We show that a certain type of quasi finite, conservative, ergodic, measure preserving transformation always has a maximal zero entropy factor, generated by predictable sets. We also construct a conservative, ergodic, measure preserving transformation which is not quasi finite; and consider distribution asymptotics of information showing that e.g. for Boole's transformation, information is asymptotically mod-normal with square root normalization. Lastly we see that certain ergodic, probability preserving transformations with zero entropy have analogous properties and consequently entropy dimension of at most 1/2.
We prove that a topologically predictable action of a countable amenable group has zero topological entropy, as conjectured by Hochman. On route, we investigate invariant random orders and formulate a unified Kieffer-Pinsker formula for the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of measure preserving actions of amenable groups. We also present a proof due to Weiss for the fact that topologically prime actions of sofic groups have non-positive topological sofic entropy.
A consequence of Ornstein theory is that the infinite entropy flows associated with Poisson processes and continuous-time irreducible Markov chains on a finite number of states are isomorphic as measure-preserving systems. We give an elementary construction of such an isomorphism that has an additional finitariness property, subject to the additional conditions that the Markov chain has a uniform holding rate and a mixing skeleton.
The Poisson entropy of an infinite-measure-preserving transformation is defined as the Kolmogorov entropy of its Poisson suspension. In this article, we relate Poisson entropy with other definitions of entropy for infinite transformations: For quasi-finite transformations we prove that Poisson entropy coincides with Krengel's and Parry's entropy. In particular, this implies that for null-recurrent Markov chains, the usual formula for the entropy $-\sum q_i p_{i,j}\log p_{i,j}$ holds in any of the definitions for entropy. Poisson entropy dominates Parry's entropy in any conservative transformat…
This paper is a sequel to Chaika and Krishnan [arXiv:1612.00434]. We again consider translation invariant measures on families of nearest-neighbor semi-infinite walks on the integer lattice Z^d. We assume that once walks meet, they coalesce. We consider various entropic properties of these systems. We show that in systems with completely positive entropy, bi-infinite trajectories must carry entropy. In the case of directed walks in dimension 2 we show that positive entropy guarantees that all trajectories cannot be bi-infinite. To show that our theorems are proper, we construct a stationary di…
We prove that if a free ergodic action of a countably infinite group has positive Rokhlin entropy (or, less generally, positive sofic entropy) then it factors onto all Bernoulli shifts of lesser or equal entropy. This extends to all countably infinite groups the well-known Sinai factor theorem from classical entropy theory.
We prove that the notions of Krengel entropy and Poisson entropy for infinite-measure-preserving transformations do not always coincide: We construct a conservative infinite-measure-preserving transformation with zero Krengel entropy (the induced transformation on a set of measure 1 is the Von Neumann-Kakutani odometer), but whose associated Poisson suspension has positive entropy.
We give examples of endomorphisms in dimension one with infinite topological entropy which are $α$-Hölder and $(1,p)$-Sobolev for all $0\leqα<1$ and $1\leq p<\infty$. This is constructed within a family of endomorphisms with infinite topological entropy and which traverse all $α$-Hölder and $(1,p)$-Sobolev classes. Finally, we also give examples of endomorphisms, also in dimension one, which lie in the big and little Zygmund classes, answering a question of M. Benedicks.
In \cite{Ch91a} it was shown that the billiard ball map for the periodic Lorentz gas has infinite topological entropy. In this article we study the set of points with infinite Lyapunov exponents. Using the cell structure developed in \cite{BSC90,Ku} we construct an ergodic invariant probability measure with infinite topological entropy supported on this set. Since the topological entropy is infinite this is a measure of maximal entropy. From the construction it is clear that there many such measures can coexist on a single component of topological transitivity. We also construct an ergodic inv…
For bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms of a compact manifold it is known that topological entropy is always finite. For compact manifolds of dimension two or greater, we show that in the closure of the space of bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms, with respect to either the Hölder or the Sobolev topologies, topological entropy is generically infinite. We also prove versions of the $C^1$-Closing Lemma in either of these spaces. Finally, we give examples of homeomorphisms with infinite topological entropy which are Hölder and/or Sobolev of every exponent.
