was shown to be equal to the Weyl-quantized TOA-operator for entire analytic potentials. In this paper, we give a full account of the said TOA-operator by explicitly solving all the terms in the expansion. We interpret the terms beyond the leading term as the quantum corrections to the Weyl quantization of…
Generalized Weyl quantization formalism for the cylindrical phase space $S^1 \times \mathbb{R}^1$ is developed. It is shown that the quantum observables relevant to the phase of linear harmonic oscillator or electromagnetic field can be represented within this formalism by the self-adjoint operators on the Hilbert space $L^2(S^1)$.
We prove that, for the moduli space of flat SU(2)-connections on the torus, the Weyl quantization and the quantization using the quantum group of SL(2,C) are unitarily equivalent. This is done by comparing the matrices of the operators associated by the two quantization to cosine functions. We also discuss the *-product of the Weyl quantization and show that it satisfies the product-to-sum formula for noncommutative cosines on the noncommutative torus.
This course is aimed at graduate students in physics in mathematics and designed to give a comprehensive introduction to Weyl quantization and semiclassics via Egorov's theorem. Chapter 2 gives a quick overview of classical and quantum mechanics on R^d. Some mathematical preliminaries concerning Hilbert space theory, operator theory and tempered distributions are detailed in Chapters 3-5. Weyl quantization and semiclassics are the content of Chapters 6 and 7. Finally, an application of Weyl calculus to Born-Oppenheimer systems is discussed in Chapter 8.
In this paper, we give a correspondence between the Berezin-Toeplitz and the complex Weyl quantizations of the torus $ \mathbb{T}^2$. To achieve this, we use the correspondence between the Berezin-Toeplitz and the complex Weyl quantizations of the complex plane and a relation between the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of a periodic symbol on the real phase space $\mathbb{R}^2$ and the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of a symbol on the torus $ \mathbb{T}^2 $.
A. Weinstein has conjectured a nice looking formula for a deformed product of functions on a hermitian symmetric space of non-compact type. We derive such a formula for symmetric symplectic spaces using ideas from geometric quantization and prequantization of symplectic groupoids. We compute the result explicitly for the natural 2-dimensional symplectic manifolds: the euclidean plane, the sphere and the hyperbolic plane. For the euclidean plane we obtain the well known Moyal-Weyl product. The other cases show that Weinstein's original idea should be interpreted with care. We conclude with comm…
There has recently been evidence for replacing the usual Weyl quantization procedure by the older and much less known Born-Jordan rule. In this paper we discuss this quantization procedure in detail and relate it to recent results of Boggiato, De Donno, and Oliaro on the Cohen class. We begin with a discussion of some properties of Shubin's $τ$-pseudo-differential calculus, which allows us to show that the Born-Jordan quantization of a symbol $a$ is the average for $τ\in\lbrack0,1]$ of the $τ$-operators with symbol $a$. We study the properties of the Born-Jordan operators, including their symp…
The raising operator relating adjacent bound states for the general, non-symmetric Rosen-Morse potential is constructed explicitly. It is demonstrated that, in constrast to the symmetric (modified Pöschl-Teller) potential, the operator is non-local and must be expressed applying techniques from fractional calculus. A recurrence relation between adjacent states is derived applying the Weyl fractional integral, which, in contrast to standard recurrence relations, allows the efficient numerical computation of the coefficients of all Jacobi polynomials necessary for the evaluation of the bound sta…
Our paper is devoted to the oscillator semigroup, which can be defined as the set of operators whose kernels are centered Gaussian. Equivalently, they can be defined as the the Weyl quantization of centered Gaussians. We use the Weyl symbol as the main parametrization of this semigroup. We derive formulas for the tracial and operator norm of the Weyl quantization of Gaussians. We identify the subset of Gaussians, which we call quantum degenerate, where these norms have a singularity.
We discuss how the existence of a regular Lagrangian description on the tangent bundle $TQ$ of some configuration space $Q$ allows for the construction of a linear structure on $TQ$ that can be considered as "adapted" to the given dynamical system. The fact then that many dynamical systems admit alternative Lagrangian descriptions opens the possibility to use the Weyl scheme to quantize the system in different non equivalent ways, "evading", so to speak, the von Neumann uniqueness theorem.
Elements of the quantization in field theory based on the covariant polymomentum Hamiltonian formalism (the De Donder-Weyl theory), a possibility of which was originally discussed in 1934 by Born and Weyl, are developed. The approach is based on a recently proposed graded Poisson bracket on differential forms in field theory (see e.g. hep-th/9709229). A covariant analogue of the Schrödinger equation for a hypercomplex wave function on the space of field and space-time variables is put forward. It is shown to lead to the De Donder-Weyl Hamilton-Jacobi equations in quasiclassical limit. A possib…
These notes merely intend to memorialize Souriau's overlooked achievements regarding geo\-metric quantization of Poincaré-elementary symplectic systems. Restricting attention to his model of massless, spin-$\half$, particles, we faithfully rephrase and expound here Sections (18.82)--(18.96) & (19.122)--(19.134) of his book \cite{SSD} edited in 1969. Missing details about the use of a preferred Poincaré-invariant polarizer are provided for completeness.
