Each subset $E\subset\Bbb N$ is realized as the set of essential values of the multiplicity function for the Koopman operator of an ergodic conservative infinite measure preserving transformation.
We introduce high staircase infinite measure preserving transformations and prove that they are mixing under a restricted growth condition. This is used to (i) realize each subset $E\subset\Bbb N\cup\{\infty\}$ as the set of essential values of the multiplicity function for the Koopman operator of a mixing ergodic infinite measure preserving transformation, (ii) construct mixing power weakly mixing infinite measure preserving transformations, (iii) construct mixing Poissonian automorphisms with a simple spectrum, etc.
Let $E$ be a subset of positive integers such that $E\cap\{1,2\}\ne\emptyset$. A weakly mixing finite measure preserving flow $T=(T_t)_{t\in\Bbb R}$ is constructed such that the set of spectral multiplicities (of the corresponding Koopman unitary representation generated by $T$) is $E$. Moreover, for each non-zero $t\in\Bbb R$, the set of spectral multiplicities of the transformation $T_t$ is also $E$. These results are partly extended to actions of some other locally compact second countable Abelian groups.
Given a transformation $T$ of a standard measure space $(X,μ)$, let $\Cal M(T)$ denote the set of spectral multiplicities of the Koopman operator $U_T$ defined in $L^2(X,μ)\ominus\Bbb C$ by $U_Tf:=f\circ T$. It is discussed in this survey paper which subsets of $\Bbb N\cup\{\infty\}$ are realizable as $\Cal M(T)$ for various $T$: ergodic, weakly mixing, mixing, Gaussian, Poisson, ergodic infinite measure preserving, etc. The corresponding constructions are considered in detail. Generalizations to actions of Abelian locally compact second countable groups are also discussed.
Let G be a locally compact second countable Abelian group. Given a measure preserving action T of G on a standard probability space, let M(T) denote the set of essential values of the spectral multiplicity function of the Koopman unitary representation of G associated with T. In the case when G is either a discrete countable Abelian group or R^n, n>0, it is shown that the sets of the form {p,q,pq}, {p,q,r,pq,pr,qr,pqr} etc. or any multiplicative (and additive) subsemigroup of N are realizable as M(T) for a weakly mixing G-action T.
We define "slow" entropy invariants for Z^2 actions on infinite measure spaces, which measures growth of itineraries at subexponential scales. We use this to construct infinite-measure preserving Z^2 actions which cannot be realized as a group of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold preserving a Borel measure, contrary to the situation for Z-actions, where every infinite-measure preserving action can be realized in this way.
We prove that multiple-recurrence and polynomial-recurrence of invertible infinite measure preserving transformations are both properties which pass to extensions.
We study the behavior of maximal multiplicities $mm (R^n)$ for the powers of a weakly mixing automorphism $R$. For some special infinite set $A$ we show the existence of a weakly mixing rank-one automorphism $R$ such that $mm (R^n)=n$ and $mm(R^{n+1}) =1$ for all $n\in A$. Moreover, the cardinality $cardm(R^n)$ of the set of spectral multiplicities for $R^n$ is not bounded. We have $cardm(R^{n+1})=1$ and $cardm(R^n)=2^{m(n)}$, $m(n)\to\infty$, $n\in A$. We also construct another weakly mixing automorphism $R$ with the following properties: $mm(R^{n}) =n$ for $n=1,2,3,..., 2009, 2010$ but $mm(T…
The concept of a uniform set is introduced for an ergodic, measure-preserving transformation on a non-atomic, infinite Lebesgue space. The uniform sets exist as much as they generate the underlying $σ$-algebra. This leads to the result that any ergodic, measure-preserving transformation on a non-atomic, infinite Lebesgue space is isomorphic to a minimal homeomorphism on a locally compact metric space which admits a unique, up to scaling, invariant Radon measure.
We introduce concepts of Radon MSJ and Radon disjointness for infinite Radon measure preserving homeomorphisms of the locally compact Cantor space. We construct an uncountable family of pairwise Radon disjoint infinite Chacon like transformations. Every such transformation is Radon strictly ergodic, totally ergodic, asymmetric (not isomorphic to its inverse), has Radon MSJ and possesses Radon joinings whose ergodic components are not joinings.
The purpose of this paper is to establish mixing rates for infinite measure preserving almost Anosov diffeomorphisms on the two-dimensional torus. The main task is to establish regular variation of the tails of the first return time to the complement of a neighbourhood of the neutral fixed point.
We discuss multiple versions of rational ergodicity and rational weak mixing for "nice" transformations, including Markov shifts, certain interval maps and hyperbolic geodesic flows. These properties entail multiple recurrence.