We define "slow" entropy invariants for Z^2 actions on infinite measure spaces, which measures growth of itineraries at subexponential scales. We use this to construct infinite-measure preserving Z^2 actions which cannot be realized as a group of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold preserving a Borel measure, contrary to the situation for Z-actions, where every infinite-measure preserving action can be realized in this way.
We examine the chaotic behavior of certain continuous linear operators on infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, and provide several equivalent characterizations of when these operators have infinite topological entropy. For example, it is shown that infinite topological entropy is equivalent to non-zero topological entropy for translation operators on weighted Lebesgue function spaces. In particular, finite non-zero entropy is impossible for this class of operators, which answers a question raised by Yin and Wei.
In this paper, we study the complicated dynamics of infinite dimensional random dynamical systems which include deterministic dynamical systems as their special cases in a Polish space. Without assuming any hyperbolicity, we proved if a continuous random map has a positive topological entropy, then it contains a topological horseshoe. We also show that the positive topological entropy implies the chaos in the sense of Li-Yorke. The complicated behavior exhibiting here is induced by the positive entropy but not the randomness of the system.
The complexity function of an infinite word $w$ on a finite alphabet $A$ is the sequence counting, for each non-negative $n$, the number of words of length $n$ on the alphabet $A$ that are factors of the infinite word $w$. For any given function $f$ with exponential growth, we introduced in [MM17] the notion of {\it word entropy} $E_W(f)$ associated to $f$ and we described the combinatorial structure of sets of infinite words with a complexity function bounded by $f$. The goal of this work is to give estimates on the word entropy $E_W(f)$ in terms of the limiting lower exponential growth rate …
We show that, for countable sofic groups, a Bernoulli action with infinite entropy base has infinite entropy with respect to every sofic approximation sequence. This builds on the work of Lewis Bowen in the case of finite entropy base and completes the computation of measure entropy for Bernoulli actions over countable sofic groups. One consequence is that such a Bernoulli action fails to have a generating countable partition with finite entropy if the base has infinite entropy, which in the amenable case is well known and in the case that the acting group contains the free group on two genera…
We study the Hausdorff dimension of Gibbs measures with infinite entropy with respect to maps of the interval with countably many branches. We show that under simple conditions, such measures are symbolic-exact dimensional, and provide an almost sure value for the symbolic dimension. We also show that the lower local dimension dimension is almost surely equal to zero, while the upper local dimension is almost surely equal to the symbolic dimension. In particular, we prove that a large class of Gibbs measures with infinite entropy for the Gauss map have Hausdorff dimension zero and packing dime…
The complexity function of an infinite word $w$ on a finite alphabet $A$ is the sequence counting, for each non-negative $n$, the number of words of length $n$ on the alphabet $A$ that are factors of the infinite word $w$. The goal of this work is to estimate the number of words of length $n$ on the alphabet $A$ that are factors of an infinite word $w$ with a complexity function bounded by a given function $f$ with exponential growth and to describe the combinatorial structure of such sets of infinite words. We introduce a real parameter, the {\it word entropy} $E_W(f)$ associated to a given f…
We prove that entire transcendental holomorphic functions with an omitted value have infinite entropy. A proof for general transcendental entire functions will be given in an upcoming paper.