In this paper, we investigate the approximations of generalized Weyl fractional-order integrals in extreme value theory framework. We present three applications of our asymptotic results concerning the higher-order tail approximations of deflated risks as well as approximations of Haezendonck-Goovaerts and expectile risk measures. Illustration of the obtained results is done by various examples and some numerical analysis.
We study the existence of positive solution for the one dimensional Schrödinger equation with mixed Lioville-Weyl fractional derivatives \begin{eqnarray*}\label{Eq00} _{t}D_{\infty}^α({_{-\infty}}D_{t}^αu(t)) + V(t) u(t) = & f(u(t)),\;\;t\in \mathbb{R}\\ u\in H^α(\mathbb{R}).\nonumber \end{eqnarray*} Furthermore, we analyse radial symmetry property of these solutions. The proof is carried out by using variational methods jointly with comparison and rearrangement argument.
We study spectral asymptotics for a large class of differential operators on an open subset of $\R^d$ with finite volume. This class includes the Dirichlet Laplacian, the fractional Laplacian, and also fractional differential operators with non-homogeneous symbols. Based on a sharp estimate for the sum of the eigenvalues we establish the first term of the semiclassical asymptotics. This generalizes Weyl's law for the Laplace operator.
For any Lie groupoid $G$, the vector bundle $g^*$ dual to the associated Lie algebroid $g$ is canonically a Poisson manifold. The (reduced) C*-algebra of $G$ (as defined by A. Connes) is shown to be a strict quantization (in the sense of M. Rieffel) of $g^*$. This is proved using a generalization of Weyl's quantization prescription on flat space. Many other known strict quantizations are a special case of this procedure; on a Riemannian manifold, one recovers Connes' tangent groupoid as well as a recent generalization of Weyl's prescription. When $G$ is the gauge groupoid of a principal bundle…
One can argue that on flat space $\mathbb{R}^d$ the Weyl quantization is the most natural choice and that it has the best properties (e.g. symplectic covariance, real symbols correspond to Hermitian operators). On a generic manifold, there is no distinguished quantization, and a quantization is typically defined chart-wise. Here we introduce a quantization that, we believe, has the best properties for studying natural operators on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. It is a generalization of the Weyl quantization - we call it the balanced geodesic Weyl quantization. Among other things, we prove that …
A theory of nonunitary-invertible as well as unitary canonical transformations is formulated in the context of Weyl's phase space representations. Exact solutions of the transformation kernels and the phase space propagators are given for the three fundamental canonical maps as fractional-linear, gauge and contact (point) transformations. Under the nonlinear maps a phase space representation is mapped to another phase space representation thereby extending the standard concept of covariance. This extended covariance allows Dirac-Jordan transformation theory to naturally emerge from the Hilbert…
The Weyl correspondence and the related Wigner formalism lie at the core of traditional quantum mechanics. We discuss here an alternative quantization scheme, whose idea goes back to Born and Jordan, and which has recently been revived in another context, namely time-frequency analysis. We show that in particular the uncertainty principle does not enjoy full symplectic covariance properties in the Born and Jordan scheme, as opposed to what happens in the Weyl quantization.