This paper is a study of Glasner's definition of quasi-factors in the setting of infinite-measure preserving system. The existence of a system with zero Krengel entropy and a quasi-factor with positive entropy is obtained. On the other hand, relative zero-entropy for conservative systems implies relative zero-entropy of any quasi-factor with respect to its natural projection onto the factor. This extends (and is based upon) results of Glasner, Thouvenot and Weiss. Following and extending Glasner and Weiss, we also prove that any conservative measure preserving system with positive entropy in t…
We solve the question of the existence of a Poisson-Pinsker factor for conservative ergodic infinite measure preserving action of a countable amenable group by proving the following dichotomy: either it has totally positive Poisson entropy (and is of zero type), or it possesses a Poisson-Pinsker factor. If G is abelian and the entropy positive, the spectrum is absolutely continuous (Lebesgue countable if G=\mathbb{Z}) on the whole L^{2}-space in the first case and in the orthocomplement of the L^{2}-space of the Poisson-Pinsker factor in the second.
Given $k>0$ and an Abelian countable discrete group $G$ with elements of infinite order, we construct $(i)$ rigid funny rank-one infinite measure preserving (i.m.p.) $G$-actions of ergodic index $k$, $(ii)$ 0-type funny rank-one i.m.p. $G$-actions of ergodic index $k$, $(iii)$ funny rank-one i.m.p. $G$-actions $T$ of ergodic index 2 such that the product $T\times T^{-1}$ is not ergodic. It is shown that $T\times T^{-1}$ is conservative for each funny rank-one $G$-action $T$.
We define directional recurrence for infinite measure preserving Z^d actions both intrinsically and via the unit suspension flow and prove that the two definitions are equivalent. We study the structure of the set of recurrent directions and show it is always a G_delta set. We construct an example of a recurrent action with no recurrent directions, answering a question posed in a 2007 paper of Daniel J. Rudolph. We also show by example that it is possible for a recurrent action to not be recurrent in an irrational direction even if all its sub-actions are recurrent.
We consider conservative ergodic measure preserving transformations on infinite measure spaces and investigate the asymptotic behaviour of distorted return time processes with respect to sets satisfying a type of Darling-Kac condition. We identify two critical cases for which we prove uniform distribution laws. For this we introduce the notion of uniformly returning sets and discuss some of their properties.
The escaping set I(f) of a transcendental meromorphic function f consists of all points which tend to infinity under iteration. The Eremenko-Lyubich class B consists of all transcendental meromorphic functions for which the set of finite critical and asymptotic values of f is bounded. It is shown that if f is in B and of finite order of growth, if infinity is not an asymptotic value of f and if the multiplicities of the poles of f are uniformly bounded, then the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) is strictly smaller than 2. In fact, we give a sharp bound for the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) in terms o…
We investigate ergodic theory of Poisson suspensions. In the process, we establish close connections between finite and infinite measure preserving ergodic theory. Poisson suspensions thus provide a new approach to infinite measure preserving ergodic theory. Fields investigated here are mixing properties, spectral theory, joinings. We also compare Poisson suspensions to the apparently similar looking Gaussian dynamical systems.
In this paper, we consider chaotic dynamics and variational structures of area-preserving maps. There is a lot of study on dynamics of their maps and the works of Poincare and Birkhoff are well-known. To consider variational structures of area-preserving maps, we define a special class of area-preserving maps called monotone twist maps. Variational structures determined from twist maps can be used for constructing characteristic trajectories of twist maps. Our goal is to define the variational structure such as giving infinite transition orbits through minimizing methods.
