The escaping set I(f) of a transcendental meromorphic function f consists of all points which tend to infinity under iteration. The Eremenko-Lyubich class B consists of all transcendental meromorphic functions for which the set of finite critical and asymptotic values of f is bounded. It is shown that if f is in B and of finite order of growth, if infinity is not an asymptotic value of f and if the multiplicities of the poles of f are uniformly bounded, then the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) is strictly smaller than 2. In fact, we give a sharp bound for the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) in terms of the order of f and the bound for the multiplicities of the poles.
If f satisfies the above hypotheses but is of infinite order, then the area of I(f) is zero. This result does not hold without a restriction on the multiplicities of the poles.
We give a complete description of the possible Hausdorff dimensions of escaping sets for meromorphic functions with a finite number of singular values. More precisely, for any given $d\in [0,2]$ we show that there exists such a meromorphic function for which the Hausdorff dimension of the escaping set is equal to $d$. The main ingredient is to glue together suitable meromorphic functions by using quasiconformal mappings. Moreover, we show that there are uncountably many quasiconformally equivalent meromorphic functions for which the escaping sets have different Hausdorff dimensions.
In this paper, we prove that the ratio of the modulus of the iterates of two points in an escaping Fatou component may be bounded even if the orbit of the component contains an infinite modulus annulus sequence and this case cannot happen when the maximal modulus of the meromorphic function is large enough. Therefore, we extend the related results for entire functions to ones for meromorphic functions with infinitely many poles. And we investigate the fast escaping Fatou components of meromorphic functions defined in [44] in terms of the Nevanlinna characteristic instead of the maximal modulus…
We show that for any transcendental meromorphic function $f$ there is a point $z$ in the Julia set of $f$ such that the iterates $f^n(z)$ escape, that is, tend to $\infty$, arbitrarily slowly. The proof uses new covering results for analytic functions. We also introduce several slow escaping sets, in each of which $f^n(z)$ tends to $\infty$ at a bounded rate, and establish the connections between these sets and the Julia set of $f$. To do this, we show that the iterates of $f$ satisfy a strong distortion estimate in all types of escaping Fatou components except one, which we call a plane-filli…
We consider the subclass of class ${\mathcal B} $ consisting of meromorphic functions $f:{\mathbb C}\to\hat{\mathbb C}$ for which infinity is not an asymptotic value and whose all poles have orders uniformly bounded from above. This class was introduced in \cite{BwKo2012} and the Hausdorff dimension ${\rm HD}({{\mathcal I} (f)})$ of the set ${{\mathcal I} (f)}$ of all points escaping to infinity under forward iteration of $f$ was estimated therein. In this paper we provide a closed formula for the exact value of ${\rm HD}({{\mathcal I} (f)})$ identifying it with the critical exponent of the na…
In this paper, we give a definition of Eremenko's point of a meromorphic function with infinitely many poles and a condition for its existence in narrow annuli in terms of a covering theorem of annulus.
We consider transcendental meromorphic function for which the set of finite singularities of its inverse is bounded. Bergweiler and Kotus gave bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of escaping sets if the function has no logarithmic singularities over infinity, the multiplicities of poles are bounded and the order is finite. We study the case of infinite order and find gauge functions for which the Hausdorff measure of escaping sets is zero or infinity.
Let $f$ and $g$ be commuting meromorphic functions with finitely many poles. By studying the behaviour of Fatou components under this commuting relation, we prove that $f$ and $g$ have the same Julia set whenever $f$ and $g$ have no simply connected fast-escaping wandering domains. By combining this with a recent result of Tsantaris', we obtain the strongest statement (to date) regarding the Julia sets of commuting meromorphic functions. In order to highlight the difference to the entire case, we show that transcendental meromorphic functions with finitely many poles have orbits that alternate…
We show that for each $d\in (0,2]$ there exists a meromorphic function $f$ such that the inverse function of $f$ has three singularities and the Julia set of $f$ has Hausdorff dimension $d$.
Let $f$ and $g$ be transcendental entire functions, each with a bounded set of singular values, and suppose that $f$ and $g$ are affinely equivalent (that is, $g \circ ϕ= ψ\circ f$, where $ϕ,ψ:\C\to\C$ are affine). We show that the escaping sets of $f$ and $g$ have the same Hausdorff dimension. Using a result of the second author, we deduce that there exists a family of transcendental entire functions for which the escaping set has Hausdorff dimension equal to one.
We study a family of transcendental entire functions of genus zero, for which all of the zeros lie within a closed sector strictly smaller than a half-plane. In general these functions lie outside the Eremenko-Lyubich class. We show that for functions in this family the fast escaping set has Hausdorff dimension equal to two.