We investigate the Weyl-Wigner-Gröenewold-Moyal, the Stratonovich and the Berezin group quantization schemes for the space-space noncommutative Heisenberg-Weyl group. We show that the $\star$-product for the deformed algebra of Weyl functions for the first scheme is different than that for the other two, even though their respective quantum mechanics' are equivalent as far as expectation values are concerned, provided that some additional criteria are imposed on the implementation of this process. We also show that it is the $\star$-product associated with the Stratonovich and the Berezin form…
In this paper we use techniques of geometric quantization to give a geometric interpretation of the Peter--Weyl theorem. We present a novel approach to half-form corrected geometric quantization in a specific type of non-Kähler polarizations and study one important class of examples, namely cotangent bundles of compact semi-simple groups $K$. Our main results state that this canonically defined polarization occurs in the geodesic boundary of the space of $K\times K$-invariant Kähler polarizations equipped with Mabuchi's metric, and that its half-form corrected quantization is isomorphic to the…
The De Donder-Weyl (DW) covariant Hamiltonian formulation of Palatini first-order Lagrangian of vielbein (tetrad) gravity and its precanonical quantization are presented. No splitting into the space and time is required in this formulation. Our recent generalization of Dirac brackets is used to treat the second class primary constraints appearing in the DW Hamiltonian formulation and to find the fundamental brackets. Quantization of the latter yields the representation of vielbeins as differential operators with respect to the spin connection coefficients, and the Dirac-like precanonical Schrö…
Adopting a particular approach to fractional calculus, this paper sets out to build up a consistent extension of the Faddeev-Jackiw (or Symplectic) algorithm to carry out the quantization procedure of coarse-grained models in the standard canonical way. In our treatment, we shall work with the Modified Riemman Liouville (MRL) approach for fractional derivatives, where the chain rule is as efficient as it is in the standard differential calculus. We still present a case where we consider the situation of charged particles moving on a plane with velocity $\dot{r}$, subject to an external and int…
The main goal of this work is to perform a nonolonomic deformation (Fedosov type) quantization of fractional Lagrange geometries. The constructions are provided for a (fractional) almost Kahler model encoding equivalently all data for fractional Euler-Lagrange equations with Caputo fractional derivative. For homogeneous generating Finsler functions, the geometric models contain quantum versions of fractional Finsler spaces. The scheme can be generalized for fractional Hamilton systems and various models of fractional classical and quantum gravity. We conclude that the approach with Caputo frac…
$C^*$-algebraic Weyl quantization is extended by allowing also degenerate pre-symplectic forms for the Weyl relations with infinitely many degrees of freedom, and by starting out from enlarged classical Poisson algebras. A powerful tool is found in the construction of Poisson algebras and non-commutative twisted Banach-$*$-algebras on the stage of measures on the not locally compact test function space. Already within this frame strict deformation quantization is obtained, but in terms of Banach-$*$-algebras instead of $C^*$-algebras. Fourier transformation and representation theory of the mea…
A fractional Hamiltonian formalism is introduced for the recent combined fractional calculus of variations. The Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equation is generalized to be applicable for systems containing combined Caputo fractional derivatives. The obtained results provide tools to carry out the quantization of nonconservative problems through combined fractional canonical equations of Hamilton type.
A generalization of canonical quantization which maps a dynamical operator to a dynamical superoperator is suggested. Weyl quantization of dynamical operator, which cannot be represented as Poisson bracket with some function, is considered. The usual Weyl quantization of observables is a specific case of suggested quantization. This approach allows to define consistent quantization procedure for non-Hamiltonian and dissipative systems. Examples of the harmonic oscillator with friction (generalized Lorenz-Rossler-Leipnik-Newton equation), the Fokker-Planck-type system and Lorenz-type system are…
In this paper we construct a Markov process which has as invariant measure the fractional Edwards measure based on a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion, with Hurst index $H$ in the case of $Hd=1$. We use the theory of classical Dirichlet forms. However since the corresponding self-intersection local time of fractional Brownian motion is not Meyer-Watanabe differentiable in this case, we show the closability of the form via quasi translation invariance of the fractional Edwards measure along shifts in the corresponding fractional Cameron-Martin space.
Weyl quantization and related semiclassical techniques can be used to study conduction properties of crystalline solids subjected to slowly-varying, external electromagnetic fields. The case where the external magnetic field is constant, is not covered by existing theory as proofs involving usual Weyl calculus break down. This is the regime of the so-called quantum Hall effect where quantization of transverse conductance is observed. To rigorously derive semiclassical equations of motion, one needs to systematically develop a magnetic Weyl calculus which contains a semiclassical parameter. Mat…
We prove the existence of a diffusion process whose invariant measure is the fractional polymer or Edwards measure for fractional Brownian motion in dimension $d\in\mathbb{N}$ with Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$ fulfilling $dH < 1$. The diffusion is constructed via Dirichlet form techniques in infinite dimensional (Gaussian) analysis. Moreover, we show that the process is invariant under time translations.
The relation between the Moyal-Weyl deformation quantization and quasiconformal mappings of Riemann surfaces of complex analysis are shown by several examples.
The theme of this work is that the theory of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field can be generalized to a large class of operators if one uses an extended a class of Weyl operators which we call "Landau--Weyl pseudodifferential operators". The link between standard Weyl calculus and Landau--Weyl calculus is made explicit by the use of an infinite family of intertwining "windowed wavepacket transforms"; this makes possible the use of the theory of modulation spaces to study various regularity properties. Our techniques allow us not only to recover easily the eigenvalues and eigenfuncti…
We present a short review of the approach to quantization known as strict (deformation) quantization, which can be seen as a generalization of the Weyl-Moyal quantization. We include examples and comments on the process of quantization.