It is shown that a locally compact second countable group $G$ has the Haagerup property if and only if there exists a sharply weak mixing 0-type measure preserving free $G$-action $T=(T_g)_{g\in G}$ on an infinite $σ$-finite standard measure space $(X,μ)$ admitting an exhausting $T$-Følner sequence (i.e. a sequence $(A_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ of measured subsets of finite measure such that $A_1\subset A_2\subset\cdots$, $\bigcup_{n=1}^\infty A_n=X$ and $\lim_{n\to\infty}\sup_{g\in K}\frac{μ(T_gA_n\triangle A_n)}{μ(A_n)}= 0$ for each compact $K\subset G$). It is also shown that a pair of groups $H\sub…
We investigate the scaling of the escape rate from piecewise-linear dynamical systems displaying intermittency due to the presence of an indifferent fixed-point. Strong intermittent behaviour in the dynamics can result in the system preserving an infinite measure. We define a neighbourhood of the indifferent fixed point to be a hole through which points escape and investigate the scaling of the rate of this escape as the length of the hole decreases, both in the finite measure preserving case and infinite measure preserving case. In the infinite measure preserving systems we observe logarithmi…
In the scope of the statistical description of dynamical systems, one of the defining features of chaos is the tendency of a system to lose memory of its initial conditions (more precisely, of the distribution of its initial conditions). For a dynamical system preserving a probability measure, this property is named `mixing' and is equivalent to the decay of correlations for observables in phase space. For the class of dynamical systems preserving infinite measures, this probabilistic connection is lost and no completely satisfactory definition has yet been found which expresses the idea of lo…
Let $Γ$ be a lattice in a simply connected nilpotent Lie group $G$. Given an infinite measure preserving action $T$ of $Γ$ and a "direction" in $G$ (i.e. an element $θ$ of the projective space $P(\goth g)$ of the Lie algebra $\goth g$ of $G$), some notions of recurrence and rigidity for $T$ along $θ$ are introduced. It is shown that the set of recurrent directions $\Cal R(T)$ and the set of rigid directions for $T$ are both $G_δ$. In the case where $G=\Bbb R^d$ and $Γ=\Bbb Z^d$, we prove that (a) for each $G_δ$-subset $Δ$ of $P(\goth g)$ and a countable subset $D\subsetΔ$, there is a rank-one …
We study the rich behavior of ergodicity and conservativity of Cartesian products of infinite measure preserving transformations. A class of transformations is constructed such that for any subset $R\subset \mathbb Q\cap (0,1)$ there exists $T$ in this class such that $T^p\times T^q$ is ergodic if and only if $\frac{p}{q} \in R$. This contrasts with the finite measure preserving case where $T^p\times T^q$ is ergodic for all nonzero $p$ and $q$ if and only if $T\times T$ is ergodic. We also show that our class is rich in the behavior of conservative products. For each positive integer $k$, a fa…
We consider transcendental meromorphic function for which the set of finite singularities of its inverse is bounded. Bergweiler and Kotus gave bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of escaping sets if the function has no logarithmic singularities over infinity, the multiplicities of poles are bounded and the order is finite. We study the case of infinite order and find gauge functions for which the Hausdorff measure of escaping sets is zero or infinity.
We study convergence of return- and hitting-time distributions of small sets $E_{k}$ with $μ(E_{k})\rightarrow0$ in recurrent ergodic dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure $μ$. Some properties which are easy in finite measure situations break down in this null-recurrent setup. However, in the presence of a uniform set $Y$ with wandering rate regularly varying of index $1-α$ with $α\in(0,1]$, there is a scaling function suitable for all subsets of $Y$. In this case, we show that return distributions for the $E_{k}$ converge iff the corresponding hitting time distributions do, and we …
We construct a class of rank-one infinite measure-preserving transformations such that for each transformation $T$ in the class, the cartesian product $T\times T$ of the transformation with itself is ergodic, but the product $T\times T^{-1}$ of the transformation with its inverse is not ergodic. We also prove that the product of any rank-one transformation with its inverse is conservative, while there are infinite measure-preserving conservative ergodic Markov shifts whose product with their inverse is not conservative.
We show that a certain type of quasi finite, conservative, ergodic, measure preserving transformation always has a maximal zero entropy factor, generated by predictable sets. We also construct a conservative, ergodic, measure preserving transformation which is not quasi finite; and consider distribution asymptotics of information showing that e.g. for Boole's transformation, information is asymptotically mod-normal with square root normalization. Lastly we see that certain ergodic, probability preserving transformations with zero entropy have analogous properties and consequently entropy dimen…
A rank-one infinite measure preserving flow $T=(T_t)_{t\in\Bbb R}$ is constructed such that for each $t\ne 0$, the Cartesian powers of the transformation $T_t$ are all ergodic.
We consider volume-preserving flows $(Φ^f_t)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ on $S\times \mathbb{R}$, where $S$ is a closed connected surface of genus $g\geq 2$ and $(Φ^f_t)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ has the form $Φ^f_t(x,y)=(ϕ_tx,y+\int_0^t f(ϕ_sx)ds)$, where $(ϕ_t)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ is a locally Hamiltonian flow of hyperbolic periodic type on $S$ and $f$ is a smooth real valued function on $S$. We investigate ergodic properties of these infinite measure-preserving flows and prove that if $f$ belongs to a space of finite codimension in $\mathscr{C}^{2+ε}(S)$, then the following dynamical dichotomy holds: if there …
For a class of irrational numbers, depending on their Diophantine properties, we construct explicit rank-one transformations that are totally ergodic and not weakly mixing. We classify when the measure is finite or infinite. In the finite case they are isomorphic to irrational rotations. We also obtain rank-one nonrigid infinite invariant measures for irrational rotations, and, for each Krieger type, nonsingular measures on irrational rotations. In the third version, in the infinite case we use the constructions to provide examples of non-weakly mixing infinite measure-preserving ergodic trans…
We construct a rank one infinite measure preserving transformation $T$ such that for all sequences of nonzero integers $\{k_{1},..., k_{r}\}$, $T^{k_{1}}\times...\times T^{k_{r}}$ is ergodic.