We show that if a meromorphic function has a direct singularity over infinity, then the escaping set has an unbounded component and the intersection of the escaping set with the Julia set contains continua. This intersection has an unbounded component if and only if the function has no Baker wandering domains. We also give estimates of the Hausdorff dimension and the upper box dimension of the Julia set of a meromorphic function with a logarithmic singularity over infinity. The above theorems are deduced from more general results concerning functions which have "direct or logarithmic tracts", …
We determine the exact values of Hausdorff dimensions of escaping sets of meromorphic functions with polynomial Schwarzian derivatives. This will follow from the relation between these functions and the second order differential equations in the complex plane.
We consider the escaping parameters in the family $β\wp_Λ$, i.e. these parameters for which the orbits of critical values of $β\wp_Λ$ approach infinity, where $\wp_Λ$ is the Weierstrass function. Unlike to the exponential map the considered functions are ergodic. They admit a non-atomic, $σ$-finite, ergodic, conservative and invariant measure $μ$ absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Under additional assumptions on the $\wp_Λ$-function we estimate from below the Hausdorff dimension of the set of escaping parameters in the family $β\wp_Λ$, and compare it with the Hausdorff…
The escaping set of an entire function is the set of points that tend to infinity under iteration. We consider subsets of the escaping set defined in terms of escape rates and obtain upper and lower bounds for the Hausdorff measure of these sets with respect to certain gauge functions.
We show that for any quasimeromorphic mapping with an essential singularity at infinity, there exist points whose iterates tend to infinity arbitrarily slowly. This extends a result by Nicks for quasiregular mappings, and Rippon and Stallard for transcendental meromorphic functions on the complex plane. We further establish a new result for the growth rate of quasiregular mappings near an essential singularity, and briefly extend some results regarding the bounded orbit set and the bungee set to the quasimeromorphic setting.
We show that the escaping sets and the Julia sets of bounded type transcendental entire functions of order $ρ$ become 'smaller' as $ρ\to\infty$. More precisely, their Hausdorff measures are infinite with respect to the gauge function $h_γ(t)=t^2g(1/t)^γ$, where $g$ is the inverse of a linearizer of some exponential map and $γ\geq(\logρ(f)+K_1)/c$, but for $ρ$ large enough, there exists a function $f_ρ$ of bounded type with order $ρ$ such that the Hausdorff measures of the escaping set and the Julia set of $f_ρ$ with respect to $h_{γ'}$ are zero whenever $γ'\leq(\logρ-K_2)/c$.
The main result of this paper is to show that if $\H$ is a normal subgroup of a Kleinian group $G$ such that $G/\H$ contains a coset which is represented by some loxodromic element, then the Hausdorff dimension of the transient limit set of $\H$ coincides with the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of $G$. This observation extends previous results by Fernández and Melián for Riemann surfaces.
We consider a class of functions, denoted by K in this paper, which are meromorphic outside a compact and countable set B(f), investigated by A. Bolsch in his thesis in 1997. The set B(f) is the closure of isolated essential singularities. We review main definitions and properties of the Fatou and Julia sets of functions in class K. It is studied the role of B(f) in this context. Following Eremenko it is defined escaping sets and we prove some results related to them. For instance, the dynamics of a function is extended to its singularities using escaping hairs. We give an example of an escapi…
We show that if the growth of a transcendental entire function f is sufficiently regular, then the Julia set and the escaping set of f have Hausdorff dimension 2.
We study the iteration of functions in the exponential family. We construct a number of sets, consisting of points which escape to infinity `slowly', and which have Hausdorff dimension equal to 1. We prove these results by using the idea of an annular itinerary. In the case of a general transcendental entire function we show that one of these sets, the uniformly slowly escaping set, has strong dynamical properties and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for this set to be non-empty.
We give a lower bound of the hyperbolic and the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of meromorphic functions of finite order under very general conditions.
This paper consists of tow parts. One is to study the existence of a point $a$ in the intersection of Julia set and escaping set such that $\arg z=θ$ is a singular direction if $θ$ is a limit point of $\{\arg f^n(a)\}$ under some growth condition of a meromorphic function. The other is to study the connection between the Fatou set and singular direction. We prove that the absent of singular direction deduces the non-existence of annuli in the Fatou set.
Let f be a transcendental entire function in the Eremenko-Lyubich class B. We give a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of f that depends on the growth of f. This estimate is best possible and is obtained by proving a more general result concerning the size of the escaping set of a function with a logarithmic tract.
We study the dynamics of iterated cosine maps $E\colon z \mapsto ae^z+be^{-z},$ with $a,b \in \C\setminus \{0\}$. We show that the points which converge to infinity under iteration are organized in the form of rays and, as in the exponential family, every escaping point is either on one of these rays or the landing point of a unique ray. Thus we get a complete classification of the escaping points of the cosine family, confirming a conjecture of Eremenko in this case. We also get a particularly strong version of the ``dimension paradox'': the set of rays has Hausdorff dimension 1, while the se…
We consider the Hausdorff measure of Julia sets and escaping sets of exponential maps with respect to certain gauge functions. We give conditions on the growth of the gauge function which imply that the measure is zero or infinity, respectively.