Physical problems for which the existence of non-trivial topological Pauli phase (i.e. fractional quantization of angular orbital angular momenta that is possible in 2D case) is essential are discussed within the framework of two-dimensional Helmholtz, Schroedinger and Dirac equations. As examples in classical field theory we consider a "wedge problem" -- a description of a field generated by a point charge between two conducting half-planes -- and a Fresnel diffraction from knife-edge. In few-electron circular quantum dots the choice between integer and half-integer quantization of orbital an…
In this paper, we investigate the existence of infinitely many solutions for the following fractional Hamiltonian systems: \begin{eqnarray}\label{eq00} _{t}D_{\infty}^α(_{-\infty}D_{t}^αu(t)) + L(t)u(t) = & \nabla W(t,u(t))\\ u\in H^α(\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{R}^{N}).\nonumber \end{eqnarray} where $α\in (1/2, 1)$, $t\in \mathbb{R}$, $u\in \mathbb{R}^{n}$, $L\in C(\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{R}^{n^2})$ is a symmetric and positive definite matrix for all $t\in \mathbb{R}$, $W\in C^{1}(\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}^{n}, \mathbb{R})$, and $\nabla W$ is the gradient of $W$ at $u$. The novelty of this paper is tha…
This article is concerned with compositions in the context of three standard quantizations in the Fock space framework, namely, anti-Wick, Wick and Weyl quantizations. The first one is a composition of states and is closely related to the standard scattering identification operator encountered in Quantum Electrodynamics for time dynamics issues. Anti-Wick quantization and Segal Bargmann transforms are implied there for that purpose. The other compositions are for observables (operators in some specific classes) for the Wick and Weyl symbols. For the Wick symbol of the composition of two operat…
We use the extension problem proposed by Caffarelli and Silvestre to study the quantization of a scalar nonlocal quantum field theory built out of the fractional Laplacian. We show that the quantum behavior of such a nonlocal field theory in $d$-dimensions can be described in terms of a local action in $d+1$ dimensions which can be quantized using the canonical operator formalism though giving up local commutativity. In particular, we discuss how to obtain the two-point correlation functions and the vacuum energy density of the nonlocal fractional theory as a brane limit of the bulk correlator…
So far, it is not well known how to deal with dissipative systems. There are many paths of investigation in the literature and none of them present a systematic and general procedure to tackle the problem. On the other hand, it is well known that the fractional formalism is a powerful alternative when treating dissipative problems. In this paper we propose a detailed way of attacking the issue using fractional calculus to construct an extension of the Dirac brackets in order to carry out the quantization of nonconservative theories through the standard canonical way. We believe that using the …
The formalism of quantization deformation is reviewed and the Weyl-Moyal like deformation is applied to systematic construction of the field and lattice integrable soliton systems from Poisson algebras of dispersionless systems.
Let $S$ be a spinor bundle of a pseudo-Euclidean vector bundle $(E,\mathrm{g})$ of even rank. We introduce a new filtration on the algebra $\mathcal{D}(M,S)$ of differential operators on $S$. As main property, the associated graded algebra $\mathrm{gr}\mathcal{D}(M,S)$ is isomorphic to the algebra $\mathcal{O}(\mathcal{M})$ of functions on $\mathcal{M}$, where $\mathcal{M}$ is the symplectic graded manifold of degree $2$ canonically associated to $(E,\mathrm{g})$. Accordingly, we define the Weyl quantization on $\mathcal{M}$ as a map $\mathcal{WQ}_\hbar:\mathcal{O}(\mathcal{M})\to\mathcal{D}(M…
We analyse a diffusion process whose invariant measure is the fractional polymer or Edwards measure for fractional Brownian motion in dimension $d\in\mathbb{N}$ with Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$ fulfilling $dH < 1$. We make use of a construction of the diffusion via Dirichlet form techniques in infinite dimensional (Gaussian) analysis. By providing a Fukushima decomposition for the stochastic quantization of the fractional Edwards measure we prove that the constructed process solves weakly a stochastic differential equation in infinite dimension for quasi-all starting points. Moreover, the solu…
We examine the Schrodinger algebra in the framework of Berezin quantization. First, the Heisenberg-Weyl and sl(2) algebras are studied. Then the Berezin representation of the Schrodinger algebra is computed. In fact, the sl(2) piece of the Schrodinger algebra can be decoupled from the Heisenberg component. This is accomplished using a special realization of the sl(2) component that is built from the Heisenberg piece as the quadratic elements in the Heisenberg-Weyl enveloping algebra. The structure of the Schrodinger algebra is revealed in a lucid way by the form of the Berezin representation.
We study the quantum theory of two-dimensional electrons in a magnetic field and an electric field generated by a homogeneous background. The dynamics separates into a microscopic and macroscopic mode. The latter is a circular Hall current which is described by a chiral quantum field theory. It is shown how in this second quantized picture a Laughlin-type wave function emerges.