We describe all boundedly finite measures which are invariant by Cartesian powers of an infinite measure preserving version of Chacon transformation. All such ergodic measures are products of so-called diagonal measures, which are measures generalizing in some way the measures supported on a graph. Unlike what happens in the finite-measure case, this class of diagonal measures is not reduced to measures supported on a graph arising from powers of the transformation: it also contains some weird invariant measures, whose marginals are singular with respect to the measure invariant by the transfo…
We consider a conservative ergodic measure-preserving transformation $T$ of a $σ$-finite measure space $(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$ with $μ(X)=\infty$. Given an observable $f:X\to \mathbb{R}$ we study the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of the Birkhoff sums $S_Nf(x) := \sum_{j=1}^N\, (f\circ T^{j-1})(x)$. In infinite ergodic theory it is well known that the asymptotic behaviour of $S_Nf(x)$ strongly depends on the point $x\in X$, and if $f\in L^1(X,μ)$, then there exists no real valued sequence $(b(N))$ such that $\lim_{N\to\infty} S_Nf(x)/b(N)=1$ almost surely. In this paper we show that for dynamica…
Area-preserving maps have been observed to undergo a universal period-doubling cascade, analogous to the famous Feigenbaum-Coullet-Tresser period doubling cascade in one-dimensional dynamics. A renormalization approach has been used by Eckmann, Koch and Wittwer in a computer-assisted proof of existence of a conservative renormalization fixed point. Furthermore, it has been shown by Gaidashev, Johnson and Martens that infinitely renormalizable maps in a neighborhood of this fixed point admit invariant Cantor sets with vanishing Lyapunov exponents on which dynamics for any two maps is smoothly c…
We present abstract conditions under which a special flow over a probability preserving map with a non-integrable roof function is Krickeberg mixing. Our main condition is some version of the local central limit theorem for the underlying map. We check our assumptions for iid random variables (renewal theorem with infinite mean) and for suspensions over Pomeau-Manneville maps.
We show that if an infinite measure preserving system is well approximated on most of the phase space by a system satisfying the local limit theorem, then the original system enjoys mixing with respect to global observables, that is, the observables which admit an infinite volume average. The systems satisfying our conditions include the Lorentz gas with Coulomb potential, the Galton board and piecewise smooth Fermi-Ulam pingpongs.
For each vector $v$ we define the notion of a $v$-positive type for infinite measure-preserving transformations, a refinement of positive type as introduced by Hajian and Kakutani. We prove that a positive type transformation need not be $(1,2)$-positive type. We study this notion in the context of Markov shifts and multiple recurrence and give several examples.
We define a model for rank one measure preserving transformations in the sense of [2]. This is done by defining a new Polish topology on the space of codes, which are infinite rank one words, for symbolic rank one systems. We establish that this space of codes has the same generic dynamical properties as the space of (rank one) measure preserving transformations on the unit interval.
It is well-known that a strict analogue of the Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem in infinite ergodic theory is trivial; it states that for any infinite-measure-preserving ergodic system the Birkhoff average of every integrable function is almost everywhere zero. Nor does a different rescaling of the Birkhoff sum that leads to a non-degenerate pointwise limit exist. In this paper we give a version of Birkhoff's theorem for conservative, ergodic, infinite-measure-preserving dynamical systems where instead of integrable functions we use certain elements of $L^\infty$, which we generically call global obse…
We prove that the notions of Krengel entropy and Poisson entropy for infinite-measure-preserving transformations do not always coincide: We construct a conservative infinite-measure-preserving transformation with zero Krengel entropy (the induced transformation on a set of measure 1 is the Von Neumann-Kakutani odometer), but whose associated Poisson suspension has positive entropy.
Let F be a continuous injective map from an open subset of R^n to R^n. Assume that, for infinitely many k>1, F induces a bijection between the rational points of denominator k in the domain and those in the image (the denominator of (a_1/b_1,...,a_n/b_n) being the l.c.m. of b_1,...,b_n). Then F preserves the Lebesgue measure.
If we take a superintegrable Stackel system and make variables "faster" or "slower", that is equivalent to a trivial transformation of the Stackel matrix and potentials, then we obtain an infinite family of superintegrable systems with explicitly defined additional integrals of motion. We present some examples of such transformations associated with angle variables expressed via logarithmic functions.