We prove that for meromorphic maps with logarithmic tracts (e.g. entire or meromorphic maps with a finite number of poles from class $\mathcal B$), the Julia set contains a compact invariant hyperbolic Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension greater than 1. Hence, the hyperbolic dimension of the Julia set is greater than 1.
In this paper we study two classes of meromorphic functions previously studied by Mayer, Kotus, and Urbański. In particular we estimate a lower bound for the Julia set and the set of escaping points for non-autonomous additive and affine perturbations of functions from these classes. For particular classes we are able to calculate these dimensions exactly. In these cases, we are able to reinterpret our results to show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points in the Julia set which escape to infinity is stable under sufficiently small additive perturbations. We accomplish this by const…
Let $f$ be an arbitrary transcendental entire or meromorphic function in the class $\mathcal S$ (i.e. with finitely many singularities). We show that the topological pressure $P(f,t)$ for $t > 0$ can be defined as the common value of the pressures $P(f,t, z)$ for all $z \in \mathbb C$ up to a set of Hausdorff dimension zero. Moreover, we prove that $P(f,t)$ equals the supremum of the pressures of $f|_X$ over all invariant hyperbolic subsets $X$ of the Julia set, and we prove Bowen's formula for $f$, i.e. we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the radial Julia set of $f$ is equal to the infimu…
In this paper we study the relation between the existence of a conformal measure on the Julia set $J(f)$ of a transcendental meromorphic map $f$ and the existence of zero of the topological pressure function $t \mapsto P(f, t)$ for the map $f$. In particular, we show that if $f$ is hyperbolic and there exists a $t$-conformal measure which is not totally supported on the set of escaping points, then $P(f, t) = 0$. On the other hand, for a wide class of maps $f$, including arbitrary maps with at most finitely many poles and finite set of singular values and hyperbolic maps with at most finitely …
We survey the definition of the radial Julia set of a meromorphic function (in fact, more generally, any "Ahlfors islands map"), and give a simple proof that the Hausdorff dimension of the reduced Julia set always coincides with the hyperbolic dimension.
Working with well chosen Riemannian metrics and employing Nevanlinna's theory, we make the thermodynamical formalism work for a wide class of hyperbolic meromorphic functions of finite order (including in particular exponential family, elliptic functions, cosine, tangent and the cosine--root family and also compositions of these functions with arbitrary polynomials). In particular, the existence of conformal (Gibbs) measures is established and then the existence of probability invariant measures equivalent to conformal measures is proven. As a geometric consequence of the developed thermodynam…
We show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points of bounded orbit in the Julia set of a meromorphic map with a simply connected direct tract and a certain restriction on the singular values is strictly greater than one. This result is obtained by proving new results related to Wiman-Valiron theory.
We study non-autonomous conformal iterated function systems, with finite or countably infinite alphabet alike. These differ from the usual (autonomous) iterated function systems in that the contractions applied at each step in time are allowed to vary. (In the case where all maps are affine similarities, the resulting system is also called a "Moran set construction".) We shall show that, given a suitable restriction on the growth of the number of contractions used at each step, the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of such a system is determined by an equation known as Bowen's formula. We a…
Analyticity results of expected pressure and invariant densities in the context of random dynamics of transcendental functions are established. These are obtained by a refinement of work by Rugh leading to a simple approach to analyticity. We work under very mild dynamical assumptions. Just the iterates of the Perron-Frobenius operator are assumed to converge. We also provide a Bowen's formula expressing the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of the radial fiberwise Julia sets in terms of the zero of an expected pressure function. Our main application states real analyticity for the variation of …
We prove that if $J$ is the limit set of an irreducible conformal iterated function system (with either finite or countably infinite alphabet), then the badly approximable vectors form a set of full Hausdorff dimension in $J$. The same is true if $J$ is the radial Julia set of an irreducible meromorphic function (either rational or transcendental). The method of proof is to find subsets of $J$ that support absolutely friendly and Ahlfors regular measures of large dimension. In the appendix to this paper, we answer a question of Broderick, Kleinbock, Reich, Weiss, and the second-named author ('…
Singular systems of linear forms were introduced by Khintchine in the 1920s, and it was shown by Dani in the 1980s that they are in one-to-one correspondence with certain divergent orbits of one- parameter diagonal groups on the space of lattices. We give a (conjecturally sharp) upper bound on the Hausdorff dimension of singular systems of linear forms (equivalently the set of points with divergent trajectories) as well as the dimension of the set of points with trajectories 'escaping on average' (a notion weaker than divergence). This extends work by Cheung, as well as by Chevallier and Cheun…
The ergodic theory and geometry of the Julia set of meromorphic functions on the complex plane with polynomial Schwarzian derivative is investigated under the condition that the forward trajectory of asymptotic values in the Julia set is bounded and the map $f$ restricted to its closure is expanding, the property refered to as sub-expanding. We first show the existence, uniqueness, conservativity and ergodicity of a conformal measure $m$ with minimal exponent $h$; furthermore, we show weak metrical exactness of this measure. Then we prove the existence of a $\sg$--finite invariant measure $μ$ …