In this paper, we introduce topological entropy for dynamical systems generated by a single local homeomorphism (Deaconu-Renault systems). More precisely, we generalize Adler, Konheim, and McAndrew's definition of entropy via covers and Bowen's definition of entropy via separated sets. We propose a definition of factor map between Deaconu-Renault systems and show that entropy (via separated sets) always decreases under uniformly continuous factor maps. Since the variational principle does not hold in the full generality of our setting, we show that the proposed entropy via covers is a lower bo…
Many years ago B.S. Pitskel observed that the metric entropy of the shift transformation in the sample space of a stationary random process $X=\{X_n,\,n\in \mathbb Z\}$ with a countable number of states is equal to the conditional entropy $H(X_0|X_{-1},X_{-2},\dots)$ if $X$ is a stationary Markov chain (in which case the above conditional entropy is $H(X_0|X_{-1}))$, whether the entropy $H(X_0)$ is finite or not, while in general the statement is not true. In this note we present a class of processes for which Pitskel's observation holds, despite the fact that no of these processes is a Markov…
This paper is a study of Glasner's definition of quasi-factors in the setting of infinite-measure preserving system. The existence of a system with zero Krengel entropy and a quasi-factor with positive entropy is obtained. On the other hand, relative zero-entropy for conservative systems implies relative zero-entropy of any quasi-factor with respect to its natural projection onto the factor. This extends (and is based upon) results of Glasner, Thouvenot and Weiss. Following and extending Glasner and Weiss, we also prove that any conservative measure preserving system with positive entropy in t…
Very little is currently known about the dynamics of non-polynomial entire maps in several complex variables. The family of transcendental Hénon maps offers the potential of combining ideas from transcendental dynamics in one variable, and the dynamics of polynomial Hénon maps in two. Here we show that these maps all have infinite topological and measure theoretic entropy. The proof also implies the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits of any order greater than two.
Let $G$ be an infinite countable discrete amenable group. For any $G$-action on a compact metric space $(X,ρ)$, it turns out that if the action has positive topological entropy, then for any sequence $\{s_i\}_{i=1}^{+\infty}$ with pairwise distinct elements in $G$ there exists a Cantor subset $K$ of $X$ which is Li-Yorke chaotic along this sequence, that is, for any two distinct points $x,y\in K$, one has \[\limsup_{i\to+\infty}ρ(s_i x,s_iy)>0,\ \text{and}\ \liminf_{i\to+\infty}ρ(s_ix,s_iy)=0.\]
We prove an estimation of the Kolmogorov $ε$-entropy in H of the unitary ball in the space V, where H is a Hilbert space and V is a Sobolev-like subspace of H. Then, by means of Zelik's result [5], an estimate of the fractal dimension of the attractors of some nonlinear parabolic equations is established.
Let $f:X\to X$ be a self homeomorphism of a continuum $X$, we show that the topological entropy of the induced system $(2^X,2^f)$ is infinite provided that $X\setminus Ω(f)$ is not empty. If furthermore $X$ is a regular curve then it is shown that $(2^X,2^f)$ has infinite topological entropy if and only if $X\setminus Ω(f)$ is not empty. Moreover we prove for the induced system $(C(X),C(f))$ the equivalence between the following properties: (i) zero topological entropy; (ii) there is no Li-Yorke pair and (iii) for any periodic subcontinnum $A$ of $X$ and any connected component $C$ of $X\setmi…
In this note we describe instances where values of the $K$-theoretical regulator map evaluated on topological cycles equal entropies of topological actions by a group $Γ$. These entropies can also be described by determinants on the von Neumann algebra of $Γ$. The relations were first observed for real regulators. The latter have $p$-adic analogues and both $p$-adic entropy and $p$-adic determinants were then defined so that similar relations hold as in the real case. We describe this $p$-adic theory in the second part of the paper. This note is almost entirely a survey of known results with t…
We extend the results of our 2020 paper in the Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Classe di Scienze. There, we associated to each of an infinite family of triangle Fuchsian groups a one-parameter family of continued fraction maps and showed that the matching (or, synchronization) intervals are of full measure. Here, we find planar extensions of each of the maps, and prove the continuity of the entropy function associated to each one-parameter family. We also introduce a notion of "first pointwise expansive power" of an eventually expansive interval map. We prove that for every map …
One of the crucial steps in scientific studies is to specify dependent relationships among factors in a system of interest. Given little knowledge of a system, can we characterize the underlying dependent relationships through observation of its temporal behaviors? In multivariate systems, there are potentially many possible dependent structures confusable with each other, and it may cause false detection of illusory dependency between unrelated factors. The present study proposes a new information-theoretic measure with consideration to such potential multivariate relationships. The proposed …
